Roomy and quaint family home
Easy to find in a fantastic location near the town of Wick, this large home is a great place to stay. It's layout is quite quaint, with a downstairs bathroom only (if you have young children this might prove difficult as the bedrooms are upstairs. If you have mobility issues, the bathroom and kitchen are down a few stairs from the living areas.) The house is attached to the local primary school and right next door to a well stocked local store. The main bedroom is huge with plenty of storage space. There are two other bedrooms, one with twin beds and one with a single bed. We had a very comfortable stay!

Annual visit 2023
This was the 7th or 8th time that 4 of us have stayed here for a fishing holiday. Its ideally situated for access to the River Wick. There's a small shop for basics next door and a hotel serving great food about 150 yards away plus a regular bus service into Wick and Thurso. Booking in couldn't be easier (keys left on Kitchen table).

Watten lads
House did a job, not really suitable for 6 adults when there’s only one shower. Only 5 chairs in kitchen. Beds a bit uncomfortable. On the positive, good location for fishing watten.

The house has lots of book and video for everyone
A wee break away to rest and chill with the family in a quaint warm cosy cottage but a little spooky, where time stood still, you could sit at the fireplace with a mug of cocoa and just watch the world go by.

Looks are very much deceiving.
On arrival the house looked tired. The windows, doors and conservatory were covered in dirt/ dust and loads of bird droppings . The inside didn't fair any better. Stale cigarette smoke throughout the house. Worn and filthy towels left out on the beds, one of which was an x nhs threadbare towel. Pants and socks left in a drawer, a dirty cloth lying in a wardrobe with so called clean bed sheets and towels. Mousetrap in cupboard, which is fine but not the dead mouse that had clearly been there for sometime. The kitchen was quite frankly disgusting. Fridge, hob, microwave, washing machine, pots and pans, cutlery, table and floor all had to be cleaned by ourselves before we could use them. We decided to leave the oven as it was so bad. We also had to clean door handles but left mucky hand prints and dog paw marks on on the woodwork. Bought new towels, cups and glasses. Only cleaned enough plates and cutlery for our own use. Contacted the owner on the day we arrived. Sent him pictures of the mess and have heard nothing from him since. If it wasn't for the fact we had come so far ( 260 miles), we would have just left. This was a 50th anniversary for my girlfriend's parents and we had all been looking forward to it for many months just to be completely wasted all in a few minutes. No one should start a holiday spending three to four hours cleaning a property that they have paid to stay in and considering we are in a national pandemic, this was totally unacceptable and inexcusable. Photographs are available upon request. Thanks Rob.

Lovely spacious, homely and cosy! Felt like home from home, well equipped kitchen! Comfy beds!
Very easy and straight forward! We needed to change the week of our stay at very short notice, which the owner was fabulous with! Easy payment method, you get reminders if you haven’t paid in full which are great! The joining instruction very easy and simple. Luckily we didn’t need him but the caretaker is just a phone all away! Great for a medium size family! We stayed in autumn, would like to stay in the summer as I think the house would be completely different in the summer. Plenty to do in terms of book, games and tv choices. Would certainly recommend to people who looking to get away from the busyness of the city and enjoy what rural Scotland has to offer ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A lot of space and a house with character. Stuart was very helpful when we needed another bedding. The house was great for trips to Wick, John O'Groats, Dunnet Head, Dunrobin Castle and so on.

Home from home
Lovely quirky old house, still a family home so it is very relaxing and comfortable. It is very well equipped for the odd wet day, plenty of books, games, videos and of course the PlayStation. Hooks for wet coats inside the back door and a washer dryer too. Very well placed for Wick, Thurso and John O’Groats and a handy shop next door.

Beautiful central location very quaint house
Such a lovely house , everything you need. Books / dvds/ board games 3 tv's.across 3 rooms. Family of six and two dogs visiting. On main road BUT very little road noise. Shop next door very handy . Larder had the necessities left by previous guests and us, e.g salt , oil , fairy liquid soap powder etc. Washing machine great but programs seem very long ,combi dryer but not ideal , to be fare radiators were great and we were there for a week . Also some essentials in bathroom...we had forgotten loo roll .... Both toilets ( and shower/bath) on ground floor and both had wee steps to get to them , fine for us , but consider the less firm when making your choice. Truly felt at home , as many dishes , pots n oans etc as you may need. Would suggest consideration given to updating couches and matress in main bedroom , whilst functionable just not the comfiest, but again we were there for a week.. There is a gate to back garden if you choose to close it , but front garden is open . Plenty of dog walking on safe pavements and poo disposal bins readily available.. My children enchanted with several honesty boxes close by for fresh produce , jams ,eggs and even home made tablet. Decent swing park within very short distance from house , Location is IDEAL ten minutes from Wick, 20 mins to Thurso , 30 mins to John o Groats on decent but few single track roads which is no issue bit worth mentioning . Caretaker was located next door and introduced himself when we were unloading car . Very good value for money, the owner was very flexible re dates and check in / check out too. Had a great family holiday and if in same position would most definately return to Watten and the Old School House .

Cosy, homely house
We all had a wonderful stay, two adults and two dogs. The house was warm, cosy, comfy and clean and placed really well in terms of visiting all the places we wanted to go, quite central in the region. Pretty much everything you need for a self-catering stay. Would definitely come back.

Cosy home from home feel
This holiday home has a lovely atmosphere - cosy and friendly. It's in a good location with beautiful countryside nearby and handy for John O'Groats, Wick, Thurso etc. The shop next door is handy and helpful, wish we'd tried the local pub just up the road but we had a load of food to finish up! We would highly recommend this holiday home.

Lovely big house with character.
We stayed here for a week, and was really happy with everything! We had quite a late arrival, but that was no problem for the owners to organise that. The house was warm, with gas central heating, storage heaters and individual plug in heaters at our disposal. There was more rooms in the house than we could possibly use, but it was lovely to have some space! Despite it being next to and attached to a school, you don't even know the school is there! You don't hear a thing from the school. We had to check if the school was actually open! There is a lovely bar a stones throw down the road which serves decent meals., and literally next door on the other side is a convenience store for getting all your stuff. There is a nice lake to walk around a short walk from the house. But obviously because it is in a remote area, a car is absolutely essential to get around. Watten is in a great location half way between the two towns of Wick and Thurso. It is easy to get to a ferry to the Orkneys from here (tho i would recommend to stay in the orkneys for at least a night if you want to go there). Inverness is 2.5 hour drive from here. This really is a perfect "get away from it all" location. With miles and miles of unspoilt countryside beaches and old marinas around. The house is fully stocked with everything you would need: towels, bed linen, pots, pans, plates etc. The house is old and some of the appliances and furniture in the house is old too. But everything was fully working. The house has some amazing character and really feels like a home. If I return to the area I would definitely stay here again. Thank you so much to the owner for letting us stay and for organising access.

I am a 50s something guy living and working abroad.

I am loathed to give up this family home as we all use it thought the year so we decided to offer it as a rental to cover some of the costs of ownership.

We like the place and hope you will as well.

Stuart

Why they chose this property

The place is a family home so it has a very homely feel to it, not like the usual very sterile self catering places you will find else where. All the equipment is well maintained and replaced as needed.

What makes this property unique

Large book and film collections.

2m/70cm Dipole and IC271e, rig available on request.
