About this property

Luxury Villa With large Eco-Pool And Magnificent Views of the Alps

Il Ronco is a charming family home set in an idyllic garden on top of a hill and surrounded by forests. On the hill there are 5 more villas, all belonging to the same family and all quite far from each other. We have the best view! over the Parco del Ticino, a protected forest, all the way to the Monte Rosa, the second highest peak in the Alps. The land has been in the family for 5 generations and used to be a hunting reserve with a hunting lodge. The reason why the current owners' parents decided to live there is that it is a very easy commute to Milan where they worked but also to Como where the kids went to school and ideal for great family day trips on the lake. The Swiss border is only about 15 minutes drive from the house and a visit to Lugano is always fun if you are there. There are golf courses, designer clothes outlets, fun water parks and tree top walks to entertain the whole family but we find that we often end up just sitting by the pool, going for a little walk in the woods, playing a game of badminton or hang out on the veranda. The property enjoys a lot of wildife - birds, lizards, dragonflies, hedgehogs, squirrels amongst others.
We do get out of the house to go to one of the fantastic local restaurants for a proper meal or just a nice pizza. The best time of the day is always Martini cocktails time on the veranda at sunset. Different every night, beautiful every night.

Ricky The Gentleman
This beautiful abundant home in a rural location is ideally situated for tourism and relaxation alike. The property is a home, full of character in grounds to be relaxingly taken in and admired. The eco pool is inspirational in that it uses nature to help purify the water for swimming in.The pool is just one area to relax by including BBQ. The ample dining area encourages communal eating and conversation which can be moved to the veranda if/when desired. Spacious well appointed bedrooms with en-suite leaves no one feeling cramped. Ricky maintains the grounds and nothing is too much trouble for him. If help is needed just ask. He is a true friendly gentleman. The lakes are the main tourist attraction and the setting is, without any doubt, sensational. A vehicle is essential and there is ample space to park, our party had three. However, if it is just some rest and relaxation you want then all essentials can be purchased locally. We had a couple of fun family meals around the table. You will enjoy this in its entirety - Ricky you are a gent! Francesca, thank you for all the guidance you gave in advance. The help you gave was invaluable. X

Wonderful stay in the lakes region
The house at Ronco is wonderfully located, easily reached from Milan and close to the magnificent lakes and their many attractions. The property itself is beautiful, very well appointed, in a quiet location with all necessary shopping nearby. The caretaker was super helpful and friendly, and the owner very responsive and pleasant to deal with. We enjoyed every aspect of our stay and would love to have a chance to visit again.

Wonderful location, quiet and a park like property
We had a wonderul time with up to 10 people in the house maximum and changing people with later arrival and earlier departure. We exhibitet at a show in Rho, about 30 minutes from the house and only used the house in the morning and evenings. The house has a wonderful park arround it, quiet ands save and a wonderful 17 meter pool. We really enjoyed the relaxing stay in the hours we were there. The housekeeper Ricky was very helpful and friendly and looked after us. The kitchen furniture needs a little bit of attention. One evening we hired Marco the cook who prepared a 4 course dinner for us in the house. We want to come back and can strongly recommend the house. Thanks Francesca for all the help prior to the arrival. Jo.

Superb stay at a wonderful villa
We were two families from the UK with teenage kids staying at Il Ronco for one week in early August 2022. Having had the opportunity down the years of holidaying at villas in France, Spain, Italy and Greece, Il Ronco is by some distance the loveliest. The villa and its grounds are perfect. The villa is a home rather than a villa whose primary purpose is as a rental. I would thoroughly recommend it for a multitude of reasons, including: - Beautiful grounds - Wonderfully comfortable and homely accommodation - Fantastic pool - Bakery and butcher, three minute walk - Large and extremely well equipped kitchen. With many base condiments. - Brilliant café/bar full of locals, a short walk away. I could go on and on. For us, the location was well positioned to explore the wider area, including Como and Varese … though I had no idea that the Italians were such big fans of roundabouts! Virgilio is employed by the family to look after the home and its grounds. His presence added to our experience. He was completely non-intrusive, though on hand if needed. I recognise that for some people someone on site is not their cup of tea. Hence explicitly flagging it here in my review. Passover considering this villa at your peril.

A wonderful ecperience
We (a family of 8 persons) enjoyed a fantastic week at Ronco. The place is just amazing. We enjoyed the big house with plenty of space for everybody, the stylish interiour made the vacation even better. We did spend more or less the full week staying at the house and enjoyed the big garden and pool area. Can really recommend this place.

Perfect summer stay
This is a perfect spot for a family vacation! First of all the communication with the owner, Francesca, was very good upon arrival. She answered all questions quickly and was very welcoming. All information about the house, arrival, direction etc was sent in good time and very clear and easy to understand. Very easy to find the house, using the desciption provided or Google Maps. Very nice welcome by Virgilio who is taking care of the house. He really made our stay so nice! Always available if we had a question, very discreet, keeping the living room area and garten perfectly clean for us every day. He even came with fresh eggs from his chickens and vegetables from the garden! The house is amazing! Kept in the old style. You can spend a lot of time just exploring the details of the interior and the art. We didn’t use much time inside though as it was during the summer heat wave. Instead we spend a lot of time in and around the pool. The garten is perfect with sun/shadow spots, so you can always find a nice spot to relax, play a game or enjoy a drink. The kitchen it very well equipped - we were especially happy about the ice cube maschine because of the heat wave. We also made some very nice vanilla and strawberry icecream on the icemachine. The surroundings are also nice. A short walk to a nice cafe where we went a few times during the week to have icecream for the kids and coffee and drinks for the adults. The butcher was also very close. We had some very good meat there. Unfortunately the bandet was closed due to vacation but the supermarked with a large assortment of all we needed was only 2 km from the house. A lot of experiences near by. We went to the Alfa Romeo museum and round tour at San Siro stadium. Visited Como including the Silk Museum and rented a boat to sail on the Como Lake. All great experiences! All in all we give Il Ronco, Virgilio and Francesca our warmest recommendations! Best, Tea Norgaard

Great Villa. Very peaceful and relaxing.
We had a great 4 night stay at this incredible villa - we wish we could have stayed longer. We loved the old world charm, history of the home and the entire Ronco complex. I was especially impressed with how well the home we built with all of the fine wood and stone work, and all the storage that was built into the house. Very well designed!! You can tell that Francesca's father was an architect. All the advanced communications with Francesca were great. She answered all our questions and gave us perfect directions to find the villa. Virgillo was great as well. He met us at 5 pm when we arrived and told us all that we needed to know about the villa. He helped us find the nearest grocery store and train station for your excursions into Milan. He and his wife even graciously offered to wash some of our clothes for us which was an unexpected, but much needed treat, as we had been traveling through Europe for 3 weeks. We loved the peaceful surroundings, sitting on the veranda overlooking the well manicured lawn and trees, enjoying some fine Italian wines. It was also a great location for our visits to Milan (by train) and Lake Como (by car). Both very easy. Our only disappointment was not being able to take advantage of the pool and tennis courts, only because of our short stay and desire to see the surrounding area. We will save that for our next visit to Ronco. Thanks again to Francesca and Virgillo.

Italy, weddings and family fun
We had a wonderful family stay at this property. The home is beautiful and lovingly cared for. We had a chef prepared dinner by Marco which was one of the highlights of the trip for us. Virgilio the caretaker was always available to answer any questions we had and made sure we had everything we needed. This home is spacious and full of old world charm. Probably, the only hard thing for us to adjust to were the bathrooms with only a hand held shower in a tub. We are not used to it in our homes so we had a few water cleanups. But we figured it out and carried on. The home is located with easy short drives to lake Lugano and Como and to our nieces wedding in Varese so we were very busy during our time there.

Some misrepresentations
The property was set in a quiet location which was lovely. The villa was old, however, in many ways. Old bedding (mattresses, pillows, towels, furniture,) no screens or air conditioning. Many gates to navigate and doors to lock in getting in and out, to pool, etc. The pool was shared by far more than 10 families. On several nights, there were loud parties attended by young adults, with lots of alcohol, loud music, etc. Not what was advertised by owner. Property manager was helpful, but new to the job and did not know a lot about the area. He did try hard.

Great location. Marco is a superstar.
Great location. Not too far from Lake Como but having a car is a necessity to get around the area. Property is beautiful and we enjoyed the clubhouse/pool amenity. Virgilio was extremely helpful and did everything he could to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The only room in the house with air conditioning was the master (which was 2 twin beds pushed together) and I imagine the heat is not an issue most of the year but the middle of June was a bit warm so fans were necessary to keep the air moving. Virgilio was extremely attentive and provided fans for each room upon request. The real highlight of staying at the Villa was having Marco prepare dinner for us. We were a group of 9 and several of the kids have severe food allergies. Marco prepared delicious homemade meals paired perfectly with appropriate wines that were safe for everyone in our party. The meals were incredible and our only regret was, for fear of the danger of life threatening food allergies, not trying some of his deserts which we came to learn were his specialities. Based on the dinner courses he prepared for us, we could only imagine how incredible his deserts must have been. We really enjoyed getting to know Marco and he was a perfect introduction to a true Italian native as it was our first time in Italy. The house was spacious and had plenty of room for our group. I would highly recommend taking the plunge and splurging on home cooked meals with Marco. It made the house a home for us.

Great retreat for seeing Northern Italy!
We had a fantastic week at this villa early July 2019. Communication in advance with Francesca was great and she answered all our questions and put our mind at ease. Check in was awesome - our flight was delayed and then we spent nearly 2 hours at the airport trying to get the hire car sorted out! To say they were moving at snails pace is an understatement! I was worried that by the time we arrived Virgillo would have gone to bed. Thankfully he waited up for us and made sure we knew where the basics were. Throughout the week I was concerned that his presence would overwhelm our tranquil stay but he was just the right mix of available but not in your face! Anything we needed was no trouble and he and his wife and daughters were incredibly pleasant! His daughters even helped us buy train tickets the day that we were going into Milan! Can't say enough good things about how helpful they all were! When we arrived in Milan there was a heat wave so I was glad the master had air conditioning. It wasn't as good as we were used to but certainly better than nothing. The spiral staircase up to the master was quite tight and I would hate to have had to take heavy luggage up there. That said it was great for my hubby and I to be away from the rest of the family so a small detail. The kitchen was well equipped and there was everything you could possibly need. We had Marco come and cook for / with us one night and that was so much fun. The food was great and we got some great tips. We also found some great local restaurants which had really high quality food and so on a night we didn't need to venture far. The pool area is great - although if you are taking a bit of stuff with you like we did driving round is definitely easier than walking. The walk itself is easy and not that far (less than 10 minutes) but with towels, picnic etc not quite that easy. There is plenty of car parking near to the pool so much easier just to make the drive. If I had to think of one area to improve it would be the directions on how to get there. We arrived at night and it was late so there were none of the usual landmarks visible that are mentioned in the directions. I wish we had the full postal address so we could have just plugged it into the navigation / Waze! A minor detail once we had found the place. In all we had a really great time and I would love it go back. Its tranquil but a great base for exploring Milan, Como and the surrounding area!

Peaceful and relaxing and very comfortable
The villa is clearly a much loved home. Surrounded by lawns and trees, it is a peaceful place to unwind and enjoy cooking or being cooked for (thank you to Marco). There is a short walk to the pool under chestnut trees. We swam in the huge pool and played tennis. Easy access to Como and the lake and also not far from Milan and it’s airport. Thank you Francesca and family.

Lieu idyllique

The most magical family vacation
Even though we just arrived at home, I had to write a review of how simply fantastic this house and amenities were. The owners could not be more gracious. The house staff person was discreet and helpful. The house is gorgeous and full of wonderful antiques and rugs, the beds are made with antique linens and the kitchen is stocked full of everything you could possibly need for the preparation and serving of meals to a crowd. We were ten adults with two small children and everyone loved their accommodations. The lawn is huge and perfect for ultimate frisbee or soccer games. My family did on and off road biking and it is easy to get bikes delivered to the house. Altho the pool is a ten minute walk or drive, it is huge and we mostly had it all to ourselves- it was immaculate and the water was perfect. We brought a picnic lunch there and there is also tennis and volleyball or badminton. In the mornings we walked down the hill to the village where there is an old fashioned bakery that made incredible baked goods. The grocery store is a five minute drive too. It took thirty minutes for us to get there from the Milan airport and Lake Lugano and Lake Como are both an easy twenty five minute drive. There is so much to do in the area. On the one rainy day we had we went bowling in the town nearby. I can only say that our family will never forget what a wonderful time at Il Ronco.

Big, cosy villa with nice surroundings
We spent a really nice Christmas here, and the villa was perfect in size even though we were a large group of 11 people. We really much enjoyed also playing tennis at the premises, and we think that the swimming pool area in general would be very nice in the summer. From the big and beautiful front yard and terraces you get a view of the alps. Now when it was winter, we enjoyed the villa more from the inside, sitting by the relaxing fireplace. The kitchen was very well equipped, it had everything we needed and more. Thank you! I would definitely recommend this place for a nice, cosy family get-together.

Succesful choice for holidays!
We came Oltrona village and Il Ronco 22nd of Dec to spend our Christmas holidays there. The house and the whole area were just perfect for our big group (11 persons). The facilities were really good for us, enough bedrooms, bathrooms, big kitchen to cook all christmas foods etc. The location was very good, only some 40 km from Malpensa airport, La Como lake quite near. I really can recommend this place! Timo Hanninen from Finland

Host profile image
I am Italian and grew up in this house. I now live in London with my husband and 3 children and we use the house for family holidays. We all love it because it is comfortable, close to Milan for shopping (and culture :))
and to the lake for fantastic days out but it's also always quiet in the evenings when we come back and have a drink in front of the fire or out by the pool or on the veranda, depending on the season.

Why they chose this property

The house was built by my dad, who was an architect, for his family, on a hill that belongs to my mother's family. He designed 3 different houses and she chose the one that was built. They then decorated it together and as we grew up, we added bits too, so it really feels like a home, not just a house. It is on top of a hill, with magnificent views of the Parco del Ticino (a beautiful forest) all the way to the Alps, with not a single house to be seen in between.
It has a beautiful eco-pool in the garden that has been recently built to substitute the use of one we shared with other families on the other side of the hill. The swimming pool measures 14x4 mt and along one side sits the separate planting area with all the lovely flowers and water lilies that keep the water clean and lovely for us. It is an incredible feeling to swim in clear water with no chemicals in it and no salt.
If I had not inherited this house and i saw it, I would definitely dream of buying it.

What makes this property unique

The great thing about il Ronco is that it is so well located for getting to and from Malpensa airport (30/40 minutes drive), shopping and sightseeing in Milan (30 minutes), lake Como (20 minutes), 4 golf courses (all within 30 minutes drive), riding in the village next door, swimming in the lovely pool whilst at the same time being able to enjoy complete peace if you just want to sit in the garden and read a book or have a drink whilst watching the sun go down behind the Alps. The only interruption would be the sound of a cuckoo bird or a squirrel running from one tree to the next.
Our caretaker lives in a flat in the basement and keeps the communal areas clean for our guests every day, unless they ask us not to, and will do extra cleaning upon request for which guests pay him directly. A chef is also available upon request.
