About this property

Country House With Bluebell Wood In Dartmoor National Park

The property is the principal part of this Victorian country house. Inside, you will love the sense of occasion created by the many period features including specially commissioned stained glass windows and a sweeping staircase. After an exhilarating day on Dartmoor soak up the atmosphere of a house previously owned by William Le Queux and Sudan's first president after independence. Outside, the property is reached by a tree-lined private driveway, shared with a handful of neighbouring properties. The private grounds which extend to thirteen acres, include specimen trees, and are a nature lover's paradise. Regular visitors to the bird feeders include woodpeckers and nuthatches. Enjoy the spectacular sound of the dawn chorus, and go to sleep listening to owls in the wood. If you are lucky you might see a badger, fox or deer. You will love playing croquet on the sunny lawn, gin and tonic in hand, while you barbecue the catch of the day. Your dogs and children will love running around in the ten acres of bluebell wood, making dens, climbing trees, and then flopping by the fire. The many natural and man made attractions of this lovely part of Devon are on the doorstep if you can drag yourselves away. The property has been recently refurbished and sympathetically restored.

Great place to stay
Spent a week here with friends and families. First impression as we entered the house was wow! Loads of space for us all, log burner lit in the evenings, the lawn and grounds were lovely with occasional call of peacocks. Just needed another week or so to further explore Devon.

Great place to stay!
We recently stayed here for a week with friends and our children. It was a lovely place to stay! We played games in the garden and explored the grounds on the sunny days and on wet days it was lovely to relax and enjoy the huge living room and fire. The kids loved how big the house was for playing all kinds of games, and my husband managed to spend time drawing in the dining room as he loved the desk by the window. It was also a really good base for all the places we visited. Thanks for letting us stay in such a lovely place, I don't think there was a thing that wasn't thought of to make it enjoyable . We had a great time!

Family break
Lovely property and perfect for a holiday with several generations of the family. Everything was provided (towels, linen, plenty of cooking pots, crockery etc). Amazing gardens and grounds in a very peaceful location. Everyone agreed that we should like to return for another stay in the future.

A wonderful escape in a beautiful part of Devon
We were completely blown away by the size and period detail of this property. Nine of us (of various ages, big and small) enjoyed a week in this wonderful house. Brilliantly equipped for self-catering, with comfy beds and nice linen/towels, we couldn’t have asked for more. Communication with the owner was outstanding and the generous welcome hamper a very thoughtful touch. We loved waking to the birdsong, and hearing the peacocks at night. Truly special. We hope to return. Thank you.

Wonderful House
We arrived at this lovely house and immediately felt at home. Nine of us in all, various ages. Heather had been in touch with us before we arrived and was also available by text during our stay. Heather sent a gift for the younger children and also left a hamper with some lovely produce and a bottle of champagne. We made use of the log fire in the sitting room the first day as it was raining. It was really easy to light. One son and his partner cooked for all of us, during our stay, and they found the Kitchen fully equipped for their needs. The BBQ also was put to good use. Buckfastleigh and Ashburton have very good shops selling fresh local produce. The garden is large and safe, plenty of room for playing Badminton, (not very well), but with enthusiasm. Bedrooms were large and we all slept well in the comfortable beds. There is an impressive library throughout the house. Everything from the Richard Feynman Lectures to the classics, travel books and books for the children. Out and about: We used the outdoor pools at Ashburton and Buckfastleigh, Horse Riding on Dartmoor for some of our party. Car rides to Paignton Zoo and Beach.Visit to Greenway, Totnes and much more. We would like to have spent more time in the house and gardens. Heather's personal touches shows how much she cares and wants you to enjoy her home. All in all a wonderful stay in a beautiful house.

This is a truly wonderful property, full of character and space.
From the moment we arrived we felt comfortable and at home. The house is so well equipped with lovely furnishings and exquisite stained glass windows and the whole ambience is warm and welcoming. Our border terrier loved the vast grounds, where peacocks roam freely and we enjoyed playing boules and croquet on the lawn. The weather was beautiful and we enjoyed barbecues with our friends. The local pub does excellent meals and the pubs in Buckfastleigh are a short drive away. We took the train from Buckfastleigh to Totnes and were lucky to see a huge otter in the River Dart by the station. We have already recommended this property to several friends and know that they will not be disappointed.

A beautiful house set in lovely gardens
We had a great week in this property. The house itself is wonderful, beautiful architecture with lovely furniture. It is well equipped with maps, walking guides etc. The kitchen is set out well and has all you need to cook meals if you choose to do so. The gardens are lovely and the house is in a beautiful part of Devon with easy access to walks on the moors. Heather could not have been more helpful in ensuring that all our needs are met. Overall highly recommended.

Lovely house set in beautiful grounds.
We spent New Year in Heather’s wonderful property. From the moment we arrived we all felt at home, from welcoming hamper to log filled baskets. Heather had taken care of our every need and totally unexpected, sent presents for my four grandchildren as she was in France at the time - totally overwhelmed. Book this property you will not be disappointed. Sally Nicolet and family

Christmas with family and good friends
10 of us stayed for the Christmas period in this beautiful house, I was worried at first that we would all fit it due to the fact of us being two families but I should not have as we fitted quite comfortably. The sitting room with its cosy sofas and log burning stove and beautiful Christmas tree with sparkling lights meant we could all snuggle in for the evening watching “It’s a Wonderful Life” perfect! We visited the Abbey at Buckfast which was breathtakingly beautiful, we went on long walks with the dogs, visited the local pub, met the alpacas, and stroked a few sheep, in the garden of a morning the family of peacocks would visit. I could not have wished for a better Christmas, the house was amazing and we laughed so much, sitting around the dining room table sharing our day with people we hold dear .......How lucky are we! Thank you to Heather for making our stay so comfortable and letting us book your wonderful home. Would definitely recommend!

Amazing House
I have to start by saying that Heather (Owner) is the most friendly, helpful and accommodating host you could wish to have. Going the extra mile is an understatement. Heather acts as a one woman concierge service. We were staying at the house due to our daughters wedding in Ashburton. Heather took it upon herself to provide phone numbers of taxi firms and contacted one in particular to see if they had an 8 seater minibus etc. She could not have done more for us if we were family. The house is amazing, full of character. Everything works. Shower nice and hot. The drawing room is large and cozy. So relaxing in this room. Difficult to stay awake when the wood burner is being used. Did not sit out in garden as wedding preparations took up all our time. The garden is very large, well kept and very peaceful. I have no doubts at all in recommending this house.

Stunning house, filled with character!
On arrival at Hewson Court, we were speechless. The house is magnificent, the gardens spectacular and the location perfect. Before we even arrived Heather had impressed us with her communication and correspondence. Her attention to detail is extremely impressive, making the stay even more perfect. We had the best week ever, exploring the local area and wider delights of Devon. We did not want to leave, we will certainly be back.

Beautiful House, Wonderful Holiday
We spent such a wonderful week at Hawson Court last July, that none of us wanted to leave. From the outset Heather, (the owner ) was fabulous, so friendly, kind and helpful and went out of her way to make sure our stay was extra special. The house is more than beautiful and completely blew us away. It is situated in the most idyllic grounds, surrounded by woodland and meadows. It really is in the perfect location too, close to Dartmoor and within easy distance of the beach. The weather was fabulous, we were so lucky, but on the only day we had rain, we visited the beach where it was blissfully sunny. There is so much to do, cycling, wild swimming ( a family fave), walking, horse riding and exploring picturesque little villages. However, we were more than content to stay at the house and explore the woodland. We cannot wait to return this July!

Perfect holiday home
We have just spent New Year's Eve at Hawson Court and had the most perfect time! We were 4 families all with small children and the house was really suited to the size of our group. We were very impressed with the house (it looks even better in real life) and with Heather's (the owner) kindness. The booking process was very smooth and Heather made sure at all time that we had everything we needed. The surroundings of the house are beautiful and we went for lovely walks in the woods. We loved the house so much that we're already thinking of when we could go back next!

Wow wow wow!
Hawson Court is simply stunning. A breathtakingly gorgeous house in beautiful surroundings. The house is very well equipped and feels like a home from home. Heather and her family left us some lovely goodies and really pulled out all the stops to ensure our special occasion was truly unforgettable. Heather was nothing but helpful when we had any enquiries and offered so much more than we expected in the way of advice and information. We cannot recommend this house or the owners enough and will definitely be going back at some point to spend more time in the lovely house. Thank you to Heather, the family and the team at Hawson Court.

Beautiful house in a fantastic location.
"Wow!" was the response from each member of our party on entering Hawson Court. The house is spectacular, beautifully decorated yet welcoming and comfortable. There are some great walks from the property, or if you you are feeling more energetic, books are provided about walks on Dartmoor. The owner provided plenty of information on places to eat near by, but we decided there was no better place to be in the evening than Hawson Court, with a home cooked meal and the glow of the wood burner stove.

Wonderful home to stay in
We (6 adults, 3 children and 3 dogs) had a week away at the house in August. The house was more than big enough to accommodate us all. When we arrived at the house there was a lovely welcome pack of eggs, milk, cake and champagne. A lovely touch to start off our holiday. The house had everything we needed (including use of a pushchair) and the owner was very helpful with providing lots of information of things to do. The area has lots of places to go and visit with children and dogs. Overall we had a superb time and would not hesitate in staying again. Thanks for a brilliant family holiday.

Fantastic Fantastic Fantastic!!!
If you are looking for the perfect holiday home in the area please stop looking and contact Heather to make sure you don't miss out on Hawson Court. From the moment we booked, until the day we begrudgingly pulled the door shut on this beautiful house we were made to feel so welcome and invited. Heather could not be more helpful even before we arrived in terms of local knowledge, places to go, eat and things to do etc etc. Everything was such a breeze which, as you can imagine, leaves you with little doubt that the property was going to be one to remember, which it was. On arrival there was a lovely welcome pack consisting of local biscuits, drinks, flowers and things. Such a nice touch. The house itself is spectacular. Full of character and craftsmanship. The decor is in keeping with the house too with no expense spared, even down to the curtains, flooring...... We were a group of three families consisting of six adults and five children ranging from 2 to 7. Needless to say the kids had an amazing time exploring the HUGE garden, bell tent and the surrounding areas. It's such a beautiful part of the UK and this house is ideally situated to explore the stunning area of South Devon. We wouldn't bat an eyelid about recommending this place to anyone, in fact we'd insist people experience such a wonderful spot!!! Needless to say we will be visiting again!! Stunning characterful holiday home
A wonderful place for all ages to admire, explore and relax in comfort and style. Idyllic large lawned garden with fun areas for the kids to explore. The house is also surrrounded by extensive woodland and stream. This unique house is large and the rooms are all very spacious, clean and nicely furnished. The beds were exceptionally comfortable and the house felt truly grand yet cosy! It was really great to have access to so many children's books and games plus a wide range of adult's books and games too which all made for a very homely feel. The wandering peacocks added to the special atmosphere. Great for family holidays or get togethers or celebrations - we would definitely like to come back. The owner was also very generous in her provision of welcome gifts and pre arrival information - we felt very at home and very welcome. Thank you!

Wonderful house in a beautiful location, a perfect place for a holiday with children
We had a fantastic week staying on Dartmoor. The house is truly beautiful and very well supplied with all you could need. It was in a great location for accessing bits of the moor and the wood on the doorstep was a real bonus. The house was well stocked for children and they were able to explore the gardens many hidden dens. We would definitely recommend a stay here, Heather who manages the property was also very easy to deal with and very communicative at all times.
