About this property

Cozy Cottage Retreat with Sandy Beach on Grand Traverse Bay

Welcome to Cedar Cove – a fourth generation family cottage on Northport Bay just off Lake Michigan! Enjoy Saturday to Saturday stays from June to August.

Unplug and kick back for a summer vacation retreat like no other. Right outside the lakeside porch door is your own private sandy beach that is ideal for swimming, beachside strolls, petoskey hunting, and evening fires. If you like to get out onto the water, Cedar Cove is a paradise for swimming, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding, wind surfing, water skiing, and fishing. The clear, azure fresh water of Lake Michigan reminds many people of the Caribbean.

Cedar Cove can comfortably sleep up to 10 with three bedrooms overlooking the bay, and one additional bedroom on the first floor - the sunshine room. The sofa bed in the living room next to the beautiful stone fireplace provides additional sleeping options. The full bath upstairs and half bath downstairs are complemented by the outdoor shower with the view of the bay – the perfect stop to warm yourself after a swim.

A fully equipped kitchen with stove, oven, microwave, toaster, dishwasher, coffee maker, tea kettle and waffle iron connects to a beautiful dining room with seating for 14 to accommodate the crowd. You may find yourself taking breakfast or lunch in the large screened-in porch with its picnic table or sitting at the counter seating in the kitchen.

Oh, did we mention the beach! So many ways to simply relax and enjoy your day, sitting in the Adirondack chairs on the deck, or the nearby hammock, or the chaise lounges on the beach.

Cedar Cove has a kid-friendly, private sandy-bottom beach along with a permanent wide "crib" dock perfect for sunbathing, playing in the sand, great conversations, reading, or just hanging out. The dock is protected by a picturesque peninsula - a great place to sit and watch the water, great sunrises and sunsets. Beach amenities include a solo-stove fire pit, patio table and chairs, reclining beach lounges – and just enough shade for those who prefer (or need) to escape the heat! Two stand-up paddleboards (SUPs), two kayaks, and a rowboat allow you to explore the bay – try it at twilight as the sun sets over Paradesia Point to the west!

THE LEELANAU PENINSULA AND NORTHPORT

Our cottage is located near the tip of the idyllic Leelanau Peninsula - a place known for wonderful hiking, breathtaking scenery, spectacular cycling and a surprising variety of places to eat, shop, drink and entertain in the nearby picture perfect towns. Northport, Leland, and Suttons Bay each have their own unique character: including shops, galleries, restaurants, waterfront, and marina.

Cedar Cove is located just a couple of miles north of the Village of Northport off M22 and about an hour’s scenic drive to the spectacular Sleeping Bear Dunes - the “Most Beautiful Place in America." There are wineries throughout the Peninsula and the area is the largest cherry growing region in the world. Try picking up a quart of those sweet black cherries at a roadside stand and see if you can get it all the way home! Be sure to visit farmer’s markets in Northport, Leland and Sutton’s Bay to sample a variety of local foods and artisanal flavors. Make time for a hike and swim on the dunes stretching down to Lake Michigan at nearby Leelanau State Park – just a short five minute drive away - or tour and picnic at the historic lighthouse at the tip of the Peninsula. Interested in catching a movie? Check what’s playing at the Bay Theatre in Suttons – perhaps after trying your hand at bowling at NPG in downtown Northport, and one of the fantastic wood fired pizzas at either the Union or Woody's at the Mitten Brewpub.

RELAXING AT CEDAR COVE

With all that can be appreciated nearby, we often find all we need right at Cedar Cove – enjoying the lap of the waves on the shore, the clouds and breeze while sitting at the end of the dock, a refreshing swim, a long day of reading books and quiet conversation – the handmade quilts on each upstairs bed make for wonderful nights of restful and recuperative vacation slumber.

We welcome well-behaved pets, but do not permit the use of jet skis, out of respect for neighbors and the quiet relaxation that Cedar Cove will bring to you and your family.

Thanks for considering Cedar Cove for your summer vacation. We love this place and are sure that you will too.

SOME OF THE OTHER THINGS THAT WE LOVE ABOUT CEDAR COVE

- picking out a board game or puzzle to work on as a family
- finding a book and cozying up in the living room on a cool day or evening to read
- cornhole down on the beach
- a morning of waffles with cherries on top
- sitting on the end of the peninsula fishing or watching the clouds and the waves
- hopping on one of the great vintage bikes and riding around
- a three-mile walk or bike to town for ice cream
- cedar filled woods where the kids enjoy exploring
- grilling at the charcoal Weber grill with various BBQ accessories
- picking up cinnamon twists at Barb’s Bakery

Beautiful Bay Stay

This was our 4th visit. It never gets old. Perfect location on the bay. The beach makes easy access in and out of the water and our dogs love it. We also enjoy the dock set up for our boat.

Quiet cove on Grand Traverse Bay

This is a cozy cottage with a beautiful view of Grand Traverse Bay. There's great fishing right off the dock, and numerous water toys for both youth and adults, including 2 nice paddle-boards and 2 kayaks which were enjoyed on several occasions. There's a small sandy beach with chairs, a hammock, and adult chair-swing, and an easy swim to a raft for small ones (adults can walk out to it). There's a wonderful long dining room table for meals and games, and a nice screened-in porch with a beautiful view of the Bay that has a table big enough for meals/games. The kitchen is adequate but on the small side with little counter space for meal preparation. The living room is cozy, but maybe a bit cramped for more than 5 or 6 people. The outdoor shower is roomy and nice. There's easy access to Northport, Leland, & Sutton's Bay and a beautiful Lake Michigan beach for strolling and rock hunting is just minutes away at Leelanau State park. Also recommended is the hike at the Kehl Lake Natural Area, again just minutes away. Two close-by micro-brews (Mitten in Northport and Hop Lot in Suttons Bay) offer a large selection of tasty brews, and of course there are wineries around every corner. But the best place to enjoy a cold beverage or morning coffee is on the beach or dock!

Family vacation

This was our third time renting this property. It is everything a Lakehouse should be. Cozy interior, beautiful beach, boating access and Petoskey stone hunting. The owner was wonderful to work with. He answered all of our questions and even found us a place to park our boat trailer for the week. We would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Cedar Cove Vacation

When our children were young we rented Cedar Cove for our Northport vacation. We were not disappointed with our return vacation with our adult children and grandchildren. The cottage is well appointed with everything needed. The beds are comfortable and the home is well suited to accommodate a large group. The bay is the highlight and we enjoyed the raft, paddle boards, and kayaks. Thank you for sharing your home with our family!

Great beach

The beach is fantastic. We loved the sand, the kayaks and SUP and were thrilled with the swimming raft. We did not see anywhere with better shoreline. The cabin is a historic cabin—I would guess 1940s-and is what you would expect. We really loved the lake side porch.

Anytime you’re Up North is a good time!

This rental is just as described. The beach and water is awesome. We really appreciated the kayaks & paddle boards on site. And nice dock for our boat. The house itself was clean worked well for us, it is outdated but cozy. We had a wonderful week up in the Leelanau area!!

Family Vaca

My family loved our week at Cedar Cove! The home and family are incredibly welcoming. We loved the beach, kayaks, the outdoor shower, and using the screened in back porch to play board games together every night. The home is nestled in the trees and was a cozy place to relax and let the dogs play on the beach. The location is great and gave us the opportunity to see and do everything we wanted while we were visiting the area.

It’s all about the dock!

This property is exactly as described. The property manager was very responsive and there for every need. The outdoor space is what this place is all about. Have fun outside with the kayaks and SUP. Great dock and beach for the day and fire pit for the evening. We will be coming back!

Rustic lake charm

Great location on water, toys, games, 2 paddle boards. This cottage helps you relax. It is rustic in the sense of age of cottage and alittle rough with cleanliness, but all in all I would stay again.

Location, location, location!!!!

We absolutely loved our stay in Northport at Cedar Cove! The outdoor area and beach cannot be beat. While the cottage is definitely rustic, it has everything you need and the beds are comfortable. We loved the outdoor shower and fishing off the dock- our son caught 31 rock bass over the course of the week!

Incredible beach with great dock and secluded feel due to surrounding trees. Lots of lake toys too!

Cedar Cove was amazing. The wooded surroundings isolated us from neighbors, naking us feel like we were in the woods. The beach, paddleboards, kayaks, canoe, rowboat, all these wonderful toys kept us and our kids busy. The water is crystal clear. As for the house, it met our needs perfectly. With two families with 4 teens from 13 to 15, we were worried about the lack of TV or Wi-Fi. The kids didn't miss it one bit. Spending all day outside on the water or exploring, then coming in at dark (which was after 10pm) and playing poker or UNO was all the entertainment we needed. The screened in porch was very welcome also on the nights when it got a little buggy. The nearby village of Northport was quaint, and had everything we needed, from marina to shops to restaurants, brewery, and bowling alley. We also explored a bit, going to Sutton's Bay, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and even renting a boat and taking it down to Traverse City. But most of our memories were at the house. There was enough room for 4 adults, 4 teens, and our dogs. As a previous commenter noted, the kitchen had not been updated in several years, but it was not dirty. The kids even put on their own version of "Chopped", making several dishes from scratch using only what was available at the house and the local grocery store, including gnocchi, chicken and waffles, a chocolate trifle, and donut holes! There was a full bath upstairs, a half bath down, and an outside shower, which provided more than enough accommodation. There are no laundry facilities, so make sure you pack enough for your stay. There may be a laundromat in town, but we never needed one. We have stayed in more luxurious and modern houses, but none as relaxing and welcoming as this. We would go back in a heartbeat if it was about 500 miles closer!

Disappointed

Over all, the property has great potential, but lack of care and attention caused us to not enjoy our time at the property to the extent possible and we believed that we did not receive the value for the expense. The food prep area appears more than outdated, but despite our efforts to assure it is clean, continued to look grimy and unsanitary. The kitchen floor is carpeted, probably due to the flooring failing, but it is an area where germs and dropped food cannot be adequately cleaned. The bottom cabinets lack coverings and bowls rest on the floor. A representation of being cleaned that morning could not be disputed, but corners in every room had cob webs, spiders, dirt or evidence of lack of cleaning. A exterior cleaning would have helped too. To be fair, the beach was a redeeming feature along with the dock and water crafts, which were thoroughly enjoyed.
