About this property

Comfortable and Spacious Traditional Farmhouse With Spectacular View and award.

We were very pleased to receive an Excellence award from the Tourism Association May 2015.
Cortijo El Pino is a large, well positioned, modernised and comfortably furnished farmhouse set around a traditional Andalusian courtyard (patio). It sits in its own olive grove (with fruit trees) within the Adelantado community of olive growers and only 1km from the main road through the Subbetica National Park. Being only 7km from the ancient town of Iznajar with its 32km lake, less than an hour from the coast and Malaga, and not much more from Granada and Cordoba, you are ideally situated to combine relaxing on your own terraces and by the pool with exploring what the area has to offer. There are shops, bars and a restaurant within 1.5km which can be accessed by road, or cross country on a footpath. The beach at Iznajar has a restaurant bar. The pool's solar heating means that it is usually comfortable to swim from May to October. Electrical heating can be added for may/June or October for an additional cost. 10MB Wifi is available free.
Three separate doors lead from the patio to different parts of the house, a summer kitchen and a bathroom. The courtyard is protected from the sun in the summer by a large sail, and contains a table and chairs and a gas BBQ grill -and this is the heart of the house. It is prettily decorated with local ceramics and painting by Susan's mother.
Through one door there is a two story house containing, upstairs, two bedrooms (one with 160cm double and one with twins - both 200cm long) a house bathroom with bath, shower, bidet, basin and WC, and a sitting room.

There sitting room has a DVD player and a CD player and a selection of DVDs and CDs as well as guide books, reference books and reading books. It also has an effective log fire for the winter. There are a few games and toys,

Downstairs is the dining room with table and chairs, and additional comfortable seating and TV. The refurbished kitchen next to it is fully fitted with oven, microwave and fridge and has an amazing view over the valley. As we love cooking you will find it has everything you need if you decide to cook at home.
Next to the kitchen is a larder with an additional fridge and high chair for children.

A second door from the courtyard leads to the lion room with two single beds, which is usually made up as a large double, with an ensuite bathroom. This room interconnects indoors with the casita.

The third door leads to the casita which has a downstairs sitting room and bathroom (shower, basin, WC) and an upstairs twin bedroom. This is the most traditional part of the house and has lower ceilings. Interconnects indoors with the lion room.

There is central heating for the winter and there are fans and air conditioning for the summer.

The summer kitchen contains its own equipment, another fridge and washing and washing up machines. It is between the courtyard and the western terrace with sight of the pool.

The western terrace is set with table and chairs and overlooks the garden and pool and a lovely place under the grape vines. There is a lovely view up the valley and from which to watch the sunset.

In season there are grapes and figs to pick.

The pool is 4.5 x 8 metres and is solar heated free, and with additional electrical heating by request at a cost of £10 a day. The depth is 1.2-1.5m and so it is good for pool sports. It is completely fenced and looks over the garden and valley. There are lie chairs provided. Table tennis can be set up on the terrace.

There is parking for two cars in front of the garage and plenty of room for others above the house on the era (an old wheat threashing area).

We stayed for 13 nights in August. Great location to get away from the hustle and bustle. Lovely and peaceful by the pool with great views. With Olive Trees as far as the eye could see. Well equipped villa with everything you need for your stay. Well stocked kitchen with lovely touches such as espresso pots and orange juicer. The two fridges came in useful to cool our drinks in the 40 degree heat. The air conditioning was also a Godsend and worked really well. It was a fantastic location, only an hour from Malaga and also an hour from Granada. The nearest town, Iznajar was a short drive away. We enjoyed wandering the pretty streets and food in a local restaurant. Steve the Manager was very efficient with a few minor queries we had during our stay. We hope to come again.

Family holiday
We really enjoyed our stay at Susan and John’s. The pool was fantastic and much needed to cool down during the heat of the day. We stayed in the main house and the air con was very efficient and cooled down very quickly as we kept shutters and blinds closed. The kitchen is well stocked and the pool kitchen perfect for cold drinks and snacks during the day. Beds were comfortable. Good location for exploring Andalusia. Excellent communication with Susan. We had a fantastic holiday.

1 week stay in Iznajar with kids and grandparents
Lovely farmhouse with well maintained pool, plenty of outdoor space to eat in the sun or shade and easy access to local amenities. The surrounding olive groves are beautiful and you feel in the middle of countryside, even though it is only a 1 km drive down to the nearby restaurants and a BP garage where you can get milk, wine, beer etc. Plenty of space for a family of 6 , great BBQ and kitchen facilities. Iznajar is only a few miles away and a great place to visit for amazing views across the lake, a few cafes and bars, butchers and small supermarket. We also enjoyed a trip to Antequera just 45 minutes away with amazing fortress and some great tapas bars. The churros at La Antequera were top notch and I can well recommend this cafe for a pit stop. All in all a great place to relax and use as a base to explore this stunning part of Andalucia.

We loved the salt water pool nestled in the hills
This traditional stone house looks out over the hills and is perched amongst olive groves. The thick stone walls, shady courtyard and terraces make for a tranquil and cool hideaway from the midday sun. Eating dinner on the terrace under the vine was charming, with the handy "pool kitchen" nearby being very practical. The salt water pool was a particular treat and safely fenced off to suit those with children. We stayed in the little "apartment" off the courtyard and enjoyed the extra space of a separate living room and private bathroom from our friends in the main house. The aircon was extremely effective, though the traditional design off the house meant that we rarely needed it.

Magical retreat that you don't want to leave
Attention to detail lovely interesting art work lovely crockery, and the house had a traditional Spainish feel and had been so tastefully modernised.Everything you could possibly want in the kitchen was there even for baking. My favourite place was the casita next to the court yard area.I couldn't fault El Pino with it amazing views.I also enjoyed sitting in the swing chair by the pool watching the sun set.I so look forward to returning one day

Beautiful property in ideal location
This property is in a wonderful location. Only 50 easy minutes' drive from Malaga airport the house is positioned high above valleys with views over olive groves to far mountains. Unexpectedly and perfectly the road is so, so quiet. Very few cars pass the bottom of the driveway, but local access to petrol stations, wonderful restaurants, local villages and hence supermarkets is surprisingly easy. Everything anyone might need is nearby. Cordoba, Granada.. All of Andalucia is within possible driving distance. The house itself offers clean and well-equipped accommodation. Every need is addressed.. A guest could ask for nothing more. Bathrooms give perfectly adequate hot and cold running water: the showers are exceptional. Beds (and bedding) are very comfortable. There is plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. Two kitchens serve the property.. Both have dishwashers, 'fridges, cutlery and crockery.. The swimming pool is much larger than my experience of previous rental establishments - lengths are possible! Well-maintained and heated it is a wonderful source of relaxation at any time of the day. Also to be mentioned is the table tennis table and other fun equipment readily available. All water through the cold taps is thoughtfully drinkable.. This is a paradise for anyone wishing to either "simply relax and stay 'at home' with the pool", or wishing to use it as a luxurious homebase for travel in the area, or a mixture of both. NO, I would not recommend it to anyone else.. I want to keep it for my own! So, of course, it is highly recommended to anyone. A very high standard of rental property.

A perfect holiday
We have spent 2 holidays in this house, both in September. The weather each time has been warm and we have been able to spend the entire day out of doors, eating in the courtyard or swimming or lounging by the pool. The indoor areas are spacious and comfortable with good stocks of books and games and a bridge table. Bedrooms are a good size with comfortable beds and a good supply of bed linen.. There is abundant hot water. There are outstanding views and some fabulous walks, not to mention the ready supply of a good variety of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Fabulous break away from crowds, beautiful setting
We stayed here with a group of friends and all our kids, and we had a fantastic time. The views are sensational across olive groves and this has a nice classic Spanish farmhouse feel, away from it all. It was perfectly set up for kids - the owners arranged pack 'n' plays and high chairs - and a fantastically well equiped kitchen making food prep easy. We grilled most meals in the beautiful enclosed courtyard. The pool was a great hit with everyone and it was really nice that it was enclosed so we didn't have to worry about a thing. The kids had great fun picking grapes and figs from the grounds and the table tennis table was a definite hit! All in all we had a fantastic week catching up with friends and we would definitely come back.

About the host

Hosted by John and Susan Behrens

Host profile image
John's a retired circuit judge and enjoys playing golf and tennis. Sue is a photographer (plenty of evidence around the house!) and musician and now spends her time Church Recording for NADFAS. This involves preparing a museum style catalogue of furnishings in a church. In recent years she has started quilting so over time more quilts will appear on the beds.

Why they chose this property

We've always loved Spain and the Spanish. We particularly fell for this area because of the proximity of the lake, the distance from the coast (not too near!), the distance from the airport (not too far), the shape of the countryside and the warmth of the local people. We love being able to get to the main roads quickly and still be able to be peaceful at home. The views were a bonus.

What makes this property unique

We quite often have people to stay so the days take two styles ; either we are off early to sight see somewhere - there is so much choice around and the roads are convenient in every direction; or we hang around locally - walking, horse riding, playing tennis and swimming, or even reading, writing and painting - sometimes just chatting and sleeping. we have also discovered sea kayaking with the grandchildren!
There are several restaurants near by that we really like, so we quite often eat out a bit, even though we enjoy cooking.
There are a number of fiestas and ferias in the neighbouring villages during the year and it is fun to be around when they are taking place.
