About this property

Casa Malinche, Playa Remanso - San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua - 3-bdr Beach House

Walk to the beach! Three standalone cabins interconnected with stairs are perched on a hill with amazing ocean views! A well-designed complex of comfortable rustic pine cabins in true Nicaraguan architectural style. Casa Malinche set in the quiet community of El Remanso, is a place to unplug - but we do have WiFi ;) It is our home away from home and we are delighted to share it with you when we are not there.
You got the entire house! Accommodation is for 6 people and the setup is perfect for couples and one or two families. The first level with the outdoor social areas with deck and hammock portico opens up into a “Great Room” - open concept kitchen, dining, living, overlooking the ocean. The kitchen is fully equipped - gas stove/oven, fridge, microwave, toaster, blender, espresso and regular coffee maker, pots and pans, utensils, dishes and cutlery. You get an outdoor charcoal (provided) grill ready for you. Although there is running water, we provide a 5-gallon bottled water for cooking and drinking. You only need to bring your consumables.
Two additional bedroom levels invite you to the quieter, private areas. Stairs take you to the second level common balcony accessing two bedrooms and a shared bathroom. Bedrooms 2 and 3 have 2 twin beds each that can be joined together (if desired). All windows are screened allowing you to sleep listening to the surf. The 3rd level takes you to the master bedroom (King-size bed) with en-suite bathroom and a balcony overlooking the ocean. There is also private porch with sitting area, swings and a walk through to a private outdoor shower for a refreshing rinse after the beach.
All bedrooms are well appointed with comfortable beds, linens, pillows, towels and beach towels. Bathrooms include hair dryer, hand wash soap and 1L water bottle. Plenty of screened windows provide natural cross ventilation with ceiling fans in every room. Balconies and terraces come furnished with a combination of hammocks, swings, lounging chairs, tall tables/chairs to watch the view. Our live-in caretaker is there for house cleaning, maintenance, to set you up and, assist with any questions (Spanish only!).
Casa Malinche is a place to unplug - cell signal is variable. But, should you wish to work remotely we have good internet speed and Wi Fi in the house. It is the perfect place for the selective nature minded traveler, who loves adventure and sandy beaches away from crowds and mass resorts. Birds start visiting early in the morning - chocoyos, pijules, urracas... Little crabs, lizards and frogs may walk with you at night…
A 5-minute walk down the hill will take you to the beach. El Remanso beach offers the best "learn to surf" waves. You can get lessons and rent boards right there. The beach is beautiful, white sands, turquoise water and really, really hot sun all day long. A couple of ranchos right on the beach offer cold beers and simple but delicious food (quesadillas, fish tacos, mmm!).
Sunsets are spectacular. A full moon setting down the bay is a sight to wonder. The night stars will have you looking at constellations you've heard about, but never found the time to discover. The sounds of frogs, wind and ocean waves will lull you into sleep.
We love food, wine and entertaining. Our kitchen is set up with all the basic necessities to cook and enjoy company. A charcoal grill will help you improvise wonderful cooking adventures. A well-tended patch of fresh herbs right on the terrace (mint, oregano, culantro, basil, thyme and anise) may give you some inspiration.
El Remanso is a very private and quiet perfect beach. Sometimes you will have the beach all to yourself. House owners live there seasonally. Tourists from San Juan arrive typically for surfing lessons by late morning. We love quick day trips to San Juan to get our fresh catch of the day (red snapper, lobster, shrimps...). You can get a wonderful variety of seafood at “el Acopio” in San Juan’s harbour. A trip to the market and a mad rush to Pali (grocery store) for general stuff and vegetables typically complete the foraging. If you have the need for more stuff there is always Rivas (30 min) with a new La Colonia and Maxi-Pali - bigger supermarkets.
Eventually, when you feel the urge to check town, drive to San Juan! San Juan is a fun place day and night. Restaurants, bars, coffee places and WiFi everywhere can help you get your fix of crowds, noise, traffic, and night life. Boat rentals for fishing, snorkeling and exploring undeveloped beaches are available at the harbor. Last time we enjoyed an amazing ride alongside a couple of whales!

Unique house in paradise

We just loved staying here. The location is amazing - so close to the beach and surf, lessons, beach restaurants, yet a bit up the hill with good privacy. Very convenient for our group of mums and teenagers taking lessons, renting boards, going for walks, making dinner etc. One does have to go grocery shopping in town before getting here, as there are no stores around. When you do, get some cat food also for the very sweet, but very skinny and hungry cat. It does get VERY hot mid-day and early afternoon, best time for a nap and enjoying the early mornings and evenings. The caretaker was very sweet and got us another bottle of water when we ran out. Well equipped kitchen, lots of hammocks and sitting areas, though some can only be enjoyed at night ;-)

Stunningly Beautiful

This home is absolutely gorgeous. The common area (living and kitchen) is incredible. Pictures don’t do it justice how absolutely beautiful the style and view is. The caretaker was lovely and took great care of us. This is the perfect house for a group of friends or a couple families with older kids. I would not recommend for littles like we had as the stairs and the heat with no air conditioning was just too hard and uncomfortable for them especially at night. We were there in the hottest month so I understand that contributed but a couple portable plug in fans would be a great addition. Also, please note that the house is listed as equipped with all the necessities to cook but upon arrival we were informed cooking oil for grilling or cooking in the pans is not provided so make sure to buy some before you come so you can cook. Over all a lovely place and highly recommend if you think you are the right age/crew to enjoy the rustic atmosphere.

Beachy paradise

We really enjoyed our stay at Casa Malinche and would consider returning. This property is in Remanso, about 7 km from San Juan del Sur. It is a very quiet town with a few restaurants on the beach but no stores. It is a place with great beach access, surfing, and a relaxed vibe. There is poor access to transport, no busses, and taxis will take you there but won't come pick you up. This house has a lot of stairs, don't go there if that's an issue. It also has no hot water, no AC, no TV, no cell service, as advertised. We didn't miss any of this. Remanso is prone to power outages. Like most houses in the area, there are giant spiders, a family of geckos, skunks, neighborhood dogs, cats... It is rustic. However Casa Maliche is comfortable. It has a well stocked kitchen, and perfect sunset views. The wifi works well. It is a great place to slow down and relax.

Amazing sunset views.

Casa Malinche was just what we were looking for. It’s off the grid and miles from no where except from one of the best secluded beaches in Nicaragua. Surf, beer, read, repeat. All day everyday. Don’t forget to break for lunch or a sunset dinner at the beach bar to some of the best mahi mahi fish tacos I have ever had. We chose to not have a car and it was easy getting rides to and from San Juan del Sur or wherever we wanted by just talking to the guys at the bar. Haydaluz and Francisco, the caretakers, could not have been kinder. Be prepared to live amongst the jungle. This is to be expected. Sleep while listening to the ocean waves but I don’t suggest doing it with the bedroom door open. They do have nice window screens and working ceiling fans to keep you cool but don’t be shocked by small geckos/lizards roaming the walls, some spiders or even frogs hanging around. I left them alone and they in turn did as well to me. I would stay here again. Thanks for a great Vaca.

Stunning, Vibrant, and Lush Get-Away!

Our family of 7 could not have found a better place to escape and enjoy the best of this section of Nicaragua. In fact we enjoyed it so much, we extended our original 11 days to several more because we were enjoying it so much. Let me start off with a few notes about the wonderful house. The bedrooms, especially the master bedroom are plenty spacious and there are many porches with hammocks and hanging chairs for reading or just enjoying the views. The kitchen/dining/hang-out room also was plenty spacious for enjoying meals, games, conversations while also having nearly a 360 degree view of lush beauty. Walking just a few minutes for surfing and some body boarding was a big attraction for our family. The break is good for both learning and more advanced surfers. We enjoyed being close to town, but not in town and we felt the perfect balance of being remote but safe and close enough to town to get what we needed without any hassles (4 wheel drive is recommended during rainy season). Although we spent most of our time enjoying the house and immediate area. The general area has many options for excursions including other beaches such as playa Maderas for advanced surfing, and Playa Hermosa for surfing and long walks. We also visited Ometepe Island and Masaya Volcano which was active and fascinating at night. Probably our favorite excursion was to a nearby beach one evening where sea turtles are protected and where the kids were able to help some newly hatched ones get to the sea. So the trip was certainly magical and left us with good memories for life. Having said all of this, to be well rounded in this review, it should be noted that it is slightly off the beaten path and we were there in the rainy season (late June into mid-July) which did involve some rain, bugs, and humidity. None of these were big issues as the rain cooled things down, we used repellant as needed, and the occasional afternoon heat inspired us to spend more time in the ocean or hang out under a fan and read (there is no A.C. and we didn't need it as there is usually a nice breeze just when you need it). In fact all of these minor challenges increased the fun and memories in their own way, but I just wanted to make it clear that you will not be staying at an all inclusive resort. Finally, Jaime, the owner is very responsive and will help however he can and will provide you with any information you request about the house or the area. We hope to return!

Amazing setup and view

Really loved our stay at Casa Malinche. The space is perfect; an all-windows common open space, where you have the kitchen, dinning and living room all together. Really nice to have to move through the exterior to get to the rooms, you feel that the place is as much exterior than interior. Amazing view of the ocean pretty from anywhere on site. Jaime also replies fast for any questions and can give good advice regarding Nicaragua, he can also give you some contacts that could help you once in the country.

FANTASTIC! A piece of heaven on earth!

Our friends and I stayed at this little piece of paradise in February 2017. Not only is the location in proximity to beach and San Juan del Sur perfect, the caretakers are awesome and always willing to help. The owner is extremely responsive and provided all needed information. We were lucky to have picture perfect days and truly enjoyed the BBQ and hammock areas . The house is rustic and the layout superb. The workout of the walk to the beach was awesome and you really do hear the and see the ocean from the balcony. Thank you Mr. JAime, Marina and Luis. We will return soon!!!!

Beautiful and peaceful location

An amazing get away with good surf and friendly people. We loved Casa Malinche for our family surf trip. Nice to be out of San Juan but close by. The house had great beach access and the rooms were very comfortable. We enjoyed bbq's on the deck, swinging in hammocks and of course the amazing views!

What a breath of fresh air! (Feb 2015)

The owners are fabulous and so helpful and were available to us and their onsite staff. The home was a slice of heaven. Fresh air, close to the beach, amazing nature sounds and close to SJDS on roads that do not require 4wheel drive. The hamacas were certainly one of our favourite spots - the open deck area was a great space between buildings to get out of the midday sun, enjoy the bbq in the evening, have coffee in the morning. And the kitchen - oh the view! No need for tv with the nature channel all around. We can't wait to go back!!

Casa Malinche is our winter vacation home in El Remanso, San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. After purchasing we spent a couple of months repairing the property. Just recently we upgraded a bit more. Gardens are a work in progress waiting for Nicaragua's rainy season). We have started to meet other Canadians either owning or renting. They are a lovely bunch! Lizette and I live and work in Toronto and go back to El Remanso frequently. We love listening to the ocean and the sing song of so many birds visiting at dawn or sunset. We have great respect for the environment and enjoy both nature and San Juan’s active port town life-style. We take pride in our properties and have a live-in caretaker couple (Hayda Luz and Francisco). They receive our guests, provide keys, housekeeping and responsive attention to minor maintenance and anything in between. Casa Malinche is our place to unplug. It is now equipped, fully furnished and ready to be shared with many of the amenities of home!

Why they chose this property

We purchased the property through perfect serendipity. We knew and loved the beach but never planned to own a beach place. It has been a steep learning curve but we are enjoying every minute of each hot sunny day!

What makes this property unique

Every time we go we discover new little things. The beach is so perfect! White sands, clear water, small waves and a quiet, intimate feeling. Far from the madding crowds at San Juan but close enough enjoy!
