About this property

Unique Historic Secluded Farmhouse With Private Pool And Spectacular Views

El Cortijo de Los Siete Olivos. A unique 150 year old farmhouse, restored to retain its original character, with beautiful panoramic views over olive groves and across the valley to the Parapanda mountain. The whitewashed house with low-beamed ceilings, nestles on a hillside under dark holm oak trees. Although fully modernised it avoids the sterility that can characterise recently renovated buildings, it has a warm ambiance in which old -style interior fittings seem to merge organically with the walls and floor in traditional Andalucian fashion. The accommodation consists of the farmhouse and a little adjoining house, each with its own secluded terrace. There is a charming pool set in natural stone, and a 'wild' garden with pomegranate, almond and olive trees. The small town of Montefrio is only 5 min drive from the house where you can find all you need for your stay, and the magnificent city of Granada only 45km away.

Perfectly authentic country experience
This house ticks all the boxes for those wanting to live life away from it all in a comfortably provided for yet truly rustic home. Margaret could not have been more attentive and made our stay so easy and memorable. The area is full of rich visual and cultural experiences. A holiday of a lifetime.

Gorgeous views
We had a lovely (and hot!) two weeks at the farmhouse. The property is old and rustic but clean and the view from the terrace is breathtaking! The pool was a welcome relief from the boiling heat and Gerardo did a great job keeping it clean over the two weeks. Would highly recommend a stay here especially if you want to chill out and relax. The only (very minor!) downside was the distance from the nearest town as it meant a car ride to go out for dinner or do a food shop. However the owner did make me aware of this when I queried during the booking process and to be honest you wouldn’t get the amazing views if located in the centre of a town. Highly recommend!

Fabulous family holiday in a rustic farmhouse.
Just returned from 2 weeks in this fabulous property, it was everything we wanted and more! Rustic and rural with a fabulous terrace...the views are wonderful and the pool is great for a cooling dip. The weather was hot and sunny and we ate all of our meals outside. The kitchen is incredibly well equipped and had everything we could possibly need. There's lots of information in the house about exploring the local area which we found very useful. Numerous walks start from the house if you don't want to drive. Would highly recommend this property if you like relaxed and rustic with a great location.

Very good house and location - we can recommend it.
We were in the house for three weeks and we liked it very much. The kitchen was very well equipped, there are enough towels available and Gerado, the caretaker, is always immediately accessible. The house lies wonderfully in the mountains, so that we could sleep well at night (not too hot). The pool was very pleasant and was also regularly cleaned. We liked the location of the house (single location) very much. Although there are two neighbouring houses, they were usually uninhabited. The garden does not allow any outside views. Montefrio is a very nice village with a good infrastructure and nice bars. We will come again!!

Rustic Charm
We spent two weeks here in the hot sun of July. The pool was well used to cool us down. The place is idyllic and the owner has thought of everything in the kitchen. The views are wonderful and the town and area are unspoilt by tourism. The sunbeds had seen better days and the beds were lumpy (we got used to them) but if you can live with that the Cortijo is full of charm, very rustic and the history of the building and it’s owners/occupiers is very interesting. The owner, Margaret, was extremely helpful and understanding. We all fell in love with El Cortijo de los Siete Olivos. We visited the Dolmans in an area run by a crazy lady, passionate about their safe-keeping. The Alhambra palace is also a must see.

Our best villa ever!!!
We absolutely loved our stay in this beautiful villa. I am always looking for a place like this to stay and they are so rare to find. Romantic authentic rustic and beautiful. The views and location are stunning. The pool was big and provided hours of entertainment. the separate casita was brilliant for hosting friends and mother. Montefrio is a beautiful walk away and is a real gem if authentic Spain is what you are looking for. We loved it, very pretty, friendly and full of character. Margaret the owner was the perfect host providing gems of advice and wisdom, and always replied to our enquiries straight away so generously.

Beautiful location, lovely quaint cottage and great pool
The terrace was gorgeous, with spectacular views although don't forget the mosquito repellent if sitting out in the evening. Wifi was good and the kitchen spacious and well equipped. Loved the pool area - great temperature in pool. Unfortunately the weather was unusually hot some of the time we were there so the upstairs rooms were difficult to sleep in - downstairs remained relatively cool though. We had a very relaxing time at the cottage with plenty of privacy. Rather a lot of ants both in and out of the cottage but you get used to them! We would recommend the restaurant Jomay as the family and staff were very friendly (despite our language barrier) and generous and food the best in village. Stunning views in Montefrio.

marvellous Monetario Farmhouse
We were lucky enough to have spent a whole month in such a beautiful, peaceful spot. The ideal place to meet up with family and friends. The farmhouse is a short way out of the beautiful town of Monefrio accessed by a track through the olive groves, secluded and quiet apart from the sounds of birds, peacocks. Margaret , the owner offered very welcome advice on what to do and see both before and during the holiday and was always easily accessible by email. The farmhouse is well equipped and has a lovely homely feel of a much loved property. The layout offers space for different age or family groups to holiday together. There are many interesting places to visit, one of the highlights being a trip to Granada and staying at the lovely Hotel America in the Alhambra grounds. Margaret the owner recommended this and was definitely worth doing. It means you miss the crowds in the early morning and evening. We also did some trips to Malaga, Rhonda, Alcala La Real, Alhama la Granada, Moncil , Antiquera and Monachil all well worth a visit. Even though we did do many trips we thoroughly enjoyed just staying around the terrace or by the pool. As the weather was so good during our stay we spent most days swimming in the lovely pool. We loved going into Montefio most days for our supplies of milk, bread, wine, fruit and cheeses etc. The locals hardly spoke any English but were always very helpful and welcoming. We mainly ate on the terrace at the farmhouse but did enjoy a meal at El Pregonero and the Convent at the weekend. We could have done with even more than a month as we did not see everything we wanted to. We would thoroughly recommend this farmhouse to anyone who enjoys staying in a quiet, beautiful place with stunning views in an area with stunning scenery and plenty of history. Thanks Margaret for allowing us to stay in your wonderful, peaceful property.

Restored Farmhouse with Pool
Lovely restored old farmhouse in the countryside around Montefrio. House was very well equipped with plenty of space and a lovely patio with stupendous views of the surrounding olive groves and hills. There was also a large a clean pool that we all enjoyed, especially given the July heat. Well worth a visit!

Christmas break
This year my husband and I decided to have a rather different Christmas and take our three grown up children ( in their 20's) to Spain. We had a great time in the farmhouse which provided the accommodation we required ( they each like their privacy) and wonderful views. We were warmly welcomed on arrival - literally and metaphorically which was very helpful for the weather was cold and the log fire and heaters much needed, and much appreciated. While the rooms are small we fitted in well and the sunshine allowed us to eat outside at lunch time. Finding everything in apple pie order and clean was a great boon. The fixtures and fittings are not grand but they look like fond treasures found and guarded over years and they work. Its a very peaceful spot and a great treat to be able to walk through the olive groves into town (Montefrio) and into the hills. Margaret Cook and her husband leave a very useful vade mecum file on local walks, where to eat and how to get to Grenada, Malaga etc. We had two jaunts in our 5 days: one to Grenada and a second to ski in the Sierra Nevada. Both were great fun. But the local walks and mooching round Montefrio , and reading books by the fire, were equally good fun. We returned after 5 days feeling mentally relaxed and physically in much better shape than we would have been after the usual 5 days of big eating and TV watching in the UK.

Five stars for Seven Olives
We stayed at the Seven Olives in early July and were captivated by the house and its surroundings. Everyone in the family from oldest to youngest was in love with it. It manages to pull off the feat of making one feel at home and abroad at the same time. Its idiosyncratic, traditional Andalucian interior – with tables, ledges, day beds and shelves built into the structure and beautiful striped fabrics everywhere – is delightfully unfamiliar. And yet the place has an exceptionally welcoming, comfortable, undemanding feel (it completely avoids the impersonality that can mar rented properties). And what you have no way of telling in advance (because the photographs give no sense of its scale) is how spacious it will feel when you get there. It has a really wide terrace (on which most of the summer living is done), a glorious view of the Parapanda mountains opposite and a perfectly situated swimming pool on a lower level at the bottom of a path edged by rosemary and lavender bushes. It was very hot – but the air in Montefrio has an edge of chill about it (the ‘frio’ just about making itself felt) which is a blessed relief – the atmosphere is far more comfortable than in Granada in summer. The house is intelligently equipped (juicers, garlic-crushers, hair-dryers – you name it). And Margaret Cook, the owner, could not have been more helpful with the questions we kept lobbing at her before and during our stay – going way beyond the call of duty to make sure we enjoyed the holiday. I particularly adored the spectacular walk from the house to Montefrio for breakfast – it is such a jewel of a town, absolutely earning its reputation as one of the prettiest white hillside towns in Andalucia. Sleeping under the stars in the sturdy canvas hammock was, for some of our party, one of the most memorable pleasures of the fortnight. But above all, we were all reminded of what a luxury it is to live in simplicity in a beautiful place.

Beautiful retreat
We stayed at the end of May in lovely period of sunshine (two adults and our 11 year old son). The farmhouse is delightful - with stunning vista from the terrace over olive groves and to the distant mountains. We spent most of our time at the house enjoying the peace and the views and the pool. The farmhouse feels wonderfully authentic (since it is a restored old property) and much loved. The kitchen is equipped with all the real crockery/cooking stuff that you'd find in a family home - and just what we needed to cook wonderful breakfasts/lunches and dinners. We ate every day (morning, middle of day and evening) on the terrace and would never grow tired of the view. Siesta'd in the hammock there too. The pool set below the house is idyllic - 21 degrees when we were there so we were in to cool off and splash around, and our son happily jumped in and out for much longer. The beds are very comfy and have nice linens/blankets. We didn't know that end May the night temperatures can drop - so we would pack some English nightshirts next time! Main bathroom was unexpectedly spacious and bath large and lovely. Open fire place in the sitting room a lovely touch (we had welcoming wood fire each evening). The surrounding countryside is olive groves and flowers (May) was beautiful and we took some gentle walks (to work up appetite). The people in Montefrio (5 mins down road by car) were very warm and welcoming every time we ventured into the shops - to the fishmongers, the ironmongers (for a paella pan to take home) and so on. Cafe Elena just by the amazing round church sold fanatastic churros and chocolate (as well as tostadas) - full of locals (and us) to enjoy. Local olives/wine/pottery etc from turisticos shop in main square were also inexpensive and people v nice. Also spectacular setting of church on the hill so beautiful to arrive at every time. The track down to the farmhouse is a fairly typical dirt road - so drive carefully down it and have a robustish car. Granada is just a short (under an hour) drive away down easy (and first 15k from the house v beautiful) roads. We flew in to Seville and the drive back to airport just under 3 hours very easy. Cordoba also in striking distance (but we didn't end up going since staying in house just too nice!) What more can we say? Showed pics and recommended it to friends on our return - and they want to book in themselves.

About the host

Hosted by Margaret Cook

Host profile image
Recently retired, we like to spend as much time as we can at El Cortijo de Los Siete Olivos. As city dwellers we love the beauty and slower pace of life that Montefrio offers us. Seven grandchildren, living variously between Edinburgh and Oxford keep us rooted in the UK.

Why they chose this property

We wanted to experience life in traditional Spain, so chose to buy in Montefrio as it offered us a country area within easy access of the coast and a major city. We feel incredibly lucky that we chanced upon this little town as its beauty never fails to delight us every time we return. The local area offers so much in terms of history, walking and bird watching, and with the proximity to Granada, access to restaurants, shops, city life in general and of the course the wonderful Alhambra Palace.
For families with children, there are many activities to enjoy, the Aquaola Water Park and the amazing Science Park in Granada, and watching flamingos. Locally in Montefrio horse riding and cycling are available.

What makes this property unique

Our 150 year old farmhouse was restored about twenty five years ago using traditional methods and materials. White uneven lime-washed walls and birchwood beams and the local brightly coloured Alpujarran fabrics used throughout the house reflect its traditional past, whilst offering comfortable modern convenience.
We enjoy beautiful views of the Parapanda mountain across the valley from all the terraces around the house, and starry nights are quite magical.
The approach to the house is along one of the many pale dusty tracks that meander over these hillsides, lined with almond trees, through groves of Hojiblanca and Picual olives. Although only five minutes from town by car you feel you are in a different world.
