About this property

Cottage In Underbarrow, Cumbria, Lake District

This cosy three-bedroom cottage has recently been refurbished and offers comfortable accommodation for six people. The oldest parts of Orphan Crag are believed to date from the 17th century, with the property retaining many original features, such as plethora of oak beams. The cottage has been sympathetically refurbished, incorporating a wood burning stove, fully equipped kitchen and cosy dining and living rooms.
Situated in the small village of Underbarrow within the Lake District National Park, Orphan Crag provides an excellent base for exploring the local area, by foot or car. Tucked away at the head of the beautiful Lyth Valley, the property is in an ideal location in which to enjoy the stunning local scenery, as well as providing easy access to the heart of the Lakes.

The village boasts a pub serving excellent food whilst the bustling market town of Kendal, with its many shops, is just a short drive away. There are several other local eateries in the surrounding villages and Staveley, ten minutes drive away, is home to the Hawkshead Brewery. Just a little further and you reach the town of Bowness and Lake Windermere.

Lovely place to stay…!
We had a very good time here during August 2022. The cottage is wonderful and has everything needed for a good stay. Heather was very accommodating with our unusual request for start- and end date, and she also responded immediately to the one problem we had (a noisy smoke alarm that was yearning for a new battery…). So all in all: top marks! The single caveat that I would add: the larger lakes are a minimum of 30 minutes by car, so if you wish to visit them all, you spend a fair amount of time getting there and back again.

Great place!
Lovely cottage in a idyllic location. Spacious property with three big bedrooms. Back garden backs onto open farmland with lambs and pheasants right next to you. Nice local pub and would definitely stop again!

Wonderful cottage in a lovely location.
Cottage was wonderful, all that we could have asked for and more. Location was perfect - away from busy Windermere but near enough to get to everywhere we wanted to go. Cottage very well equipped and comfortable.

What a great cottage to stay in and visit the Lake District from. The cottage is fantastic and was a very warm welcoming place to be based at for the week. Heather was great with her communication and everything that is advertised is here, and more. I would highly recommend to anyone.

Lovely cottage, had some hiccups
Unfortunately the cleaners hadn’t shown up as expected and were quite late, plus there were some issues with the electrics meaning the heating didn’t work for a while. It mostly got sorted out over the next couple of days. Heather was contactable and tried to resolve things for us. The cottage is otherwise very cozy and in a quiet village with a great pub for food 1 minute walk away. There are hikes that can be done from the cottage too. Apart from the arrival and electrics, which were one-off issues, I would highly recommend.

A "must stay" in the Lake District
This delightful cottage in Underbarrow is much larger than it looks, and the photographs do not do it justice. Everything is upgraded to a very high standard and is really a home away from home. The owner, Heather, has thought of all the little things to make a traveler comfortable (iron, sewing kit, games, books, hair dryer, make up mirror, umbrella, etc.) We loved the pastoral beauty of the surroundings and, of course, the excellent pub at the end of the lane! We would heartily recommend this lovely property.

Cosy cottage in quiet village.
Orphan Cragg is a lovely cottage, with superb views of the countryside and Scout Scar. It is ideally located for the Lake District and much quieter than the main tourist spots. The local pub serves great food, although you must book ahead. There is lots to do within a short drive: boating/sailing on Windermere, quad biking/clay shooting with Outdoor Adventures just south of Kendal. Abbott Gallery and Kendal Museum both worth a visit too.

A lovely cottage in a beautiful setting
We stayed in Orphan Crag for 2 weeks. It's a comfortable, well-equipped cottage in a peaceful location but within easy access to Kendal and surroundings. Some really good walking, quiet lanes and beautiful views. The cottage has a nice selection of maps, guides and books on local history and landscapes, plus some well-thumbed thrillers in case of rain. We loved our stay and will come again.

Lovely Cottage
Cottage was delightful, we had a few teething issues with the heating and both fires did not work which was a shame, also the door was a struggle to open and close, however other than that, everything was very homely and a pleasure to stay in :)

Brilliant holiday accommodation
This property had all we wanted for our holiday. Beautiful location, real character in absolute abundance and an extremely homely feel. I wouldn't hesitate holidaying at this property again for sure. Great pub/restaurant down the road and the view of Scout Scar and surrounding countryside from the rear of the house is incredible.

Lovely cottage, perfectly set up and in a fantastic location for walking and relaxing.
The cottage was warm, cosy and comfortable with a very well-equipped kitchen. Everything was immaculately clean and the welcome gift of wine and biscuits was a thoughtful touch. There’s lots to do within a short drive, and a great pub a few yards from the door. Lovely walks from the doorstep, too. We had a fantastic week and very much hope to return. Thank you!

Character cottage in the countryside.
Lovely old character cottage. Clean, warm, cosy, real fire, low beams, thick walls, but with modern bathroom and kitchen. Peaceful countryside setting, just up the road from a really good pub (Black Labrador) which does meals (you might have to book a table as it gets busy). Not much mobile phone signal, but cottage has secure internet. Low beams could be a problem for tall people (the one on the stairs has leapt out at my husbands head, twice!!), but the lounge, kitchen, and 2 of the bedrooms are fine. You will need a car/ taxi/ bike, as no buses or rail near. Underbarrow is located out in the country, and has no shops, but it is near Kendal (9 mins away by car) and Bowness and Windermere. Huddleston's butchers in Windermere do fantastic award winning pork pies and Cumberland sausages, Booth's in Windermere is an upmarket supermarket for that something special, or there is Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Aldi, etc., in Kendal. If you want peace and quiet and relaxing, with views across fields to the fells, I would thoroughly recommend this cottage.

Beautiful,well equipped cottage.
This cottage was the perfect getaway for us. We used it over the weekend of the Great North Swim and it's location is perfect. The owners have kept the character of the cottage alive while giving it a modern feel with a well stocked kitchen - there is everything you would need/want. The 3 bedrooms are well presented, our party was 4 adults and 2 children and there was ample room. The village of Underbarrow is peaceful with a lovely pub, but book ahead as it was very busy. Highly recommended and many thanks to Heather.

idealic cottage
The property was just what we needed 3 bedrooms , modernised and very spacious and when the sun was out the cottage was welcoming . the village of underbarrow is very small though has a great pub called the Black labridor. we couldn't get a table as both nioghts were booked up but we had their takeaway menu which we all throughly enjoyed and of a high statndard cuisine. The cottage is ideally situated to get around the spectactular lake district

We live in Nottinghamshire and have three grown up children. We both work and spent most of our spare time in 2014 completely refurbishing the cottage with the help of friends and family. We love walking, and enjoy a good meal out in a local pub or restaurant, and the cottage is perfect for both of these.

Why they chose this property

We wanted to buy a cottage in the Lakes and Orphan Crag ticked all the boxes, being close to the central Lakes area but slightly off the beaten track.

What makes this property unique

Orphan Crag is just a few minutes drive from Kendal and a short stroll from an excellent local pub selling good beer and serving excellent food at reasonable prices.
