About this property

Augustus - Hilltop Medieval Escape with Panoramic View

Casa Spello's convenient location in the heart of the historic center and its outstanding panoramic views are what makes this historic medieval property one of the most desirable in the region. Staying at Casa Spello is an experience. As our guests put it: 'It oozes charm'.

Over 500 years old, Casa Spello is a newly renovated medieval property, located in the historic center of Spello, a hillside village with a rich history which predates Roman times. The property, nestled within the ancient city walls, boasts one of the most panoramic views in all of Spello; on a clear day, you can see the church towers of Assisi, Perugia, Montefalco, Foligno and the rolling hills covered in olive groves and vineyards which surround Spello. Our large garden/orchard, surrounded by an 1800 year old Roman wall, is an ideal setting for al fresco dining, sunset watching over a glass of Montefalco wine, or sipping coffee before the day's adventures.

The property is over 500 years old, restored by a local architect to provide it with all the modern amenities, while preserving its genuine medieval ambiance. It once was a home with two large 'cantinas' (cellars) where the family used to make wine and press their olive oil. It is now available for rent on a short-term or long-term basis.

Originally it was built with hand carved mountain stone - a beautiful peach color stone which came from the nearby Subasio Mountain.

The apartment is elegantly furnished with antique-style and rustic furnishings, and has a fully equipped kitchen for your cooking pleasure. There is also a fireplace. It is tastefully decorated with Umbrian handcrafted fixtures such as hand-blown glass, tiles and hand-painted ceramics from nearby Deruta. This apartment sleeps two to four people. The convenient location of Casa Spello makes it easy to walk to the wonderful local restaurants, markets, boutiques and train station in this quaint village.

For larger parties, the Augustus (1 BR, sleeps 4) and Tiberius (3 BR, sleeps 6) apartments can be opened to each other. The Augustus apartment has direct access to the garden.

Magnificent Casa SPELLO!

We loved this property, especially our most gracious and generous hosts Gina & Dan! The apartment is well located, clean, well equipped with full kitchen air conditioning, free wi-fi, amazing views, washing machine and garden clothes line for drying clothes. Patio overlooks the entire valley and is quiet and private-off the beaten path. Gina and Dan showed us their favorite spots including driving us to a special restaurant and sharing our birthday/anniversary dinner! I highly recommend this property! Grazie Grazie!!!!!

Medieval Paradise

Staying at Casa Spello was a dream come true. I watched Breathtaking views from the garden every evening as the sun set. It was spectacular! On several occasions I enjoyed a snack of cheese and wine (purchased in the town of Spello) as I watched the sun set. The owner and her helper were very warm and welcoming. They both went WAY above and beyond what was expected. I will absolutely return to the town of Spello. I am hoping to plan a girls trip this next time.

Wonderful Italian Hilltown stay

Italian Hilltown stay: Our stay at Casa Spello was even more delightful than we had anticipated. Our apartment was Tastefully decorated —it felt like our Italian home away from home. Communication with the owner Gina was always timely and friendly. Nadia , the on-site manager, is wonderful. She was readily available to help us in anyway we requested. The setting of the facility is storybook, with windows opening to a beautiful Italian countryside view, and a sweet garden that included fig trees and grape arbors— perfect for an evening glass of wine. This was truly special stay : 5 stars all around!

A PERFECT, RELAXING STAY

AS SOON AS I WALKED INTO CASA SPELLO (TIBERIUS APARTMENT), I WAS ENCHANTED. HERE WAS A 700 YEAR OLD BUILDING (FASCINATING!) THAT HAD BEEN METICULOUSLY RESTORED WITH ALL MODERN CONVENIENCES AND COMFORTS. WE LACKED NOTHING! BE SURE TO HAVE AS MANY COFFEES AND LUNCHES ON THE GARDEN TERRACE - IT IS BREATHTAKING . FILLED WITH FLOWERS AND A GORGEOUS VIEW, YOU'LL WANT TO SPEND A LOT OF TIME OUT THERE. AND GINA AND DAN ARE THE PERFECT HOSTS - THEY INTRODUCED US TO SOME LOVELY PLACES, WHERE WE HAD AMAZING MEALS, GAVE LOTS OF GOOD ADVICE ON WHERE TO EAT AND VISIT, ETC. WE TRAVEL A GOOD BIT, AND THIS IS DEFINITELY ONE OF OUR BEST VACATIONS EVER! THANK YOU, GINA AND DAN.

Paradise in Spello

My five week stay at Casa Spello in the Tiberius unit in April, 2011 exceeded all my expectations. The view, the location, the amenities, everything was beautiful. There is a wonderful garden where you can dine (weather permitting), view the sunset, just relax and read and enjoy the setting. If you are lucky to be there when the hostess is also there you are in for a treat. Gina's helpful tips, guidance and overall concern for your total enjoyment went "above and beyond" what any owner would provide. She knows the best of everything in Spello...restaurants, cafes, shopping, etc. and she may even cook you a meal! Even if she is not there, a binder in each unit provide all of the information you will need to make your stay an enjoyable experience. Spello is a charming village in a perfect location for exploring all of Umbria. You can take day trips and then return to your own beautiful retreat at Casa Spello. I definitely will return!

Spellbound by Spello!

We were lucky enough to stay here for 10 nights in September, and we loved both the accommodation and the location. The accommodation itself (flat 1 Augustus) is a very spacious apartment on 2 levels, with an entrance hall, toilet, kitchen, living room and then on an upper floor a bedroom and bathroom. The rooms were all spacious, and, as the flat is part of a historic building, they were really characterful with lots of exposed stonework. That said, they were well-furnished and surprisingly light and airy considering the age of the building. The apartment has a small balcony which is accessible from outside and from the kitchen, and which was big enough for a seat and a table and 2 chairs, so bigger than we expected and lovely to sit out at. There was air con but we didn't need it, as we found the rooms cool enough with the use of the fan in the kitchen and bedroom. The WiFi was very fast which is a bonus! The flat is obviously where the owner stays when she visits, as there is her stuff in some of the cupboards. The location of the apartment is fantastic, right in the historic heart of Spello, which is an absolutely lovely medieval town in a great location in central Umbria. The location in the town was quiet yet only a few minutes’ walk into the town centre. There are lots of really great restaurants in the town: we ate at 6 different ones and there were others we didn't try. All were good and none were expensive. The owner Gina was very easy to contact, and the local property manager Nadia was also very pleasant and available on WhatsApp, so communication was fine although we didn't need any help during our stay. The town and the location are simply unbeatable, and the accommodation is quality. Really very very good. If we were to criticise anything we would say that (a) the accommodation is a walk uphill from the nearest car park, so not suitable for anyone with mobility problems (b) the mozzies are murderous but luckily there are insect screens in the flat (c) the flat does suffer a bit from road noise as the main dual carriageway road between Spoleto and Assissi passes at the bottom of the hill (the town is on a hill) and some traffic noise does drift up, so it is not silent when sitting outside. That said, the road makes the location great for accessing the rest of Umbria and even Tuscany. There is a large garden but we hardly used it, as we found the balcony enough for our needs. So, overall, spellbinding! We loved it

Fantastic property in an amazing town

We loved everything about this property and town. From the earliest communications, Gina was a great host, and her commitment to a top level experience, was exemplified in Nadia her local support and meet and greet person. Nadia was exceptional in her focus on helping us with whatever was needed. The apartment/house is great, and exactly as shown. Spello itself is now our favourite Italian town/village. It is just the right size - allowing it to be a true local/working town, but also with the number of visitors to provide extra services and exceptional dining experiences. We'll be back!

Casa Spello, so amazing you will never want to leave (but please do so we can come back)

It is hard to summarize Casa Spello, to do it in a word I would say Fantastico. This place has all the Italian charm you could want and then some. When you stay in a place that is 700+ years old you are not sure what to expect. Gina, our host has updated this home to include modern conveniences all while keep the charm of a classic Italian villa. First the location is AMAZING. Built into the wall of this hilltop village you have fantastic views from every window of the Umbrian Valley. We spent HOURS looking out over the Italian countryside and had some amazing sunsets. There is also a beautiful communal garden that share the same view. As for Spello, it is the hilltop village that is JUST RIGHT, Not big and crowded like Assisi and not so small there are no services. You will have 40+ restaurants to chose from so there is no need to get in a car to go to dinner, just walk 350 feet to Via Giuseppe Garibaldi (Spello’s Main Street) where there are two restaurants right there. One posh that is rated as one of the 365 best restaurants in Italy and one that is cheap and cheerful. Both are amazing value, actually this is one of the best parts about Spello, just about EVERWHERE is amazing value. You can have an appetizer, a main and a 1/2 liter of house wine for two starting at €25 and you can keep it under €50 even in the posh places. Yes you can spend more if you explore the wine list but don’t be afraid of the “casa vino” (house wine) this area is known for its wine so even the most affordable wines are amazing. Sorry to go off topic a bit but we can not say anything but good about our whole experience with Spello the town. Now back to Casa Spello. The layout is nice with the living, large kitchen and HALF BATH downstairs and the bedroom up with a full bath with dual sinks and ample shower. The kitchen was nicely appointed with gas cooktop, oven and large fridge. The kitchen table was strategical placed in front of the window with the incredible views. The living room had a comfortable L shaped sofa with a daybed and a working fireplace (the weather was far to nice to use). If one needed more space our unit could be combined with another to give you 2+ bedrooms. Gina has an in-town manager who was wonderful and can give you as much help as you need such as a tour of Spello with her lifelong residency, she knows everyone. Needless to say we REALLY ENJOYED our stay and would highly recommend.

Beautiful Views

This apartment had awesome views from the windows, good Wifi, and spacious and comfortable rooms. The kitchen was great as it allowed a break from eating out all the time. Spello itself is a very beautiful city. You will definitely enjoy the stay. The only little inconvenience is the parking in that it's far away. But it's a nice walk. Can't complain.

Look No Further for a Place To Stay!!

What a Gem! Perfect location with a Killer View! Beautiful 2 level apartment within the castle walls of Spello. Our apartment was absolutely charming with tons of character and only a few blocks down or up to food, bars, shopping and most importantly....gelato! This town even has a wonderful Enoteca. Our hostess Gina was fabulous. She was extremely knowledgeable about the area and places to go and we were never disappointed. We will never stay anywhere else when we return to Umbria Region!

Charming, comfortable, and cool

My mom and I had a trip of our lifetime last month to celebrate her 70th birthday. Spello was absolutely charming. And it was so perfectly situated to other beautiful towns. We just couldn't even squeeze in everything we wanted to do in 2 weeks. Casa Spello was an ideal spot for us. As we walked up our first night we realized that it is actually built into the wall of the city, which means it has a supreme view. We bought local pastas and produce and cooked in the kitchen. We were in a lower unit, the Mark Anthony, and it stayed amazingly cool. Many of our meals were in the lovely garden, with the view. Nadia was wonderful, helping us with all of our questions and treating us like old friends. And Gina was great, also answering all of our many questions ahead of time (we are not world travelers so had a lot of them!) I would most definitely recommend Casa Spello. Just need to figure out how to get back there again!

Great view, medieval charm, quaint & comfortable

We stayed for a month in the Cleopatra (large studio - type apartment). The apartments share access to a spacious garden with terrific valley views & sunsets. The apartments have all necessary amenities & are very spacious & comfortable; boasting architectural charm, inviting atmosphere and a great location near the top of Spello (our favorite Umbria town). The owners were most accomodating, everything was as described and Nadia took great care of us, from getting us settled to making suggestions. We had a wonderful trip, enhanced by this lovely property.

Charming apartment in charming town

My husband and I could not have been more satisfied with our experience of the apt and of Spello. We were there 6 nights and never could get use to the beauty of the village and the good fortune of finding the apartment. Our place had a large kitchen, laundry room, three bedrooms with gorgeous views out of the two upstairs bedrooms, and two bathrooms upstairs. I loved the beautiful stone walls and the lovingly done and respectful restoration done of what are ancient buildings. This was such a treat that added greatly to our stay in what had to be the most charming town we visited on our trip. Highly recommend!

GReat family stay-beautiful, convenient

My family-grandparents, parents and 2 small children enjoyed a week at Casa Spello. The home is beautiful and in an excellent location. The adjoining apartments (Augustus and Tiberius) we rented were spacious and gave us all plenty of space to have privacy as well as be together when we wanted. The 3 1/2 bathrooms sure helped with a large group! The location is excellent, we walked everywhere within the village and were able to drive through Umbria and a bit of Tuscany on different outings. We all had cars, but we had friends that caught the train to Florence, it was very convenient. Gina provides plenty of information about the area and how to make it all work and Nadia is there for any needs while visiting. She was eager to help in any way. Spello is a beautiful little hill town, with friendly people and several good restaurants and cafes to choose from. Thankfully, it is not a tourist trap-it feels very real! Loved our experience at Casa Spello!

Casa Spello - Perfect location for everything in Umbria

My family and I stayed at Casa Spello for a week in April and had the most wonderful time. The proximity to the main square and all restaurants was perfect- we easily walked everywhere! The views from the upstairs unit were beautiful and there is a beautiful garden down below where we could sit and have a glass of wine and enjoy the afternoon. Gina was most accommodating to us - making sure to acquire an extra crib for us as we were traveling with two young children. Nadia greeted us when we arrived and was so helpful and pleasant. I would definitely recommend staying at Casa Spello if you are planning to visit Spello, It's charming, beautiful, and you feel as if you are living in a fairy-tale!

Casa Spello great base for Umbrian holiday

My wife and I stayed in the Marc Anthony apartment in Casa Spello for four weeks in January 2016. Although it was winter time, we were very comfortable in this cosy apartment. It is very well appointed and we had everything we needed for the sort of holiday we prefer - having a home base where we can prepare our own food, set out on day trips and return at the end of the day to a comfortable home. The owner, Gina, provided clear instructions and offered lots of suggestions for dining and sightseeing opportunities. With its two bedrooms, the apartment was big enough to be comfortable even when our son and daughter-in-law visited for a couple of days. There is only one bathroom, so for a longer stay with more than two guests, one of the other apartments in the building might be preferable. The thick stone walls kept us warm and we rarely used the central heating. Coming from a warm part of Australia, we are not accustomed to central heating, and only turned it on a few times to warm the place, then turned it off again. The beds are comfortable and there are plenty of blankets and duvets. Spello has many advantages compared to other towns we visited, as it is not only very charming and attractive, but it is also quite lively. Even in the middle of winter there were plenty of shops and restaurants etc open for business, and lots of movement in the streets and bars, particularly on the weekends. Many other places we visited were much quieter. The weather was kind and allowed us to go on lots of walks. Some were long walks to neighbouring towns, but it was also possible to head out along any of the small roads outside the town and enjoy the beautiful countryside. As Spello is on the train line, it is possible to take trips to Rome, Perugia and further afield. Some days we stayed home and enjoyed relaxing in the apartment, strolling around the town and even enjoying lunch or aperitivo on the terrace. The apartment offers views across the valley. The garden would be lovely in the warmer seasons, I am sure. It is difficult to be far from anything in a small hill town, but Casa Spello is very centrally located, with restaurants, shops and bars just around the corner. It is also very quiet and peaceful, as it is situated on the edge of town, with no close neighbours below, and no thorough traffic. I would recommend Spello for a holiday, and I'm sure you would be very happy with the Marc Anthony apartment.

Trip of a lifetime in Spello

We recently stayed at Casa Spello, located in the hilltop village of Spello in Umbria, near Assisi, for a few days after being in Rome for two weeks. I work for a local lifestyle magazine here in the Bay Area, and have stayed at many charming hotels - but this is different - and better. Casa Spello worked its magic on us the minute we arrived. We took an easy two-hour train ride from the Termini Station in Rome, rolling along scenic terrain with charming hilltop towns dotting the countryside. It is an easy walk into town from the train station at Spello. The caretaker, Nadia, was there to meet us upon arrival and insisted upon toting our suitcases along the charming cobblestone streets. We instantly felt "at home" in Spello. The people are so nice and friendly - very different vibe than in Rome. Casa Spello occupies a prime corner lot in the town of Spello - with sweeping views of the Umbrian Valley. The unit was so well-thought out and cozy. Best news - had all modern conveniences without being intrusive. T.V., wi-fi, well-stocked kitchen - all the modern amenities encased in an amazing medieval home. (NOTE: We were staying at first-rate accommodations in Rome, but, it had nothing on the shower in our unit at Casa Spello. It is a rare and beautiful thing to have a shower that strong in italy!) After Nadia showed us all the conveniences of our apartment, we set out on foot to explore. There are a lot of little stores and restaurants, with breathtaking views at each turn. The town is very manageable to navigate, and has won prizes for having the most beautiful flowered pathways in Umbria. We took an evening drive about 20 minutes away to the hilltop town of Collepino. The La Locanda bar is a MUST - and the local restaurant, Taverna San Silvestro, offered literally some of the best food we had ever tasted. Order the lamb and pasta with porcini mushrooms and truffles, and tell them you are guests of Gina Waldman at Casa Spello. Everyone seems to know and adore Gina! We were treated like family. We had a SECOND dinner that evening in Spello at La Locanda del Postiglione at via Roma 5. Again - never tasted a truffle crepe so delicious in our lives. Hands down the winner of all dinners throughout Italy - and right there in Spello. Again,be sure to mention you are staying at Gina's home at Casa Spello. They will be thrilled. The next couple days, we toured Assisi and Perugia - both just 30-40 minutes away from Spello. Both very quaint and pictures

Wonderful apartment in hillside town of Spello

My wife and I stayed in the Augustus apartment for 3 weeks in July 2015. The apartment is situated very near the main plazza of Spello. The view of the surrounding towns is spectacular. The apartment is well equipped with everything needed for a short or longer stay. Very comfortable. The owner was very helpful with events and things to do while we were in Spello. We really enjoyed Casa Spello. Many nice restaurants in Spello and also in nearby towns.

I am a human rights advocate. I live in San Francisco, California. I have been awarded several prizes for my human rights work. The work I do for human rights is pro-bono. My husband and I travel all over the world. I speak English, Italian, Francais , Espanol and I love hosting people from all over the world in my Casa Spello. I have family in Italy and family in the USA. My husband Dan has a property management company based in San Francisco, but he lets me manage Casa Spello. He is also involved in civil rights causes and served as a volunteer in the Peace Corps in India for two years. Of course when I have serious issues with Casa Spello regarding a frozen pipe or anything to do with the building, I consult with him. But, I deal with all the bureaucracy in the Italian government offices.

Casa Spello for us is a "labor of love" and a pride of ownership.

Why they chose this property

My husband Dan and I bought this property because we fell in love with its magnificent views and the fact that it was built in hand carved stones from the nearby Subasio mountains.

Spello took us under its spell and in fact this medieval villas has recently been declared by Smarter Travel as one of 11 of the most beautiful secret villages in Italy.

What makes this property unique

The property offers breathtaking sunsets from our windows and sweeping views from our beautiful garden. Sunset watching in our garden enjoying a glass of local wine and an appetizer is a must and this is what our guests love the most. The inside of the units are in hand carved peach color stone which gives the interior a warm glow.
This warm soft light creates a very romantic atmosphere.
