About this property

Charming renovated bakehouse near Daglan, Perigord Noir

Le Fournil at Le Clos du Comte was originally built as the bakehouse for the hamlet of Mas de Cause, about 2 km above the village of Daglan, and was subsequently extended to become a home. It has now been tastefully renovated to create a charming and characterful 2 bedroom cottage, still with the original bread oven, but with all the modern conveniences you expect.

Downstairs, the accommodation comprises a large open-plan living/dining room with a brand-new fully-fitted kitchen. Next to the living room, what was once a pigsty has been extended to create a double bedroom with a king-size (150 cm) bed, plus an en-suite bathroom (shower, basin and toilet). Upstairs, there is a very pretty, spacious bedroom with pine-panelled ceiling, two single beds and another large en-suite bathroom. The cottage is ideally suited to 2 couples or a couple with children. Guest comfort is one of our most important priorities: most of the furniture is new - but solid oak in keeping with the character and age of the home - mattresses are high-quality, towels are fluffy Egyptian cotton. Heating in the cooler months is provided by electric radiators, and there are heated towel rails in both bathrooms.

On one side, the cottage looks out over a peaceful grove of walnut trees. On the other side, there is a delightful little orchard of plum trees, with an original stone-built chicken house. At the back there is a gravelled terrace with table and chairs, which then gives on to a forested area.

The gorgeous pool, shared with our other gite, is 12m x 5m and has a built-in seat at one end where you can laze in the water on those hot summer days. It's surrounded by plenty of chairs and loungers and beautiful landscaping, heated to 26C in summer and cleaned daily for your enjoyment.

The estate of Le Clos du Comte is truly idyllic. It sits on 18 hectares (approximately 45 acres) of unspoiled, utterly tranquil forest and pasture. Almost the only sounds you’ll hear are birdsong, or the chirping of the crickets on a summer’s day. Almost the only light you’ll see at night will come from the moon or the stars. It’s a nature lover and stargazer’s paradise, with an abundance of wildlife.

Activities are too numerous to mention. Locally, Daglan is a very pretty village, with a small supermarket, a bakery, and a variety of artisanal shops and activities. The village is becoming quite the artistic colony, with the recent addition of a sculptor. The church is worth a visit, and there is a market on Sunday mornings.

Within 10 km, there are the chateaux of Castelnaud, with its military museum, Beynac, La Roque Gageac, Milandes (once home to the American-born dancer and singer Josephine Baker), and Marqueyssac, with its hanging gardens of topiary. The village of Domme has wonderful views over the river Dordogne. The medieval town of Sarlat-la-Caneda, 22 km away, has been beautifully restored and much of it is pedestrian only. A bit further afield, there are the caves at Lascaux with their prehistoric wall paintings, the town of Rocamadour, which clings to the cliffs overhanging the Dordogne, and the village of Collonges-la-Rouge, so named for its buildings of deep red stone.
If you’re feeling energetic, you can swim in the warm pool or in our local river, the Céou, walk through the estate or across the hills, play tennis in the village, canoe on the Dordogne, go horse riding or fishing, or play golf on one of several local courses. Hot air ballooning is a popular activity, and we frequently see balloons floating over on calm evenings. If you’re feeling lazy, you can read a book in the peace and shade of one of the walnut groves.

There are plenty of places to eat out, with 2 restaurants in the village (La Cantine and the more upmarket Petit Paris), a pizzeria in St Cybranet, and a wonderful restaurant – a secret which we only reveal to guests! – a 10 minute drive away.

The estate teems with wildlife year-round. In September and October, during and after rutting season, the red deer stags converge in the walnut groves with their harems to battle it out and, when the fighting is over, to graze. Roe deer can be seen any time – and frequently make a nuisance of themselves in the garden! The wild boar are most visible on winter evenings, when they’ll emerge from the forest to eat any walnuts missed by the harvest. Spring and summer are the time for birds. Our resident kestrels have returned to nest in our bedroom wall for the seventh year running. The smaller birds such as black redstarts and blue tits make their nests in every nook and cranny. In summer, the hawks soar on the thermals, and we see or hear blackbirds, robins, cuckoos, hoopoes, owls, woodpeckers, finches, nuthatches, wrens …… I could go on. In spring and autumn, we’re right under the migration route of the cranes. And there are butterflies everywhere.

The local region is known for its wealth of history, and Le Clos du Comte has its own history, too. During renovation work, we’ve found fossilised figs and a boar tusk. The land has clearly been worked for millennia – we’ve also dug up a variety of prehistoric stone tools. Our own farmhouse, which dates from before the French Revolution, was originally a convent with its own chapel. At some point, the property became a farm, producing wine; it stayed that way for centuries, and our reception is in the original winery. During World War II, the wine became the subject of dispute between the occupiers and the Resistance, the then-owners fled, and the forests were taken over by the Maquis. Nowadays, the land is altogether more peaceful, producing walnuts and hay.

We know that we are privileged to live in such a fabulous place, and we love to share its peace and beauty. Come and see for yourselves, and we hope you’ll agree that Le Clos du Comte is truly wonderful!

A beautiful gite in an ideal situation for exploring the Dordogne

We had a wonderful week's stay at this lovely property. It is well equipped and provided everything we needed. We particularly appreciated the quality of the bed and bed linen, which was certainly a cut above your average holiday rental property, in our experience. The pool is a bonus and kept immaculately clean. The immediate surrounding area is beautiful and many of the Dordogne's wonderful towns, castles and chateaux are within very easy reach. Steve and Elizabeth are ideal hosts, friendly and knowledgeable bout the area.

Very enjoyable and relaxing stay

Great property with lots of character and good facilities, deep in the heart of the French countryside but also within easy driving distance of the picturesque Daglan village and its amenities. We thoroughly enjoyed the pool! Very welcoming owners who were genuinely concerned that all was well and who offered many recommendations for places to visit and eat. We have hardly scratched the surface of all the things to do in a week’s stay! Many thanks for your hospitality Elizabeth and Steve!

Fantastic stay

The house is located on a fantastically beautiful and spacious estate. Ideal for people who love peace. It is also a very comfortable home in the colder period. Spacious living room, good beds and a well-equipped kitchen. The area around Daglan is very beautiful with many beautiful towns and villages. We were there over Christmas and New Year. During that period you have to take into account that many restaurants are closed, but fortunately there is still plenty of choice left. Elizabeth and Steve are delightful hosts. Without being intrusive, there is always a moment of contact to imform if everything is going well. Highly recommended.

A Fabulous Fortnight!

We had a wonderful, relaxing fortnight here. The property is beautiful and the pool is amazing....so big! The kids loved it! The house is well equipped and the surroundings are exceptional, so quiet with beautiful trees and woodland. The perfect mix of rural peace but only a ten minute drive from many of the Dordogne's most famous spots. Cannot recommend this place highly enough, truly brilliant.

A lovely gite and great environment. It was unusually hot even for the Dordogne. More fans if not air conditioning would have helped but a really good place to stay.

Fabulous property, thoughtful and helpful hosts

We loved everything about our stay. The property was just as described, and super easy to find with Liz's helpful directions, but the photos/descriptions just don't do justice to the truly beautiful setting, the joy of seeing deer in the meadow in the morning, and all the little details that add up to a very special experience. Steve and Liz were extremely helpful and thoughtful hosts, providing plenty of recommendations and suggestions, making thoughtful gestures (such as bringing over a huge selection of DVDs when we had a spell of poor weather), as well as being generally good company. We would definitely stay here again.

Perfect stay!

We had a wonderful & very relaxing stay - it's a delightful historic and interesting property finished to a very high quality level. Spotlessly clean, way beyond anywhere we’ve stayed before. Just over all high standards even down to The White Company bathroom towels! The hosts are incredibly welcoming and warm. We loved our morning chats, they were so obliging...able to help us in understanding the local area, finding the best restaurants (even booking us a highly sought after table in August!) and making a vet appointment for our dog. Nothing was any trouble- all done in their casual and under the radar manner. The pool area is large and well kept, beautiful planting surrounds with a great amount of space. Heaven! The property is just a couple of minutes drive from the very picturesque village of Daglan and you can have the most relaxing of holidays hardly leaving that area! Quaint little streets for a stroll, friendly and great quality restaurants and an excellent boulangerie to add the holiday weight!! Definitely hope we get to come back another time. It was a pleasure to stay and a pleasure to meet our hosts.

A little piece of Paradise

It was our first visit to the Dordogne and we were not disappointed! The property was very clean and well equipped with everything you could want or need - bbq, microwave, dishwasher, decent size fridge, washing machine, comfy beds, fantastic shower, british tv channels... the list goes on. It was surrounded by beautiful countryside and so peaceful. The patio area of the gite was private, peaceful with a very nice dining table, bbq and another separate comfy seating area. The owners Liz and Steve are very friendly, helpful and work so hard keeping everything so nice. The pool was large and cleaned everyday with plenty of sunloungers and chairs. The gite was a labour of love for the owners who had put so much thought into the renovation. They have kept original features such as beams and pizza ovens and have managed to mix old and new features very effectively. The bathrooms were very clean and modern - the showers worked fantastically (if there is one hate I have is a poor shower!) Liz and Steve were a lovely couple who gave plenty of recommendations on local things to do which was really great. There is another larger gite that is rented out within the grounds but its away from the gite we rented and didn't hear or rarely saw the other people. The property is situated just a 2 minute drive outside of a very beautiful village of Domme, it is very easy to get to all the castles and other beautiful villages in the area also. We had a fabulous stay and will definitely return !!!!

The property was spotlessly clean, and full of charm

Our experience in the property was blissful. It was well equipped with all mod cons. The outside space was well thought out, with a BBQ area and a private and a peaceful sitting area. The pool was large, with plenty of recliners, so no need for towels on seats! Liz and Steve (owners) were lovely, helpful and friendly and we hope to return very soon, when they open again for the season. Hopefully they will not be fully booked after this review. A truly wonderful place, thanks Liz and Steve.

A beautiful gite in a lovely tranquil setting

We stayed for a week at the end of August. It is a beautifully converted property in a lovely rural location, very quiet and peaceful with lovely views. The property is part of an old farm estate, with the owners in the main house nearby. The village of Daglan is close by, very picturesque with a bakery, shop, restaurants and a Sunday market. Great place for morning coffee. Steve and Elizabeth are perfect and interesting hosts with lots of local knowledge which was great help to us. They made sure that everything was good for us for our stay. We plan to return!

Loved this place !

After one week spent in Daglan, we would thoroughly recommend this gîte . It’s been beautifully renovated , well equipped ( white fluffy towels and sharp knives ...a rarity in holiday rentals !) and spotlessly clean. We loved the house , the pool and all the space to explore. Daglan is a 2 minute drive away ( or a steep walk - not for the faint hearted!) , a lovely rural village with a shop, restaurants, Sunday market selling the juiciest tomatoes ever , small arty shops ...there’s also acces to the river where you can picnic and swim . Loads of amazing places to visit within half an hour or less in the car . Elizabeth and Steve made us feel very welcome and the children were fascinated with the history of the house and surroundings . Felt thoroughly chilled out after our holiday . Thank you once again !

Stunning, well presented, well equiped high standard accommodation. Nothing more we can say

Awesome. Had an absolutely fantastic time. The property is located in an idyllic tranquil location with good access to all the sights, the local village and its amenities. The presentation, fixtures and fittings of the property are top notch. There was nothing overlooked that we needed. The pool is fabulous, really clean and a good size. Steve and Liz were very accommodating and helpful. If you get the chance take Steve's offer of a tour of the property up. He showed us the estate which was very interesting and informative. Steve's stories of what went on in the past were a real eye opener. If you spot the squirrel, make sure you hide your nuts! There is a good chance you will see some of the wildlife even as you lounge by the pool. 8 to huit, the local supermarket had a special offer on Marmite. The squirrel doesn't like it! He prefers Nutella! Big thanks for providing a great place for our wonderful holiday. Loved it!

Gorgeous property, amazing hosts

We had an outstanding stay at this beautiful property in Daglan. It is close to so many amazing sites in the Dordogne, but has so much on offer at the property you never need to leave. The hosts were incredible. Our kids (aged 10 and 12) absolutely loved it- as did we. We were there for over a week but wish we had longer. Highly recommended. Kids thoughts: “everything was amazing! Pool, personal space, lots of play space to run around, great separate bathroom from our parents, and we really loved meeting Steve and Liz- they were very friendly.”
