Beautifull! Facing directly on to the Torridge estuary with expansive views across to Instow
From the property you look directly across the estuary toward Instow - A glorious view to wake up to! The property is situated in the heart of Appledore and it has everything you need from lovely tea rooms, such as The Coffee Cabin, to excellent restaurants such as Bensons serving fish caught locally. Each morning we would walk out onto the quayside and stroll through the quaint and interesting lanes of Appledore.

Friendly people, ideal location for a family visit.
We’ve stayed before, which should give an idea of our feelings. The cottage is warm, comfortable, well equipped and has its own parking space.

Family stay
Excellent stay at this beautiful quayside cottage! Very clean and lots of up to date features. The location is amazing - we walked with our kids to westward Ho!, about 3 miles. Lovely walk along the cliff/beach/golf course. Easy 5 min car drive there as well. I have only good things to say about our stay, I would say that with 6 of us in the little courtyard garden it was very packed!! Nice to have an outside space to have a drink though. Fantastic overall!

Great Location
There is no doubt that the location of this property is stunning and we enjoyed the views over the estuary. We had some bad luck in that the boiler needed some attention and we were without hot water for 3 days (until we found out about the emersion heater), but that could have happened to anyone and the owners had the boiler repaired as soon as it was only possible. What let the cottage down for us was the general cleanliness (especially of the kitchen). We bought some Flash wipes and cleaned the kitchen work surface and the dirt left on the cloth told it's own story. We also had to buy some new cooking pans from the local supermarket because the pans provided should have been thrown away long ago (unless you like black bits from the pan bottom in your scrambled eggs!). Unfortunately, the beds were too ''bouncy'' and small for us so we slept in separate beds after the first sleepless night. I also need to mention that, on arrival, we opened the draws in the bedroom dressing table to put away our clothes and found - how shall I put it - a ladies pleasuring toy in the top drawer (presumable left by the previous guests)! We did in fact leave this ''toy'' in an envelope when we left to advise the cleaner to ensure that the drawers are checked between guests. We wondered if parking would be an issue, but it wasn't. For the first 4 nights we parked right in front of the cottage, and the next 2 nights close by in the car park as some inconsiderate person had parked in front of the garage (where a sign clearly requested access to the garage at all times), Luckily, the vehicle had moved on for our final night so we managed to park outside for loading up early on the morning of departure. This is a lovely property and with a few small changes I would definitely recommend a stay here.

Everything we could need or want.
Great location on the Quay. Fully equipped kitchen. Clean. Beds could do with new mattress as were a little lumpy, as was the sofa. All in all though a great cottage and would definitely return.

A little piece of heaven
I have given this 5 stars throughout as the house was beautiful, fully equipped kitchen, with a real "home from home" feeling. Clean and fresh with stunning views, with views so beautiful you just keeping looking. We had a wonderful time, relaxed and didn't want to leave. The house is situated right on the quay where there is a hive of activity from children crabbing, to people rowing, plus the ferry backwards and forwards and fishing boats and much more. Everything was easy the key release, communication with manager and I could not find fault anywhere. Its lovely and we will be trying our hardest to get back soon.

Home from home with idyllic views on to the quay and across the estuary
We had a wonderful week in Appledore. Halsbury has everything needed making it a real home from home. The children enjoyed every minute, as did the dog! Crabbing from the quay and surfing at Westward Ho! is highly recommended, as are the wonderful cafe's, restaurants and pubs. We'll certainly be back and perhaps for a winter, as well as summer holiday.

Our second year at Halsbury. A wonderful house in the middle of a pretty village overlooking the quay. The house is beautifully clean, comfortable and well equipped. The local bus service is fantastic and no need to take the car. Hope to return soon a fantastic location for a relaxed family holiday.

Perfect location
We were here for a week for the The Grand Tour mini event and this cottage was perfect for us. It's got everything you need, but also superb views and it was lovely to just to wander around Appledore. It was spotlessly clean, and the owner was so helpful. We hope to return next year!

Lovely waterfont location
We found Halsbury to be almost perfect for us to have a relaxing week away. The waterfront location was wonderful, Appledore had just enough going on for us, without being too busy. The house itself was well stocked with everything we could need ,we generally found the furnishings comfortable, and the whole house had a good standard of cleanliness.(the welcome note and wine was a lovely touch).....if we had one very small gripe, it would be that we didn't find the bed very comfortable, but we are poor sleepers, and the bed could be a problem personal to us!...elsewhere in Appledore, we enjoyed the ferry to Instowe, a meal at the Beaver Inn and the chip shop! We very much enjoyed The Champ for a drink in the evening, great live music...we would definitely recommend Halsbury, thank you.

Halsbury is a very good holiday cottage
We have stayed in Halsbury for a couple of years now we stay there twice a year and we have booked for next year. The cottage has one bedroom kitchen and dining room all on the ground upstairs is two very good bedrooms and a well maintained bathroom plus the best room of all in the lounge with views looking over the river and Instow on the other side of the river. The local area has shops pubs fish and chip shops a post office the bus stop is only a couple of minutes away that is why we leave our car in the garage at the cottage. The cottage is very well maintained and is always kept in a very good order and the house is always kept at very good standard of cleaning at all times. All in all I would rate the cottage at 10 out of 10.

Halsbury
Perfect rental property for us as all my family are into water sports especially kayaking and being able to store our kayaks in the garage was ideal. The house itself was very comfortable, clean and had everything we needed. Great view from the lounge across to Instow. We all felt very at home there and are hoping to stay again this year. We have holidayed in Appledore for the past 10 years and this property is one of our favourites. Easy for the local shops, local amenities and transport. The owner couldn't have been more helpful with any queries we may have had.

What a place
What can I say my family has been going to Appledore for nine years staying in other places but the last two years we have stayed in this property in March and October. The house has a garage if you have a car, we don't use the car as the bus stop is only a couple of minutes walk away. There is cafes ,pubs and food shops and a paper shop all within a couple of minutes walk away. The house has a lounge upstairs with a wonderful sea view also on this floor is two very good bedrooms one with a sea view and a bathroom. On the ground floor there is another double bedroom and a very well equipped kitchen. There is all you need in this house to have a wonderful holiday as I have already said we are going there twice again this year.

Wonderful Views!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this lovely house in Appledore. Communication was quick and efficient. We were on our way to a wedding in Devon on the Saturday and the house made a very attractive and comfortable stay for our family to get together. The house is welcoming with a card from the owners and a bottle of wine! Everywhere is clean and beautifully furnished and well equiped. Plenty of places to eat nearby when we wanted to go out. We had a one year old with us and there is a cot, high chair and stair gate available. We managed to briefly get on the beach but unfortunately it did rain quite a lot of the time, but that did not put us off and we would hope to go again.

About the host

Hosted by Mark Hedden

Host profile image
Halsbury has been in the Hedden family for four generations now and is used for our family holidays. We believe it is the ideal place to stay & enjoy the stunningly beautiful North Devon coast, whatever the time of year. In fact we have many people who return year after year.

Halsbury is situated on the Quay, with magnificent, uninterrupted views across the river from the upstairs living room. You'll never tire of watching the tide's ebb and flow & comings and goings on the water.

The house is superbly furnished & equipped with everything we think is needed for an easy self catering holiday. What's more, Halsbury is within a minute's walk of the shops, pubs and art galleries.

Halsbury is a wonderful house, full of history and ideal for all visitors.

Why they chose this property

Halsbury was originally bought by our great, great grandfather who ran a shop at the back of the house. Halsbury is now owned by my father, Mark who was born in Appledore.

The house is in a perfect location for many reasons. Being on The Quay, the views and outlook are stunning. Across the water is a lovely sandy beach - ideal for children.

A short walk along the quay, 'George Sands' is a great beach for dog walking at low tide. The 'Burrows' is another fantastic walking area, a short car ride away. Nearby Westward Ho! is superb for surfing, windsurfing and kite surfing. The world famous Croyde Bay is a 30min drive.

For wet weather days, try the swimming pool at Northam (a couple of miles away) or try Atlantic Village with it's outlet shops and indoor & outdoor play areas for the kids.

What makes this property unique

The position of Halsbury couldn't be better. It is right at the heart of the action in Appledore.

The ferry across the river to the lovely sandy beach of Instow is just along the Quay.

There are pubs, restaurants, cafes and numerous art galleries within very easy walking distance.

The narrow roads behind the Quay (mostly inaccessible by car & hence almost always traffic free and child friendly) offer you a chance to discover some the very old history of Appledore and pop into a range of shops.

Take a walk over to West Appledore via Irsha Street to see the charming ex-fisherman's cottages. Stop at the Seagate or The Beaver which both offer a good range of meals whilst taking in the views across the water. Both pubs welcome dogs.

Westward Ho! just down the road has great surf and is also suitable for children.
