About this property

Enchanting converted farmhouse with private pool and mature garden with seaviews

This beautiful charming 400 year old converted farmhouse is situated in one of the oldest villages in Gozo close to the capital of Victoria (1km). The house is perfectly positioned on the edge of the village but still close to the village core and overlooks a landscape of fields past San Dimitri chapel, towards the lighthouse and on to the Mediterranean sea. On a clear day you can see Sicily in the distance....

Step inside to a peaceful relaxing haven away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy the relaxing and social areas of the house and garden. It is perfect both for groups and couples alike.

The property has been in the family for over 30 years. Originally converted in the 70's by the head designer of Dartington Glass, the present owner and her family have taken great care to restore the house over the years by retaining its original simplicity and rustic charm while adding the modern conveniences. This year we have invested further in the property to make it more comfortable still with aircons in each bedroom, new bathroom, pool overhaul and other new modcons including barbecue. If you like the contemporary, it is not for you, rather it offers a simplicity retaining the old floor tiles and flagstones and stone walls while still offering all the mods and cons. It offers an authentic comfortable Gozo experience including the crickets in the palm trees, lizards in the garden, dragonflies around the pool and beautiful plants around the house.

The house itself is only a 5 minute walk to the food stores and restaurants and if feeling particularly lazy the bread man, veg man, fish man and drinks man visit the square in their vans.

The house enjoys a beautiful swimming pool designed by present owner and inspired by her travels to Thailand. The mature garden provides a perfect natural umbrella with its mature palm trees allowing for a respite from the sun and lovely entertainment space with a large old cable table seating 12 guests and another Indian marble table seating 6 and a barbecue.

For safety reasons the pool area is cordoned off very tastefully and practically with a wooden fence that runs along one side of the pool area making it safe for children and a blessing for parents who can relax while eating their lunch in the garden and not having to look up every minute to check on the children.

There is a housekeeper, pool man and gardener who look after the house. The housekeeper can also provide additional cleaning during your holiday and there is also babysitting if required.

The owner is English/Maltese and is happy to advise on any additional holiday requirements. She writes a local restaurant guide - The Definitive(ly) Good Guide to Restaurants in Malta & Gozo -www.restaurantsmalta.com and the Malta Baby & Kids Directory - www.maltababyandkids.com and organises local Artisan Markets on the islands - www.maltaartisanmarkets.com and so is the perfect person to ask advise on dining out and anything to do with children in Malta and Gozo or arts and crafts and also is the curator of Offbeat Malta Food Trails www.offbeatmaltafoodtrails.com an exclusive private history of Malta food tour of Valletta.

This unique house has been featured in two design magazines.

Idyllic House Great Holiday
Our stay in the house was late June 2018 (late post due to review section not being available on Home Away). 6 of us stayed in the property, arriving from UK & Italy. The house is wonderful, very comfortable & in a quiet location. Kitchen had everything we needed & dining area was excellent. Bedrooms were comfortable. Bathrooms were clean and tidy - only issue for the entire trip was that hot water appears only solar powered - if it runs out in evening, doesn't heat up until the sun is out (this was not enough of a problem to impact our stay). Outdoor areas were the most impressive feature, the pool & surrounds are brilliant. The outdoor dining space is fantastic. There is a great balance between sun and shade. The house was big enough to allow time away from the other people if needed, but great for entertaining. The location was great; a short stroll into Gharb & a 5 minute drive into Victoria & 20mins from ferry. Would recommend the house for both friends to get away & families. Thanks Lisa, Regards Jason

Nice house but kind of untidy and moisty
Nice house; the kids loved the many corners, stairs, roofs, and "hidden rooms”; a bit of sea view from the pool, and the area is very quiet. The pool is great and the garden has some very beautiful plants. The owner and also the housekeeper are very friendly and helpful and the contact was very kind and uncomplicated. That said, the most decisivemoments are probably found in the history of the house: The garden and parts of the house were a bit untidy and moisty. The situation is maybe different in summer when there is less rain and humidity.

Such a wonderful place to spend the summer holiday.
We enjoyed our stay in this old, rustic house on the beautiful island of Gozo. A lovely place, indeed.

A fantastic location from a different time.
We had a great time in Gozo. really quiet (but 4 bars / restaurants within walking distance) and only a 5 minute drive to San Lawrenz and the Azure window with crystal clear diving - and not busy! Very deceptive. Gharb is very quiet, hardly any tourists. The farm house is fabulous. Its 400 years old and has not been modernized to distraction. Maybe not to an american's 5 star luxury level, but remained true to its Gozo / Malta heritage with a fitted kitchen, more bath rooms than you can count and the usual mod con's while still retaining that rustic, old farm house charm. The house is deceptive when you arrive, but opens out into a very large sprawling selection of rooms surrounding an open courtyard. We went at the end of October so the unheated pool was certainly character building. Its very deep which meant it might be a quite cool at the end of the season. Refreshing when your in tho' One thing you can't get from the website pictures, if you stand next to the palm tree in the picture of the pool, and look straight ahead you are looking out over farm land to the sea. Really great views all around the property. If you need to see the sea from the pool area or the balcony as part of your holiday, you can from this one. We would definitely recommend this property. Just be aware that the pool is very cool in the autumn. Lisa the owner is very friendly more than willing to answer any questions we had and is a local herself (not someone living abroad).

"Mediterranean Memories
Romantic inner courtyard with white against blue skies, flowering vines, colourful glass tiles. Flagstone paved farmhouse courtyard inviting you outside for breakfast. The children's laughter lingers around the crystal clear saltwater pool. Evening drinks by the pool or overlooking flashing lighthouse and rustic rural scenes in the changing hues of sunset. A white stone staircase inviting you to rest in the cool secluded bedrooms. Master bedroom has you sleeping under wide stone arches with gentle breezes wafting the generous expanses of space. There is a private balcony with outdoor shower overlooking the sea and capturing the many bird calls of Gozo. We wish we had more time to stay longer.

Wonderful, relaxing holiday.
This is delightful house that was the perfect getaway for our family. There were 6 of us and we thought we might get on top of each other but there was so much space that that never happened. The house is conducive to maximum chill out. This could be by the pool or living room. The house is tasteful in decor throughout and has every amenity one could wish for. We had a wonderful time and would recommend it to anyone wanting a break.

Wonderful Mamma Mia House!
As soon as we walked in we knew we had made the right decision. A real life Mamma Mia house; blue doors, white washed walls, beautiful tiled courtyard, amazing outside area and pool (very deep). The bedrooms all had floor standing fans as they are very hot at night. The master bedroom is massive and a lot cooler than the other bedrooms. The lounge is beautiful with an area to lie down and rest in the middle which is the size of a double bed. The house has a utility room with washing machine upstairs and clothes line. There are great views from the roof. The kitchen has everything you need with a large gas stove, microwave, 2 fridges and dishwasher. The garden has a gas bbq and lots of seating. Each night we put the pool lights on and sat outside and enjoyed the heat and peace and quiet. Lidl and Waitrose are only a few minutes’ drive away in Victoria. You pass both on the way to Gharb. We took the owners good restaurant guide book out in the car with us each day and found some amazing restaurants around the Island. As the Island is only 8/9 miles long it didn't take long to get around and the driving was very easy and safe. We were looking for a quiet retreat to R&R and we got just that. We will definitely be returning.

Paradise in Gozo
located in the quiet village of Gharb, this marvelous house is charming as described. We enjoyed the rustic side of the house with the indonesian decoration touch. The shade in the garden is very appreciated during warm days (very often) as well as the pool....and the shower on the balcony ! Nancy the maid and Lisa the owner are very helpfull and kind. Highly recommanded !

A perfect October Break
We enjoyed a very relaxing October break with our two young children. They found the house enchanting and we loved staying in a house which was so full of character. The kitchen was extremely well equipped. In fact, every room is very spacious. We had a good balance of tranquility and switching off, whilst the kids enjoyed the swimming pool. Would recommend!

Wonderful Gharb Farmhouse Not To Be Missed!
If you are looking for a wonderful, traditional and spacious farmhouse, then this is the property for you! The property has 4 well sized bedrooms - one double on the ground level, a double on the upper level, a double & single (in one room) on the upper and a HUGE master room with a double, single and cot. There are 4 bathrooms – two on the lower level and two on the upper level, as well as a beautiful hidden outdoor shower on the balcony to the master room not to be missed! Upon entering the farmhouse there is a small courtyard that connects all the rooms. There is a very large living room, a dining room that seats 8 and an extremely well stocked kitchen. I don’t think I have ever stayed anything that quite literally has every last thing you need! Outside in the garden you’ll find two hammocks, a large dinning table and the best part – the pool! There were 6 sun loungers and two soft seating in the pagoda. The rear of the property then looked out to extensive farmland and the sea in the very far distance, so you’ll be guaranteed not to be disturbed here. The property was well maintained and clean, with an option for additional cleaning during our stay. The farmhouse is situated in Gharb, a small village 20 minutes north west of Mgarr where the ferry terminal is. A short 5/10 minute walk will bring you to the main church, a few restaurants, supermarkets and the bus stop for local transport. We hired a car for the day to explore the island which I’d recommend, but public transport was just as easy. The main town of Victoria was a 10/15 minute drive from Gharb, so you are never too far from anything. Lisa who owns the property was super helpful. From my first email enquiry, up until I had arrived home, she was on hand to answer every last question and make the booking process as simple as possible. I wish all owners would be this helpful! We had one small issue with ants in the lower level bedroom, but reported this once we checked out. Other than that, I would recommend the property without hesitation to any family or group of friends wishing to visit Gozo. Thanks for a great stay :)

Surreal bliss, a dreamy getaway !
A home that is the epitome of raw beauty, it is truly a hidden Gozitan gem that we were so lucky to find. The gardens and pool surroundings are gorgeous, full of grand, shady palm trees and herbs. The pagoda at the far back of the pool gives this home a really charming exotic feel. Top of the range, brand new BBQ and cooking facilities which are quite rare in holiday homes - we literally never want to leave the house so the cooking element is part of the fun for us. The interior of the farmhouse is equally dreamy, understated luxury and a simple ruggedness that we just love...it has all the space and amenities you need to truly ensure relaxation and a peaceful aura to the senses. It is both perfect for couples and also those with families/ young kids as it is all safe and the pool area is fenced, a sweet balance of romantic and fun. Even more perfect for us. Simply put, this rustic farmhouse is a treasure and it is our dreamy getaway which we look forward to visiting every summer!

Lovely, rustic, characterful place to enjoy Gozo
We (couple from London) very much enjoyed our 5 night stay in this wonderfully characterful old farmhouse in Gozo which was a great end to our holiday in Malta & Gozo. The house offers old rustic charm, mixed with lovely design features and a wonderful pool and garden with lots of trees and flowering plants. The house was bigger than we anticipated based on the photos, with a big kitchen, 2 fridges, wonderfully large and nicely decorated living room, 4 bedrooms and 4 bath/shower rooms and the lay out, courtyard with blue doors and overall look & feel is very cute. One bedroom is huge (same size as living room) with a king size bed, fairly easy to keep cool(ish) and offers basic en-suite facilities. Other bedrooms are smaller, but still decent size, though potentially slightly more difficult to keep cool in the height of summer, and offer separate basic bath/shower rooms. There is a small food shop in the village offering basic needs and larger grocery store in Victoria is only 10 mins away. There is a nice restaurant nearby (Tatita in San Lawrenz) and given that Gozo is so small, we felt the house provided a good base to discover everything the island has to offer. If you are looking for a characterful stay on the edge of a small village in Gozo and can deal with / appreciate the rustic aspects that come with an old farm house (e.g. some chalk dust, old wooden cupboards etc.) this house is exactly what you are looking for. However, if you need/want 5* hotel luxury (e.g. modern bathrooms, amazing waterpressure, airconditioning etc.) to enjoy your holiday then this is not the right place for you, but then you are probably not researching farmhouses in Gozo anyway... We loved it, could accept the small niggles that come with an old family farm house and felt like we made the right choice for our stay on Gozo. It's the kind of house you wished you could own, but for now we were happy to just enjoy it for a few days. Lisa the owner responded promptly to our reservation requests & questions and Nancy the housekeeper offered a good welcome. Thank you both for a memorable & very enjoyable stay in Gozo.

A gem in Gozo
A perfect place to be for relaxing, swimming, hiking, biking and all you wish for. An enchanting quiet place away from the hustle and bustle. The farmhouse is a gem where everything is there to enjoy your holiday. A beautiful living room with fireplace for cold winter nights and a wonderful garden with swimming pool for hot summer days. I would recommend this property to everyone! Thanks Lisa for ensuring a perfect holiday!

My family and I are English/Maltese having lived and travelled extensively across the globe and with deep connections to the Maltese Islands. Over the years my family and I have woven our lives in and out of this beautiful archipelago, finding solace and joy on the serene shores of Gozo. Our home has been a gathering place for cherished moments with our children and friends and we would like to extend its warm embrace to you too.

As the publisher of Malta's foremost restaurant guide - The Definitive(ly) Good Guide to Restaurants in Malta & Gozo www.restaurantsmalta.com, my passion for food and all things culinary has inspired me to set up a wonderful entertaining space with a large cable dining table in the garden seating at least 10 people and a smaller marble table for more intimate meals as well as barbecue perfect for cooking fresh fish from the local fishmonger. The kitchen is a wonderful space to share and enjoy cooking together with many appliances and well equipped for any a food lover.

I am also the founder and organiser of Malta Artisan Markets www.maltaartisanmarkets.com and I feel passionate about assisting local artisans and entrepreneurs on the islands and for over 12 years have created the perfect platform for these entrepreneurs. Over the years I have added artisanal arts and crafts to the house brought back from travels and also locally.

And to further encourage good food on the islands I am the curator of Offbeat Malta Food Trails - exclusive private tours of Valletta and the history of food on the islands www.offbeatmaltafoodtrails.com

Why they chose this property

Casa Palma is a hidden gem in a perfect location on the edge of the village overlooking the fields and with seaviews whilst at the same time looking out to a small square and a 5 minute walk to the centre.

The house from the outside is Arab in design with a barely a facade apart from a front door and a traditional bamboo blind. On entrance the house slowly opens up to a courtyard with rooms overlooking it and then opening up to a large shaded garden with the mature trees and on to the large pool and area.

Since the house is on the edge of the village there are some lovely walks directly from the house. Including the walk down through the valley pass Ta'Pinu Basilika and down to the valley of Meilaq and the cliff edge with stunning views across the Mediterranean.

No where is far in Gozo and we often visit the local beaches including Fungus Rock which is a 10 minute drive from the house and Ramla (20 minutes), Hondoq (15 minutes) and Xlendi (15 minutes) away. We love to snorkel and the sea is always so clear.

Our house is perfectly positioned away from the core area of Gharb but easily accessible to the amenities and restaurants - just a 5 minute walk to local restaurants and a grocery shop.

What makes this property unique

The property is a haven from the outside world which you can step into and escape and enjoy the privacy of the house and the mature garden shaded by trees or relax by the pool or on the hammock or enjoy the large cool sitting room with a natural breeze through the windows.

The house has been converted to include modern amenities including aircon in each bedroom whilst retaining its 400 year old farmhouse character. The rooms downstairs would have been stables for the animals. The feeding troughs have been converted into seating. Unlike most farmhouses some of the walls have been white washed to create a cool fresh light feel to the space.

The house is a wonderful social space with many different areas to enjoy to be social or to find a private space. You never feel that you are on top of each other as the bedrooms overlook a courtyard and the garden has different areas to relax - to be social around the large dining table or to find a quiet corner.

The large mature garden is a magical space leading out from the kitchen and the sitting room. You can sit in the garden all day as there is always shade from the trees whilst the pool is a perfect place to cool off. The pool remains cool during the summer as it has a shallow end but also a deep end allowing it to keep its cooler temperature.
