About this property

A beautiful family home with exceptional views to the Islands of Jura and Scarba

Yealand House is set into a hillside with breathtaking panoramic views out to the Sound of Jura, Gulf of Corryvreckan, Scarba and Mull. This beautifully designed split level detached family house, built in the 1980’s, is close to Crinan Basin where the Crinan Canal joins the sea.

Welcoming and comfortable, this much loved family home has a mix of antique and country-style modern furnishings creating a lovely relaxed atmosphere. The highlight is the spacious living room with it's double height ceiling, minstrels' gallery and stunning views to Jura and Scarba. Guests can relax in the comfortable three piece suite in front of a wood burning stove with access to doors that lead out onto a wonderful deck balcony where summertime drinks can be enjoyed while watching glorious sunsets and the gentle movement of the boats. For rainy days there is also a large television, DVD, radio, record player, library of books and games.

There are three bedrooms two are double bedrooms and one bedroom with twin beds. The main bedroom is an upper self-contained annex bedroom with en suit toilet and shower with views to the front and back of the house and its own living room. The second double bedroom has a viewing point out to the Islands and has an en suit toilet and basin. There is also a separate bathroom with toilet.

The kitchen is well equipped with a cooker, microwave, dishwasher, fridge, freezer, dining table and chairs. There is also an added utility room with washing machine and clothes dryer. The front porch can also be used as a breakfast room and guests can make the most of the morning sunshine.

For recreation guests can make use of the table tennis table and darts board in the double garage of the house.

Yealand House is situated above Crinan Basin and you can visit the Crinan Hotel for freshly caught seafood or lunch in the bar. There is also a coffee shop with fresh homemade cakes and a gallery of local artists work. Watch the yachts sail in out of the Atlantic, stroll along the shoreline or canal paths or take the path to Crinan wood (a remnant of Scotlands' own rainforest) and enjoy the panoramic views to the Isle of Jura, Mull, the river Add and Duntrune castle.

Great view
This property is a bit of a challenge to find but we enjoyed our stay. We appreciated the “welcome” gift of bread, butter, sausage, jam and milk. It was our “hub” and we ventured to many of the local restaurants, the locks, and enjoyed seeing the coos and sheep. We did not have hot water for two days and a toilet seat broke. Only one towel for each person and no extra toilet paper.

Fabulous quirky home in a fantastic location.
Clean, comfortable, warm and very well equipped property with the most amazing views from the lounge across to the Sound of Jura. Yealand House is ideally located for exploring the Crinan Canal, the amazing Kilmartin Glen, Knapdale Forest and Taynish Nature Reserve and beyond...if you can pull yourself away from the views! Very thoughtful 'welcome' items left in kitchen.

Good holiday at Crinan.
Comfortable house, with great views out to the islands. Very well equipped, and a plentiful supply of hot water. The door locks need a bit of lubrication as the keys were hard to turn, and one of the hall heaters flashed a light all through the night.

Beautiful location, view from house stunning and sunsets amazing. Only downside was having to lose a days holiday owing to the cleaners wanting more time. We wait all year for holidays and it's precious time to lose

Property is situated above Crinan harbour with great views out to the sea. This property is quite unique and has everything that you will need for a comfortable holiday. Watching the sunset from the balcony/deck is fasinating to observe. Great base to explore the beautiful area of Scotland.

Fantastic views in a great location
Spacious and well appointed. Good - views from the living room are amazing. This is a great room for hanging out, and has lots of comfortable seating - space, all rooms are a good size - well-equiped kitchen - the large porch is very handy for getting coats and boots on and off when you come and go - great location, there is so much to do in the area (canal walk, other walks from Crinan, prehistoric rock art, wildlife, historic gravestones, abandoned villages...) Not ideal - only shower is off one of the bedrooms (though a bath is available off the corridor) - fridge is quite small - difficult to find when we arrived, especially as it was dark. We went down more than one driveway thinking it was a lane. Directions to the cottage could be more detailed.

Lacking in professional approach to provision of rented holiday accommodation
Charming house, location, however, several aspects were not up to standard expected from holiday let. Description of property needs to be clearer. It noted that one of the bedrooms is unsuitable for young children. Reason is that there is a reasonable sized window which looks out in to the top of double ceiling height lounge which has curtains but no glass. Not sure that is safe for any age as well as having no sound privacy. Communal bathroom has window which looks in to bedroom. Had curtains and distorted glass but both rooms lacked privacy. Balustrade in hall overlooking double ceiling height lounge not suitable for children. Looks good to climb but if you fall over you could be badly injured. Garden path leading to shore is steep with mainly slippy muddy surfaces. Improvements needed for ease of use and comfort. Heating needs attention. Notes on electric heaters asking you not to interfere because they are set to come on at certain times. They weren't set. A few were on all the time but most were not on at all. There were storage heaters but these were switched off at the circuit box. On three occasions some of the electric circuits shut down and had to be reset in the circuit cupboard. Should not be happening. Longer cable needs to be used in the small lounge for the TV ariel. Can't have a cable stretching across a corner of a room where people stand and so taut it doesn't touch the floor. Could be argued that the decor and furnishings need upgrading and whilst not an issue for us, what was an issue was that there were too many personal possessions eg family photos, photos of family cats and children's certificates on kitchen door. I should note that despite the difficulties cleaning such a property for the caretaker, cleanliness was first class. Finally, there was no internet. Owner's response was that it is temperamental. Should be clear in property description. However, router was broken and despite best efforts of caretaker, no internet for 5 days. Serious problem as there was very limited mobile service. Despite being on holiday, 2 of us had to work, 1 had to communicate re house sale, 1 left early because he couldn't study. Wasted time driving to find signal. At the end of the holiday it would have been appreciated if the owner had acknowledged the difficulties caused by the lack of internet but there was nothing which I think reflects their attitude to offering a holiday let I'm afraid.

The house has lovely views and would be more stunning in the summer
Although the views were lovely the house itself needs a lot of work. Description on Vrbo was not correct, only one shower in the en-suite , only bath in the main bathroom. I’m still waiting on a reply from Vrbo!! Poor service on their part!! If you like living in the 70s then you’ll love this house.

About the host

Hosted by Richard Liley

Host profile image
The property is a family home owned by myself and I manage the letting of the property. My name is Richard Liley and I am an Artist and Tutor.

Why they chose this property

This is a family home that we had built in the 1980's. My mother's family originated from Largs on the Firth of Clyde and were great sailors. Many of them have ended up in Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. We love Crinan for the peace, the walks and the wildlife and regard it as a very special place.

What makes this property unique

The spacious rooms with stunning views. good parking facilities. Watching red squirrels, rare birds and deer that come into the garden.
Activities such as painting, swimming, sailing, walking, bird watching, cycling, picnicking. Direct access to the harbor through the garden.
