About this property

400 year old cottage near Wells, Cheddar and Glastonbury. Dog and child friendly

Set in an area of outstanding natural beauty at the foot of the Mendip hills, close to Wells and Cheddar is the ancient village of Westbury-sub-Mendip. Just a short walk from the village centre, is the Dairy, a 400 year old, stone cottage. In a peaceful location well away from noisy roads. Wonderful country walks all around and good village pub and shop just down the lane.

The Dairy is a two-bedroom, self-catering cottage, with a wealth of original features and thick stone walls. The cottage is in a sunny courtyard behind high stone walls with its own patio garden and is attached to the owners’ old farmhouse, yet is completely self-contained within 3ft thick stone walls.

The Dairy sleeps 3 plus a baby / toddler. It's a peaceful getaway for couples, families, walkers, cyclists and dog owners. All of our guests are warmly welcomed, we really want you to get the most from your stay with us and we are happy to advise you on places to visit, or discovering the hidden gems in this beautiful part of Somerset. The cottage makes the perfect home from home with everything you could need in a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere.

A stable door opens into the sunny sitting room with comfortable sofa and chairs. There is a smartTV with internet channels and DVD player, as well as plenty of DVDs, books, toys and games. Wifi with good speed. Digital radio and CD player with USB port /MP3.

The kitchen has an extending dining table, which seats up to 6. There is a Zanussi fan oven, induction hob, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave and plenty of good quality knives, cookware, utensils and crockery so that you can happily cook your own meals.

The spiral staircase, (has a built in upper stairgate) and leads up to a small landing, where there is a small desk and chair. The master bedroom has original 16th century vaulted ceiling beams and dual aspect windows with voile drapes and black out blinds. The king size bed is canopied with voiles and made up with good quality bedlinen. The single bedroom with more beams, has garden views, and has room for an additional cot. Both rooms have hanging and drawer space for guests clothes.

The shower room has a good quality electric shower, wash basin and toilet. There an additional wash basin in the master bedroom.

Outside is a large walled courtyard, with parking, shared with the owners. There is a small sun-trap patio garden, exclusively for guests, with a water feature and small lawn. A table and chairs are set under a lilac tree, with roses climbing the walls; it's a perfect place to sit and read. There is space to store guests’ bicycles and a portable BBQ is available.

From the cottage, there are many lovely country walks, including Lynchcombe nature reserve on the edge of the village, which leads up to the craggy Mendip tops and the pub in Priddy village. You'll see outstanding views of the area as far as the Somerset coast and Wales beyond. We provide maps and guides to inspire you for walks and trips. Dogs are welcome (with well-behaved owners). There are plenty of dog friendly pubs nearby, including our wonderful village pub.

Its a 10 minute drive to Wells or Cheddar, both offering interesting shops, restaurants and tourist attractions, such as Wells Cathedral, Bishops Palace, farmers market and the famous Cheddar gorge and caves.

Children are always welcome and we try to provide everything you need, such as cot, stair-gate, highchair, baby bath, step stool, night light and a changing mat, as well as plenty of toys so you can save space in your car.

Owners Cathy and Will, live next door and are always happy to help you get the most from your stay, or leave you in peace to discover the area as you wish.

Nice,
This place is a real gem. A very old building but nicely modernized which makes for a very comfortable and enjoyable stay. Nicely located in a small village, easy to get to local sites, and a great hub for day trips in all directions.

Lovely week in a gorgeous part of the country.
We really enjoyed our stay. The cottage was well presented and had everything you would need. Cathy and Will were very friendly. Weather wasnt really on our side but we did manage to explore the immediate area and followed some gorgeous public footpaths in between visiting the nearby hotspots. All in all, a nice little break!

Lovely cottage in a stunning location.
What a lovely cottage this is. It has everything you could want for a perfect stay. Fully equipped kitchen and I mean fully equipped - loads of pots, pans and utensils. We cooked every day. Everything was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The welcome tray was a lovely touch too. Local goodies and teas, coffee etc. much appreciated. The owners are really friendly and helpful too. Thanks for a lovely stay.

Perfect cottage in the perfect location
We had a great week at this very attractive cottage, which was ideally located less than 10 minutes from Cheddar and 15 from Wells. It was very peaceful and cosy, equipped with everything we needed. Things were arranged so well that we hardly needed to consult the information manual on anything (e.g. things helpfully labelled). We appreciated the night lights that automatically came on when you got up during the night and the blackout blind provided for the second bedroom. Parking for our car was right in front. Lovely treats were waiting for us - we particularly loved the cheddar cheese. The cottage was spotlessly clean. Beds were very comfortable and blankets provided in case we were too hot or cold. We would highly recommend it for a break in Somerset.

A Haven of Peace and Calm
"The Dairy" is a little gem, hidden away in the depths of the Somerset countryside. Ideally located for visits to grand and imposing Wells Cathedral, or educational and exhausting Cheddar Gorge and caves or quirky and just 'out-and-out' weird Glastonbury. A little further afield is the East Somerset railway recalling the days when the Great Western line really was great and at the other extreme, the seaside at Weston-super-Mare. The village has a well-stocked shop, and the Westbury Inn provides an excellent welcome and great food. Would be happy to return any time.

Beautiful cottage
Cathy is a friendly host and she provides pretty much everything one can think of. The welcome basket was a lovely touch along with a welcome message on the blackboard. My son especially loved the popcorn and she even popped some milk in the fridge. The cottage is bijou with so many little touches that make it special. The bed is unbelievably comfortable in the main bedroom. The location is so quiet and at night one can see so many stars. The location is 10mins by car from Wells and Cheddar. Would definitely recommend The Dairy.

A lovely COVID SAFE break
We had a lovely relaxing break from work in this very charming cottage in a quiet and peaceful rural area. The cottage is small but very well organised, and has everything you need. Perfect size for a small family . We partucularly want to commend Cathy for very high standards of cleanliness- from a 3 day break between rentals to spotless interiors we felt safe and well looked after in these difficult times. We enjoyed lots of walks and visits to surrounding beauty spots and woodlands- plenty to do without going indoors. Supermarkets only 3 miles away and a small local shop 2 mins walk for bits and pieces. We enjoyed playing with Otto and Sunny! Would highly recommend Dairy Cottage for a 'Covid safe' break. Thank you Cathy and stay safe! Navin & family

Cathy and Will own The Dairy. We have lived in the main house since 2000 and raised our family here. The house had an attached cottage, which was originally a threshing barn and diary. The old dairy has been carefully renovated into a comfortable holiday home and have been hosting guests since 2003.
Our family has now grown up but keep coming back! We have a small dog Otto, a friendly cockapoo. He doesn't go in the guests areas.
We are delighted to be able to share this beautiful place with our guests and have met so many lovely people over the years, we have been hosting guests since 2003, but still are always looking for ways to improve the experience.

Cathy and Will Hancock

Why they chose this property

Walking up the hill at the back and looking down at our home, we feel fortunate to live in such a beautiful place. We are surrounded by magnificent and varied countryside. From the craggy Mendip hill tops you can see the coasts of Wales and North Devon. Below us are the wild Somerset levels, wetlands full of birds and flat lanes perfect for easy cycling.

We are only minutes away from England's smallest cathedral city of Wells. Or the exciting and very different cities of Bristol and Bath, with all the culture you could wish for.
Parts of the house date back over 1000 years. So we are just the latest custodians to enjoy living in this special place, and are happy to share this with our guests

What makes this property unique

As we live next door, we are always happy to advise our guests on places to visit and help them get the best from their stay. However we are also careful not to intrude and let you enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

We have stayed in many holiday lets over the years and have incorporated the best ideas into The Dairy. We are always striving to ensure our cottage is the best it can be. It is well equipped and very comfortable. It is warm and cosy in winter and cool and comfortable in summer, so you can relax and enjoy your holiday.
