About this property

Cottage On Pier, Holy Loch Shore, Sea And Mountain Views, listed building 1830

Post Office House is an unusual 'B' listed building, offering comfortable accommodation with a 'wow' factor on the western boundary of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Well positioned for enjoying the Park (walking, biking, forests, mountains, lochs), exploring Argyll (castles, beaches, islands, history) and days out to Glasgow (culture, shops, museums, food.
Perhaps you need a break from all this activity, put your feet up, with a good book, and relax in front of the wood burning stove. Enjoy the views of the Holy Loch, watch out for otters.
It's an open plan house, sleeps two in a double bed, plus the option of a third person in a folding single bed (bedding provided), to be set up where you wish. If you are two but don't share a bed, just ask for the single bed to be provided.

Perfect little cottage
We stayed for a week in this lovely house. It is small but beautifully formed with a cosy vibe and equipped with absolutely everything that you might need to ensure it feels like home from home. It is situated right on the shore line so if coming with dogs, like we did, you conveniently step out of the door onto the beach and there are miles and miles of forest tracks in the immediate locality for walking. Life was very simple and relaxing which was exactly what we were looking for and we would definitely be hoping to return at some point in the future

Perfect Little Getaway
Could not have asked for a lovelier stay! The house was extremely well equipped with everything we could possibly need. Also had such a cosy feel. There is lots to do round about and there is a bus that comes once an hour right at the door so we didn’t feel restricted without a car! If you want a cosy stay would 100% recommend! We are already discussing coming back :)

Unique
This was my second visit and it did not disappoint. The cottage has great character as well as great views. It's cosy as well as spacious, preventing two adults and 2 dogs from falling over each other. Summer or winter, rain or shine, this is a home from home.

Extraordinary
We spent a very relaxing week in sunny weather in this beautiful little house. Very suitable for excursions into the surrounding area, including public transport (the bus leaves once an hour). Or to make yourself cosy in front of the fireplace when it rains.

Peaceful and relaxing
Cottage is very quirky and has everything you could possibly need, it's on the bus route to town if you don't drive and the owners have a drawer full of leaflets of what's in and around for people to do. Views in and around the area are superb also.

Wonderful stay in a beautiful property
Very comfortable and enjoyable stay in a great area of Argyle. Michael was a great host, and having made sure we were comfortably settled left us to enjoy the peace and tranquility that this part of the world offers. Saw the otter at the end of the pier on our first day and loved watching the Oyster Catchers at work on the beach. We will definitely be back.

Cosy cottage with amazing views
We loved our stay here. Its close to many lovely walks and there are fantastic views from the cottage windows right across the loch. Enjoyed the many different visiting sea birds and took many photos. We had our dog with us, and although the cottage doesnt have and enclosed outdoor space it wasnt a problem. We could take her along the pathway at the side of the cottge and we could let her off the lead onto the small beach. Kilmun is very picturesque, we would most certainly return. moscrreturn.return.

About the host

Hosted by Mike McDonald

Host profile image
Mike and Dinah McDonald arrived in Cowal 50 years ago and decided it was heaven.
Mike was an Outdoor Education teacher, so if you want great suggestions for local walks, climbing, canoeing, biking, just ask.
Dinah managed accommodation in Glasgow, from city centre hotels to social housing. She now owns Bookpoint, Dunoon's bookshop, where you can browse amongst 11,000 books, enjoy coffee and home baking, and choose from a wide selection of Scottish gifts.

Why they chose this property

We just love the variety and contrasts; only an hour away to the cosmopolitan european city of Glasgow, fine dining, art galleries, stunning museums, yet step off the ferry in Dunoon and you enter such a different world, a National Park of forests, mountains, coast, rivers, lochs, deer in the garden and eagles overhead.

We had always been attracted by Post Office House when it was the village store and Post Office, a curious historic building in a fantastic location, so we didn't hesitate when it was for sale, needing a major rebuild. We learnt new skills: scottish slating, stonemasonry, lime mortar, woodworking with oak, and stained glass to name just a few.
It was finished in 2013 and well worth the wait, we love the end result.

What makes this property unique

Despite the apparently small exterior, the open plan layout makes it surprisingly spacious for 2-3 visitors. It has been rebuilt to a very high standard, with period furniture,
quirky woodwork, ever-changing views, original artwork, and a cosy stove.
