About this property

4 Star Cosy Cottage in Chapel Stile, Langdale Valley, Lake District, England

Nestled in the pretty Langdale hamlet of Chapel Stile, this 19th Century chic Lakeland retreat takes a picture-postcard setting overlooking the Langdale Valley. This sleepy village is an ideal base with its handy shop and excellent country pub yet an abundance of walks and mountain bike routes from its doorstep.

Step inside Fountain Cottage and you'll fall in love with the traditional character and instantly soak up the contemporary luxuries of a meticulous restoration contrasting the old oak beams, thick walls and stone floors with crisp modern decor.

Contemporary comforts spread over the three floors; sumptuous cottage bedrooms, sleek designer bathrooms and a top floor lounge with a woodburning stove and a furnished, south-facing balcony for lazy summer brunches or just a cool place to chill out after those hard days on the fells.

Lakeland slate on the outside and lovely mountain and village scenes through almost every window.

Active families will have no need to use their car, couples will relish the romantic location and cosy evenings by the woodburning stove and all will be glad of the short walk to the Good Pub Guide listed Wainwrights Inn.

Although this luxurious Lake District cottage is an outdoor lovers paradise, for those who want to just relax and be pampered the Cottage benefits from membership for two adults at the nearby Langdale Country Club. The Club offers a well equipped gym, swimming pool and sauna. Fountain Cottage guests are also able to sign in additional members of their party on the payment of a small day or evening charge. Children under the age of two benefit from free entry.

Come rain or shine whether you are looking for outdoor activity or a peaceful romantic retreat Fountain Cottage offers it all.

The large entrance hall with original flagged stone floor and space for outdoor gear leads upstairs to the excellently equipped Shaker kitchen / dining room which affords fabulous views over Lingmoor Fell. Through to the modern lounge with wood-burning stove and French doors leading out to the balcony again overlooking Lingmoor Fell.

The romantic double bedroom with a wrought iron bed is located on the entrance level and has its own en-suite with luxury power shower. Also on the entrance level is the luxury family bathroom which offers both a separate bath and power shower cubicle.

A flight of stairs leads down to the cosy twin bedroom which has its own outdoor access.

Outside there is a large shed for secure storage of bikes and outdoor equipment.

There is parking for 1 car directly outside the cottage with further on lane parking close by.

There is a wide selection of maps, books, guides and information on local activities for your use.

We also accept one small well behaved pet in the cottage.

Fabulous Place!
Just returned from a weekend at Fountain Cottage, what a fabulous place, spotlessly clean, exceptionally well furnished & equipped, full of character, great location for walking / cycling from the door, village pubs / restaurants and what is probably the finest Co-oP we have ever seen. We will be back for sure!

Warm, cosy, comfortable.
We barely used the car as there so many walks to do from the door. The cottage was a joy to return to after a day walking in the rain and wind. It was lovely and warm with a cosy wood burner. We had everything we needed . The shop in the village was very handy and sold a huge variety of things. The pub is very welcoming and serves good food. An excellent property, loved it .

Superb property and location
Fountain cottage was extremely well equipped with everything one would need - a home from home. The property was spotlessly clean and comfortable with ample room for 4 adults. Lots of beautiful walks from the doorstep and a good pub just a few minutes walk away. We especially enjoyed sitting on the balcony watching the sun go down. Would thoroughly recommend a stay here.

Superb Stay at Fountain Cottage
A fantastic cottage in a beautiful area. There was everything we needed in this super home. To top it all, it has lovely owners, who, obviously, care. We’ve already made a reservation for next year. A very BIG thank you.

A quiet and relaxing break
A fantastic cottage in one of our favourite parts of the Lake District. It had everything we needed and there was even a Christmas Tree in the living room which was a lovely touch. We had some great local walks and then could comfortably relax into the late afternoon and evening. Would definitely recommend. Thank you so much

great location for walking
Lovely cottage split over three floors. Fantastic views. Cottage has two bedrooms and all the equipment you would need for a great stay. There is a pub within walking distance that does lovely food. We found the co-op in the village to be a bit pricey.

This is the 3rd time we have stayed here which says a lot. A sparkling clean home from home which has everything you need for a very comfortable stay with the added bonus of membership at the local spa. Contains lots of information on local walks and pubs etc. We will be going again.

A little gem of a place to stay in the midst of an area where there is so much exploring to do.
This was a return visit- that has to say something. The cottage is home from home and immaculately clean and very comfortable. We had excellent weather to walk in and enjoyed using the spa. We will be booking again to explore more of that amazing area.

Lovely cottage, very well equipped. We had a very enjoyable week.
This cottage was an excellent choice. It was very well-equipped and had everything we needed for the the week. It has been maintained to a high standard and was a lovely place to relax and unwind. The location is excellent, being only a few minutes walk from the local shop and pub, and the river. We had our two year old with us and the cottage worked very well for the three of us. Would highly recommend.

Excellent location in quiet village, well equipped and comfortable cottage with character.
An excellent place to stay, with a number of lovely family walks accessible from the door, such as over to Grassmere (a steep but enjoyable clamber), and the Stickle Tarn Trail nearby. The Langdale Country Club membership was excellent and provided swimming in their well equipped spa pool as an activity for rainy days. Cottage was well equipped, with everything you could need in the kitchen, log burner in the living room, and clean and comfortable bathrooms and bedrooms. The village was quiet even in summer holidays, a contrast to Ambleside which although only a few miles away was terribly busy. The local Co-op has all the essentials, and the Wainwright Inn was a decent pub for a meal. Easy access to sites around the area, we had an easy trip to Beatrix Potter's house and Wray Castle, and to Windemere for kayaking another day. A great place to stay!

Great cottage
Lovely, clean, spacious cottage that was suitably equipped with everything we needed for our stay in the Lakes. It is situated in a great location for walks and is near to a great pub! However, we would have loved for there to have been a recycling bin next to the cottage, which would be more convenient than taking our rubbish home with us or taking it all to Ambleside. Apart from this, we could not fault this wonderful cottage. Thank you!

Myself and my wife and two children had a fantastic week at fountain cottage. It's a lovely cottage which we really enjoyed staying in, and it's in a brilliant location with plenty to do on the doorstep or within a short drive. Highly recommended.

Excellent accommodation, excellent location
The cottage was very comfortable all the essentials: dishwasher, washing machine and Wifi. I'm not sure the tumble drier programme of the washing machine was working but the cottage was so warm, clothes dried well on the clothes horse. In fact we needed to turn the heating down. On arrival there was milk, tea, coffee, a packet of biscuits. Washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, washing tablets, towels and tea towels were provided. Details of walks, places to visit and local information all present in the cottage. The Leisure facilities at the Langdale were also top class. Take your own towels or pay £2 each for weekly hire. We only made it once so lost out there. We didn't use the car as we were able to do many walks straight from the cottage. Particularly nice walks were to Grasmere and Ambleside, a different way back each time. What we found very useful was the ability to download the local ordinance survey map onto an iPhones. The village store was very well equipped, everything you could need for the week, but understandably more expensive than a larger supermarket chain. All the cafes and pubs we tried were dog friendly as were the local buses. Both the pub at Elterwater and Chapel Stile itself served decent food. We're a family of 4, children aged 15 and 11 plus a Labrador. He seemed to enjoy the holiday too. We would definitely return to is cottage and would consider buying it if it became available!

Indian summer at Chapel Stile
We spent last week at Fountain Cottage and what a perfect week it was! The cottage is all we could have wished for and more, cosy, warm, and clean with stunning views and surroundings. We love the balcony, and it was used frequently to view the sky at night with our newly acquired telescope. The weather was lovely and warm with only a couple of showers, and even then sun always followed. The local sheep wander around the village and seemed to like the grass outside the kitchen window at the church gate. The co op is just down the road, and very well stocked. We walked along the riverside to the Brittania Inn and Maple cafe, about 15 minutes away but took longer as we were taking photos and sitting by the water enjoying the experience. We ate at the Wainwright's Inn mostly as only 5 minutes walk and very good food, ale, and roaring fire. It gets busy on weekend evenings but we could always find a table and didn't have to wait long for our meals. We had a meal one evening at Stove on the Langdale estate and what absolutely beautiful surroundings there, highly recommended! Don't forget to take a torch with you to light the way along the dark road if you walk down. We visited Ambleside and had lunch at The Fulling Mill which was lovely. We had coffee and cake at The Bluebird cafe on the lakeside at Coniston. We went to Kendal, Ullswater, Windermere, in fact where didn't we go! Belinda and Simon have supplied all the information you could need in the cottage, along with many books, games, even binoculars. and a torch (see above). Oh and not forgetting the cookies, tea, and coffee left for us. Thank you! Highly recommend this perfectly located cottage and would love to visit again.

Lovely stay at Fountain Cottage, Chapel Stile ,The Lake District
We had a lovely stay at Fountain Cottage , and felt our hosts looked after us very well from beginning to end, even to leaving some tasty scones to enjoy when we arrived . There was lots of information to look at in the cottage , like suggested walks from the doorstep, and recommended places to eat . We had a couple of wet days ( to say the least !) so we made good use of the spa passes which were kindly left for us to use. The cottage was quirky in that it is on different levels, which added to the character . It was lovely to sit out on the balcony in the evening and watch the sun go down . The property was very clean and well maintained , and equiped with just about everything you could possible need.So a big thanks to ours hosts .

Simon and I live in the Lake District. Simon is retired and I have my own Chiropractic clinic. We are passionate about the outdoors and spend all of our free time walking, mountaineering, mountain biking and running. Before living here we come to the Lakes for many years and fell in love with the beauty and solitude the Langdale valley offers in all seasons.

Why they chose this property

The Langdale Valley has something for everyone with gentle river walks to delightful cafe's and pubs to the big summits of Bowfell, Crinckle Crags and Scafell Pike all accessible from the front door of Fountain. You can escape the crowds and have the fells to yourself or if you are looking for restaurants, cinemas and shops, Ambleside is only 15 minutes by car. Chapel Stile is a buzzing little hamlet with it's village school, well stocked co op shop and great local pub "Wainwright's Inn". Fountain Cottage is a real gem and a relaxing haven for all.

What makes this property unique

Fountain Cottage benefits from free membership for two adults to the Langdale Country Club, which is located a short walk away. The membership includes a 10% discount off meals in the restaurant and the locally owned "Wainwright's Inn". There is high speed broadband and wifi available in the cottage. We provide an extensive selection of maps, route suggestions and guide books for your use during your stay.
