About this property

4 Star Cottage With Games Room, In Lovely Scenery Near Bassenthwaite

Emerald Bank Cottage is situated in the most spectacular northern part of the Lake District. It looks like a traditional lakeland cottage but has every modern appliance including an electric car charging point and superfast fibre broadband.

It has everything you’ll need for a walking or family holiday in the Lake District - including, maps, walking books, boot racks, dog basket/bowls and a games room with table football and air hockey.

The cottage is situated in Uldale, a small rural village in the Lake District National Park between Bassenthwaite Lake and Caldbeck. The village has a tea room, tennis court and playground.

This part of Cumbria is beautiful and quiet, excellent for walking away from the crowds. There are walks straight from the door, with sightings of birds of prey and red squirrels commonplace. The lakes of Bassenthwaite, Buttermere, Crummock, Derwent, Ullswater, Loweswater, Ennerdale are a short drive away.

Keswick or Cockermouth are 15 mins away.

Friends get together
Great base for an active outdoor holiday, close enough to the main areas of Lake District and far enough out for some peace and quiet. Originally booked for 6 but only 4 of us managed to make the trip, but there is ample room and the property is comfortable. It was an ideal base for us.

Fantastic stay!
A lovely home, set in an idyllic village in Northern Lakes, with a wonderful views of Skiddaw from just round the corner! A great, spacious and perfectly laid out property for our two families. The Games Room was a particular hit! We enjoyed a lovely log fire in the evenings after a day out walking. Wonderful walks from the doorstep and a short drive to Keswick. A wonderful stay and excellent hosts too, We highly recommend!

Lovely stay
We had a lovely week at the cottage and there was plenty of room for six of us, including two teenagers. The location is rural and I'd planned some activities in advance, to lure our teenagers outside. They particularly enjoyed paddle boarding and kayaking at Derwentwater. The location suited us as we wanted somewhere quiet to go with grandparents. The cottage has a field with cows opposite, which regularly walked backwards and forwards on the road outside, to a farm. We ate out a few times at the Snooty Fox pub in the village and also the Oddfellows pub in Calbeck. The cottage is ideally situated for rural walks and bike rides, you just have to expect some mud! We rode to Whinlatter and up Honister pass from there, as well as doing some local walks. Thanks for a good stay!

A lovely stay in a great cottage
The cottage is lovely and cosy, and a great location to explore the northern lakes - close enough to Keswick to pop in for shopping and sightseeing, but far enough away to feel quiet and relaxed during half term. The enclosed patio at the rear of the property was lovely for evening sun, and a nice safe place for the children to play. Communication was great, the owner checked in with us on our first day to see if we had all we needed which was very much appreciated. We would absolutely recommend this cottage to others, we will certainly look to visit again!

Perfectly situated for a quiet break in the North Lakes
This is a neat and deceptively spacious home away from home in a quiet and friendly village. A short trip to Keswick, Buttermere etc., and some good walks from the doorstep. Comfortable and well appointed cottage. We had to leave in the middle of our planned stay because of the Covid lockdown. Kay was very generous and accommodating!

Christmas at Emerald Bank Cottage Uldale.
Stunning, Thank you for facilitating the best Christmas ever. Five adults four children and one dog, wanted for nothing. En route we worried "was there going to be enough bedding, towels etc" no problem, everything was so well catered for. Even cooking Christmas dinner, everything we needed was at hand. The location was simply stunning, an area of the Lakes new to us all. So very excited to explore the fells, but the real joy was coming home to a real cosy fire, hot bath and home cooked food. We will be booking to stay here again, one week just wasn't enough. Thanks again, and please send our thanks to the owners.

A fabulous location in the North Lake District
This is a great family property, everything is thought of to make your holiday in the lakes really easy. Bedding, towels, welcome kit, and maps and really well furnished house. This is our second visit and we will be returning just because we love the location and the care the owners have taken with ensuring your stay is problem free. We love the village with lots of character and everyone is so friendly our dog was transfixed by the cows that walked past the house each morning. We highly recommend Emily's Black Lion (fabulous pub / beer and excellent value for money food) in nearby Ireby.

BEAUTIFUL CLEAN AND TIDY COTTAGE FOR A THREE NIGHT FAMILY STAY. THE WEATHER WAS AMAZING. WE CLIMBED HELVELLYN IN THE BEST WEATHER FROM ULSTER STARTING THE DAY OFF AT 28 DEGREED C FINISHING OFF AT THE TOP IN ICE AND SNOW. AMAZING VIEWS OVER MOST OF THE LAKES. WE WALKED AROUND SOME OF ULSTER AND CAME BACK BY THE STEAMER. WE SPENT TIME IN KESWICK WALKING BY DERWENTWATER. RECOMMEND THE VISITOR CENTRE ON THE BORROWDALE SIDE OF KEWSICK FOR A SPOT OF LUNCH.

Uldale retreat
Six of us (family) and small dog stayed in this beautiful home from home accommodation for three nights. We had the most amazing weather for middle of April. There was everything a family needed and everything for dog including a basket, bowls etc. A lot of thought has gone into this beautiful home. We were made to feel most welcome. We had extra family join us for a day and I was able to cater for them with the ample pots etc. The games room was a hit with the kids and their Dad!. Well thought out for all members to enjoy. Thank you.

Emerald Bank Cottage was a wonderful place to stay. Everything you need is provided. The location is brilliant..a traditional, working Cumbrian village and so close to numerous places to see, walk, visit, eat etc. No hesitation in recommending this cottage.

Excellent property really clean and good facilities.
I annually organise a winter walking trip to the lakes and have never explored this area before, excellent walking around Knott and skiddaw via ullock pike. The property was a excellent base with good facilities. The snooty Fox pub was really friendly and served a good pint after a day in the fells.

Great cottage and fantastic location 😃
Cottage has everything you need and is very comfortable - the village of Uldale is excellent, local people are very friendly and the local pub is very handy and also the tearoom next door is excellent where you can get great food and drink. We all enjoyed it very much and have hesitation in saying " we will be back".

High Standard of accomadation
Really enjoyed our stay at Emerald bank cottage. The property was very well maintained and had all the facilities we required for our stay. There was lots of useful information about walks and local attractions which just added to the enjoyment. Location was lovely and quiet with an excellent pub in the village. The farmers arguing about who should should a gate just added to the fun. I would recommend this property.

Lovely cottage in gorgeous area
Emerald Bank Cottage is a lovely cottage, spotlessly clean and very well equipped and in a pretty village, Uldale. We spent a wonderful weekend (3 couples) exploring the Northern Fells, a really beautiful part of the Lake District and so much quieter than the central area. The cottage had everything we needed for a great weekend. Kay, the owner ensured we had all the information etc we needed. There is a good pub in the village too, serving excellent food. We loved the cottage and the area so much we will be returning and can recommend to anyone who wants a comfortable cottage in this super part of Cumbria.

About the host

Hosted by Kay Wesley

Host profile image
We are Kay and Mike Wesley. We live in Cheshire and we have five children and a dog. We all love the great outdoors, walking, picnicking and just messing about in the countryside. We like the Highlands of Scotland and the Lake District best. We have been to the cottage lots and it is a really lovely place to just hang out, somehow seems really easy to be there and everyone is always in a good mood. Several family members have also been with gangs of friends too, which is great, and lots of friends' families have stayed. Everyone loves it and wants to come back again. So do we!

Why they chose this property

We chose Emerald Bank Cottage because it is in our favourite part of the Lakes 'where the crowds don't go' and the scenery here is breathtaking, without any litter, noise or traffic. The northern Lakes are just fabulous. I think our favourite is possibly Loweswater, which hardly anyone visits, but is just lovely and a nice 5 miles round to walk with woodland and fell included in the walk. Follow it up with Steak and Ale Pie at the Kirkstile Inn and their own brewed beer. Lovely Buttermere is beautiful with a flat 4-mile walk round and also with a couple of good pubs for lunch at one end. Crummock Water is also fantastic and very quiet, with a lovely walk through the woods at the north end.

What makes this property unique

We've tried to think of everything we have ever wanted on all the many self-catering holidays we have been on. People remark on how well-equipped it is, from plenty of wine glasses to the iPod dock. And everyone loves the games room for evening competitions! We know how annoying it is when there is nowhere to hang your wet cagoule so we had the utility room extended to include a drying area with hooks above a big radiator, and boot racks too. We included a dog basket and dog bowls, and even bird feeders in the garden. We've added a hose in the side yard to wash your muddy boots and dog. We've included Ordinance Survey Maps of the whole Lake District as well as a number of good walking books.

Our approach has worked, everyone loves staying here as much as we do - hope you do, too!
