About this property

C16th House With A Rambling Garden In A Hamlet In The Dartmoor National Park

The house is a Grade II* listed sixteenth century house with a rambling garden in a hamlet in the Dartmoor National Park in South Devon. Offering accommodation for up to eight people, the house is at the south end of a range of three dwellings, and has views across fields and moor. It is full of historical interest and original features, with carved and painted beams, mullioned windows, granite fireplaces, a stone spiral staircase, recessed window seats, and many other interesting nooks and crannies to explore. Due to the staircase, the house is not really suitable for toddlers. Comfortably but not luxuriously furnished, it is a much loved family house with a very welcoming atmosphere, showing some signs of wear and tear (not everything matches), filled with paintings, antiques, curios, books, maps and games. With the south moor and winding Dart valley on its doorstep, it is an ideal base for walkers and there is also a wide range of activities for children in the area. The south Devon coast is within an hour’s drive.

7 wonderful days
We've just had 7 glorious days staying at this fantastic huge cottage, steeped in history and oosing character. The setting was perfect, really close to the River Dart for fantastic wild swimming spots, water activities and walking. The lovely walk to the Tavistock Inn was done quite a few times! I'd thoroughly recommend for a large family gathering in beautiful surroundings.

Lovely
Perfect location for exploring southern Dartmoor with South Devon beaches an hour and a bit away: lovely house and garden which absorbed 8 adults without difficulty. Good shopping in nearby Asburton. Very narrow approach to house: we found it simpler to park on the road and carry our stuff up the driveway.

Idyllic countryside location, charming cottage
We had a wonderful stay at Cresson Hayes. The cottage itself has a lot of heart - interesting art, quirky furniture - we loved it. The location is fantastic - you can walk to the river and the pub across beautiful countryside. It won't be to everyone's taste with a simple kitchen and plenty of spiders, but we found it to be a special place for a memorable holiday and would love to return. Many thanks!

Large ancient house in Dartmoor
We had stayed here before some years ago and we were very pleased to be back. It is very quiet, there being no major roads for miles. There is a pretty, well-kept garden with sloping lawn and flowers. You can walk straight out of the door, and reach the edge of the moor in about 30 minutes. We had a wonderful holiday.

October battery re-charge!
We have just returned home from the most fabulous four day break at the wonderful Cresson hayes. Everything that was described about the house was more than accurate and was just a delight to discover for ourselves. We are two families with teenagers and a couple of young adults who found walks, scenery, good pubs and local villages to keep us all more than occupied and happy. The only thing that was wrong was that we didn't book for longer! Never mind, we'll just have to come back for a return trip. Thankyou Will and Catherine, we had a ball.

Amazing Dartmoor Cottage
This was the perfect location for a family get together. We cooked and ate most of our meals at the Cottage. The garden area was an added bonus. It does not get more authentic than this. This is a REAL Dartmoor Cottage. With cows in the field next door. Very convenient location to the River Dart (we went swimming), the various Tors, various Villages, and the south Devon coastal area. We stayed for a week. Wish it was longer. Cheers, Simon.

enjoyable stay in the South Dartmoor countryside
We had a most enjoyable weekend at Cresson Hayes - an excellent base for walking. Bedrooms were comfortable and spacious and the heating was easily boosted (important given the weather we had). The owners' guide was most comprehensive and useful. Would book again if returning to the area.

Wonderful holiday on Dartmoor
We had a really wonderful week in Cresson Hayes. It is a real gem - a unique and interesting house. It really was all we had hoped for - comfortable and roomy but very homely, with everything we could possibly need including maps and information about things to do. The garden is beautiful and we were able to eat outside almost all the time. We loved being able to walk straight from the house down to the river Dart or up to the Tavistock Inn, and although we did go further afield in the car we really didn’t need to go far to find plenty to do. A couple of other highlights for us were discovering the ancient oak woodland at Whistman’s wood, and a very good cream tea in the Cross Street Cafe in Moretonhampstead. Your neighbour Norma was friendly and helpful too. We would thoroughly recommend this house especially for anyone who likes walking and being outdoors.

fabulous family home
This is the perfect house to stay in on Dartmoor. Steeped in history and in a superb location but still close to Ashburton and the A38 for easy access. The description is accurate, all the rooms are very spacious and the property is very well equipped with tea towels, washing up liquid, plenty of crockery and utensils for cooking proper meals. The oven is straight forward to use. The property was clean, and is clearly well looked after. Communication from the owners was excellent with detailed instructions including step by step guidance for finding the house. We were also greeted on arrival by the owners representative and given a tour of the property and further information about the heating and oven operation. I would certainly recommend the property to family/friends and would love to stay here again myself for another holiday. The nearby pub (accessed via footpath through fields) served good food. All in all I cannot praise this property enough.

We are a brother and sister who a few years ago inherited this family house on the edge of Dartmoor. We love spending time here, but it is a long drive from London where we both live and neither of us gets down as much as we’d like. Until now, it has been used only by family and friends, but we’ve now decided to make it more widely available. It is very much a family home not a holiday let – not everything is new, not everything matches – and we hope that visitors will enjoy its character as well as its great location.

Why they chose this property

For over twenty years this house has been the Dartmoor home from home for our large extended family. We love the whole area, particularly the river, moor and tors on the doorstep - you can hear the distant rush of the Dart from the garden - and the cliffs and beaches of the south coast, a 45 minute drive away. The house is the end house in a very quiet hamlet of old granite houses, with sweeping views from the garden and windows. You can walk straight out of the house up on to the moor or across the fields down to the river. It therefore feels very remote but is in fact only 15 minutes by car to the local town which has excellent amenities.

What makes this property unique

The house is a wonderful base for exploring Dartmoor. There are lots of places of interest and activities for children in the immediate area, and the A38 provides quick access south to the coast. The nearby small town of Ashburton has a wide range of shops - delis, hardware, antiques, books, walking gear. The early sixteenth century house has bags of character, with a granite spiral staircase, mullioned windows and carved and painted beams. The decor is comfortable not smart, and the rooms are full of antiques, books, artworks and curios. The long garden running down the hillside has many secret corners which are fun for children to explore. There is plenty of space inside and out, and it is a great place to spend time whatever the weather.
