Lovely short stay
Overdale is a lovely cottage with beautiful views both from inside and outside the property. The cottage was just as described and spotless. There was plenty of room for us - two adults and a small dog - and we really enjoyed sitting out on the roof terrace when the weather was fine. The village is very pretty, the landscape lush and contrasting and the locals really friendly.

Lovely cottage an ideal retreat
Lovely cosy cottage, nice bottle of wine and biscuits to welcome us. Everything left for thewood burner but the heating was so efficient we didn’t need it. Tucked away down a steep lane which provides amazing views but be careful how much you bring as you’ll have to carry it from main road down cobbled lane

Lovely Cottage
The cottage was lovely. It was clean and had everything that we needed for our 4 day stay. The roof top terrace was great, we had breakfast up there each morning. We had no problem with the location but people who have mobility issues could struggle as there is a steep, cobbled walkway outside and inside is a narrow steel staircase. The village was lovely and the pubs served great food and welcomed us with our dog. The walks in the area are plentiful and have beautiful views.

Cute and clean!
Very clean and hosts were thoughtful in the little things. Charming setting in a nice town. Parking on the street was easy. Carrying luggage down the hill to the cartage could be challenging, so take your time. I met the owner at checkout and he was delightful and informative to talk to. Overall great experience.

Hillside Cottage
The cottage itself is welcoming and spacious, and suited us to a tee. The kitchen and bathroom are particularly well appointed. The situation on a fairly steep hillside is essentially romantic, as can be well appreciated from the terrace; if you are a light sleeper, badgers and tawny owls will entertain you at night. Excellent footpaths cross Youlgreave and from the front door we walked to Monyash along Lathkill Dale, which is a five-star walk, and back from Monyash along the Limestone Way, another five stars. There is an excellent pub in Monyash and a café. We walked south along the Limestone Way to the stones at Harthill and then to Birchover (Sunday lunch at The Druid Inn; another pub is available) before climbing gently to the stone circle on Aston Moor. (Birchover is in fact Millstone Grit, and the last bit of this walk leaves the Limestone Way respectfully.) There is also a swimming area in the Bradford below the cottage (in fact next door is called River View) and we'd have been down there first thing every morning only we forgot our togs. Youlgreave has good stores, good pubs and an excellent car park. The car park seemed associated with the parish council and with the play area and the allotments, so we did not begrudge our donation which paid for our car's resting there while we walked.

Peaceful, warm, stunning setting and walkers’ paradise.
The setting is amazing and the cottage is well equipped. Access is a quite steep cobbled path, but we are both in our 70s and it wasn’t a problem. There is a free car park at one end of the village, with an “honesty box” contribution system. The wood burner is fantastic and makes for a very cosy atmosphere. We were sorry to leave and would like to come back soon.

Lovely few days
We will be happy to return here. Very good base for walking. Steep walk up to the street and down to the valley but if you are physicaly OK that is no problem, it looks charming. Lovely and peaceful.

We had a fantastic stay at Overdale Cottage. Beautiful location with lots of great local walks, 3 great pubs in the village and a handy village shop. Youlgrave was also a great location for exploring other Peak District destinations too. We were sad to leave!

Well equiped cottage in a great location
A lovely little cottage that was perfect for my wife and I and our Golden retriever. Many walks from the doorstep and also within a few minutes drive. The cottage is well equipped and has everything you need to start your stay off. There are pubs within a few minutes walk, a lovely little café, local butchers and a few other shops all within 5-10 minutes walk. The owners have responded to us very quickly pre and during our stay. All round a great little cottage in a great location! Wonderful !

About the host

Hosted by Phillip & Susan Walker

Host profile image
We are Phillip and Susan Walker and have been walking in the Peak District for many years. In 2004 we were fortunate to be able to buy Overdale Cottage in our favourite village of Youlgrave (or Youlgreave as it is sometimes spelt).

We look after the cottage ourselves and we stay there as often as we can so we can be sure all is in order for our guests.

In 2008 we extended the cottage by converting a stone outhouse into the kitchen and creating a roof terrace on top which has fantastic views over the River Bradford and Bradford Dale.

Why they chose this property

Youlgrave is one of the loveliest villages in the Peak District. There are numerous walks straight from the cottage door from a short stroll to walks of several miles. The village has three pubs, a bakery, butcher's shop/delicatessen and a Post Office/general store all within easy walking distance, there is also a good local bus service.
