At its best in sunshine and in showers, winter or summer, Hillcrest Cottage offers a warm and comfortable Cumbrian welcome come rain or shine. The cosy sitting room has a traditional polished green slate floor which benefits from underfloor heating and when things get chilly there’s a fine old cast iron range with an open fire to warm your cockles. For cooks there’s a fully equipped kitchen complete with gas oven, cooker hood, dishwasher and fridge for preparing hearty post-walk dinners. There’s plenty of cupboard space, somewhere to store and dry wet-weather gear and a small breakfast table. Upstairs you’ll find a generously proportioned bathroom with a quality four piece white suite, corner shower and oval bath. And at the end of the day climb into bed in Hillcrest’s only bedroom. The double bedroom has plenty of built in oak wardrobes, a valted beamed ceiling with inset lighting and a lovely view over the gardens and cottages of Ambleside. There is room for one car outside but it is on-road parking not private.

A great cottage in a superb location, the underfloor heating though fab for humans meant our retriever was looking round for cooler places to lie down. We would come back.
I’m certainly not knocking this beautiful little cottage, it has been great for the last week, there are pros and cons to it though!
Pros: location to ambleside town , pubs, restaurants and walks was fabulous.
Parking space outside the house, providing no one else has parked there!
Toiletries by all sinks, bath and shower.
Kitchen fully equipped.
A hairdryer.
Access to a washing machine.
Bathroom and bedroom were great sizes, huge bath, wonderful for relaxing.
Lots of local info about walks, taxis, takeaways etc.
And above all, it’s a very cute house.
Cons: there is no garden, it’s a small bit of decking that you have to walk to past two next door neighbours.
The sofa in the lounge is awful, big enough for two (just) but not for you to put your feet up, arm of sofa collapsed inside and springs sticking into your bottom.
Top racking of the dishwasher was broken, little postit left on notice board to tell us.
Front door is draughty, they could do with a big door curtain.
The road the house is on is quite a thoroughfare. Very noisy at all times of the day with people passing, you hear everything.
Only bath towels, I prefer bath sheets.
But we did have a great week in this house, but I would not book it again.
The property is perfectly positioned for everything in Ambleside! Shops, restaurants and awesome Lake District walks are on your doorstep. It it’s location you want then this place is perfect!
The house is very compact but works well for a couple. It could do with a refresh of some of the furniture (sofa mainly), but overall no complaints it was great value and perfect for our needs.

Charming cottage, excellent location
My husband and I spent 5 nights in Hillcrest Cottage. The kitchen was very conveniently set up and the lounge and bedroom were comfortable. Steve was responsive to the issue we had with washer. We recommend this cottage!

A lovely place, perfect for a couple .
The house had everything we could need. There were even maps & guide books, which we found useful when planning walks. Steve sent us comprehensive instructions on everything we needed to know & a number to contact if we had any problems, which we didn’t. Ambleside is a lovely place with lots of places to eat & easy access to the beautiful surrounding countryside. We would definitely book this lovely little place again.

Warm and cosy cottage.
Warm and cosy cottage, very comfortable bed, lovely bath but the shower (cubicle) was not so good, it ran either scolding hot or cold.

Excellent property in a fantastic location
The property is fantastic, situated a very brief walk from the centre of Ambleside but still quiet with the true Lake District feeling. All the facilities are brilliant and it was extremely comfortable. Can’t recommend enough for those looking for a cosy cottage in the Lakes

Absolute gem
This cottage is gorgeous! The bed is really comfortable and there is lots of bedding provided in case you feel cold. The bathroom is amazing - a powerful shower in a separate cubicle and a huge bath - lovely after a hard day's walking in the hills. The kitchen has everything you could possible need - really, everything! The sitting room has a small table and a really comfortable sofa and the wifi worked perfectly (not always the case in the Lakes). The best cottage we have stayed in - would love to return. Thank you to Steve :)

Perfect!
We found Hillcrest Cottage to be a cozy home away while we hiked the Lake District. Our host was very communicative and helpful. The cottage itself has many amenities including laundry, a soaking tub for weary hikers, a most comfortable bed, even a little dishwasher. It's within walking distance of everything you need and the Golden Rule pub is around the corner. We hope to be back again. There are so many more trails to hike! Thank you, Steve.

Fab, quaint cottage. Clean, comfortable and a great base for 4 days of walking.
Would recommend the cottage for a comfortable break for 2 people. AMBLESIDE is a great place to visit with lots of pubs, cafes and walks.

Very complete on a great location.
A nice cottage with a small sitting room, a very nice bathroom and a good bed. The kitchen is well-equipped, tv and wifi functionate without problems. It is one minute away from the wonderful center of Ambleside with all its shops, pubs and tearooms. There are also many hiking trails nearby. We rarely used our car after we arrived.

Fantastic cottage - hidden gem in Ambleside!
We stayed at Hillcrest Cottage over the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May,
The cottage was everything we needed - perfect location, wonderful cottage with great character.
We were very impressed with how clean the cottage is, as this is a holiday cottage where dogs are allowed.
Very generous bedroom with a good size bathroom, great shower and huge bath!
The cottage is situated at the top of the town, hidden away so you don't hear any noise from the busy town, a short wander to the Golden Rule pub, which has a great garden to sit in the sunshine - as it's hidden away it's never too busy like some of the places in the town.
it was a short walk in to the town, which was great for us!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
I would definitely recommend Hillcrest Cottage and will definitely love to visit again,

What a lovely place to stay
This is a lovely cottage. It is well equipped, cosy and warm. We would recommend it to anyone and would definitely return. A great central location for Ambleside. We didn't use the range as the place was so warm and toasty. Parking was not an issue. On the occasions we lost our space we parked around the corner which was no problem.

Fantastic!
Everything about this cottage is superb, the underfloor heating was lovely and I should imagine the range would be warm and cosy in the colder weather. All rooms were clean and we found a tea towel, dish cloth, small shampoo sachets and liquid hand soap all provided along with towels and linen. We will definitely return and it is just the kind of cottage we could happily live in. The kitchen was very well equipped and although I struggled with the cooker to start with, once I read the instructions it was actually quite easy and in fact cooks better than my own!! Although we could not let the dogs out in the garden off the lead as it is shared it did not make any difference really as it is so easy just to walk them around the block. A five minute walk takes you in to town with the shops, pubs and restaurants many of which are dog friendly. I would highly recommend this cottage and it is probably the best we have ever stayed in. Thank you so much Steve, can't wait to return.

I want this cottage for myself
I booked a last min break for my other half's birthday, (we have been going to Ambleside with our caravan for years) i saw the cottage and booked it for a change, I was so glad I did, we had a great time such a lovely little cottage, toasty warm and everything you need for your stay, just a short walk into town centre, I have a vivaro panel van and parking was not a issue (as someone else said there may be) very useful outside laundry of doing the washing and keeping the bike, the big bath is great after a long walk, a quirky listed cottage this is well worth a visit, but leave please a week for us to return.

Cute and cosy
Hillcrest is the cutest, cosiest place we've ever stayed in the Lake District. Minutes from the centre of Ambleside but peaceful as can be, it was more home-away-from-home than holiday cottage, complete with underfloor heating, a comfy bed and a glorious bath. We'll definitely be back.

Beautiful Cottage
Booked with owner - no fuss, easy payment procedures, regular email confirmations, good clear instructions for finding & occupying the cottage. 'On call' help details, if needed, once in the cottage (which we didn't, but reassuring).
We stayed at Hillcrest Cottage for just under a week at the beginning of June, just at the start of this last three weeks of settled hot weather. Sunny days meant we were able to take advantage of the beautiful terraced garden, which seems to have the sun all day. The cottage is really beautifully quaint, clean, very well equipped and tastefully decorated and furnished - we wanted for nothing. Parking outside was easy, we never had trouble with 'our' space, although the road up from the Main Street can be a little like a slalom sometimes, but really not a problem. The position of the cottage to the village is perfect - just down a small hill & you are there.
We visited The Apple Pie every morning for a hearty hill walkers breakfast, and to get our rolls for lunch (very reasonably priced) - we didn't try the cakes, but they looked delicious! We only tried three evening restaurants - Zeffirellis - lovely vegetarian meal (we hadn't realised it was vegetarian), Atelier - gorgeous meal of roast lamb but quite expensive and finally Jintana Thai - not so impressed.
We did some beautiful walks - Loughrigg Tarn and Elterwater from Silverthwaite carpark. Catbells at Derwent Water (stunning view). Styhead and Sprinkling Tarns from Seathwaite - so tranquil. Loughrigg fell - amazing view - feels like you are on top of the world. Around Grasmere Lake - finishing with the famous gingerbread! Aira Force waterfalls at Ullswater - making use of our one wet afternoon. Also a trip on the Coniston Gondola - very peaceful.
All in all a lovely restful (funny how walking up hills can be restful!) week. The only downside was that the weather was so lovely we didn't get a chance to light, and cosy up in front of, the beautiful range fire - maybe next time!
Thank you Steve.

Lovely quiet cottage
Lovely quaint cottage which is great location for touring the area. Car parking is not a problem as you can park just outside the cottage (could be a problem with a 4 wheel drive though due to width of lane) The lounge lets it down slightly but this is made up for by the furnishing and quality of bedroom and bathroom. Also the water temperature is a bit hit and miss. Overall we enjoyed our brief stay at this cottage. As it was summer didn't get to use the range but feel it would be cosy in the wintertime. Owner was friendly and sent lots of information about the area in advance.

Very cosy
Very cosy cottage set in a nice location close to town center. We enjoyed our stay here. There is a small terrace with table and chairs set in a communial area to the rear of the property. Not suitable for people with walking difficulties as there are many steps and a steep access lane from the town. Parking can be a problem at peak times. Overall we were very satisfied and hope to visit again.
