About this property

Beautiful stone house, high in the medieval mountain village of Roccacasale

Re-opening June 2024, first time since Covid. New smart TV, washing machine, dining table and chairs, roof terrace furniture, high speed internet and re-decorated --- My house is located near the top of the picturesque, medieval, village of Roccacasale which nestles on the side of the Montagna del Morrone, just inside the Majella National Park and only a few kilometers away from all the national and regional parks of Abruzzo. It is only 9km from the beautiful historic town of Sulmona, very close to the thermal spas at Popoli, a 40-minute drive from miles of pristine sandy beaches at Pescara on the Adriatic coast and only a 30-minute drive from ski resorts. The house itself has been lovingly restored, is made from Majella stone and has two large bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a large attractive living room with two balconies, a pretty fruit garden with a large BBQ, a fully equipped kitchen and a roof terrace with staggering views of the surrounding mountains and the village below. It is perfect for anyone who loves walking, the outdoors, exploring mountain villages and castles, or for simply relaxing on the terrace enjoying the view with local food and wine.

We had a great time in Abruzzo staying at this property. The property has ample space, is very quiet and a great price. It has great views of the valley and is near Sulmona and just an hour from the beaches in Pescara. There is plenty of space and plenty of beds. Having three bathrooms was great. Mark was very helpful and easy to communicate with leading up to the stay and during the stay. If you want to stay in a roomy place to experience a real Italian village this is it. You will not see any other tourists here. The sunrise and sunset on the balcony were beautiful.

Cleanliness Not Up to Par
Mark was super friendly and available to give us an initial tour of the property and to answer questions about activities, grocery store, etc. We love the little town and it's residents who all know Mark. The views from the property are breath-taking and day trips to adjacent areas convenient. The price to rent the property was outstanding. Parking was available but not close. We drove a Jeep Compass, which made it difficult to navigate the narrow, curvy road - rent the smallest car possible for your group. We made the steep trek to the property with our luggage, not for the faint of heart. The space could definitely use some organization and deep cleaning - the appliances and dishes needed to be washed before we would use them. The bathrooms were OK but needed some minor cleaning and repair. The beds are doubles, not queen or king, making it more comfortable for couples to sleep in two separate beds. The bedding was clean but not clean and crisp as we have experienced in other properties, making us feel a bit leery about the freshness. The space is huge and would be great for a large group that may be in the area for a ski or hiking trip.

Most wonderful place
Most wonderful place, plenty of room and an astonishing roof terrace with a great view on the valley. Location on top of a traditional mountain village is beautiful. Only car parking is a challenge.

A very nice house in a beautiful situation.
A spacious house in a great position, nearly at the top of a hill village (last bit of access on foot uphill); with a fantastic roof terrace with views right over the valley and to the hills beyond and behind. A lovely friendly little village at the top of a steep road, though with all town amenities a couple of miles away, and village bars and restaurant within easy walking distance. Clean and well-maintained with all expected facilities; the owner who lived adjacent was very friendly and helpful, with information and suggestions about places to go and to eat. The whole Abruzzo area is beautiful but not at all 'touristy' - lovely countryside, historic towns and villages, walks, abbeys, and the coast is quite accessible too.

exploring abruzzo
The house was well renovated with care to uphold some original character, and can accommodate comfortably 6 people or more. It is set steeply up the vast hills at about 1200 feet. It is necessary to park and walk a short steep paved road to the accommodation. The owner operator is friendly and helpful and lives in the lower level of the building. He prepared a great meal featuring some local foods apon our request at arrival. The kitchen serves as a generous dining room with good kinves, cutting boards and a fine oven. Roccacasale is a quiet village. It is well located to explore the many incredible larger towns nearby. The scenery of Abruzzo is amazing and the views from the house and roof terrace are wonderful.

Look elsewhere...
We booked Mark’s house for a 16 day vacation from the States late June to mid- July. We are a family of 5, with three children ages 6, 3.5 and 2.5. My review is much longer, but I'm limited in space so I'll keep it brief. The place has no AC, and no screens.. So you either sweat or risk getting eaten alive by bugs at night. The bottom bedroom is subterranean and extremely humid, basically unusable. The worst part of this trip was getting eaten alive by bed bugs starting after day 2.. In all, my wife, myself, and my 2 year old daughter were eaten alive.. I'm talking dozens and dozens of bites that itch for weeks on end. My wife and I were up all nights applying anti-itch cream to be able to stop itching long enough to sleep. I had to leave after 9 nights as we couldn't take it anymore. Mark agreed to refund part of my stay and I haven't seen any refund yet. If you work for your money, value sleep, and don't enjoy being eaten alive by bugs, stay clear of this place. This place ruined my vacation, don't let it ruin yours.

really very nice play to stay, nothing to complain
We (a Dutch family with 2 children) had a great time in this nice an comfortable house. There where more then enough beds and even 3 bathrooms. The contact with the owner was really good and he even arranged access with the internet for the days we stayed. The village is very quiet in this time of the year. We were not so lucky with the weather but the surrounding and the sceenery is beautiful with lots of nice old little villages to walk around. We even did a daytrip to Rome (1,5 hour by car) which was very easy. Tip: park at one of the parkingplaces near the metrostation outside the center. It's just 1,50 euro for 12 hours, and again 1,50 euro for a metroticket (15 minutes). The combination mountains and city was great. We advise everybody who wants to visit this region to stay in Marc's house, you won't get anything better for this price.

The Real Italy
We recently returned from a week's stay in The Italian medieval village of Roccacasala. The village is bedded into the hillside with views to die for. We were fortunate to find Mark Clark's house for rental and were drawn in by the pictures taken and posted on the website. All the information provided by Mark was brilliant and the e-mail correspondence was superb when setting up the rental agreement. We flew into Rome (Ciampino Airport) on Friday19/09/14, picked up our rental car and set out about 21:00hrs. It took approx. 1.5hrs to get to Roccacasala and we met Mark in one of the 3 local pub's (Bonnie & Clyde) which stays open late. You can get food and drink quite late as we did and the owners are very accommodating. Mark was lovely, we had arranged to meet him here. Mark put himself out to give us a warm friendly welcome and even organised food, drink to get us through the first day of our stay. There are a couple of parking locations at the top of the village, just down from the house. The house itself is a short walk from the car park. The house has the "wow" factor, vaulted ceilings in the bedrooms, lovely shuttered windows, and when you walk out onto the top floor terrace you cannot fail to fall immediately in love with the place. It is clean and spacious inside, 3 bathrooms and a fitted kitchen. This is a fantastic base for access to the Adriatic coast at Pescara, the town of Sulmona and all the surrounding villages. If you are a "walker" this is your dream come true surrounded by all the natural beauty that the Italian National Parks can offer. We all live busy lives, living in a city and wading through the daily traffic. By the time the end of the week came,We had slept so peacefully and deep each night, were so relaxed that we did not want to come home. So anybody out there wishing to get away from it all, experience life in an Italian village with warm, friendly gentle folk. We would strongly recommend contacting Mark and making a booking as soon as you can.

Just fabulous!
We visited this house in Rocacasale in August 2012. The location is amazing, only 30/40 minutes away from Pescara airport and the city, yet this house is nestled into the hillside of a charming village and is so quiet, peaceful and incredibly relaxing. The village itself is really pretty with friendly locals and we were lucky enough to be visiting in the summer, so experienced local music and festivals in the piazzas of Roccacasale and neighbouring villages. The house itself is great, spacious with really comfy beds and lots of bathrooms which were great for us five girls! The kitchen is huge and well stocked and all rooms were lovely and cool which was great when we wanted to escape the heat for a moment. The final thing to mention is the views! There is an amazing view from every window but the views from the terrace were just stunning! We would spend our days visiting local towns and lakes which were all gorgeous but we would all agree at the end of the day to spend the evenings on the terrace. We would eat and enjoy a few glasses of cava watching the sun set over the mountains and then watching the thousands of stars in the clear skies. This property really became our home for ten fabulous days in and I would recommend it to anyone!

Amazing house, amazing location!
Myself and 4 girl friends had a fantastic week staying here in August 2012! The house is really beautiful and in a gorgeous location! Roccacasale is a sweet little village nestled onto the hillside and this makes the views from the roof terrace breathtaking! The house is really spacious with plenty of room for a large family or group of friends and there are plenty of bathrooms as well! The kitchen is spacious and well stocked for cooking. The garden and barbecue weren't finished when we were there but I can imagine the are just the proverbial 'icing on the cake'! We flew into Pescara and hired a car there which we found meant we could explore the area around Roccacasale and get supplies from the supermarket at the bottom of the village. We spent our evenings watching the sunset from the roof terrace and I can't describe how beautiful it was! I would not hesitate to stay here again and can't recommend it highly enough! You will not be disappointed!

An amazing holiday
The English Summer was as rubbish as usual, we all had city sickness and needed to get away, and us girls hadn't got together in a while, so we booked a week at Roccacasale for a much needed holiday. The five of us flew out there not really knowing what to expect - it couldn't have been more welcoming and impressive! The village itself is perfectly situated on the side of the mountain and is a joy to explore with its Medieval ruins, tumbling vines and meandering streets. And the house is something else - a great size (the five of us had plenty of space) and really well equipped. We cooked several times while we were there: buying delicious local produce in the nearby town, cooking in the spacious kitchen and then eating (with maybe a small glass of wine!) on the roof terrace afterwards. And the roof terrace is just breath-taking! With spectacular views across the valley, from sunrise to sunset it really is incredible - we saw so many shooting stars and constellations that you would never normally see. It goes without saying that the house was spotless, the beds were comfy and the service while booking/organising was spot on. Mark couldn't have been more helpful and clearly knows the area inside out. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place.

Had an obso brilliant time in Roccacasale Abruzzo, the village was beautiful as was the accomadation. The house has been recently converted to an excellent standard and was clean and comfortable. All the beds were new aswell as the bedding, the kitchen was equipped with everything u need and more, we also had use of the bbq which was also new ! Mark the owner was a lovely chap but to tell u the truth we hardly saw him, i do believe he can provide a cooking service to which we didn't use other than when he cooked a bbq what was excellent. I throughly recommend this house to people of all ages. Have fun, we did.

Host profile image
Hi, my name is Mark, I'm 48 years old and I have lived in England all my life until I moved here to Abruzzo in April 2013. I have always loved to travel and love the outdoors, especially walking and trekking and this is what inspired me to buy a property and set it up as a holiday let and guest house. I am well educated and have a degree in Economics from York University but I have never really used this. I couldn't get a job when I graduated and so found myself working in kitchens most of my life. I started as a dish washer and worked my way up to Chef. I live in a separate suite at the property and so will be available to cook a BBQ once a week if required and pizza's one evening when I have finished building the wood-fired pizza oven outside the house. I look forward to meeting you

Why they chose this property

I bought a house in Roccacasale in particular because two friends had already bought properties here and made connections with local builders and people necessary for the renovations. I bought this house in particular because I could see that it would be beautiful when restored but mostly because when I walked out onto the 2nd floor balcony and saw the view I went weak at the knees. I had to have it. I had been in Italy for 8 hours for the first time in my life and I agreed to buy it there and then. It took four and a half years of hard work to get the restoration finished and a little longer for the interior and the garden but now it is ready for guests. Roccacasale is perfect for me, it has the peace and tranquillity of a mountain village but is close to larger towns and transport links.

What makes this property unique

The most amazing thing about the property is the view. From the ground floor it is fantastic but from the second floor balconies you get the view that made me buy and this is breathtaking. You can see out above the house and trees and you can see the whole of the Peligna Valley to the right and left surrounded by mountains. 20km long and 10km wide it is a vast beautiful valley with pretty villages dotted along its length. Stunning. Then when you go up another floor to the terrace it gets even better. 360 degrees of mountain views with the village dropping away beneath you so steeply it is almost like being perched on a cliff. In addition to this the house is perfectly positioned for exploring the 3 national parks in the region, and the regional park. I can't wait to share it with people.
