About this property

Secluded Finca with Private pool, magnificent mountain views and private fishing

El Figueral is our Olive Farm located half way between Barcelona in the North, Valencia in the South and around 35-40 minutes inland from the closest beaches of the Costa Dorada. Follow the River Ebro upstream from the Ebro Delta past the Parc Natural dels Ports immense limestone crags, ridges and pinnacles capped by mount Caro, past the historic city of Tortosa between the mountains of the Els Ports Massif to the West, the Serra de Cardo to the East and below the Cardo mountain, 58m above the river in a protected area approached only by a single farm track you will find El Figueral. You will not be disturbed, perhaps by the odd eagle, splash of a rising fish or the sound of a tractor. The closest village is the riverside village of Benifallet, 2.5 km from the villa, this is an opportunity for an amazing rural "real Spain" family holiday in a location that provides stunning views from the villa and pool overlooking the River Ebro, valley and mountains.
The original farm dwelling was built over 400 years ago and not quite up to the mark, so in 2007 we started remodelling the property. We retained as much of its old charm as we could while modernising and expanding the property. The remodelling added three on-suite bedrooms, provided a light open plan living space, large modernised kitchen, swimming pool, veranda around the West and North sides of the house to shade the patios and of course air-conditioning and central heating. The villa’s layout and position take full advantage of its unique location providing space for those looking to relax and enjoy the sun and outside living that the climate offers.
The Farm House’s original 1st floor is now the master bedroom with its own on suite bathroom containing bath, shower, double wash basin, wc and bidet. The bedroom has a king-size double bed, ample draws, writing desk and TV. A door leads out to a private roof patio.
The ground floor is designed for easy living with each of the main entertainment areas opening out onto patios and the swimming pool. Aligning the split-level lounge/dining area and divided by an atrium are the three ground floor bedrooms, two of which are on-suite plus a family shower room.
The lounge is located on the lower split level with dual aspect patio doors leading to a balcony overlooking the River Ebro and the swimming pool. It contains two large sofas around the coffee table and the TV, that has Movistar, DVD and online via Amazon Fire stick Amazon Prime, Netflix and YouTube and HDMI cable for entertainment. Located in and on the book shelves and cupboards are a selection of DVD, books and games. The centre piece to the space is a feature wood burning fire surrounded by 4 arm chairs, it’s amazing how this fire keeps the thick-walled house warm in the colder periods. Of course, the house is centrally heated and air conditioned in all rooms to handle any climatic conditions.
The dining area on the upper split level includes a dining table and 8 chairs, the accompanying dining room sideboard hosts a retro B&O stereo system. In keeping with the house style there are patio doors leading to the dining area patio with furniture and views looking over the pool and river valley.
The original ground floor area is now the kitchen which retains its old beamed and terracotta tiled farmhouse theme. There is a Kitchen island with 6 stools, so you don’t have to cook alone and a small kitchen lounge area with a sofa and armchairs plus a TV that has Movistar and online via an Amazon Fire stick Amazon Prime, Netflix and YouTube and wood burning fire. The kitchen is well equipped with cutlery and utensils, dish washer, 2 fridge/freezers, large wine, coffee machine, microwave, electric oven and gas hobs. Again, in keeping with the house style there are patio doors leading to a patio area with a large table and chairs, BBQ, open area for relaxing in the sun, and our old Olive tree and views over the valley. The olive tree is synonymous with the product of the farm and its olives are still used in the making of our unique blend of olive oil.
We always keep the wine cooler stocked with recommended local red, white, rosé and cava wines from the Terra Alter and Priorate regions, guests are welcome to purchase these, as Is the case with our olive oil.

A Hidden Secret in Benifallet
If you want to get away from it all in a beautiful house with scenery to die for, then this is it. Don't tell too many because we want to come back. It is out of the way, but not too much. The village of Benifallet has surprisingly good eateries and all the basics, and the town of Tortosa is just a 30 minute drive away. The hosts, David and Angeles are just the best. They are there for you if you need help. All in all a great place to stay with family and friends. Don't forget the sunscreen, and something for the mozzies, they do tend to bite!

We had a wonderful stay in this amazing villa
The property was beautifully located with a fantastic pool and entertainment area. The kids loved the pool and we loved looking at sunsets and the stars at night. We made use of the via verde and did lovely walks from the villa, we also did a lovely canoe trip, and the beach was only 45 minutes. Thank you for letting us stay in your wonderful house, and helping us find all the gems in the area!

Wonderful family holiday!
We spent one week at El Figueral in August 2019 and it did not disappointment! The house is beautifully situated in the mountains overlooking the Rio Ebro. The views were absolutely stunning. The location is what makes this property so unique. From almost every room in the house were amazing views. The pool was a winner for both kids and adults. The local village offered a small grocery store, bakery and butchershop. We had a delicious meal at one of the local restaurants. There were 9 of us including 4 children and we all had an amazing time. There were many activities available to us - we fished (equipment was provided by the owners), went on a river boat cruise and also kayaked along the river (a highlight!). David and Angeles were welcoming, gracious hosts and very responsive to our questions and needs. Eloi, their local property manager/helper was friendly and very, very helpful. Eloi helped book our activities. I would highly recommend this property to anybody. It is truly a special place!

stunning scenery from a beautiful finca
Where we ate: Lunch at mas De Curto, brilliant, a real find, all reviews proved accurate. L'Estany beach, near L'Ametllja, an excellent lunch at the xiringito (beach bar). El retiro, just outside Xerta, a Michelin star restaurant. Incredible food, surroundings and experience. Be very hungry when you go, especially with the tasting menu, and helpful with any dietary changes. L'Ampolla area beach, a light lunch at a taperia called Just Alex. Only been open over a month. But very tasty food. In the village: small bar Catreig, surprisingly very good. Rosa Maria restaurant, again very tasty, The Xiringito restaurant in the village, quality was super. Hotel Pepo, probably the most adventurous of all the village eateries. Again, go hungry for a great experience. Beaches: , L'Estany, near L'Ametllja, longish, clean. One of the many beaches at L'Ampolla, very pretty, blue flag, not too busy. What we did: Eloi got us on to a private tour of Benifallet, an eye-opener, the old church, the old honey mill, tales of Moors, civil wars and river floods. Las cuevas De Benifallet, wonderfully cool inside (18C), compared to 44C outside. The guide was good. Excellent, worth a trip. Benifallet boat trip. It is very informative, the commentary is in Catalan, everything is, but some Spanish and English meant we could understand. Beware of resin leaking wooden seating, it ruins clothes. We spent a couple of hours in Tortosa, the biggest and busiest local town. Quite old, the cathedral is worth a visit. The green way bicycle excursion, electric bikes are on offer. You go past fab scenery and tunnels, thoroughly enjoyable. Kayaking, a great half day experience, breakfast, swim and guide provided. Well worth it. The fruit and honey seller will recommend buying the kayak and boat trip tour together, from the Tourist Office, saves some money. Arriving late Saturday, we had pre ordered some provisions, worth it, as san Juan festival meant no shops were open til Tuesday! The village shops are not numerous, but there’s a butcher, gift and a corner shop, Suma, an Aladdin's cave. Had it not been for the heatwave, we might have ventured more, but 46C was overwhelming, so stayed by the beautiful pool, the scenery and the air conditioning! Every other day we BBQ’d. All facilities, suited us very well. The property, and the surrounding land was maintained by Eloi, he volunteered taking us to and from restaurants, there are no taxis. We are v grateful! Thanks to David y Angeles

Stunning Location with excellent fishing
We stayed at El Figueral 25th August to 3rd September. Situated in a remote stunning location with panoramic views over the river Ebro it was an ideal location to enjoy the Spanish sunshine and not worry about disturbing any neighbours!! However the highlight was the fishing from the private pegs on the river bank. We had 'unfinished business' with the cat fishing having previously had a poor visit in 2016. This time the fish were plentiful, Tom and Nick both broke the 100lb barrier with 126lb and 130lb respectively. backed up with amongst several other cats at 68, 49, 45, 39, 36 and several around the 20lb mark. Also a number of carp were caught best in at 22lb common. Thoroughly enjoyable holiday. Thanks to David and Angeles for their hospitality and a special thanks to the attention and support from Eloi. Many thanks Nick, Tom, Janice, Kelly, Grace and Lauren

Paradise
From our warm welcome from David and Angeles we knew we had found a special place. The villa is stunning and the surrounding area is so beautiful. Our thanks to Eloi for his help and attention during our visit. The visit to the Marvellous Caves is exceptional. We were lucky in that we were the only group visiting on the morning we went and it is an incredible experience. Sadly we didn't get the trip on the river as the boat was only running at weekends. The kayaking on the river gave our son a lot of pleasure and trying to photograph the numerous herons and kingfishers gave us a lot of pleasure. We even got to see the hoopoes which we don't have in England. The shops and baker in Benifallet were very good - the bread was delicious. Nearby Tortosa had the bigger supermarkets if you wanted them. Quite simply, in many years of villa holidays in different countries, El Figueral is top of our list. Thank you David and Angeles.

We were blown away by the property. It's a truly breath taking location and a stunning villa.
We stayed at the villa in August with another family and we were all completely blown away by both the location and the villa itself. It truly felt like a bit of luxury and I dont think I could ever take enough photos to do it justice! The view is breathtaking and the house, pool and gardens make the most of it. The house felt like a home and we spent many lovely hours by the pool, and fishing nearby. We had 4 young children with us and they especially enjoyed the pool and walking down to the river, to fish. David and Angeles were perfect hosts, answering many random questions and kindly booking tables for us, when our Spanish let us down (!). We also can't speak highly enough of Eloi, the gentleman who looked after the house- he was also extremely helpful and accommodating, booking our kayaking trip for us. We had a wonderful week, in a very special location and will definitely return.

La piscina esta muy bien mantenida por Eloy, que siempre estuvo ademas muy disponible para todas nuestras preguntas y pequenas necesidades durante la estadia. A fine property in a beautiful and peaceful location
El Figueral is well appointed and spacious inside, although we spent most of our time outside. It is high above the river with broad, sweeping views of the water and the agriculture on the other side. Very secluded and relaxing, with a great pool, and we were very well looked after by Eloi.

Wonderful
We had a lovely holiday. Incredibly peaceful, stunning position overlooking the river, lovely pool which was well taken care of daily. We canooed on the river, fished (didn't catch anything but then we are amateurs), went to the beach, cooked on the barbq, amongst other activities....and star gazed lying in the pitch black by the pool...shooting stars every night and millions of stars. Amazing. David and Angeles have a fab house and I would love one day to return.

Rural Spain at it's finest.
We were a family of 10 gathering to celebrate a significant birthday so expectations were high. The birthday girl's heart's desire was to laze by a pool in beautiful surrounding and this finca ticked all the boxes. The view from the pool area, high above the river, is truly spectacular, particularly at sunset. I photographed the view from every angle possible and have already framed photographs to remind me of happy times. It was also fascinating to look down at activity on and around the river through the binoculars which the owner has made available at the finca. The property itself is very well equipped- we ate at home every evening as one of our number is an exceptional cook- fantastic paella, all the ingredients purchased at the local supermarket. Late night watching DVDS from a very well stocked library- Twelve Angry Men enjoyed by all. Shutters on all windows and guaranteed silence at night meant we all slept really well. Breakfast outside on a gorgeous patio after an early morning swim. There are some lovely local beaches although we preferred to be poolside. Still playing ball at 9pm with the pool lit up as it got dark and the water like a warm bath. We followed the recommendations of our host for some late lunches in the local village- Sunday's lunch started at 4pm. Great food, excellent value. Cava Thursday at another local restaurant was properly celebrated followed by a riverboat trip passing our ' home' looking spectacular from below. We joined the party for a week only, the birthday girl and her husband were lucky enough to spend a fortnight and founds lots to explore in the area though if , like us, your main aim is to hunker down in a beautiful place, cook, eat delicious food, drink great wine, this property is perfect in every way. It helped of course that temperatures were in the 30s every day and not a cloud in the sky.

Great property, with stunning views and beautiful location
Just back from spending 2 weeks in this lovely home. We were 2 families sharing and we had everything we needed, with plenty of space for everyone. This home was well equipped for a large family and we loved swimming in the pool with great views across the hills and river. So glad we opted for this property, and Benigallet is a beautiful village. We sampled the hospitality in the Casel (great prices) enjoyed a 3 hour 'lunch' at a local restaurant recommended by David and Angela, which was great value at 12 euro's per head, and a lovely evening in Rosa Mari's. Everyone was so friendly and happy to help us translate in our broken Spanish. Nothing was too much trouble for Elio, who looked after the property and us. We will miss those stunning views

About the host

Hosted by David and Angeles

Host profile image
Hi, we are David and Angeles and have 5 boys. We both grew up and worked in the cities, of London and Valencia. After running business's and teaching we decided to move to Spain, Angeles home country for a more relaxed life style. We now grow olives producing "Ollie Oil", rent El-Figueral to holiday guests. and run a mindfulness retreat. I Fish the River Ebro and potter around with cars while Angeles teaches Mindfulness to individuals and corporate clients. Otherwise we enjoy travelling, wine tasting and living a much more relaxed way of life in this very sociable corner of Spain.

Why they chose this property

In 2003 we started looking for a unique rural property with access to the River Ebro to indulge my passion for fishing and as previously mentioned Angeles desire to run mindfulness courses in a quiet calm location. We holidayed and investigated many properties along the course of the river ebro until we stumbled across El Figueral in 2004, it took less than a minute for us to decide that this was our dream. As they say location ,location,.... The views overlooking a spectacular valley with the river ebro gloriously running through it were magic.

The property consisted 80,000 sqm of farm land on the banks of the River Ebro growing mandarins and peaches with an old 90 sqm farmhouse needing some love and attention on two floors. A farm house of sorts had stood on this location for over 400 years and indeed provided front line accommodation with magnificent views for the International Brigade during the Spanish civil war!
El Figueral offered us the perfect location to build our dream house and provide additional income from sharing our dream.

What makes this property unique

We love El Figueral’s isolated location sitting high up looking down on the magnificent steep sided Ebro valley, its closeness to the friendly riverside village of Benifallet, its closeness to the many small fishing villages and beaches of the Costa Dorada and Ebro Delta, the miles of beautiful walks through unspoilt countryside or cycling the old railway track. So much to do, So relaxing.
We are kept busy with the businesses, trying to catch an even bigger fish, flying up and down the Ebro on one of the motor boats and maintaining El Figueral which is a never-ending labour of love; we have changed our crop three times from mandarins to peached to Olives. There is always something to do, but at the end of the day there’s the pool, the views, a glass of wine, good music or a trip to Benifallet to relax.
Benifallet has around 750 very friendly and welcoming residents, it’s very much a farming village, as is evidenced by the stream of tractors that pass by while you’re sitting outside one of the bars drinking a glass of wine or beer. Life here is easy-going, indeed slow when comparing Benifallet lifestyle with city life “the real Spain”. However, for a small village on the banks of the River Ebro, Benifallet has an extraordinary selection of very good restaurants and bars 6 in total that bring dinners from the surrounding towns and villages to sample their local dishes. Try the Xiringuito they have an excellent menu of the day, for the uninitiated, a four-course meal with wine for around €12.00, they also provide an exceptional a la carte menu. Pepo’s hotel, Brasserie Rosa Mari, Carl Miguel, Ca Treig and Cal Ferrer a small bar just off the river where we meet guests. Indeed, many of the ex-pats in the village came for a holiday and never left. To quote an ex-pat “An essential part of being here and experiencing village life is a beaming smile and an “Hola!” or “Bon dia!” to everyone you pass in the street. Just about sums it up.
