About this property

Country House With Ancient Terraced Garden In Bargemon, Var, Provence, France

La Peirégoué was originally a "cabanon" where villagers rested after tending their orchard and vegetable garden. The house was progressively enlarged to its present size but it has retained its bucolic charm. We bought it 35 years ago mainly for the beauty of its old terraced garden on a fairly steep incline. It features an olive orchard, fig and cherry trees, a magnificent secluded swimming-pool, a pétanque strip, fountains and plenty of tree-shaded areas to escape, rest and read. The house is on 3 levels with direct access to the main level including a large living-room with dining area, log fireplace, the spacious eat-in kitchen and a bathroom. In summer, meals are enjoyed in a sheltered area on the main courtyard shaded by acacia trees. The upper level consists of 3 bedrooms, a bathroom and a large terrace overlooking the valley. At pool level, there is a separate flat with a double bedroom, a single bedroom , each with arched French windows giving onto the garden, and a bathroom with a stand-up shower and toilet. This is a family home, very personal, with memorabilia, art and a warm, cosy atmosphere. 10mn walk away, Bargemon is a lovely and lively village, actually the liveliest in the area, offering all facilities (doctor, pharmacy, post-office, supermarket, property agencies, shops, museums, municipal tennis court and swimming pool, ATM) and seven restaurants. The village has several squares each with its fountain and shaded by tall plane trees. The main square, place Chauvier, is where villagers and tourists congregate the whole day long around a glass of wine or pastis to see everyone else and hear the latest gossips. Bargemon is ideally located between the sea and the first ski slopes, 50 minutes drive away. The Grand Canyon of the Verdon is close by as well as an infinite variety of spectacular landscapes, mountain lakes and hilltop villages. The area is famous for cycling , trekking, hang-gliding and sports two beautiful golf courses 30mn drive away. Côte de Provence vineyards and wineries are in close proximity. In summer Bargemon and the neighbouring villages organise cultural events and music festivals. The art museums in St Tropez, Antibes, St Paul de Vence and the like are only 1 hour drive away. Draguignan, the closest town, has a beautiful open market and a great Provencal arts and traditions museum.

We had a lovely time at the house in late June. We all particularly enjoyed the pool and walking to the village. It was a great cross generational stay. Thank you for having us!

Very nice house in beautiful Bargemon
Very nice house, well maintained and beautifully situated in a quiet area so privacy is not a problem. Has a nice pool and boules court. The patio with an outside, under roof dining table with room for all 8 of us was very nice, both in the mornings and evenings. The village with restaurants, bakeries, wine shops and a food store is just a 10 minute walk away. Lots of things to do in the area. Vineyards, mountain hikes and much more. The south coast is just over an hour drive away. As a plus: The owner is very nice and helpful. Easy t communicate with. I can highly recommend this house!

Very nice rustic house close in a lovely small village
The 3 generations in our family had a very nice stay. Lovely rustic house with a large pool. The owner was very helpful during our stay, but the interior is old and the cleaning was not great. The short walk to the center of town with restaurants, bakeries and supermarket made it all a very nice experience. We can recommed a stay here.

Outstanding value in a stunning location
The property was way better than the description. The pool was fantastic, the house was comfortable and very well equipped and the location was simply superb. We are wildlife nutcases and had some amazing close encounters and the variety and colour of the wild flowers just blew me away. Simply fabulous. Bargemon is a lovely village and people there were really friendly. I really don't think we could have found anything better as far as comfort and location than this property. We WILL be going back, if JF will have us?

Beautiful Provençal home
We spent 6 weeks in this beautiful old home in the south of Provence. The grounds for the property are lovely and we made good use of every amenity: the superb salt-water pool, the boules pitch and the quiet patio with an amazing view of the valley. Since we arrived in April, we also had a few cool days when we used the fireplace inside- very cosy. (We had a taste of how lovely the summertime would be here, as it warmed up in mid May with many hot days and clear starry nights). The garden bedrooms are nice and private for a couple and perhaps two children (only one shared bathroom down there), and the main house works well for at most two couples plus a single (small rooms and only one full bathroom + a toilet/sink for sharing in the house). We cooked great meals in the old-style kitchen. The markets in the area have fantastic produce, cheeses, olives etc: not to be missed. We also tried all the local restaurants recommended by the host, Jean Francois, which were great - especially La Ferme Le Pavillon, L'Estanco, La Campana. It is great to be able to walk into the beautiful village of Bargemon (the 10 minute walk also helps to digest all that extra pastry and cheese that you will be enjoying). Our host Jean Francois could not have been more helpful and responsive, truly a "premier host". We recommend the All Trails app for finding some absolutely stunning hikes all over the area. If you are looking for an authentic Provencal experience, this is it, it's magical!

Quiet & peaceful Provençal perfection
Lovely home in a very private pocket of Provence, yet only 10mins on foot to the centre of the picturesque village of Bargemon. The property was inviting and authentic, with everything we needed. The pool was our favourite spot, surrounded by the green hills and cypresses, absolutely private and benefited from all-day sun (plenty of shade from the umbrella), with really comfy and attractive sun beds. We fell in to a rhythm of going to town late morning for coffee and croissants, then settling in with a good book by the pool, only leaving to prepare the next meal (usually a bbq on the shady side of the house). The house was cool and with the windows looking over the valley open in the morning, felt lovely and fresh the whole day long. Interaction with the owner was warm, prompt and helpful. Thanks for a great family stay, we would love to return.

Jardins d'azur

Pictures don't do this place justice!
We had a wonderful holiday in this beautiful house. We were a party of six - three couples. The property was big enough so that we never felt crowded. The bedrooms are nice and the common areas spacious and comfortable. The huge, beautiful gardens offered each of us plenty of space to get a break from the others if needed. Bargemon itself is a really beautiful, idyllic town with a really nice square and some great restaurants. The property is well situated, around ten minutes walk away. Close enough to take a nice walk to the bakery for our breakfast each morning. The pool is really nice and offers really stunning views of the valley below. The house is pretty well isolated. We never heard any noise from any neighbours. Jean-Francois was really helpful and responsive to any questions I had. It really was a pleasure to deal with him throughout All in all, it exceeded my expectations. We will definitely go back. Thank you JF!

Stunning house and garden for a fabulous family holiday
We shared the most wonderful family holiday in this gorgeously positioned and well appointed house. It all just went far too quickly. A perfect base to explore the surrounding area, for us highlights included, playing in the Gorges Du Verdon, relaxing on the beaches near to Sainte Maxime and exploring the many hill top villages. For us, it was hard to get our party motivated to leave the house; there was too much fun to be had playing in the pool with its incredible views, going on adventures around the huge grounds or just chilling in one of the many terraces. The boules pitch was also very well used with a week long inter family tournament, ending on our last day with a two hour tension filled show down. The ability to take a stunning walk into Bargemon to collect the morning baguettes and croissants was fantastic. We also shared many coffee's and drinks in the town square where you can enjoy people, bike and car watching. As a keen cyclist I also managed to sneak out in the mornings and nights for some top cycling and explored the immediate area-with a category 2 climb, the Col De Belle-Homme right outside the house, i really was in heaven. Jean-François is fantastic to deal with and was extremely helpful and kind in all aspects of our experience. Thank you very much from all of us. We had a wonderful holiday with life long memories.

Wonderful stay, lovely house, gardens and pool, great location
We stayed as a small family in July 2017. In my case this was a return, as I had stayed at the house with my parents on a previous occasion 25 years ago. The house, gardens and pool are as lovely as ever. The house is secluded but easy walking distance (with push chair) to the lovely hill town of Bargemon (we walked it at least once a day every day during our stay). It sits at the end of a quiet lane behind a pedestrian entrance gate, behind which lie substantial and very secluded grounds - an olive grove on multiple terraces interspersed with mature cypress trees, figs, lavender and other interesting plants. There is a nice patio outside the front door for meals outside. The main lounge is large, nicely furnished and has lofty views over the valley. The kitchen is homely and well stocked. The bedrooms upstairs are small but attractive and open onto a big roof terrace, ideal for a nightcap and star-gazing at the end of the day. The pool is on a lovely terrace with views down the valley to the next village of Claviers. There are lots of things to do, nice restaurants and amenities (butcher, baker etc.) in Bargemon and in the surrounding area (esp. the Lac du St Croix and Grand Canyon to the north, beaux villages (Tourtour, Chateaudouble) to the west and vineyards and coast to the south, all a short drive from the house. The owner, Jean-Francois, is kind and extremely courteous and was at the end of the phone if we had any queries. We will return.

Very cosy and relaxed feel. Lived in & well loved
Fantastic location - easy walking down into the village - and we loved the house, and its rather quirkycharacter. The same was true of the garden. Pool kept the sun all day long, and view was very pleasing on the eye. Bargemon felt alive and had good restaurants, as did several of the other little local villages. We had fabulous weather - very hot all week: the upstairs bedrooms remained very hot by night - if, like me, you don't feel you can open shutters, for breeze, without screens. Total break from TV was very welcome. I hope we will be able to return one day: it was just lovely! Diana

Authentic Provence
If you are searching for 'the real France' then this is the house for you. The house, with its family owned memorabilia and beautiful provencale colour palette epitomises the soul of Provence. Don't come here if you want high tech mod cons, but if you appreciate sun dappled terraces and pathways flanked with lavender and rosemary, shady spots to read, and unparalleled views of the landscape and stars from the roof terrace then book now! The pool is one of the villa's loveliest features. You look up through tall pines to a clear blue sky. We would not hesitate to return.

Wonderful location
My wife and I had a wonderful stay in mid October. This lovely and secluded house is at the end of a street above Bargemon. Views from the house and its terraces extend over the rooftops of the village and across the valley. The main floor contains the kitchen, large living/dining room, and a large bathroom with sink, toilet, tub, and the washer. Upstairs are one large and two quite small bedrooms, and a bathroom with sink and toilet. Two of the bedrooms open onto the roof terrace, ideal for sunbathing and enjoying the view. The ground floor (accessed from outdoors) contains two large bedrooms and a bathroom with sink, toilet, and shower. The situation is suitable for two couples or two small families. This obviously much-loved house is decorated with many antiques and mementos. The Parisian owner was most gracious and attentive to our needs. The very private terraced and landscaped grounds, the pool, and several outdoor sitting and dining areas all look over the valley. Even on breezy days, one can find a sheltered spot for outdoor dining or reading. Ten minutes walk down the hill is the village with its bakery, butcher, grocery, weekly market, and several restaurants. Bargemon is an unusually charming, well-maintained, functioning village with no surrounding sprawl. We have returned to it often. Beyond the house a track leads to hiking/running trails through the forest above and west of Bargemon, to Montferrat or to Callas.

Memorable holiday house
I would recommend this holiday home for a family wanting to have a vacation filled with great memories. My family plus sisters and father arrived for a week staying at Jean- Francois home. We spent everyday in their beautiful pool, with perfect evenings outside around the big family table for BBQS. Bargemon town was close enough for a gentle stroll to and had everything you need in it ( supermarket, boulangerie, wine shop, pharmacies) and some great places to stop for a drink and food. We had day trips to medieval towns on hilltops, wineries and of course the beach which was a good days adventure. The house itself was nice and cool for the hot summer days and there were plenty of areas to get away from the others for some quiet time ;) Communication with Jean- Francois was easy as was check in and they have even offered to send back some shoes we accidentally left in the house- which was greatly appreciated.

Happy holidays
Living in this house for a week was one of the best parts of our trip to Provence. It started with a well organized welcome, without a hitch. And then we were surrounded by a beautiful garden, windows framed with newday roses and lavender lining the path to the huge swimming pool with a great view of the surrounding hills. The patio, with more potted plants typical of Provence, was perfect for dinning outside in June; Inside the livingroom was both elegant and cozy. The house was perfectly clean. We felt at home. Had there not been so many interesting sights to see nearby, and two very good restaurants in the village, we may never have budged from the house.

provencal dream
Our holidays in «La Peiregoué» were like a dream of the real, unspoilt Provence come true. We loved the personal atmosphere of the house, which is furnished with love and taste. We felt more in a friend's house and enjoyed the garden with its wonderful view, the fragrant herbs, the refreshing pool, the terrasse for apéritifs and dinners, the chirping of crickets in the night. The perfect place to relax and starting point for discoveries of the villages perchés nearby and not far from Côte dÂzur.

About the host

Hosted by Jean-François Schmitt

Host profile image
I was a banker, posted abroad at the time we bought our house, and Bargemon remained for a long time our peaceful oasis in an otherwise rather tumultuous journey. I love gardening and my wife, Jane, was a talented painter and a lady of exceptional taste. La Peirégoué is today a reflection of who we are. It is an unpretentious and genuine home, simple yet comfortable and cosy. Jane is no longer with us and our children are grown adults. So, I wished to share it with others who, like us, enjoy nature and the simple pleasures of life..

Why they chose this property

We were looking for a house cum garden between the coast and the mountains within walking distance from a village. The Var was our destination of choice since this Département is less built-up than the rest of the French Southeast. Bargemon is ideally located equidistant from sailing and skiing. It is also an active village where people live and work contrary to many others that have become tourist traps. The hinterland is wild and wonderful to explore with canyons streams and high plateaux. Even in the high season the village remains pleasant and relaxed even though its population doubles.

What makes this property unique

Contrary to many houses in Provence, our house is bright and sunny thanks to spacious rooms (notably the living-room) and large windows. In winter the sun streams in, which is a blessing. Another distinctive feature is that it is surrounded by greenery, providing shade and a cool breeze even in the middle of summer. Our trees are an exception in Bargemon.
We built our pool at a distance from the house to provide privacy and deaden the noise inevitably caused by screaming children in the water. In the same vein, the garden is large enough to include secluded corners to escape from the invasive family.
