About this property

Huge Saline Heated Pool, Amazing views, WI-FI, 4bed+4 bath, IT054013C274020111

Villa Quercia Bargello is situated in stunning countryside within walking distance to the village near to Citta' di Castello and Cortona and consists of 4 BEDROOMS, all with own PRIVATE BATHROOMS.
The property has been restored from an original tobacco tower retaining many original features such as chestnut beams throughout and beautiful flooring but adding modern comforts. The views from this property are amongst the best you will ever experience and the covered terrace with comfy sofa and armchairs from where to lounge and take in the views, perhaps with a glass of wine or two will soon become one of your favourite spots. The pool is huge, 16mx6m, saline and heated and just perfect if you like to swim as you can do real lengths as well as for playing. The village has a small shop where you can get fresh bread in the mornings and the restaurant in the next village is one of the best in the area. Cortona, Citta' di Catello, Montone, Umbertide, Gubbio and so many more amazing places are just a short drive away. The perfect location for your holiday in Umbria.
The bedrooms in Villa Quercia are all very spacious and the two upstairs bedrooms are master bedrooms with double beds. One of the master bedrooms on the upper floor has it's own private terrace which is very large and overlooks the splendid Umbrian countryside with mountain views in the background. The views are truly among the best you will ever experience, breath taking. The second upstairs master is really a suite with doors that lead into a separate dressing area, bathroom with tub and very spacious bedroom, in this bedroom we have now also added air conditioning for those guests who suffer more from the heat (the air-con. is paid for separately so that if you do not use it you do not pay for it)
We, the owners, used to live in a separate building situated behind the rental when our children were younger. Presently our home is empty and is never rented out to guests. Villa Quercia is a private villa for you and your guests only.

You enter the property via a wonderful covered terrace which is very large and acts as an outdoor lounge area with sofa and comfortable seating providing the perfect spot to sit and relax during the day as it is covered and hence shaded or to take in the stunning views with a glass of wine or two in the evening or at any point of the day. There is always a little breeze here and provides the perfect spot as always cooler even during the hottest parts of the year.

From the terrace large doors lead into the lovely bright sitting room with internet TV, DVD player and DVD library and a wood burner for the cooler months of the year. The sitting room is in what used to be a tobacco tower and therefore has very high ceilings lending this space a very airy and bright feeling.

From the upstairs sitting room doors separate this part of the house and lead into the upstairs master bedrooms and bathrooms. One of the master bedrooms has its own private terrace from which to enjoy the amazing views and its own bathroom with shower. Another set of doors lead into the second master bedroom suite, comprising of dressing area, bathroom and very spacious bedroom.

From the upstairs sitting room steps lead down to the lower floor where you will find two further bedrooms each with two single beds (in both of the rooms the beds can be made into a double bed). These rooms have very large doors with lockable shutters. There are also two lovely bathrooms on this floor so that each bedroom has its own bathroom. The lower floor bedrooms are always especially cool as the lower part of the house has been built into the hill side.

Also situated on the lower floor is the modern kitchen with table and chairs seating 8 and a second smaller sitting area with sofa and armchairs. Doors lead outside onto a large area, terrace for outside dining with sunshade, barbecue and again with wonderful views over the surrounding countryside.

The property has been restored (former tobacco tower) to a high standard throughout. Originally an agricultural building, we have taken great care in restoring the villa to have all modern comforts and yet retaining the original feeling of the place. We have used local workmanship throughout using the traditional chestnut beams and tiled ceilings and the floors are all terracotta tiles which keep the floors nice and cool in the hot summer months. We have used good quality sanitary wear and tiles in all 4 bathrooms so that each bedroom has a lovely bathroom.

The property has a very large 16x6m saline pool (almost no chlorine) situated on a terrace one level below the house. We have now also added solar heating and thermal cover and thereby extending the season and taking the edge off once the nights start to be cooler in the shoulder months.

There are plenty of sunbeds for those of you who want to take in the sun, however, there is also plenty of natural shading provided by trees and shrubs for those of you who prefer to sit in the shade. On one side of the pool we have planted a row with lavender stretching the entire length of the pool and on the other sides of the pool are planted a variety of shrubs including rosemary, thyme and sage which guests are very welcome to pick and use in cooking. We have also planted a variety of roses to add some colour and there is a fig tree just outside of the kitchen area where you are welcome to pick the fruit when ripe.

The property is set in beautiful tranquil countryside however, should you wish to take a stroll into the village maybe for a glass of Prosecco or some ice cream then you can walk it in around 15mins.
The property is ideal for friends and families sharing also because of the layout as the two floors are very separate and hence should part of the family have young children, perhaps on the lower floor, they will not disturb those that may be resting on the upper floor. The villa is ideal for those that wish to spend time together, however, also have some privacy at times.
Villa Quercia is ideal for those wanting to relax by the pool as well as for those of you who want to take in the sights as within 30mins to 1 hr you can visit any number of wonderful places such as Cortona, Citta' di Castello, Montone, Gubbio, Assisi, Perugia, Arezzo and many more.
And should you wish to take a break from the pool and the views there is a ping pong table situated in the portico where you can play as often as you wish.
Last but not least for those of you who need to be able to check emails and perhaps do a bit of work there is WiFi connection at the property that we do not charge for separately.
And for those of you who wish to go walking, cycling, canoeing (very good club in Cita' di Castello), play some tennis, golfing, sailing on lake Trasimeno, cooking lessons or take in a winery tour and more all of this can be arranged in the area.
Villa Quercia provides the perfect location for a wonderful and very special holiday.

Swimming heaven

The house is spacious, beautifully modernised and with lovely views from its hillside location down a wooded valley to distant blue hills. The pool is remarkable, our expert swimmers loved how big it was, also that covering it when not in use meant it was not chilly, even in late May. Inside it was comfortable, with all the equipment you might need. Now to prove this review is genuine! The track from the road to the house is unmade, single track and steep in parts. This may worry unconfident drivers, we were fine. Also the written information in the house seems often out of date and needing a refresh, to bring it back to the very high standard of the house. The owner was lovely, all questions answered quickly via Whatsapp.

Good house in the country - but a little remote

First the good stuff - plenty of room with 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. The owners are tremendously responsive with helpful hints, resolutions to problems (there was a plumbing issue and a few mice), they even made haircut appointments for my husband and I - and they were wonderful haircuts!! It's also a central location to explore both Umbrian and Tuscan cities/towns, etc. We found a lot of things to do between the owner's handbook and our use of Internet services. And the pool is lovely - my husband used it for laps throughout our visit - only interrupted by flies diving in too. Gasoline and groceries were close by in Trestina. A couple of things we were unprepared for - the house is very much in the country - up an unpaved single lane road and a bit of a hillside climb. We thought we would be walking distance from the closest town (Petrelle), but it was a drive. Plus the bugs were so bad, you wouldn't want to walk the roads. We weren't prepared for the bugs - flies during all of August and September and mosquitoes during all of our 2 month visit. We went through almost two cans of bug spray. That somewhat limited our use of the outside, but no big deal. Finally - we loved getting to "somewhat" know Giovanna and her husband, as they were our onsite contacts. They don't know any English, but once we got used to Google Translate, we all got our issues across. She was wonderful and we really enjoyed the meals we purchased from her - lasagna and cannelloni.

Great home, lovely pool and well positioned for driving out to see Umbria's gems such as Assissi and Gubbio. Host, Christina was helpful and lovely as was Giovanna who cooked a great meal for us and came to clean whilst we were there.

Fabulous holiday in a delightfully spacious villa.

We made good use of the pool, which was extremely clean and refreshing. We visited 5 hilltop villages plus a couple of extras en route and found them stunning. This is a beautiful region of Italy and we would certainly love to return.

A beautiful location

This property is in a beautiful location with wonderful views from the property and terrace , making starlight dining a real treat!! It is in a very peaceful location but accessibility to shops and restaurants was easy. The swimming pool is exceptional, being large and well maintained. It is extremely well located on the Tuscany Umbria border with many beautiful towns, villages, monasteries and churches to visit . A great venue for a relaxing holiday.

Cocooning for a week

We rented this beautiful place for a week with friends, so there were 7 of us. Christina and Richard were delightful when they welcomed us on arrival. The house and garden look like in the photos. We loved the huge pool and the fact that there were enough lounge chairs for all of us and shade, too. The surroundings are very tranquil and quiet, and we loved that we could hike straight from the house. It was so beautiful to sit in one of several outdoor spaces to relax or to watch the incredible night sky. We would love to come back some day.

Very nice villa

We rented this home last May for 9 nights. The directions the owner had sent us, were very good and the villa was easy to find. We were looking very much forward to our stay however, the weather was for almost the entire stay, cold, windy and rainy. When we reached the house, the rooms were very cold, and we also found out quickly that neither the heat nor the hot water heater worked. However, with the help of the owner Christina and the, absolutely fabulous, caretaker Giovanna, this problem was solved fairly quickly. Due to the cold weather, we were very concerned about a high heating bill, and relied entirely on the wood stove. For that same reason, we chose not to use the back of the house nor the downstairs. The online pictures depict the house very well. The house was very clean and had all the basics. One thing I would like to point out is, that the kitchen is downstairs, something we did not expect and which wasn’t clear in the photos. Someone with mobility issues will find that very difficult to deal with. The house is perfect for two couples. Two big bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. Downstairs 2 more bedrooms also with en-suite bathrooms. I can only imagine how nice it could have been, if it would have been warm outside. The saltwater pool looked incredibly nice, but unfortunately it was too cold to use it. I gave the location 2 stars, because it takes one hour to drive to Assisi, 45 minutes to Cortona on a small mountain road. 1 hr30min to the wine country and almost 2 hours to Siena. Double those times for round-trip. We spend so much time on the road, that it cut seriously into our time to sightsee. Then again, if you just want to take a couple of sightseeing trips close by, and enjoy your time at the house, it is a great location. All in all, I would recommend this house however, if you want to sightsee, be aware of a long hours you will spend on the road. I truly wish somebody would have brought that up in prior reviews. A huge shout out to Giovanna. She is incredibly nice, helpful and extremely efficient. She made our stay as enjoyable as possible.

This is a great house

This is a great house, the layout of the villa flows very easily with outdoor sitting area leading into indoor sitting area and then more relaxing areas on the lower floor. Everything was very easy to use with no complicated frills, clean lines yet really comfortable and beautiful. The directions to the property were perfect and the caretakers of the villa were lovely with the owners also at hand if required. Getting up the first morning and sitting in the sunshine looking down the valley was just amazing, we have been to some stunning locations but the views are some of the best we have ever seen, moving form there was difficult. The house is close to a good but not busy road, then up a little back road, so not far but far enough for it to be quiet and peaceful. Perfect for relaxation but not so difficult to go and see the sights and easy to get to some really nice local restaurants. The pool is superb, like the house with simple clean lines but is very very large so you can really swim and the saline water was just lovely and the fact that it was heated was perfect as we came in mid September. Worked brilliantly for all of us and in fact it is one of the best houses we have ever been to and we will certainly be back!

Wonderful stay

We had a wonderful stay at Villa Quercia. The property is in a great position and has everything you need for a relaxed stay in the heart of Umbria but also close enough to nearby towns for cultural trips as well. In particular we loved Cortona which is only a short drive through the hills and Mortone was lovely too. We spent most of our time on the large shady and covered terrace which looks over the garden and pool and where the owners have placed sofas and comfy chairs, just perfect for any time of day and the views were just amazing plus the was a lovely cooling breeze as it is on a hillside. We ate most of our meals on the terrace just outside the kitchen, frequently bbq'ing and regularly went to the excellent but really cheap local restaurants. Michelin starred is available in Citta di Castello but we like local Umbrian fare. The kids and adults all adored the superb and huge pool and played lots of ping pong. We also enjoyed the board games and CD,s provided by Richard and Christina. The best thing though was the heated pool. We have stayed at other villas with pools outside the heat of summer and they have been cold but this one has solar heating and a proper cover so it was warm all the time. As there were eight of us we were worried about being on top of each other but there were lots of different areas to relax in. The kids had a different lounge so their PCs were all plugged into another area. We had a memorable stay and would recommend it to anyone. One of our best ever holidays and thanks!

Nice and cool, lovely villa, heaven

We had an excellent holiday. The villa was spacious, the bedrooms clean and bright, the rooms were cool even in 39C heat (Christina left good instructions how to use the shutters at night), the pool was amazing (actually more than amazing) and the local restaurants incredible value. Overall, 5 stars and we will be back. Thanks Christina for helping us really enjoy the villa and loation.

Beautiful location

We had a great time during our stay. The villa was a little out of the way but once found didn't present a problem. We may have given it 5 stars but unfortunately previous renters had left it a bit messy. Also the single beds were really children's beds and were uncomfortable for adults.

Holiday of a lifetimw

We had the holiday of a lifetime at the beautiful Villa Quercia. The setting is typically Umbrian/Tuscan and the property itself is lovely. It was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed. The heating on the pool meant that it was at a lovely temperature even early in the season before the sun really gets going. Trestina is the nearest town (10 min drive) and has all the necessary amenities with supermarkets etc. Cortona, Città di Castello and Umbertide are all 25 minutes away, very beautiful and with great restaurants, shops and evening entertainment and markets in the mornings. However, there are also closer restaurants with our favourite place only 5 minutes away in the next village. And we loved that we could by the odd item in the little shop in the village. Christina & Richard were fabulous hosts. They were on hand to offer valuable advice on everything from where to eat to the best places to shop (including the best markets to visit). We loved the fact that we could relax by the wonderful pool during the day and that there were so many lovely small to middle sized towns to visit near by. Fantastic!

Perfect for relaxing, swimming and sometimes work

We stayed in Villa Quercia May this year 2016 and just loved the whole experience. The pool was bliss, very large and even in May with the solar panels warm enough for us to be in, even with a couple of young children. We also loved the fact that each bedroom has its own bathroom. I was unfortunately having to do some work over the weeks holiday but the Wi-Fi was good enough for that and sitting on the fabulous covered terrace whilst working really made it that much easier to bear. On the whole a great location for relaxing, sightseeing eating out and even for working if you have to.

Spacious, airy, fab pool, ideal base to see Umbria

The villa suited us perfectly - ideal for large family groups. The pool is wonderful. You can play but you can exercise properly too. The location easy for day trips to Asissi, Perugia etc- lots of wonderful places to see within an hour and a half drive. We were there mid September and the temperatures perfect for us- certainly warm enough for swimming. For us flying in to Bologna and hiring a car from there worked well- we extended our week away with a night at each end in the city and it made a very nice balance. The house was very easy to be in, and the bedlinen really lovely. It is especially nice to have all the bathrooms of course, but also the various living areas. Wifi was ok to check emails etc but not consistent enough if you wanted to work or to skype. We had a wonderful week and would certainly recommend this villa as a base for exploring Umbria and parts of Tuscany. Cortona is a gem, and not far over in to Tuscany- less than an hour. Christina was a very helpful and flexible host.

Ridiculously lovely

We loved this property in particular the stunning pool, in fact the best pool we have ever had. No frills, just really big, in fact big enough that we had 8 adults and 1 child in with lilos all at the same time, brilliant! The property is great too, pretty and airy, lots of space and a bathroom for each of the bedrooms which was much appreciated with lots of young adults. We also loved the fact that although the villa is immersed in beautiful countryside with stunning views, it is up a relatively short white road (not hours of bumping around) and within 30 minutes you can be in a lot of lovely places. And the little shop in the village itself was great for bread in the morning and if we had forgotten something. We can highly recommend this villa!

well located, great neighborhood, what a pool

We chose this Villa because of the bright and airy rooms, the spaciousness of the property, the fantastic views and the great pool. We arrived and were pleasently surprised as the property was even better than we had anticipated. Having a bathroom (and a very nice one at that) per bedroom was a real treat and meant that no one was on top of one another. All the bedrooms were spacious and lovely. We loved the terracotta tiles everywhere keeping the house cool, the blend of traditional and modern worked really well. And the views are just amazing, we loved sitting on the covered terrace during the day time to play chess and in the evenings with a drink. The dining terrace was great too with a very large table, sunshade and barbecue and then from lunchtime on the table was in the shade. And the pool was the best we have ever had, really large so you can go for a proper swim, plenty of shade and sun and it being saline rather than chlorine was fantastic. We loved this property and will be back.

Great house in lovely countryside

A great family holiday in a spacious and very attractive house. Off the beaten track but within a short drive of several nice restaurants and not far from the famous sights of both Tuscany and Umbria. The pool is terrific and we particularly liked the fact that all bedrooms have en suite facilities. Christina was a very helpful owner.

Terrific villa and a great time

We loved this Villa. The perfect combination of everything we like. Good sized pretty and airy bedrooms, lovely bathrooms, one per room which was ideal with teen aged kids. Our bedroom had its own terrace with just the most amazing views - bliss. The pool was ideal, really large so that you can do actual lengths and saline so much nicer than chlorine. Immersed in superb countryside yet not too far away from the sights, we loved Cortona, Monte St. Maria Tiberina and many more. The local restaurants were lovely and very inexpensive. We had a brilliant time and would definitely consider coming again.

Bliss

Lovely late summer visit to Umbria and the lovely Villa Quercia. Out of season price was good but the quality of the villa inside and out really surprised us. We have been to a couple of places where the photos did not quite agree to the reality but this was not the case here. Blessed with some good weather we ate, touristed, slept and swam. Sitting on the covered terrace as the sun set was magical. Not complicated luxury but good, practical and sensible. We also saw wild boar and wild deer. Recommended for those who like a varied holiday.

Marvellous and special

Incredible valley views, lots going on in the valley with farming and Italian day to day life, 20 min walk to the local village and bars, magnificent pool (first time we have experienced a saline pool and it was brilliant), good nearby towns with cheap restaurants, easy drives to places like Perugia and Citta di Castello. Villa was spotless when we arrived and the girls loved the bathrooms. Early evening sitting on the covered terrace looking down the valley was our best memory of a wonderful holiday. Thanks so much Richard and Christina.

Host profile image
We came to live in Italy from the UK almost 14 years ago now, a move that was initially fueled by some health issues our son was experiencing We fell in love with and bought the property mainly due to its fabulous views with a vision of what it could become rather than what it was at the time following the theory that you can change pretty much most things except for the location of a property.
The property became a restoration project which involved the moving of volume, replacing of beams, floors, a total overhaul since it had in the past been an agricultural-tobacco tower, a project which at times caused great stress.
The area is truly breathtaking and is also called a "hidden gem" by those who know the area since it is one of the lesser known valleys of the Valtiberina running parallel to the better known Niccone and Morra valleys. The views in the morning in particular are breathtaking and those of you who don't know this part of Umbria will be amazed by its beauty and authenticity.

Why they chose this property

With superb, panoramic views, Villa Quercia provides the perfect balance between relaxation, peace and tranquility and seeing the sights in a most wonderful and yet very traditional setting. The ideal setting for your holiday yet within 30 minutes you can take in some of the bests sights of the area.

The property is situated on the border of Umbria and Tuscany and provides the perfect location for exploring both of these regions.
The pool is really amazing, very large 16m x 6m so you can do some real lengths and saline water is just so much nicer than chlorine and we have now also made it into a heated pool which will make it one of the best pools in the area, everyone loves it!

The layout of the property is ideal for friends and family wanting to spend time together yet at times be apart as there is enough space here to do this with 3 lounging areas not to mention the various terraces and the fact that each bedroom has its own private bathroom is just bliss. And not to forget there are some great family run restaurants only a short distance away several 5-10 minutes away. A great place from where to experience this wonderful part of Italy.

What makes this property unique

Above average sized 16m x 5m, saline (very small amount of chlorine) pool. Big enough for some real swimming as well as playing (we have also had guests play water polo in the pool as large enough). We have now also made this wonderful pool into a heated pool, heated with solar panels and thereby taking the "edge" off during the shoulder months and at times when the weather is not perfect.

Each bedroom has its own bathroom (4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms) and they are all of a good standard with lovely sanitary wear.

The property is large enough (very spacious) so that you may spend time together, however, with a downstairs lounge, an upstairs lounge, the covered terrace and outside seating on the lower level, there is plenty of space to also be apart when you want to be.

The layout of the villa is such that the upstairs bedrooms are very separate from the downstairs bedrooms, and hence is ideal also for families or friends who have slightly different timings, since occupants of the downstairs bedrooms will not disturb those upstairs.

Being situated on the Tuscan-Umbrian border Villa Quercia is ideal for visiting both of these wonderful parts of Italy. You can walk into Tuscany withing 15 minutes and hence this truly provides the perfect location for you to explore the Umbrian hill top towns and villages and at the same time take in some of the Tuscan gems such as Cortona (only 25 minutes drive away) and Arezzo.

The owners live close by and are at hand in case of any problems and advice. Should you wish to take cookery lessons, go on a winery tour, have a massage, play tennis, go horse-riding and much more we are able to help you with any of these.

Last but not least the unique covered terrace from which to enjoy truly wonderful views. The perfect place to avoid the sun during the day and to relax in the evenings with a glass of wine or two. Just heavenly!!

There is also free wifi throughout the villa
