There are no adjacent houses less than 150 years old. The barn is situated in an elevated position on a spur of granite overlooking Ambleside, with only the sound of the the nearby Stock Ghyll Beck to disturb the peace at night. It is located in the Ambleside Conservation Area and is on the Ambleside Heritage Trail. There is virtually no passing traffic and it is only a few minutes walk down ancient lanes to the centre of town. Ambleside is at the centre of The Lake District National Park and surrounded by mountains on three sides, with the head of England's longest lake on the fourth. It is the hub for all adventure sports - fell walking, road cycling, mountain biking, climbing, fell running, sailing and wild swimming. The town has c.20 outdoor equipment/clothing retailers and many bookshops, restaurants, galleries, gift shops and coffee/tea shops.

Charming, well equipped and stylish

This is a lovely stay in Ambleside, just minutes walk from the town centre. It is very well located for walks and buses. The accomodation itself is very comfortable, with well equipped kitchen and nice sitting areas. We appreciated especially all the guides and maps available. Robin our host was a.pleasure to deal with and we enjoyed meeting him. Thank you and recommended.

This historic building has all the character and charm you could wish for while also having all the necessary modern amenities. And it is indeed larger than it appears in pictures! Robin is a wonderful host, and the location is perfect for taking in the incredible beauty of the Lake District.

Great time had by all

This is a great place to stay for walking / sightseeing around Ambleside and surrounding area. A very clean property with everything you need at hand. Robin is an excellent host. He greets you on arrival then leaves you to it, but always on hand if you have a problem or need recommendations for anything from places to eat or hills to walk. We shall certainly be back to this lovely gem of a place.

Perfect for a couple staying in Ambleside

This is a perfect flat for a couple staying in Ambleside. The property is a very short walk from the centre of Ambleside and all the wonderful amenities the town has to offer. The flat benefits from off-road parking and has all the facilities one could want - TV, DVD player, WiFi, fully equipped kitchen, and a very comfortable armchair. Robin is a very friendly host and went out of his way to make sure we were settled and enjoying our stay. I can't recommend this flat (and Robin) highly enough. If the flat is available, we'll be back next time we come to Ambleside.

Little gem

First i would like to thank robin for his warm welcome, when we arrived. We stayed in the self catering apartment which was perfect for our 4 night getaway .The apartment is full of robins unique touches and eye for detail. Well equipped kitchen ,spotlessly clean throughout .Plenty big enough for two people. The cottage is well placed ,homely ,cosy, pleasant location just 2 minutes from the centre of Ambleside, but away from the hustle and bustle perfect for a relaxing evening ,after a full day exploring .Big thanks to robin for sharing his home, could not ask for more, well maybe one of your highly rated cooked breakfasts. Hope to to see you again soon. Jane and Dave

Perfect Getaway

We spent four nights at Robin's cottage and found it to be the perfect getaway. The cottage is to an excellent standard with heated flooring in the kitchen and shower room coming in extremely handy after a day of walking in the area. The living / dining space is really cosy with the log burner being a great spot to kick back and enjoy a glass of wine. The cottage is right on the doorstep of Ambleside with its lovely restaurants, pubs and cinema and proved to be a superb base for walking. Robin was the kind of host we like, being really friendly and informative without us being obtrusive. We wouldn't hesitate in booking the cottage.

A wonderful place to stay

We had a long weekend at Robin's cottage and can't praise the cottage enough. It's packed with character and is high spec with heated flooring and the best shower we've had at a property - a must after a long day out on the hills. The space is much bigger and better than the photos, with a roomy entrance, cosy sitting and dining area (we loved the log burner), large fully equipped kitchen and a good size bedroom with cupboard space. The cottage is only five minutes walk from Ambleside and all it has to offer and a great base for walking. Robin was the perfect host and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

Excellent location, clean and quiet accommodation.

We had a very enjoyable stay, helped by wonderful weather. The location of the property means that you do not need the car to access walks nor to look round and eat out in Ambleside. We have stayed in self-catering properties for over forty years in the Lake District. My only criticisms are: I was disappointed that use of a washing machine was not included in the cost of staying here and we are used to having towels provided.

Comfortable, well equipped great for peaceful break

Great location for first visit to Lake District, quiet and peaceful but close enough to town which had lovely restaurants. Host Robin able to give plenty information/advice and accommodation had abundance of local leaflets and literature. Very comfortable, quaint, clean and well cared for plus a cosy log burner. Just a pity only away for three nights.

A great place to stay!

We had a wonderful time in the Lake District. Especially because of the hospitality of our host. And thanks to the very comfortable and clean apartment, with its king size bed with excellent mattress, the stove in the living room, the properly equipped kitchen. The apartment has its own parking place. We recommend the How Head Barn to every one!

Simply wonderful

We had a perfect week in such a beautiful, cosy and well equipped 'cottage'. Robin was a fantastic host and was so helpful, warm and friendly. The new bathroom and kitchen were lovely and had everything we could possibly need. Typical Lakes weather resulted in snuggled evenings in front of a roaring wood burner. On sunnier days we sat reading on a bench at the front and enjoyed the sound of silence. I can't recommend this place highly enough. We will be back.

Fantastic location, wonderful cottage

We had a fantastic stay at How Head Barn and missing the Lake District already! We stayed in the How Head self catering flat which was wonderful. The flat is newly refurbished to a high standard, all the amenities you could want, lovely sitting area in evening with big arm chairs, wood burner (imagine this will be fantastic in the winter) and a brand new power shower/wet room (important after a day in the mountains!). We found Ambleside the perfect base for our hiking holiday, only a short drive to all the big mountains (e.g. Helvelyn 15 min drive, Scarfell 45 mins (to Seathwaite), Langdale Pikes and Old Man Consiton 20 mins drive and there are of course many more), you can even do the Fairfield horseshoe hike from the door of the flat (we will have to do this next time!). The flat itself is a great location as it is tucked away on a quiet hill in Ambleside but only a couple of minutes walk to the nearest supermarket, shops and pub. We were very well looked after - Robin was a brilliant host and gave us lots of tips for walks in the area. Would highly recommend How Head and we will definitely be back in the future!

Host profile image
Having spent the last 30 years living and working in London, I moved up to The Lake District National Park in 2014. I love the great outdoors, fell walking, camping, wildlife and music festivals. I am passionate about protecting wild places and consider 'The Lakes' to be one of the very best places to live in the whole of the UK.

Why they chose this property

300 yrs old stone built, Grade 2 listed Lakeland barn overlooking Ambleside, located in the oldest part of town.
The ground floor Self Catering apartment has a kingsize bed & an occasional sofa bed, wood burning stove, partial underfloor heating, wet room/wc, kitchen, lounge & full central heating. Off street private parking at the door and mountain views.
Ambleside is located at the heart of The Lake District National Park and is the main hub for everything to do with 'the great outdoors' - fell walking, cycling, running, mountain biking, wild swimming, sailing & rock climbing.
There is every grade of walking available, from low level paths and tracks to classic mountain walks.

What makes this property unique

It is quiet up here due to hardly any through traffic, yet the centre of Ambleside is only a 2 minute walk down ancient lanes. We have our own private off street car parking at the door with secure cycle storage and access to a washing machine (£10 per load).
The barn is one of the oldest residential buildings in Ambleside and is situated on a spur of granite occupied by the first settlers here over 1,000 years ago.
We have detailed knowledge of fell walking in the area, and love suggesting places to walk, camp, run, cycle, or simply to go for an evening stroll - including coffee shops, bookshops, restaurants and the c.20 outdoor equipment and clothing retailers here in Ambleside. We can also advise on where to see the best wildlife and how to prepare for the Lake District weather! Accompanied walking is available at additional cost, as well as guided driving tours.
