Spacious stone villa with views and private pool, walking distance to the beach
This fabulous stone house is south-facing with panoramic views from all 4 bedrooms, 3 outdoor terraces and balcony. It was built in the 18th century by a local sea captain and is very spacious (200sqm of internal space). Just 3 minutes walk from the sea down a little track, this is an ideal location for relaxation, water-sports and other outdoor activities. Medieval Korcula is just across the straits while beautiful Ston and Dubrovnik are easy day trips.

The views are stunning. The house is traditional & clean, with plenty of space & sun decks, lovely pool. extra bits like yoga matts beach towels. A welcome bottle of wine & wine & chocolates on departure were a very nice touch.
Beds changed half way through the week was a treat.
We had a couple of issues but the owner & house keeper were super fast to respond. Needs more shade & maybe a little tlc here & there but property has just changed hands so think this will happen.
It’s a bit off the beaten track, away from the crowds which is gorgeous for stary skies. very peaceful but lots of steep steps up to the property, in the heat is quite a challenge at times. You will need bikes or a car. To get to the super market to get water etc.
A lovely time was had here.
Thank you
Emma
We took the opportunity to have an late spring escape and chose The Captains House because of the views and facilities there. We were not disappointed. It is obvious the owners have gone to great lengths to make this a special place and have clearly very recently invested time in effort to make the Villa look and work perfectly. Thank you Matthew and Kerry for you help in planning our trip and we hope to return soon.
Vielen Dank!
All was perfect and looks as amazing as on pictures. Just go for it!

Magnificent
Beautiful spacious old stone house with lots of terrace space for sitting outside. A lovely pool that was ample size for our family of 5 - including 3 grown up sons. Easy walking distance to a few restaurants, although nicer offerings to be had in Orebic, a short drive away. Lovely areas to swim in the sea within walking distance. Quite a steep climb from the car to the house and from the beach. Roads narrow, no hard shoulders and a bit scary! Collection and drop off of keys worked very smoothly, and the caretaker responded very quickly the one time we had a query. A most picturesque setting. Great watersports. We went on a day trip to Montenegro which was a big mistake as we queued at the border for an hour and a half in each direction, but there's plenty to do locally without traveling too far. We were fascinated to see some many beautiful houses in the vicinity in such disrepair and we would have loved some history of the house/area to check out our theories. A fabulous location for a break away from it all. We cannot recommend it highly enough!

Beautiful old house lovingly restored with stunning views
This is a beautiful house with plenty of space for a family vacation. the climb up the steps to the house is not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties or very elderly and struggle with heavy luggage but views from house and peaceful setting are worth it. Also need to take care coming up and down at night as limited lighting. House well equipped and welcome pack a lovely touch, local representative was a lovely lady and on hand no matter what you needed. Definitely need a car to explore area but some lovely restaurants and close to the beach. If you want a relaxing vacation this is an excellent location. A good 2 1/2 hour drive from Dubrovinik Airport and the road can be tricky but stunning scenery.

Beautiful stone villa with a view
This is a wonderful property in a lovely small village. We spent 4 days here after a 7 day boat trip and it was perfect for relaxing and spending family time together.
It's a wind surfers paradise but if that's not your thing then it's a short ferry trip to Korcula or you can hire bicycles and cycle to the next village or if you have a car you can tour the wine region.
You may be stressed by the uphill climb when you first arrive with suitcases etc. But once you are settled and without luggage the walk is very manageable.

The Captain's House was was spacious and well equipped with all conveniences.
We enjoyed our stay in the Captain's House. It was airy and comfortable with lots of room for a party of 6 people. Children enjoyed the pool which was well taken of by a local man. The steep and long stairs are perhaps not to be recommended for the elderly and small children. Ours, however, were 11 and 7 years, so no problem. Good execise for the 76 year old grandmother too.
The nearby villages of Orebic, Viganj and especially Loviste are nice places not overly spoiled by tourism. Should have stayed two weeks.

Beautiful, historic house in a stunning setting.
This lovingly restored historic house has some of the best views in the world. Well equipped, with many historic features preserved and restored, the house gives a warm and friendly welcome. The views from the house are just breathtaking, and change by the minute. It is situated along an ancient travellers' route, full of olives and wild flowers in season. If you travel in spring as we did, you can build a warm wood fire in the hearth. The Captain's House is a perfect place for a relaxed holiday, and only a few minutes walk down to the crystal clear sea for a swim. I have stayed there twice now, and can't wait to go back another year.

Sympathetically and beautifully restored. Wow!
A beautiful house with all the essentials plus one of the most amazing views you could ever imagine. My family and I have visited the Captain's House a couple of times now and both the property and area always leave us wanting to come back again. It's simply stunning and a great find! Thank you for renting out such a beautiful property and sharing it with others.

Beautiful home from home for our family.
Great hillside location and very cosy accommodation suitable for a couples getaway or family adventure with young or older children. There's a short uphill walk from where you park your car to the villa, but it's worth it as the sunsets and views from the veranda are breathtaking.
Restaurants and waterfront are a short walk from the villa allowing one to delight in the local wine and cuisine and meander home.
May not be suitable for physical disabilities with bedrooms located on the second floor but perfect for any parents travelling with children with special needs such as autism as the location is quiet and calming.

Perfect break away from the hustle bustle
Our stay at the Captain's House was all we had hoped it would be. Loads of room inside, large and comfortable bedrooms all of which had an ensuite bathroom and really well equipped kitchen. There are plenty of different spaces outside where we could all be together or have quiet reading moments too. The pool area is secluded and peaceful.
Viganj offered us everything we needed and we loved visiting the nearby restaurants and bars. Our teenagers very happily and safely ventured out in the evenings leaving us big kids to enjoy our evenings look out over the beautiful views with a quiet glass [or two] of great local wine.
We will return.

Best overall stonehouse for rent in Viganj
Our family is a regular Summer visitor to Viganj, we have stayed before in various other seaside and hillside houses in the area. The Captain's House finally checked all the boxes the we were allways looking for--great view but still not to far from sea, great , large, safe pool, beautiful large house with quality kitchen and furnishings--- all this sheltered from neighbours and the camping crowds. Will go back---the search is over.

About the host
Hosted by Matthew Richardson
I live in England with my wife and 2 children. My wife and I both work, and spend many of our holidays, Summer and Winter, in Croatia, where we have made many friends and have really fallen in love with the country.
Why they chose this property
We bought the property because of its convenience to get to, with the increasing number of direct air links to the UK, and because of the stunning views. Also, as a 300 year old property, it's pretty unique.
What makes this property unique
We love the Viganj area because of its outstanding natural beauty, crystal clear sea and quality of food and wine which seems to get better and better each time we go back. It's also a particularly safe area which is important to us with two children.
The house is set up a hill, which affords incredible views. The house is set in a little hamlet of old houses which are being restored. There are little pathways between the villages that you can walk along.
