Great Escape
This was partly a holiday and partly us checking out the area to run a future Birdwatching Holiday through our business, Experience nature ltd. The properties location is superb, snuggled into the hillside, with stunning views across the loch to the Torridon Mountain range. We had regular visits from a Pine Marten and views from the cottage of White-tailed Eagle, Osprey, Otter, Common Dolphins, Seals and various bird species. Despite it's remote location, we were only 30 minutes drive from Applecross, and Shieldaig, which have some lovely eateries. The cottage itself had everything we needed, was very comfortable and owner Mark couldn't do enough to make us welcome and provided us with more than enough information on the surrounding area. We even took advantage on one afternoon of the use of his rowing boat, moored on a nearby secluded loch. We didn't see a single person for the 4 hours we were there, perfect. Can't recommend this area enough for a peaceful, wildlife rich get away and the cottage it's self as a great base to do so. Ashley & Wendy

Every Room with a Beautiful View
Vindolanda is a stylish crofters cottage that has been thoughtfully and comfortably renovated. It is well equipped and has everything you need. We loved that each room has a fantastic view over the loch and the mountains. Also, it is great for two couples as it has two similar sized stylish bedrooms. The bathroom has a super shower and bath. We appreciated all the small touches that made this a very comfortable and relaxing stay. Mark supplied lots of information beforehand and was also available for any queries about the area. This is a place for peace, tranquility and relaxation as well as a chance for hill and beach walks and spectacular drives to the local villages.

Consigliato a tutti. A cosy cottage with breathtaking views
Vindolanda is a warm, beautifully furnished and well equipped cottage situated in a tranquil location with ever changing and stunning views. Mark was a fabulous host and we felt that we were very special guests welcomed into his home rather than strangers renting his house. There is a special quality to the tranquility here which makes it impossible not to relax. This part of the West Coast is achingly beautiful and everyone we met was so friendly. There are so many beautiful and unspoiled places to visit in this area and, I promise you, you will never tire of the views of the lochs and mountains.

Otter spotting from the sitting room!
We stayed in Vindolanda Cottage in May 2014. The cottage is really comfortable and Mark kindly left plenty of coal so we had the fire on most evenings - not because it was cold; only because we love an open fire. There aren't many places in the world that you can sit in the siting room and watch a sea otter frolicking in the water only a couple of hundred yards away. One evening we had a BBQ in the cove on the shores of Torridon that is less than a 5 minute walk from the cottage. Mark was wonderful and nothing was too much trouble. And you can get fabulous langoustines and hot smoked salmon about a mile away from the cottage at McIver Shellfish/Applecross Smokehouse.. What a fabulous place to get away from it all. I can't wait to go back to Vindolanda.

A peaceful escape
What a fantastic cottage vindolanda is, it is warm, cosy and extremely comfortable with everything you could possibly need for a break in this beautiful location. You can sit and enjoy the ever changing views and moods of the loch and mountains. When we stayed there we enjoyed the very pretty bay all to ourselves apart from the wildlife, which included white tailed eagles, buzzards, seals, dolphins and of course the family of otters. It is great to go exploring the rock pools at low tide and wandering around on the peninsula getting yourself lost in the fantastic views. There are also many walks that can be explored from the cottage. The cottage is also ideally situated for exploring the Torridan Applecross peninsula. We can't wait to return.

I live in Applecross at the south end of the Peninsula, in Applecross Manse, just beside Camusterrach Pier, which was formerly a stopping point for the MacBrayne's ferry which serviced Applecross and the Hebrides. Now the famous Beallach nan Ba road over the mountains is the main artery.

I have a croft which I use for managing my herd of Highland cattle. The cows for the most part calf on the croft from mid-May, but, to the delight of tourists, they wander the hills and are seen wandering readily. Once a year they walk to Applecross Estate and provide a rare photo opportunity as cows and weeks-old calves plunge into the Applecross River and swim to the Estate on the other side. There is a bridge but they refuse to cross it!

Why they chose this property

I built the cottage on the site of Roddy's Byre an elevated position in the hamlet enjoying expansive views out to the sea and to the mountains. It is interesting to look at the photograph of the byre when it was first constructed and see Roddy's Uncle Farquar beaming a smile of pride and satisfaction and to think of a time not so long ago when life was so very different.

The cottage is built around the views so that you never lose contact with them com the inside.

This part of Applecross has a timeless charm beyond words. It leaves one feeling unshackled from the everyday and staggered by the moods and drama of its surroundings. One is instantly smitten.

What makes this property unique

This is the ideal cottage centred holiday: everything lies on the doorstep, a beach for children, a cove for play and exploration, a wonderful coastline to explore by easy walking, currently with a family of Otter in residence, a wide variety of singing birdlife including a visiting White tTailed Eagle, and pods of Porpoise and Dolphin, not to mention the Otter, to be spotted in the sea.

You can fish from the rocks. We have visitors who enjoy diving in the exceptional water with its 35m underwater visibility. Beach BBQ and picnic lunches are a favourite.

Outside, life is fun, interesting and relaxing.

Inside, the cottage provides all levels of modern comfort in a setting of peace and scenic beauty.
