Christmas at the Cottage
Stayed here while visiting our son at Keesler AFB. Great location! Comfortable beds! Nice back deck and yard for our little dog. Yes, the tub/shower is inconvenient but, for a short stay, don’t let that stop you from staying at this charming cottage.

Charming cottage
We loved this historic cottage, loaded with charm and located on beautiful 2nd Street. Furniture was cozy and perfect for the house. Screened-in front porch was a great place to sit and read. Back deck and yard were inviting. Easy walking distance to the beach, Mississippi Aquarium, and downtown shopping and dining. We’ll be back!

Fun and comfort on the beach
My husband and I stayed here and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. This property on 2nd Street, Gulfport, MS was beautiful, comfortable and clean. We had close, walking distance, access to the beach and many prime spots in Gulfport. We went deep sea fishing, and grilled our catch on the gorgeous, comfortable back porch...grill is with house. The front porch is tastefully decorated and we enjoyed evenings there. The house has cable TV, washer and dryer and everything you would have at home to cook or do whatever you needed. We will be back down next year and this is definitely where we'll be staying. Very, very comfortable house.

A Jewel song the Gulfport Coast
With the location renovations and decor it was easy to enjoy unplugging and to have family over that were also in town across from the Cottage at a Hotel. The screen in front porch and the newly built deck and backyard fencing made it so relaxing with our dogs and just short walk to the sand. We did give several items that need attention with those taken care of we would most likely be back again with family. We love the coast The Toneys

Pleasant place!
Great location close to beach and walkable restaurants. Also a convenient 1hr from New Orleans. Charming house with a nice porch and back deck with a small yard (we enjoyed playing games there!). Furnishings eclectic and some in need of replacement. Hot water was limited. Our family of 4 struggled with this and the claw-foot tubs, while beautiful, weren’t practical for us (especially no shower head in the master). Overall we had a nice time and the host/management were attentive and hospitable.

Construction at property during stay
The general condition of the home was okay, however, the owner was replacing the backyard deck and fencing and redoing the front yard landscaping. The front yard was done within the first week of our stay but the final spray finish on the backyard deck was not done until 2/25. The owner kept saying it was finished enough that we could use the deck. The work crew was there from M-F from 8:45 AM until 5:45 PM each day. They had lumber, tools, etc. all over the deck each day. We would not have felt comfortable sitting out there even when they finally put a patio table and chairs on the deck, because the work crew was always there. There never was a grill for our use. We were not informed about the construction until the day we were to arrive. The owner did give us a $100 Gift Certificate at a local restaurant for our trouble, which we appreciated, but I think some additional compensation should have be given. When we complained, the owner said we could have stayed at the Marriott across the street for $189 a night and we had a bargain renting a whole house for less money. I found that comment very inappropriate. The owner kept telling us the deck was usable long before it was. The workers were also redoing the deck of the home next door and the two homes shared the deck space with a fence between. The owner kept insisting that the crew was working on the neighbors deck and not ours. That was just not true. They continued working on both properties until Feb. 25th. We left on March 6th. , so they were at the home working for 3 weeks of our 4 week stay.

Gulfport -One block off the Gulf
Perfect location and residence for me and my wife. Nice restaurants within walking distance and minutes from downtown Gulfport. Back yard fenced in but not up to standards of the rest of the house. During our stay backyard was "reworked" with all trees uprooted and fence and deck removed. Major disruption for two days.....so we left early. Next couple staying there should have a great backyard to enjoy. Only disappointment was this being treated as merely an "inconvenience" per the owner. We did get a refund for the two days we left early.. Still recommend this house!

Charming Cottage
This place was perfect for our small family road trip. My sister and I rented this place while traveling with our children 9&11. It was the perfect size for us. Each bedroom has a private bath. The master bedroom has a queen sized bed and the 2nd bedroom has two singles. The location was also excellent. It was one block from the beach and restaurants. We were walking distance *albeit across a busy and fast highway* from chair and umbrella rentals. The house is located in a quiet neighborhood, if you don't mind the train, which we didn't. The front screened in porch was nice in the mornings for coffee and post beach drinks in the evening. We had everything we needed to cook a lot of our meals. We loved exploring the coastal communities throughout the area. The house was clean and the beds were very comfortable! The neighbor was very nice and helpful with recommendations as well. The showers were quirky as they were the older clawfoot tub attachments, but they worked fine. Make sure to bring trash bags though...we had to use take out bags for our trash...but that was oversight on our part as the check in instructions said to bring them. Overall, if I am ever in the Mississippi Coast again, I will be sure to check this out again!

Great place!
My family of 4 really enjoyed our stay. Proximity is close enough to walk to the beach, and that’s literally all we did. Drank coffee and hit the beach. The yard was decent enough in size to let our dogs out, and all the neighbors and people who passed by the front porch in the morning were very friendly! We hope to return soon!

House and location was great, check in was simple, and all needed items were there such as dishes, paper products, etc. House could’ve used a good cleaning prior to arrival and yard needed attention as grass was really high and overgrown.

Wonderfully Historic
Second Street Place is a beautiful Historic home and is wonderfully located just a block from the beach and minutes away from dining and shopping. It was very clean and the listing was accurate. The communication from the owner and property manager was prompt and professional. The only issue we had with this property (and is what kept it from getting all 5 stars) are the showers. While the claw-foot tub fit into the historic feel of the house, the practicality of it was disappointing. That being said, it is still a place you should stay if you want to come to Gulfport as the positives greatly outweigh the negative!

About the host

Hosted by Tanya Darrow

Host profile image
I grew up in this neighborhood running barefoot to the park every summer morning! I bought this house in 1992 and brought it back to life (see framed article in living room). My daughter and I lived here for 14 years. Hurricane Katrina washed her off of the piers underneath but I couldn't let her go and brought her back to life a 2nd time! I tore her down to the studs and started over. The floors are 100 years old and salvaged after Katrina. This house was one of the first ever built in Gulfport and was used as "company housing" for port workers. 2nd Street was lined with them and now only 2 remain. Little 1618 has survived many hurricanes, hosted many parties, seen babies born and has had a few sad farwells also. I hope you will make some memories of your own here!

Why they chose this property

She is not exactly perfect (next time you come, she might have fresh paint or a landscaped back yard or new porch furniture) but she's a work in progress! I think what separates this house from the rest is the great feeling of "home" that lives here!
