About this property

Restored 18C coastguard cottage on the shore of the beautiful Kenmare estuary

Pier Cottage is a sensitively restored 18th century stone coastguard's cottage which can be rented throughout the year as two totally self-contained units. This is the 'West End', sleeping up to 7 in 3 bedrooms. (The 'East End' sleeps 4 in 2 bedrooms - see property 8235078 - , and the whole Cottage, sleeps up to 11 - see property 8250937 .) Situated one mile west of Castlecove, just off the famous Ring of Kerry, Pier Cottage is only 50 metres from its own shingle beach and immerses you in the wild natural beauty of Kerry. It is Ideal for all types of activities such as hiking, fishing and golf. However, you can simply relax outside the Cottage, watch the seals play and literally feel the cares of the world drift away....and, after sun set,you can nestle up by the fire, guarded against the elements and listen to the cries of the curlews … whilst you sip an Irish whiskey!

Please note: We can only accept full week Saturday - Saturday bookings in July and August and a minimum of 5 nights during May, June, September, Easter, Christmas, and New Year periods. At other times, start/finish dates can be more flexible by arrangement but must be for a minimum of 3 nights.

Excursions:
The Cottage is an ideal base from which explore the many fascinating areas in this, the most scenic corner of Ireland. Two of Kerry's most visited sites - Derrynane House, home of Daniel O'Connell, known as the 'Liberator' and Staigue Fort, Ireland's best preserved pre-Christian stone fortress are within 15 minutes drive.
You can head north to Killarney with its famous lakes, north-west to Waterville, Ballinskelligs and Valencia Island, from where you can take an unforgettable boat trip to Skellig Michael, recently made famous as the stunning location for the last scene in 'Star Wars - The Force Awakens'. To the south lies Bantry Bay, which is reached via spectacular mountain passes. Kerry and West Cork are dotted with wonderful tropical gardens, especially beautiful in May and June.

Activities:
ANGLING AND BOAT TRIPS:-As you will see, there are several very experienced and fully insured boatmen happy to take you on a variety of sea trips...most have informative websites - Katherine knows them all and will help you make the right choice!
DERRYNANE SEA SPORTS:-Located in one of the safest and most picturesque little harbours imaginable, Helen and her experienced young helpers offer a huge variety of sea sport activities for all ages during the summer months. All details on their excellent website!
GOLF:- The golf courses of Kerry are legendary! Four of these are within 3/4 of an hour's drive of Westcove and many more a bit further afield but still well worth the journey for serious golfers...
WALKS:-Kerry is a walker's paradise - from gentle strolls over sandy beaches to more challenging hikes over craggy hills - and our favourite local walks described here are ideal for dog owners, but please be sure to keep them well under control, especially on the hills where there are always sheep around. We suggest that the more serious walkers amongst you visit www.kerryway.com At 200km the Kerry Way is one of the longest - and certainly the most scenic signposted walking trails in Ireland. The 3 legs worth considering and easily walkable from Westcove are - 'Waterville-Caherdaniel', 'Caherdaniel-Staigue', and 'Staigue-Sneem' - details are on their 'trail description'.
SEAWEED DISCOVERY WALKS AND FEASTS:-John and Kerryann Fitzgerald run Seaweed Workshops from their base in Caherdaniel: Their love of nature and all things marine has lead them to focus on seaweed which they have been harvesting, eating and experimenting with for many years. Kerryann uses her culinary skills to create delicious dishes from hand harvested local seaweeds.Click here to see what they can offer at Westcove. Contact John on 086 1062110 or email seaweedwalks@gmail.com
BLUEBERRY HILL FARM (about a mile north of Sneem on the Killarney road) is truly family friendly. They offer an amazing variety of courses and activities for all ages, and the Family Fun Tour is a fantastic outing for children.

Owner's note… All our visitors seem to agree that the unique, magical location of this cottage surpasses all their expectations – no description or photograph can do it justice! However, being only 30 metres from the very rocky seashore and close to the pier itself, Pier Cottage can be a hazardous choice for those with very young children – they would certainly need constant supervision.

A beautiful and serene spot.
The location of the cottage is simply amazing. A short grassy stroll to a small stony beach, which has a host of amazing wildlife, including otters, seals, crabs and much more. The views from the house is incredible, and the facilities at the house are very comfortable. Three well-sized rooms were more than enough, and with a reasonable Wifi connection to boot (circa 3-5Mbps). The area is very rural, so make sure you bring some supplies. The nearest reasonably stocked food shop was at Waterville, a winding 30 mins drive away. There is a local shop a mile away for the small essentials.Local things to check out include the Iron-Age Fort, the amazing beaches, Valentia Island (including the Skellig Experience), and the Blind Piper pub!The wonderful host was always there where we had any questions and couldn't have been more hospitable.

Perfect for us
The location of this cottage is wonderful. Perfect for 4 adults although would be a bit tight for 7. We had a lovely stay with so much to do in the area. We went on several walks from the cottage. Highly recommend.

Kerry at its best
Nothing beats being right on the water with spectacular views no matter the weather. House is well stocked and organized and was perfect for our family of three adults and two teens. Stairs could be challenging for us golden agers, but there is a nice ground floor bedroom so its fine.

Beautiful Location
The setting is very beautiful - there are seals in the cove and you can access the water for a swim from right outside the cottage. The cottage itself is warm and clean and has a good range of kitchen equipment. The location affords easy access to an array of sites (Ring of Kerry, Skellig Ring etc) but also feels removed from the hustle and bustle. Highly recommend.

We loved the pier cottage!
Everything about pier cottage was wonderful. The location on the Ring of Kerry makes it ideal. The views from the cottage were gorgeous. It was super clean, and had everything we needed to prepare meals. Susannah and Katherine were so helpful and made us feel very welcome. The pier cottage will definitely be on our list of places to stay on our next trip to Ireland.

Stunning location but a bit dated
Super friendly communication with owners. Amazing location. Beautiful. Our boys loved having the beach in the back garden. I loved the views. The cottage itself was too dated for me. I think it would be possible to keep the charm of the original cottage and update it significantly inside. It felt dusty and the downstairs bedroom smelt a bit dank and that was in summer. Its a shame as I loved the location.

Beautiful, quaint cottage
What a lovely little cottage on the SW coast of Kerry County. Our family of 6 found the cottage spacious for sleeping, though a bit cramped if we were to stay in for any period of time. The view is amazing, and the location is secluded but really wonderful for exploring the peninsula-about 20 min drive to a nearby village for basic essentials, but 45 to Kenmare for a more thorough selection. The housekeeper (who is not the property manager) did not reply to text or calls prior to or during our stay. This was an issue as we had ordered a meal to be available in the fridge upon arrival-but it was frozen and there were no instructions on how to heat the items. Otherwise, I think the cottage was well cared for and felt clean enough. The property manager offered extensive, detailed lists for nearly anything and everything the area has to offer. Additionally, she makes recommendations to help guests with their travel in the area. She was prompt to reply at the booking stage, but became completely unresponsive after our stay other then sending a bill for the food that was ordered. Overall, I think the property is lovely, though remote. The property manager and house keeper are doing okay at hosting, and we hopefully just had a one-off experience. The value is great for the property!

Gorgeous Location
The view from the West Cove property was incredibly beautiful. My kids didn’t want to come inside. All they wanted to do was play by the water, collect rocks, and explore! Catherine, the property manager, was also a friendly host who made us feel welcome. A wall heater was not working, but it was promptly fixed by Catherine’s husband. The property is old though and in need of updating. The walls need new paint as flakes of paint covered the countertop when the breeze blew the curtains against the wall. The beds were a 3 out of 5 for comfort. Downstairs toilets took some effort to flush. Some of the amenities could use an update — the tv and dvd player are very old and outdated. The dvd selection was misleading as we planned to watch some kid movies with the family and many were empty boxes. The communication/check-in aspect was new to me. I was trying to communicate via the VRBO app messaging tool as usual, but owner was using email, and we missed some important communications. We straightened that out though. One suggestion I could make is it would go a long way to have either a small welcome basket with some amenities or at least a warning that you need to bring supplies. For example we had to buy our own garbage bags once we realized there were none provided. We stayed here for about ten days in the off-season. Be warned there is not much to do unless you come in the summer. After day four we were ready to move on. Most everything was closed in Caherdaniel. Sneem and Waterville are a little more lively, but are about 20-30 minutes away. Kenmare is about 45 minutes or more for a proper grocery store and good shopping. In total, it was okay for our family, but wasn’t the most comfortable or amazing place we stayed. It is not recommended for a romantic getaway until efforts are made to modernize. We made some great memories though and soaked in the views.

Wunderschöner Urlaub im Pier Cottage, Ring of Kerry
Wunderschönes Ferienhaus im Herzen vom Ring of Kerry.
