Csodás ház, csodás kilátással
Először jártam a környéken, nem tudtam mire számítsak, de ennél megfelelőbbet el sem tudok képzelni. A ház mindent tud, amire egy olyan csapat vágyik, akik kifejezetten kerülni szeretnék a túristaközpontokat. Kiválóan felszerelt, kényelmes, tágas. Mi nyolcan voltunk ott.

Blissful retreat
Spectacular setting for a complete break. Remote (as described!) with a good number of walks from the doorstep. The house has wonderful character, and a lot more space inside than the listing perhaps suggests. It's adjacent to a working farm, but if anything that was a reassurance given how remote the property is (and there was no noise or any other intrusion - you can't even see the farmyard from the property). Only advice - while the house is wonderfully well equipped (as you'd expect from a home!) take *everything* you'll need with you, as it's a long trip for supplies. I'm thinking things like cooking oil, fuel for the fire etc. If you're unsure if it's there, either assume not, or ask Candy - her communication was excellent throughout. If you want to unplug, this is the perfect place to do it.

Sojourn in West Lakeside District
We had a lovely time staying in this large and well-apportioned cottage. It is located on a rolling fell with only a few working farms within the close vicinity (closest town is a 10 minute drive away.) There is a spectacular view from the back yard and we spent many mornings and early evenings just watching sheep roam surrounded by distant mountains. There are quite a few great activities (including a not-to-be-missed trip to Wastwater Lake, one of the most beautiful views in all of England) Muncaster Castle and the seaside, within a half hour's drive, but many of the more popular sites (Windermere Lake, Derentwater, Beatrix Potter's Home, Wordsworth's Dove Cottage, etc.) are over an hour away -- at least for those unfamiliar with driving on local routes outside the highways. There are also some beautiful local hikes near the cottage. I would highly recommend this house for anyone looking for a quiet, bucolic setting who doesn't mind a bit of driving to reach many of the tourist sites. The house was very clean and well stocked with basics and there are some convenient options for groceries and other necessities. All in all, I highly recommend the cottage for those looking for a quiet and visually inspiring location.

Fantastic stay at High Ground Cottage
We loved this cottage! The views are absolutely amazing and I only gave good for the online marketing as I don't feel the online advertising does it justice. One of our party who is quite a critical person reckons it has the best views in the UK! The road up to the cottage is also very exciting as it is so narrow and isolated with sheep wandering about - it's great! The place is clean (apart from one or two spiders' webs!) and beautifully presented with lots of fantastic books to peruse. Our dogs loved the place and the garden is enclosed and we have retrievers so it was fine but if you have a small dog they may be able to get through the fence so beware as there are sheep everywhere but this really wasn't a problem as you just keep the dogs on leads. The walk to the waterfall is well worth doing, it's an amazing waterfall. There are lots of activities around and it is in a great position for Wastwater and other lakes. Would thoroughly recommend this cottage. There were a couple of bulbs not working but we didn't say anything as it really was not any problem as there were plenty of lights plus a dodgy kitchen chair. To be honest, it's so lovely, you could spend all week at the cottage and not need to go anywhere else, especially if you are an artist or photographer! We had both in our party. Thank you for a lovely stay!

Remote Heaven With Views To Die For
High Ground Cottage is a very well presented property with everything you need for a comfortable, cozy stay - - short or long. The kitchen is fully equipped, so if you cook, you’ll love it. Given the remote location (peace & quiet, ah!) you’re probably better off eating in, but there are various pubs, inns and restaurants not too far distant. The views out the back of the house are like a painting… ideal Cumbrian countryside, with nearby mountains, hills, trees, stone walls, green paddocks and sheep dotted everywhere. There are some great walks virtually just outside the front and back doors. Definitely recommend a walk to Devoke Water and an amble up a nearby hill for 360 degree views of the mountains and the sea. The house was perfectly clean and, should you need it, the heating system and insulation are wonderful (no cold draughts!). Really, everything you need for a great getaway… remote, peaceful, well set-up, spacious and the host was relaxed, easy to contact and support (not needed) readily available. What more could you want? Loved it!

Wonderful cottage in an isolated location
We spent a week here in May 2019 and had a wonderful week. The cottage is located on Ulpha Fell miles from the nearest village. The views are spectacular. The cottage is very well equipped. The wifi worked well, there is Sky TV, a dishwasher, capacious fridge, microwave, phone, washing machine, etc etc. Above all the kitchen is really well-stocked (unlike the vast majority of rental cottages). There were sufficient pots and pans for us to be able to cook every night without compromising on what dishes we needed to use. It even had a knife sharpener (my pet hate for rental properties is blunt knives). Communication with the owner, Candy, is good. In summary, the cottage is very well equipped in a beautiful location. 5 stars. (Weather 2 stars)

Magical !
We have just spent two weeks in what must be one of the loveliest cottages and venues in the Lake District. High Ground has everything you could possibly ask for in a holiday cottage spotlessly clean, warm comfortable and well equipped. The views from the cottage are truly magical and ever changing. We spent hours just sitting watching the sheep, lambs and the view. If you want true tranquillity and peace to recharge your batteries there can be nowhere better. There are also excellent walks from the door and in the surrounding area.Thank you Candy for letting us share your beautiful home.

Lovely Location, Beautiful Views
After driving on the windy Lake District roads to this location we stepped into this house and then on into the garden with beautiful views of Scafell Pike. We then took the short walk over to Devoke Water and were really impressed by the beauty and peacefulness of this location. It was fun to have the sheep wandering around outside and to really feel like we were away from the busyness of normal life. The cottage was a nice size with decent furnishings and worked well for the eight of us that stayed there. There is a lot to do in the area, which was really great. We had a wonderful time there but were very fortunate to have fantastic weather. Be prepared to drive on narrow roads for a while to get to the nearby attractions.

stunning holiday property
We have been to this house twice before and it was wonderful to revisit. There are many aspects that make this a perfect place to stay and "aspect" is the right word to use as the views from the garden, kitchen and sitting room are spectacular and ever changing. Watching sunrise and sun set over the crags was a daily "eyeball pleaser"! There were nine of us and two dogs in our two-family party, and there was plenty of space for all. Our days were spent waking, climbing and swimming in lakes. Evenings eating great food in many a good pub or family meals round the enormous kitchen table. Candy, the owner, was on hand before and after to answer/deal with my questions which always makes the experience welcoming. We will be back!

Peaceful and Away from it All
Lovely comfortable house with fantastic views. A real get away from it all holiday, with fantastic walks for the dog right on the doorstep. Slight problem with the water turning brown, but this was fixed really quickly - it would have been useful to have been provided with some bottled water to drink though! Had a lovely meal at the Bootle Inn. Ideal for a relaxing break

Absolute Perfection!
We were two couples looking for a peaceful, beautiful place to walk and relax. We could not have found a more perfect spot. The views are breathtaking from every window. ...even the wonderful photos could not capture the beauty of this bucolic location. From the door step you walk out and just sit and watch lambs frolicking or walk in any direction to tarns, to villages, to pubs... The cottage is lovely, very clean, with a well equipped large farmhouse kitchen, comfortable pretty furniture, with lots of space to allow different activities; one can watch movies in the evening and another read by a fire in a separate sitting room. Thank you Candy & family for sharing this wonderful cottage.

Absolutely wonderful
The cottage is beautiful. We came for my dad's 65th birthday treat and we couldn't have picked a better place to stay. We ranged in age from 65 - 5 and everyone had a great time. The views are breathtaking - and you get these from pretty much all the windows! Dad actually spent a whole afternoon in an armchair admiring the scenery. Your only neighbours are sheep and the odd rabbit so it's perfect for some peace and quiet. There's a binder filled with information on the area and recommendations of places to eat which was so helpful for settling in. It's lovely and clean and fantastically equipped! The cooker was a real treat to use. Candy was a great host she couldn't have been more accommodating and answered all our questions so quickly. We couldn't have asked for more.

Spacious cottage, with magnificent views.
High Ground is very good sized cottage with outstanding views, which you get from almost every window. This is a very quiet location but not so out the way you can't get to some of the more central areas of the Lake District. The open fire is a bonus and the owners very kindly organised for a delivery of logs. The house is homely with a good sized enclosed garden. The owners were very helpful and which made booking very simple. That you can bring a dog is a bonus.

A roomy property for a mixed age group from 6 months to over 60 + dog. The cottage had all the facilities we required as per the description. Close to Eskdale for walks, railway, Muncaster Castle, Wastwater and Hardknott roman fort. Best pub garden for kids - The Bower House Inn. Best food Hardknott cafe.

Great property, very comfortable with amazing view
Had a great family catch up in High Ground Cottage which was a very comfortable house for 10 adults and 3 dogs. Great space and amazing views where we sat around the kitchen table and log fires reminiscing, playing games and recovering from walking up Scafell Pike in the Snow. The house catered for all our needs in the sun, snow, wind and rain. We had a wonderful stay and didn't want to leave.

Perfect!!!
We chose High Ground Cottage because it not only looked lovely but was big enough to fit all of us in and would welcome the three dogs!! It turned out to be the best choice we could have made. Not only is the cottage as beautiful in reality as it is in the pictures it is cosy, comfortable, peaceful and boasts the most amazing views across the fells with only sheep and cows for company. The cottage comes with everything we needed including a wonderfully well stocked library and plenty of board games to suit all ages (in our case fro 7 to 65!). There are lovely walks right outside the cottage door and loads of things to do further afield including some lovely pubs with excellent food and the wonderful La'al Ratty steam train to take you all the way to the coast at Ravenglass. We had a wonderful week and will, hopefully, return to High Ground in the not too distant future. Thank you Candy for allowing us to rent your beautiful cottage

About the host

Hosted by Candy Goad

Host profile image
We're Candy and Andrew Goad - and we're lucky enough to live in the Lake District, waking up every day to the sight of mountains and rushing streams, and the sounds of skylarks and sheep. I worked in the creative industry in a previous existence, while Andrew loves doing up old houses and bringing them back to life. He's also an ace dry-stone waller! I manage the bookings and make sure everything is as gorgeous as it can be.

Why they chose this property

High Ground Cottage was love at first sight. We'd never seen anywhere like this - set amidst wild moorland and the glorious Western fells, with Britain's highest mountain, Scafell rising before your eyes.
It was owned by an artist before us, and is the perfect retreat for anyone with an artist's soul!
There's something magical about this place - we feel privileged to live here most of the year. But we're also delighted to enable others to stay here for the short window of opportunity over the summer, from the end of May to the end of September. NB We have now made High Ground available for the month of October in 2021 including the half term week.

What makes this property unique

Total peace, the essence of the Lake District all around you, no traffic (the cottage is on a dead-end farm track), skylarks, wild cloud formations and rainbows, hares nibbling on grass in the garden and herdwick sheep grazing in the fields in front of you - but also some wonderful things to see and do nearby. Although favourite Lake District attractions are within easy reach, this is an uncrowded and spectacularly beautiful part of the Lakes.
It's perfect for grown-ups who need to recharge their batteries and regain their zest for life - but also brilliant for kids who will have a great time on the little steam train to the coast nearby, the great beaches you can drive to, the owl sanctuary, Cumbria Heavy Horse rides, boat trips and much more.
