About this property

Villa With Panoramic Views Over Obidos Lagoon To The Atlantic Ocean

The spacious open-plan living area on the upper level enjoys truly spectacular views of the silver water and sunsets over the lagoon where it meets the wild Atlantic Ocean. Floor to ceiling opening glass doors give access to the large roof terrace with brick built barbecue and outdoor eating space for 8 and relaxed sitting space.
Inside there is a fully equipped modern kitchen with induction hob. The dining area, with custom made wood and marble dining table seating 8 and leather chairs, enjoys wonderful views of the lagoon. Finally there is comfortable indoor lounge seating for 8 for if it is cooler but you still want the view. The natural colours of the wood ceiling, white walls, terracotta floor and blue and white tiles in the upstairs cloakroom, maintain the Portuguese style. There is a wood burning stove for chilly evenings out of the main holiday season (there is no central heating).
The villa is spacious with large rooms, and the multiple living areas mean that everyone can find their own space to relax. The main entrance is on the ground floor into a wide entrance hall which will easily accommodate push chairs and car seats (parking in the road outside). Three main well appointed bedrooms are on this level, as well as a large additional lounge with TV, sofas, books and table for board games. A modern custom built steep oak staircase leads to the upper floor. There is also a wider external stair.
The large Pool View room (twin) is on the lower level by the pool (not suitable for young children) with bathroom, a small kitchenette and washing machine. Handy for pool changing and showering. This is reached by an external stair and is popular with teenagers.
The pool is sunny for most of the day and has a sheltered, secluded (gated) terraced area for sunbathing.
The veranda on the mid-level provides a shady place to sit and overlook the pool. The fenced garden offers a level play-space for children and sitting for adults and the established trees and shrubs provide shade if needed. In this part of Portugal there is often a light breeze making the temperature very pleasant for sitting outside. Shutters are available to keep the house cool on hotter days. The villa is on a small mature development at the end of a cul-de-ac with parking outside, The lagoon area is in easy walking distance and proximity to the A8 motorway makes it an excellent base to explore much of Portugal. There are many good and reasonable restaurants close by, so eating out is very affordable.
We built the villa 30 years ago, have grown up there and our children love it so we have refurbished it, maintaining the traditional feel and blending in modern amenities. We hope you enjoy it too.

Amazing holiday home
Our stay in this house was truly amazing. As other reviews mention, it is not ‘clean’ as one would expect in a hotel, so this might stress people with mysophobia out. For us this was not a problem. The house is well equipped, you can clearly notice that it is a ‘lived’ holiday home. The views from te balcony are great, and in real life the rooms are even bigger and brighter than the pictures reveal. The beds were good, we all slept like babies. The house was a bit difficult to find due to confusing house numbering. The location is peaceful. A car is needed though to go to shops and the beach. The communication went smoothly. All in all we had a wonderful holiday in the house and I hope we’ll be back next year!

Amazing view from a formidable large terrace
We stayed 5 adults and 2 babies in this fantastic house with an absolutely incredible view from the roof terrace. Athough there are many stairs, it was no problem even if we had small children with us. When you are in the house and not in the pool, you live on the roof terrace, which the kitchen is right next to. You can make some nice trips and Lisboa is approx. an hour's drive away, so we were there a few times. There are good shopping opportunities in the nearby town. If we needed help, Shiela's friend Carla, who lives nearby, could help. So all in all we had a really nice holiday in Sheila's very nice house.

Stunning views
Spent a very relaxing week here. The views from the balcony over the lagoon to the sea were amazing. We loved sitting and watching the sunsets especially. The villa was well equipped, and Carla, the housekeeper who lives nearby was very helpful and kind. Lots to see and do within a short drive away, and there is a footpath along the lagoon a few minutes walk away from the house. We found the area to be peaceful and a great place for a holiday, if you like a mix of sightseeing and chilling out somewhere beautiful.

A gem for Familyreunion
We rented the villa to meet up our kids who came from different places i Europe. Perfect distance to the airport, a real portuguise HOME Clean, beautiful, great ceramic! The contactperson Carla was fabolous. Charming, great fun and with good tips and ideas. There was not a chance to go to a restaurant at night Cause the kids did not want to miss the magic sunset hours. So that meant a lot of cooking wich was just enjoyable due to the great kitchen and BBQ Getting the meat and veggies was great fun Every day. Gorgious beaches, surfplaces and hikes in a nationalpark closeby were a few of the highlights. Perfect tips in the manual at the house! A very special place-GO!

Fantastic holiday home - not to be missed!
We spent a glorious week in Casa das Plumas and were loathe to leave. The house is a true "home from home" - extremely comfortable and well equipped. The views from the spacious and airy living room, leading to an enormous terrace, are truly spectacular and both upper and lower terraces offer both sun and shade to suit all. We were met by Carla who is great fun and very approachable. - many thanks to her for everything. The small sailing club (10 min stroll) is a great place even for non-sailors as you can relax outside and enjoy a drink and good, simple food and watch others on the water. As we do sail, we hired a catamaran for a couple of hours and explored the lagoon. The walk into Foz (40 min stroll) takes you away from the road and along the lagoon. The sand dunes approaching the ocean were practically empty and the waves spectacular. Our first "beer stop" on this walk was always O Banheiro - inexpensive and unpretentious. Next the restaurant Cais de Praia - more upmarket . Best welcome and lunch out was at Cocosbar. I wish I could say that we explored other towns nearby but quite frankly we were happy with the stroll and most of all, relaxing at the Casa. We certainly want to come back - thank you Sheila for all your help and advice. Helen and Paul (Edinburgh) suffering post holiday blues.....

Beautiful and very well-equipped villa
Casa das Plumas is a traditional Portuguese villa. The view of the Óbidos Lagoon from the top floor kitchen/sitting room is stunning. All the bedrooms are comfortable and immaculately clean. Overall, staying there was a real pleasure and there is so much to see in the area. This is the real Portugal!

Lovely views and plenty of space
We booked Casa Das Plumas as a group of friends wanting to explore the area. The house proved to be a fantastic for exploring with easy driveable access to Obidos, Caldas Da Rainha and surrounding coastline. The house itself is very well equipped and spacious enough for a group, with a fabulous living space upstairs and lovely views from the ample roof terrace. The internal stairs are steep but we didn't find this an issue, there is also as there is an external staircase that can be easily used. The communications with the owner and housekeeper were superb, with lots of information provided - we felt well-looked after without the attention being intrusive. The local restaurants were very good, in both Nadadouro and nearby Foz, and the closest ones being much cheaper than Lisbon. Yes, you might need to drive but we left the car behind one night after a few glasses of wine - it's easy and not too pricey to get a taxi, and we had a lovely walk along the lagoon into Foz the next day to pick up the car. I'd recommend this house, and to anyone who hasn't visited the area, do visit and explore - it's beautiful.

Beautiful Authentic Villa with Stunning Views
I spent 2 weeks at the property staying in the master bedroom and it was fantastic. The décor and finish of the villa is to a very high standard and the large open plan living area on the top floor was the perfect place to spend evenings. Good, well equipped kitchen and a traditional easy to use BBQ. The pool was clean and the outside areas were well kept and spacious. The location is great. The sailing club a few minutes walk away is ideal and there were too many attractions within a 30 minute drive to fit them all in over 14 days. The area itself is quiet without being disconnected and the neighbours are very pleasant. Finally the information provided by Sheila is second to none. There is a pack at the villa which is clearly the result of many years visiting the area and tells you everything you need to know to enjoy Portugal off the beaten track. Every restaurant listed was 10/10 and it took away the "pot luck" factor so often encountered when choosing places to eat abroad as everywhere was tried and tested. I cant wait to stay again!

Hidden Gem with stunning views over Obidos Lagoon
Casa Da Plumas is a hidden gem. We loved the open plan lounge with stunning views over Obidos Lagoon. The house was really well equipped with lots of comfortable seating. Sheila sent us lots of information on things to do in the area and came back to us promptly on all our queries. We can particularly recommend the Sailing Club and Cafe D. Lenor in Dom Carlos Park in Caldas Da Rainha. The location provided a great base for touring the area. Carla was great providing information and recommendations for places to visit and things to do. We really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend Casa da Plumas

Fantastic Villa in great location
Photos of the villa and the view don't do it justice. It was beautiful. Clean, well presented filled with everything you need - never seen so much crockery and pots and pans in a rental property. The upper level is great for larger groups -plenty of space for everyone to relax inside or out. The view over the lagoon is fantastic. We loved the location - not too far by foot to a few restaurants if you didn't want to drive (20 minutes walk but some hills), close to the beach and plenty to see and do in the area. The only thing I think its worth pointing out, is to those who are less able - the top level (kitchen, dining room, living area and large outdoor balcony) is accessible internally via some very steep wooden steps. We had kids (4 and 8) so we made them use the outside steps to get upstairs whenever we could. The last one to lock up at night would have to use the wooden steps back down though :) We also used the pool room with an extra bed as there was 9 of us - this room was great with its own bathroom which we all used when down by the pool. Parking was easy, all on road but plenty of room for a few cars for each of the surrounding properties. Pool wasn't overlooked by neighbouring properties - unless they hungover the side of their outdoor stairs!. We all agreed that if we return to the area we would stay at Casa Das Plumas again.

A beautiful villa with great views and in a lovely location. Lived up to all the reviews and more.
As soon as we arrived we got the wow factor straight away. The layout of the villa was more than ideal for a family of 8 of both sides of the age spectrum. The views from the top of the villa were wonderful, where we enjoyed eating our dinner and having drinks, while watching beautiful sunsets. The grandchildren screamed with delight when they saw the reasonable sized pool. There was adequate amount of loungers around the pool. The kids in fact were in the pool within 10 minutes of our arrival. We were met by the wonderful Portuguese Carla who lived across the road and looked after the property for the owners. She speaks perfect English. She looked after our every need during our stay. The location could not be better. The beaches, cafes and restaurant were in easy walking distance. Even for the more elderly of the party! The local restaurants in Nadadouro, served wonderful Portuguese food at a reasonable price, and service was good and friendly. We spent quite sometime at the the Obidos Lagoon, which is only 5 minutes from the villa. The sailing club provided plenty of water activities {catamarans, windsurfing, kayaks and paddle boards. All at very reasonable rates (even coaching}. The club cafe scrumptious food and drinks, again at a very reasonable cost. The club staff were lovely and friendly. Particularly Filipe, who my grandchildren loved. I should finish by saying how helpful Sheila, the owner, and her brother Simon were. There many emails going to and fro with information and very helpful tips. We will definitely return again. Our grandchildren were very upset when we left and made me promise they could return again. Thank you Sheila, for a dream holiday. Daphne and Joe Slater, Hampshire, UK

Lovely villa in a perfect location
The view from the upstairs of the villa has to been seen to be believed. It directly overlooks the nearby lagoon and enjoys a spectacular sunset each evening. The large terrace is reached through the newly-renovated upstairs area, with comfortable seating inside and out, a fully equipped kitchen and wood-burner for the winter months. There are a range of bedrooms and the property could comfortably host a large family but is also perfect for a couple to get away. The rooms are comfortable and quiet, allowing time to relax when not busy exploring the surrounding area. Within a short distance of the villa is the historic walled town of Obidos. As well as being an enjoyable day out in itself the town also hosts several great restaurants and cafes for travellers. A little closer to home is the town of Caldas da Rainha which has a market selling local fresh food, an excellent variety of independent shops and a park with boating lake. The lagoon itself, on the doorstep of the property, has a range of bars and restaurants to enjoy at any time of day but the atmosphere at sunset is particularly vibrant. I'd recommend the villa and the area to any traveller looking to see the real Portugal.

About the host

Host profile image
We are an extended family covering all ages - young children, teenagers, students, parents and pensioners - we all love to relax here. We go for short breaks and longer holidays and are always sad to leave. We were seduced by the magic of the lagoon and 30 years later have not tired of it; even though we look over it every day we are there. There is something for everyone, whether it be cafes and cakes for my father, sailing for my brother, sunbathing or shopping for the girls; cycling or walking in the countryside. Our neighbours are lovely too. We are happy to make suggestions if you have specific interests, do ask.

Why they chose this property

We love this part of Portugal, preferring its traditional feel, beautiful unspoilt beaches, friendly people and the magic of the lagoon which we see every morning from our villa. It is an ideal place for a relaxing break for couples and families with children, and is well located to visit other areas of Portugal. The local restaurants are exceptional value and welcome children; alternatively the local butcher will cut meat for the barbeque. The Caldas fish market is one of the best in Portugal and the vegetables from the market are so fresh and tasty you will want to cook them. We built the villa 30 years ago, we have grown up there and our children love it too so, we have recently refurbished it, maintaining the traditional feel and blending in some modern amenities. It is furnished as our second home and we hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.

What makes this property unique

You will be enchanted by the amazing view in all weathers. The villa is spacious and well appointed with parking outside. It is easy to get here, flying to Lisbon it is a 1 hour drive, mainly on motorway (A8) to get to the villa. This also makes it viable for a long weekend visit, which we often do in the mid season as the weather is often very warm in the day right through to the end of October.
If you arrive without a car the regular fast buses go from LIsbon to Caldas da Rainha, a short taxi ride away. These take about an hour and cost 8 Euros per person. It is easier to have a car to explore the area but there is plenty to do without.
The property is furnished and decorated in the Portuguese style of white walls, terracotta and tiling, positioned above the Lagoa de Obidos with a breath-taking panorama of views to the end of the Lagoon and to the Atlantic Ocean, just at the point where the sun sets in the summer. The modern kitchen and living area, with floor to ceiling fully opening glass doors, allow us to enjoy this timeless view at any time of year.
This is a great base to visit many of Portugal's most interesting places driving along the coast roads, or the motorway network is within easy reach, and it is in the middle of the country.
