About this property

Enchanting Grade II listed,Log Burner, allocated parking, town centre but secluded

Perfectly located Romantic Grade II listed cottage in arguably the prettiest chocolate box town in the Cotswolds, Our reviews reflect the fantastic location of the cottage in proximity to local eateries, hikes, and amenities. Bourton On The Water ‘Little Venice’. Captain's Cabin. It has one allocated parking space for a mid sized car directly in front of the cottage. Check in time 3pm and check out 10am. Minimum 3 night stay (unless 2 night available in between existing bookings)and maximum 7 -10 nights (enquire if you need more) as no washing machine in the property. Due to the size of the cottage , one small adult well behaved dog allowed downstairs only and not on furniture - please always check first if bringing a pet . Tassimo coffee maker and retro Bluetooth radio plus Smart TV . You will need your own passwords for apps such as Netflix. Bourton is around 40 minutes from Oxford and is centrally located for visiting other Cotswold villages such as Chipping Norton, Burford, The Slaughters,Chipping Camden, Moreton in Marsh and Broadway. Restaurants or pubs that are within 5 minute walks are Venezia Italian restaurant (our favourite) , ‘Smiths’ which is a burger and cocktails brasserie, ‘The Willow’ which is a traditional pub, ‘The Croft’,which is a restaurant, ‘The Mousetrap’ which is a boutique pub or ‘L’anatra’ serving traditional pizza. There are many more including Chinese takeaway, Indian takeaway,Fish and Chips takeaway to name a few!.This cosy cottage boasts plenty of traditional charm with characteristic features. Set on three floors the property has exposed beams , reclaimed and restored oak flooring downstairs with huge inglenook fireplace, logs provided for one fire during winter months only, guests can purchase additional logs, kindling and firelighters from Londis supermarket, a 2 minute walk away.Exposed honey coloured Cotswold stone walls but with on demand central heating and dual fuel traditional log burner for those cosy evenings . NOTE: There are two low beams downstairs . One central beam on the ground floor height being 5'7 which is the lowest beam in the cottage. Full free internet access (around maximum 10mbps), with all amenities and dining table and chairs for three. The table will be folded in between stays to maximise space. Ground floor houses main living area and kitchen. Steep stairs with rope banisters lead to first floor which has a very pretty and romantic double bedroom which has a Grade II status stone mullion window as center piece and good size full height triple cupboard. Also on first floor is a modern bathroom housing bath, shower over bath, dual towel rail radiator and vanity units with touch free LED mirror, electric razor point to tge side of LED mirror, basin & toilet. 2nd floor with steep stairs (but with rbanisters) takes you to the single bedroom which has views over the rooftops and rolling hills beyond. Window seat cushions throughout. There is a patio area to the front with seating for two which is a sunspot each afternoon in the Summer months or al fresco dining. To the back of the property you can access footpaths via a pretty lane and historic church graveyard. The footpaths can take you to the Slaughters which are particulaly beautiful.Town center is at the end of the drive! where you can picnic along the River Windrush in the Summer months or have a cream tea in one of the many quaint tea shops or even a pastie from a boutique pastie shop . Several restaurants offer a mixture of cuisine all within less than 2 minutes walk. Despite the bustle of the town all you can hear is the birds as you relax with a hot drink or glass of champagne in the courtyard. Many of our guests have commented on the fact the cottage is secluded but is a few steps away from the town center. Check out the history of Captains Cabin, deeds date from 1663, check out English Heritage from search engines to find out more about this and the adjoining set of quaint cottages , part of which is said dates back to medieval times. Parts of Bourton were a Saxon settlement and mentioned in the Doomsday Book. Property is set over 57 sq m or 613 sq feet.

Beautiful cottage in wonderful location
Cosy, well equipped cottage only a stone throws away from the Main Street. Beautifully furnished. Only one negative is that the 2nd single bedroom is up a very, tight spiral staircase - great care needed when descending.

Excellent location close to centre of town and walking tracks but tucked away from “hustle and bustle”. You can hear the bells from the church which adds to the overall atmosphere. Peter is an excellent host, and very prompt to respond to any queries. The welcoming bottle of milk and wine was appreciated after a long day of travel. Would definitely stay again if we ever have the opportunity.

Very pretty Cotswold's charm.
A very charming traditional Cotswold's cottage. We loved the proximity to the beautiful town and its restaurants, the small supermarket and the laundromat. It made it so easy to explore Bourton-on-the-water early in the morning before the day trippers arrived. The cottage had great amenities and the layout was surprisingly spacious. We would definitely stay again.

Cute
Excellent location for exploring the Cotswolds. Cottage is set back off the main high street and very quiet. It is very small but was fine for the two of us and our dog. If I’m really honest I feel you would be pushed to have more than 2 adults staying or anyone with poor mobility as the stairs are very steep. The property was clean, comfortable bed but personally I feel it needs a bit of tlc in regard to the misted windows and soft furnishings. However, we had a fabulous time and communication with the owner was superb.

Perfect Stay, Perfect Location
My husband and I have just spent a wonderful weekend at The Captain's Cabin. The cottage was just perfect & beautiful inside, we arrived late in the evening and opening the door to a warm & cosy cottage was heaven. It has all you'd need for your stay, fully equipped kitchen. The bed was so comfortable and luxury bathroom towels, truly no need to take anything. We loved the real fire and delighted lighting it at the end of each day. It's the perfect location for walking or sightseeing at the Cotswolds. We saw lovely villages on our trips out and of course, the purpose for our weekend a meal at The Farmers Dog & a visit to the Hawkstone brewery. Our only feedback comments: no tea towells but we're sure just an oversight and wasn't an issue as we didn't eat in once. A neighbour had also parked in our spot at the cottage, but when when we knocked and explained, they were very kind and moved immediately, not a problem. Thank you for your hospitality Peter. We'd definitely book again.

Absolutely the perfect cottage in a great location
Just a lovely little cottage as advertised, in a super convenient location. Everything was available within a short walk from the cottage. It served as a great base from which to explore other nearby villages and attractions, some even within walking distance using the trail whose access was literally behind the cottage. The host was very responsive to the very few questions we had. Luckily it was also cool enough to take advantage of the wonderful wood burner. All in all, we're real happy with how everything went!

a home away from home!
We absolutely loved staying in the Captain's Cabin. Bourton on the Water is in a great location for day trips, but we had to pull ourselves away from this adorable and bustling little village. Location of the Captain's Cabin is quiet and peaceful, but just a two minute walk to all that Bourton on the Water has to offer! We loved ending our days cuddling up by the fire and had the best sleep in the charming and comfortable bedroom.

Our wonderful stay at the Captains Cabin
We really enjoyed a lovely stay at the Captains Cabin, it's a beautiful little cottage (mind your head!!) in a lovely peaceful spot and yet it is only minutes walk from the centre of the very picturesque Bourton on the Water. The village is a lovely spot with lots of choices to eat and drink while enjoying the beauty of the river. The cottage itself has everything that you could want and need, it is a very well designed and well equipped small space. You couldn't ask for anything more if you are looking to enjoy a stay in the Cotswolds. We would highly recommend a visit and would love to go back.

We still rent again!
We loved Bourton-on-the-Water. Neither myself or my friend are tall but if we were getting up stairs and missing the main beam in living area would have been troublesome. While the website said stairs were trying, it was not noted that there’s two sets, one as difficult as the other. Tho there was construction going on next door, the workmen were polite and our neighbors were delightful!

A really cozy historical cottage with all the modern amenities. And the most incredible thing is that it is so close to the commercial center of town, yet it really is amazingly quiet — the perfect blend for a countryside getaway. The host was very helpful, communicated easily and helped immediately when I had a question.

Gorgeous quaint cottage in a fabulous village, parking to the front and right in the centre, easy access to everything. The cottage was clean, cosy, warm and well presented with comfy beds. About the host

Hosted by Peter Brand

Host profile image
I purchased this property in April 2014 as a future retirement property for my wife and I at some point in the future. The cottage was renovated using local specialised builders to ensure the building is in keeping with it's character. I want to ensure that the cottage can be a haven for couples or walkers or those with a young child and that it has all the essentials needed for a worry free, enjoyable time away from work.

Why they chose this property

This town is my wife's favourite town in the Cotswolds (hence our 'joint' decision to purchase a holiday home here). The cottage is so well situated which is another reason we appreciate the proximity to Bourton but also the sun trap courtyard. Even our cleaner sometimes eats her lunch there and cant tear herself away! Despite Bourton being busy in the Summer months, the cottage offers a secluded (and quiet) place to relax and enjoy. We immediately fell in love with the property and have renovated it appropriately sourcing as much as we could locally and using local tradespeople. An evening meal can be enjoyed in Bourton and you can be back in the cottage within a couple of minutes without the need for a car which we also love. What a shame we have to work so don't get to enjoy it enough - roll on retirement!

What makes this property unique

We think the property is arguably set in one of the best locations in the village. Set just behind the shops and a couple of other cottages and a PARKING space directly in front of the cottage which is sometimes difficult to source in one of the most popular towns in the Cotswolds. I don't think I have ever seen such a large inglenook fireplace in other cottages which is an amazing feature and the 1st floor bedroom with its beams and cream cupboards and honey exposed stone is really nice to wake up to each morning. Directly behind the cottage you can access public footpaths to Lower Slaughter or beyond. What makes Captains Cabin unique is its comfy seating and cosy atmosphere. It is simply very enchanting and many guests are sad to leave after their stay. Steeped in history the cottage is part of a small group that dates back to medieval times. Captains Cabin is the only cottage in the row that hasn't had additions or major alterations . The mullion window to the front of the property gives it the Grade II status and is a focal point in the double bedroom.
