This is an annexe that was converted in a 4 bedroom house with a private pool and furnished patio for al fresco eating meals cooked in the built in BBQ. It is placed in a quiet location, just 3 minutes walk to the centre of Alvôr with supermarkets and amenities. Tastefully decorated, all bedrooms are modern and 3 of them are on suite shower and have AC, with direct access to the pool terrace (2 twin bedrooms and a double bedroom- one twin bedroom has a direct independent access from the pool terrace). The extra twin bedroom with AC as well.
Alvor has a number of good restaurants with acceptable prices. It is a lovely old fishing village that has lately become a popular place for holidays. It offers great food, happy people and great beaches. The beaches are fantastic with rocks, lovely sand and unique waves. It is half an hour’s walk to the nearest golf courses.
The Village: itself is a maze of cobbled streets and shady little squares with lots of lovely bars and cafe's. The originally 16th Century Parish Church was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755 and still has a good example in its main doorway of the craftsmanship of the Manueline era of architecture. The small village of Abidaca, situated on a slope to the east of Alvor, has traces of a Roman settlement. There are quite a few British ex-pats here but that does not seem to have an affect on the village.
The Food
The restaurants here are excellent; the quality of the food is way above anywhere else in The Algarve. Make sure you sample the fresh fish, especially the sardines. We ate in a different restaurant every night and were not disappointed once, weather it's the food, the impeccable service or just the décor and restaurant itself, I cannot a think of a single thing to grumble about. Unfortunately our visit here was back in the days before I started to take notice
The fishing village of Alvor is situated on the estuary of the river, Rio Alvor. It is well known in Algarve history because King João II died in there in 1495.
Although the earthquake wiped out most of the traditional Moorish village in 1755, you can still see remains of Alvor’s history in places such as the 16th century Igreja Matriz with its beautiful Manueline arches and pillars.
Despite steady developments since the dawn of tourism in the 1960s (especially on the eastern side) the buildings are mainly low-rise and the charm of the old town with the narrow cobbled streets leading down to the harbour on the lagoon of the river estuary still remains.
