Lovely location
Nice cottage with lovely views, but it is very dated. Almost like stepping back to the 1980s. Small very old freezer, carpeted kitchen/diner, avocado bathroom suite. Only one shower for 5 people. Host contacted us midweek to ask if things were OK (which I really didn't want to be bothered with), but didn't bother to call us when she found the bags my grand daughter had left behind. We had to call and ask if they were there. She was apparently upset by my comments in the Visitor's Book about the shower, the hard bed in the upstairs bedroom and the dated features. There is no dishwasher.

Clean cottage with beautiful views
Diane was helpful throughout the booking process and on arrival. The cottage was clean and the views were stunning. It was lovely to sit in the garden with a drink of an evening. Unfortunately we had a family emergency so had to leave earlier than planned. The space in the cottage was good and the kitchen was fully equipped for anyone cooking in there. It would have been nice to have a few basics such as tea, coffee and milk on arrival as there is no shop in Gunnerside. Would recommend the Kings Head pub in Gunnerside and Richmond was a lovely place to visit too.

Wonderful family holiday
Fantastic family friendly property in stunning surroundings. No problems at all with the cottage. The views are great- its a very peaceful place. Loved watching the lambs frollick in the fields, and so many pheasants and rabbits around too. We had a wonderful holiday and would definitely recommend the cottage.

Walking holiday
East Roof is a very comfortable well located cottage with lovely views. These can be enjoyed by just sitting in the garden on a sunny day and it’s just a short 10 minute walk down the hill to Gunnerside village where there is a cafe and a friendly community pub. Head uphill for a beautiful walk to the village of Muker and return through the meadows by the river Swale - about 4.5 miles. Go up a track behind the cottage to do an 8 mile circular moors walk with spectacular views. So many beautiful walks to do from the property or drive a bit further to Thwaite and Keld for even more fabulous scenery.

Traditional, homely cottage with stunning views
We couldn’t stop looking out of the windows when we arrived at East Roof. It really is the perfect location for a holiday in the dales. Set beautifully in lovely Swaledale, this thoughtfully converted barn overlooks magnificent scenery, is quiet and peaceful and is also near to lots of pretty villages and places of interest. Diane welcomed us on arrival and made sure we had everything we needed, and checked that all was well during the week. This being our first holiday in North Yorkshire we wanted to fit in as much as we could. We visited Fountains Abbey, Wensleydale Creamary, RHS gardens Harlow Carr, waterfalls, towns and the highest pub in England, and we enjoyed returning to East Roof each evening. A lovely holiday enjoyed by all four of us.

An absolutely fantastic cottage in a beautiful location with the most stunning views of Swaledale that you can possibly imagine! This cottage had everything we needed for a very relaxing break and the owner, Diane, was keen to check that we were happy throughout our stay. Highly recommended and we will most certainly be back!

Lovely cottage for our family and dog. Beautiful location, close to walks and pub (although pub was shut when we went but is re-opening in early Nov 2019). Close to nice walks, especially Gunnerside Gill. Enclosed garden for dog was perfect. Thanks

sheer delight of staying at east roof
Our usual place to stay in the village wasn't available so we were forced out of our comfort zone, thank goodness we found East Roof, same village but on a quieter road, very peaceful, beautiful uncluttered views, much cleaner and more thoughtfully equipped than the other property, orderly, neat and not over fussy with the ornaments etc.. .lovely fluffy towels in a warm airing cupboard, and a bath which filled very quickly with masses of hot water, for people with only a shower at home this was bliss! Also we have several bikes so were very relieved to find there was ample secure space for them with plenty of room for doing maintenance inside. So...99.99999% perfect, I know it may seem petty but it could've done with a non stick frying pan , no matter what we did we couldn't get a decent fry up so gave up, but saying that , experience has taught us that non stick pans in holiday lets get trashed almost instantly so its best to take your own anyway, we forgot this time! So all in all a great place to stay Diane is very pleasant to deal with, she's naturally a very hospitable thoughtful person, going the extra distance all the time for instance we got homemade biscuits on arrival , and also there's an emergency mobile phone on a network that works in the dales with her number in if needed.( ours don't work in Swaledale so this really made an impression on us)) Now I've written this it'll never be free to rent again, doh!

Superbly located and beautifully appointed accomodation with a stunning view!
It was a pleasure to be welcomed in person by Diane and to stay in such an utterly delightful accommodation with glorious views over the Swale valley. The area is a walkers paradise and full of local interest and excellent pubs. The cottage was beautifully equipped with every home from home amenity and excellent WiFi. It is a wonderfully quiet location but with lovely walks from the doorstep and a pub just a short stroll down the hill. We did one day open the front door to find a cow on the drive! But it just ambled off up the hillside most amiably. The village fish and chip van on a Friday night was a popular event and the fare very tasty. I would highly recommend this area to those who enjoy country walks and views. Food shopping is available a relatively short drive away. For those like us who visit with a pet dog, the enclosed back garden is ideal. A truly charming cottage. Thank you to Diane for making our stay so pleasant and for the scrumptious home made biscuits which were much enjoyed and greatly appreciated.

Peace and quiet. Yes!!!
East Roof was everything we could have asked for - very peaceful and quiet, warm, cosy, comfortable, spacious, very clean and well maintained. Gorgeous views with somewhere to sit to enjoy them and wildlife on the doorstep. It was great having a welcome from Diane and being shown round and how things worked. Everything we needed and more was provided with plenty of hot water too! The cottage is in a great area for walking and exploring and the village has a decent pub and a couple of tea rooms. Would recommend the bistro for Sunday lunch. Lots of surrounding villages also have excellent tea rooms and pubs - Muker tea room cream tea is very generous and the Black Bull in Reeth do a good Sunday carvery. I highly recommend this cottage to others.

Homely and peaceful
Very helpful and understanding owner - assisted us all the way - lovely touch of home made biscuits on arrival. The house is well equipped. Very peaceful and child friendly - 4 children age 6-9 years old. Good outdoor fun. Beautiful area to walk in - we all went on a bear hunt (parent will understand the book reference). The beds were very comfortable, we all slept well. The kitchen held up with us staying in and cooking a variety of meals for 6 people. A truly amazing area to stay - James Herriot countryside. It was the best holiday that we have ever had. Partly due to the area but also the house was a home for a week which enabled us to relax and enjoy the time away together. Thank you so much for the accommodation and kindness.

About the host

Host profile image
My parents came to farm at Gunnerside in 1965. They decided to diversify in 1990 and converted one of our barns into a self contained holiday cottage. East Roof as it was named became a home from home from then on. Many of our guests still return today bringing with them their children and grandchildren.
When my parents retired, my husband, two daughters and I took over the running of East Roof. We live near Richmond and return each week to clean and maintain the cottage.
I love to come back to East Roof and the area where I grew up, the view across the dale never changes apart from the effect the seasons have upon it.

Why they chose this property

The property has been in my family for over 50 years.

What makes this property unique

The best part of the cottage is its peaceful location, with stunning views from every window and walks from the door step. With the popular village of Gunnerside only a five minutes walk away with its café and pub both serving good food.
