About this property

A Restored Wagon Barn On A 1790's Farm.

The Cottage is a completely renovated 19th century post and beam wagon barn boasting a wonderful open floor plan with wood and stone tile floors throughout. The main floor has a fully equipped kitchen for guests, a bathroom with shower, and a spacious sitting area with WIFI and a large flat screen smart TV. The large loft bedroom features a queen size bed. Up to two additional guests from the same booking party can be accommodated on a very comfortable queen sleeper sofa in the main living area (no children under 10 years old). In all there are over 1,000 square feet of pure privacy.
Guests will be treated to spectacular western views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, particularly at sunset. Open a window and fall asleep to the sounds of cattle grazing or the call of spring peepers. Enjoy the unfiltered night sky filled with stars and lightning bugs. Take in the wetland that runs through our property providing additional treats from Mother Nature including bald eagles, great herons, hawks, Canadian geese, and red foxes (after all, this is Virginia hunt country). Sit at the fire pit patio (an old silo slab) and enjoy an outdoor meal or glass of wine.
Daily continental breakfast of organic fresh fruit, yogurt, and pastry. Organic orange juice, milk, half and half, cereal, coffee and tea are stocked in the kitchen. We source most of our goods from local farms and vendors. Guests are welcome to bring additional items to cook.
Dunthorpe Farm is more that just a cottage B & B. It is the restored 1790's farm of Kelly and Philip Foltman, and includes Dr. Foltman's veterinary practice and several personal horses. They also share their home with two cats and two dogs which guests are asked to enjoy en lieu of bringing their own pets. The cottage is not suitable for children under 10 years of age.
Inquire about discounts when booking 7 or more nights. No hidden cleaning fees.
The booking is for the entire cottage and there are no shared spaces. We have consistently received 5 stars for cleanliness. We clean and stock the cottage with eco-friendly items to tread lightly on the natural environment, because every day should be earth day!

Long weekend in Harper’s Ferry

The Cottage was the perfect place for our three day weekend. The rental is immaculate with many small touches (including complimentary breakfast snacks delivered at 7:30 am!) that set it apart from other rentals. Kelly and Phil were helpful with local recommendations. While we originally planned on focusing our visit in nearby Harper’s Ferry, Round Hill and Purcellville are also worth a stop. We would absolutely stay here again.

Great Getaway!

LOVE the cottage! Everything is exactly as described/shown, but better in person! The cottage is delightful, well equipped with everything you need for a perfect stay. Enjoyed watching the hummingbirds right outside the huge picture window. Beautiful scenery can be enjoyed from the cozy couch or on a leisurely stroll around the property. Deer visited the farm every evening. Fantastic scones & fruit delivered fresh to our door in the morning -- thank you so much for that special touch! Highly recommend and hope we can come back for a repeat visit.

Paradise

Perfect place to getaway from it all! Quiet and tranquil. Kelly and Phil are great hosts. The house is spotless clean, has all the amenities possibly needed, wonderful fire pit to spend evenings outside watching fireflies, but most of all it has the charm! This was our third time staying and we can’t wait to be back!

Beautiful Place to Relax

We were in town for a wedding and this property was the perfect place to stay! The owners were helpful, kind and made a delicious homemade breakfast each day! The property was spacious and very clean- the perfect place to unwind. If you enjoy peace and quiet, a sky full of stars, access to hiking and local wineries/breweries, and waking up to a scenic view with horses, this is your place!

Absolute Gem in Horse and Wine Country, VA

My wife and I just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary at The Cottage. Phil was an amazing host (his wife was away on a business trip), and he took great care to ensure all of our needs were met. He even allowed me to drop off some surprise items for our weekend in the early afternoon of our first day prior to our scheduled check in. The Cottage was one of the cleanest VRBOs we’ve ever stayed in. The special touches of having fresh pastries and organic fruit delivered each morning was a great touch. We enjoyed the fire pit as well. We will definitely be returning.

Amazing Cottage B&B

The cottage was lovely and couldn’t have been nicer. Kelly and Phil were superb hosts and were available and willing to accommodate us in every way. The restored cottage is quaint and comfortable, nicely decorated, and well equipped with all the amenities of home. There is a fire pit next to the cottage where we enjoyed coffee in the morning and star gazing at night. The farm is beautiful and full of history. The location is great and is a short distance from many of the wineries in the area. Harpers Ferry is close as well and is an interesting place to visit. We enjoyed our relaxing stay and are sure to return. A big Thank You to Kelly and Phil for their hospitality. We hope all the guests enjoy Kelly’s homemade jams as much as we did.

A peaceful, beautiful getaway!

Kelly and Phil's barn cottage is the best!! An absolutely perfect place for a several-day solo retreat to read, regroup and work on personal projects in peace and solitude. I could not recommend it enough! I could have stayed for another week, easily, and when a snowstorm blew in I was more than happy to be "snowed in" there. (In fact I pretended there was more snow and ice outside than there really was in order to justify hibernating in this perfect hideaway.) There is everything you need, and then some. One trip to the grocery store for my own necessities and I was all set for days. Breakfast each day was LOVELY and delicious! I had the gift of growing up in western Loudoun, and their Hillsboro farm is the peaceful rural environment that I remember from my childhood - which is becoming more and more rare by the day. It's the Loudoun that I miss and carry with me through life. Thank you SO much Kelly and Phil - your home and farm are so lovely. Thank you for sharing it, and for all of your hospitality and kindness!

Wonderful country setting and guest house

Beautiful upscale guest house with charm and character. Surroundings were wonderful, and the owners dogs were so cute. Homemade breakfast treats were over the top. A very relaxing setting. We stayed there as I was racing at Summit Point, but we would go back again just for a nice quiet weekend getaway in a heartbeat.

Who could ask for anything more.

The cottage is a wonderful and quiet accommodation on a beautiful horse farm in Northern Virginia. The location is close to historical sites, wineries, distilleries, and beautiful country drives. The cottage is comfortable and homey. Kelly and Phil are wonderful hosts and were responsive and friendly. The only negative is the main floor bathroom with an upstairs bedroom, but it worked fine. I hope to be able to return to the area and to the Cottage at Dunmore Farm again.

About the host

Hosted by Kelly and Phil Foltman

Host profile image
Kelly and Phil love northern Virginia and enjoy sharing all that the area has to offer to guests. While not working at their day jobs they enjoy riding their horses and working to restore and maintain the farm.

Why they chose this property

The farm sits on 48 acres of land in conservation easement and across from another 100 acre parcel in easement. No additional development can occur on either property. People who stay at our cottage marvel at the rural landscape.

What makes this property unique

We have consistently received 5 stars as hosts.
While we do live on the property in the main house, we engage as much or as little as our guests prefer, but are always available for questions or to help make your stay enjoyable.
When you book at The Cottage, you are our only guests. The entire cottage is for you and your guest to enjoy alone. Relax on the patio or cozy up to the fire pit. Feel free to walk the fields and gravel roads.
