About this property

Beautiful Rural Retreat 20 minutes from Sea, near Padstow, Trevone & Port Isaac.

PLEASE NOTE: During high season summer weeks, we prefer our bookings to be Saturdays to Saturdays but are open to enquiries for other start times. During other times of the year we're happy to accommodate shorter letting periods.

Middle Treneague is an old stone house with a large, charming and rambling garden in a hamlet just outside the historic market town of Wadebridge (five minutes by car or 20 minutes on foot). While parts of the building date from the 17th century, it was extended in the 19th century to become a working farm until the 1950’s. Charming, comfortable and characterful, rather than a pristine modern house, Middle Treneague is surrounded by open farmland and oak woods. It is a peaceful, private and secluded place, lovely in all seasons. On wet Cornish days, (which sometimes occur even in summer) the gas fired central heating quickly warms up the house and the sitting room, with its powerful wood burning stove, becomes an especially cosy place to sit and read. The television is in a separate room.

Large rambling gardens surround the house, with terraces on different levels, designed by the writer who lived there in the 1960's. He planted yuccas, fig trees, old roses and lavender among the ruined walls. We have added a row of small birch trees with white trunks and a grapevine in the greenhouse.

There's a small barn (Owl House) in the grounds of the house - but the properties don't overlook each other. Bicycles can be hired nearby to explore the Camel Trail. The famous town of Padstow - with its many restaurants, and bustling harbour, is forty minutes away by bike, and twenty minutes by car. The sea can be reached in twenty minutes by car, on both sides of the Camel Estuary (For example New Polzeath for surfing, Trevone Bay and Daymer Bay.

Entering through a small hall you come into the dining room, looking onto the back garden from the oldest part of the house. It has beautiful old slate floors and is furnished with a painted french dresser, a Venetian mirror and a round antique wooden table seating six. A traditional, retro, farmhouse kitchen leads off this room, (new cooker fridge/freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, microwave) with long wooden table. There are two sitting rooms, the smaller of which, the ‘Monks’ Room’, doubles as a TV room, while the larger one, known as the ‘White Room’, has a wood burning stove, and large windows looking over the garden. The ground floor has beamed ceilings, slate floors, and lovely old pieces of furniture. Of the three double bedrooms upstairs, the first has a king size bed (zip and link), the second a 4’6” bed, and the third has two large gold cane work beds - 3’6”x 7’ each. There are two bathrooms: a downstairs wet room and an upstairs bathroom with view towards the garden.
This old and characterful house is stunningly beautiful on sunny days and in hot summer weather, but do bear in mind that it rains often in Cornwall and the weather can be damp and the skies grey. We have well serviced central heating to keep the house warm during those times.

Beautiful Cottage
We had the most fantastic stay, from speaking to Anne before we went, to leaving the cottage. A lovely quirky cottage, the sort of home we love to stay in. Peaceful and quiet, friendly neighbours (the farmer, his family and the cows), he gave us some great cycling routes. We enjoyed feeding and watching the many species of garden birds, from the kitchen window. There are no negatives with this property, other than we wished we’d booked for longer! Thank you, Anne and her family for letting us into your lovely home for a week!

Gorgeous quirky house
We had a lovely week, the house is so characterful and spacious and clearly loved as a family holiday home. Large gardens to explore and so quiet, yet only a few minutes from Wadebridge which is a lovely town, from there you can cycle the Camel trail. Beaches are a short drive away, and beautiful countryside is on your doorstep. Anne went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed. Thank you for a great stay!

Charming family holiday hideaway
A well loved, comfortable, family house. Enough room for 6 of us. Had everything we needed. Anne responded quickly to our queries. We enjoyed the blue and white china, and the vintage fabrics. We loved eating out in the wild garden with the cows in the field next door. Its not close to the beaches but has the advantage of being a very peaceful place.

Charming, Traditional and Tranquil
We recently had a fantastic stay at Middle Treneague. The house was very much a home from home with a wonderful atmosphere of warmth and comfort. I believe it has been used by the family as a holiday home for some years and the books, ornaments and sense that many happy holidays have been spent there only add to the charm and feeling of homeliness. The setting is also idyllic. Nestling in the fields, it also has fantastic gardens in which the children could lose themselves playing hide and seek. It really was such a tranquil location and we saw pheasants, partridges, rabbits, woodpeckers and bats during our stay! In terms of the location, the house is very well-positioned to visit many areas throughout north Cornwall such as Padstow, Port Isaac and Boscastle. All in all, I would definitely recommend Middle Treneague and would be more than happy to return again one day.

A beautiful and tranquil retreat.
We had the most wonderful stay at this magical cottage. Set in beautiful gardens, and a 15 minute walk to the pretty local town of Wadebridge, we couldn't have had a nicer time. We enjoyed the local food markets, pubs and cafes in Wadebridge as well as trips to Padstow, and Rock, and local beaches. We were a 20 minute drive from from Constantine Bay, our favourite beach. The cottage is very cosy, great central heating and a wood burning stove for when you come back from the beach. We loved the pretty pale blue kitchen, which was a pleasure to cook in and to gather round the table to eat. Also the sitting room, with comfy furniture and picture window onto the garden and woods below. We loved the art work on the walls. The bedrooms are very pretty and all have comfortable beds. We had a lovely relaxing stay and would definitely like to come back. We took our two children and a friend each and our dog, and we all absolutely loved it. We all felt that this cottage has a very special atmosphere.

A charming and beautiful rural house
We had the most wonderful stay at 'Middle Treneague'. The house is situated in a beautiful rural location, surrounded by a lovely garden and fields. Our two boys enjoyed watching and feeding the birds and we also heard the local owl residents! The house was warm and comfortable, the shower was great as was the bathroom. The beds were exceptionally comfy too.The kitchen was brilliantly well equipped, we enjoyed cooking on gas as we have a 'Rayburn' at home which isn't quite as instant! We enjoyed exploring the foothpaths around the house as well as venturing on the coastal paths at nearby Polzeath, Padstow and Rock. We would recommend this charming home to anyone wanting a tranquil break away. Many thanks Anne and family.

Lovely house in lovely setting
This is a lovely house situaued a short drive from the town. It has a rural outlook and was perfect for us with a family around us. the house is an old cornish farmhouse and has lovely slate floors which are a little uneven but in character for the house. It was clean and comfortable but not a pristine modern house which suited us very well indeed. All services were as advertised and the arrangements were flexible as we had to change dates a little. I would recommend this house as a comfortable base for a family holiday.

great family holiday
We have just come back from a really lovely stay at the Treanague cottage. We have been to Cornwall many times and stayed in different locations and types of property. We are two adults and my two daughters. What made the cottage so suitable for us was it is close to Wadebridge but on arrival is so secluded and quiet. On arrival it was very clean and welcoming, so many different views, a lot of history in the house and a real feeling of being away from it all. In particular, sitting in the cream lounge with the large picture window was lovely, and in the evenings we would sit together as a family without the TV (which is in the smaller room) which was very relaxing, when it was cold we had the log burner. One of the owners Anne was very helpful in describing the property and extremely friendly when I spoke with her. It was perfect for us as we bought our bikes and could ride down into Wadebridge which is fairly close in order to join the Camel Trail, however the hill back is a challenge; I took pleasure in overtaking my 10 year old nephew to get to the top as he pushed his bike up the hill. The beach is a drive away but I really enjoyed the peace and quiet and the fact that you really can hear the owls hooting at night! There are low door frames, my husband is 6ft 2 and we had to administer frozen peas to his bumped head twice! Overall we had a really memorable happy family holiday, I would recommend to friends. Thanks Anne we had a great time.

Hello,

PLEASE NOTE: We do SATURDAY to SATURDAY bookings only during the summer months, but we're open to enquiries about shorter lettings during other times.

We are three sisters who let our much loved family cottage in Cornwall now and then (it's a best kept secret). Middle Treneague has been in the family for many years, and has a personal quality untypical of many holiday cottages.

Why they chose this property

The nearby small town of Wadebridge is traditional and unspoilt, with many small and interesting local shops, a good cinema, several pubs and restaurants and the famous Camel trail for cycling to Padstow, which is bustling with eating and shopping opportunities, (Padstow is 20 minutes away by car from our house).
The countryside surrounding the house seems untouched by time - natural and not commercialized. However, the Eden project and Lost Gardens of Heligan are fairly close and the sea is twenty minutes away in each direction, either side of the Camel estuary.

What makes this property unique

Lovely old house, absolute peace and quiet, big garden, greater spotted woodpeckers, and the sound of owls at night. Wadebridge is a twenty minute walk away, but when you're at the cottage it feels as though you're in the middle of nowhere, and have gone back in time. We love the house ourselves and think we offer a highly competitive price. The most important thing for us is that people who stay at Middle Treneague will appreciate its special qualities as much as we do.
