We had a wonderful stay in this spacious, beautifully and thoughtfully appointed house outside St Ives. The location had an open, country feel while being a refreshing and easy walk or short drive into the historic and cultural centre of St Ives. Communication with the helpful, friendly and responsive host, Barbara, was excellent and we certainly look forward to our next stay there.
A beautiful slice of heaven. Barbara was so helpful, and we had a wonderful time.

Terrific Trowan
We were a long way from home and wanted to explore Cornwall for the first time and someone suggested St Ives. Thanks to Dr Google we stumbled upon Trowan and owner Barbara. What a find. The stone cottage is stunning - well appointed and everything you need. Its in a small hamlet called Trowan - a short drive and stunning cliff walk out of St Ives. We used the cottage as a base to explore the SW - Lands End, The Lizard, Penzance, up to Padstow and Port Issac. We were tourists but if you want to just have R&R Trowan works a treat as well. If you want to eat out highly recommend Tinners Arms in Zennor and on a nice day Porthgwidden Beach Cafe in St Ives. And you have to do the coast walk to St Ives or Zennor - a bit of a hike but well worth it. Enjoy - we should did. A real highlight of of our UK adventure.
The Cottage is in a secluded location alongside some other properties but has the best spot with the best views - sea, hills, fields and sunsets. The interior is contemporary comfort. Everything is good quality and very nicely chosen for a comfortable but contemporary feel. One end looks outside through French doors into a garden and Cornish nature and the other centres around a very cosy log burner . Perfect in all weathers . The kitchen is superbly equipped. St Ives is a 30-50 minute beautiful walk and you can walk for as long as you want in the other direction through pretty farmsteads or along the coast. We loved our time here.
We had wonderful weather all week in Cornwall and our stay could not have been better! A beautifully appointed home and Barbara was available to communicate with for anything we needed. We walked a lot and Trowan is the perfect location for either the Coastal Path and or the inland path which we took to Zennor. Particularly enjoyed The Gunnard's Head and Porthminster Kitchen for dinner.
We stayed here for 4 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The location (very near St. Ives but in an idyllic country setting) was perfect for exploring the southwest of England. Penzance, St. Just and Land’s End are easy drives and Mousehole was a very picturesque village. The Levant tin mine and steam engine tour was fascinating and is not to be missed.
The house was everything as described and more. The owner was easy to communicate with and could not have been more helpful.
As might be expected in February, the weather was a bit rainy so we didn’t get to do as much walking as we would have liked, but that didn’t keep us from having a great experience.
The owner, the house and the location are five stars all the way. We hope to return to Cornwall and stay here again someday.
The cottage couldn't have been more comfortable! It was also very well equipped and in a truly magnificent location. Our younger teen loved the raised platform bed, and we all slept extremely well all week. Barbara's advance information enabled us to plan our stay - catching the bus into the centre of St Ives, visiting the Tremenseere Sculpture park - highly recommended, even on a very misty day! - and enjoying a beautiful walk along the coastal path around Zennor. Thank you Barbara, we had a really lovely holiday.
A beautiful house situated just outside St. Ives with easy access to the coastal path and other walks. Barbara has provided everything for a relaxing stay. Very comfortable accommodation. Highly recommend.
A wonderful break, perfectly positioned for gorgeous coastal walks, beautiful beaches, pretty villages. The house is lovely and Barbara was on hand with any queries we had. Would highly recommend.
Tranquil location within walking distance of St Ives
This really is a splendid holiday location. The house is homely, set in farmland with its own garden. Sea and hill views, and paths from the house that take you to St Ives and the coastal path. We had a brilliant week in April and are likely to return! We visited the Geevor Tin mine which is excellent, and did lots of hiking. Also booked in for surf lessons with the St Ives Surf School, very friendly and encouraging. All in all, I highly recommend a stay at Haulfre, Trowan.
A lovely property situated in the hamlet of Trowan. Great communication from the owner/manager before, during and after the stay. Lovely house, tastefully furnished and well equipped. Everything worked as it should, and we had a lovely time. Highly recommended for anyone who is looking for somewhere to truly unwind.
Lovely house in a beautiful rural setting, close to the coast path with walks on the doorstep yet only a 5 min drive into St Ives. Good location to explore this part of Cornwall.
Fantastic week had by all. House was perfect in every way. Thankfull of washing machine due to a food mishap. Everything you could need was there in the house. Thanks.
A great location, especially for walkers. Comfortable well equipped accommodation with a garden and lovely views. Particularly cosy with the wood burner going on wet evenings
Myself and my family have absolutely loved staying at Halfre, Trowan Farm. Barbara was very helpful from the outset and gave us all the information we needed. The location is spectacular, within easy reach of St Ives and the coastal path with it's stunning scenery. The property itself was clean, tastefully decorated and full of character with a lovely garden overlooking fields. I can't recommend this place enough, we had great time and to top it off the weather was magnificent.
Great property and countryside location-, but within easy reach of St Ives itself
We had a great Oct half term week here. The location allowed for countryside walks from the doorstep into the nearby hills and to the coast. Property was also well equipped for all weather conditions.

About the host
Hosted by Barbara Schofield
My family love Cornwall in the far west of England -- a region noted for its wonderful beaches, dramatic cliff top walks and picturesque fishing villages. We have spent many happy holidays here. We acquired our property, Haulfre in Trowan Farm, after an exhaustive search and believe St Ives and the surrounding area is the very finest and most beautiful part of a very outstanding area. We are journalists and academics leading busy lives so we appreciate this haven of peace and beauty. We love it in all seasons. We have made the house more than the usual 'holiday house' - there are paintings, books, CDs and DVDs available for guests and try to create a special atmosphere of home from home.
Why they chose this property
St Ives is a picturesque fishing village in the far west of Cornwall, famous for its perfect beaches and artistic community. The St Ives school of painters were inspired by the natural beauty of the area and the quality of the light. St Ives has many fine restaurants and small boutiques and cafes and is home to the famous Tate St Ives with its contemporary art collections. There are five very lovely beaches one particularly good for surfing - all with beautiful fine sand. From our house you can walk to St Ives across fields and over cliff tops in about 25 minutes. This is an entirely car free route with spectacular views. Alternatively it takes 5 minutes to drive there. Further west is Lands End and a spectacular landscape of cliff views and hamlets with interesting churches.
What makes this property unique
An architect designed, detached, very private property with a pretty garden and lawns. It is surrounded by fields and looks out to sea. The sunsets are astonishing and the night sky full of stars. The house is furnished to a high standard with a large well equipped hand built kitchen. A wood burning stove adds a cosy feel to the dining room, and there is full central heating for visits out of season. The master bedroom is en suite and there is an additional bathroom. There is ample room to relax both inside the house on the patio. One well behaved dog is welcome. The hamlet of Trowan is car free, making it entirely safe for children. Haulfre offers a perfect holiday haven in five star comfort -- with easy access to the beaches, villages and landscape of western Cornwall.
