HISTORY
An 1893 cottage built in the center of a double lot on water’s edge near the head of Linekin Bay, enjoyed and maintained by the family for five generations. While retaining the charm of a Victorian era open-stud construction, it has entered the 21st century with modern conveniences. This house was featured in “The Hand of the Small Town Builder, Vernacular Summer Architecture in New England, 1870-1935.”

BEDROOMS
Four Bedrooms - Sleeps 8, Beds for 8

Bedroom 1:
Queen size bed with over the bed reading lamp. Two windows; front window affords a high point view of Linekin Bay.

Bedroom 2:
Large room at end of the hall in the back. Queen size bed with reading light, two windows; side one gives partial view of the bay.

Bedroom 3:
At rear, Queen Size bed, two windows., no water view.

Bedroom 4:
Downstairs off dining room, one single bed, one camp bed, one window. Also a rear door leading to laundry room and bathroom.

Each bedroom has antique oak bureaus and mirrors, with closets for clothing. The duvets are handmade, and there are electric blankets for cooler nights.

DINING ROOM & LIVING ROOM
The living room has a large modern picture window with another great panoramic view of Linekin Bay as well. Double doors lead to a full length porch and domed cupola flying the American flag. A stained glass window on the stair landing offers a unique red tinted view of the rising sun and bay.

Another feature of the living room is the fireplace made from the pebbles, stones and shells found on the beach. The fireplace has a propane-fired Jotul stove that, on cool nights will heat the entire living room and give warmth to the upstairs bedrooms as well. A large flat screen 32” HD TV, and board games are there, too. The dining room can seat ten comfortably with the addition of two more leaves, and a side door leads to the porch.

KITCHEN
The kitchen was expanded some years ago and now has a large stainless steel sink set in a Formica countertop. There is a large refrigerator (new 2012) with a mini refrigerator in the back hall.

The five burner electric glass-top stove is new, as is the Bosch dishwasher in 2016. There is also a propane Rinnai heater on the back wall. A toaster oven microwave, Nutribullet smoothie blender and two coffee makers (traditional & Keurig) help to make a kitchen our great grandmother would not believe!

Besides the appliances already mentioned, it is fully stocked with pots, pans, dishes and utensils. Every-day dinnerware is on the kitchen shelves; finer dinnerware is in the dining room cabinet. Whatever is in the pantry cupboard is yours to use.

The supermarket (Hannaford’s) is 3 miles back to the first traffic light at Rte. 27.

BATHROOM
One bathroom on first floor off the kitchen and laundry room. Completely renovated three years ago. Large modern shower stall, marble vanity and sink, toilet. Front window lends a peek at Linekin Bay. Towels and washcloths are new as are the bedroom linen.

The back hall has a newer washer and dryer. and a wall mounted cabinet with first aid supplies, as well as other paper goods

YARD & PORCH
Outside, the side porch has a propane Weber grill, leading to the full front porch where a central round table under the cupola dome offers a great place for breakfast and coffee while watching the bay’s activities of swimmers and boaters using the public wharf and dock just two houses away. A great spot for fishing and swimming!

Keep your ears alert for the cry of osprey as they circle the bay looking for fish. Bald Eagles also make their own appearance from time to time, and low tide will find herons stalking the shallows, while families of ducks swim the bay in search of food as well. The honk of geese alerts you to a V formation of the large birds soaring overhead. Seagulls abound and lobster boats and all sizes of sailing and motor craft traverse the bay throughout the day. Exploring the beach for sea glass and old pottery bits as well as shells will keep kids of all ages (aren’t we all while on vacation?) busy.

32” HD cable flat screen TV, Apple TV 4k, and a radio in the kitchen, Wi-Fi, Internet, games, cards, some books.

Streaming services including Apple TV, Amazon, HBOMax, Hulu & Netflix

Spectacular Waterfront Cottage

My husband and I, along with my husband's brother and sister-in-law, enjoyed a lovely 3-night stay at this charming waterfront cottage in quiet East Boothbay. The home, with its gorgeous view of the water, is beautifully maintained and has so much character. Our wonderful hosts, Robert and Jane, greeted us upon arrival with a tour of the house, and they lovingly told us of its history. The covered porch and patio area are the perfect spot for enjoying that morning cup of coffee or for lingering after dinner to just enjoy the Maine salt air at the water's edge. We thoroughly enjoyed the living room with its fantastic view of the water with the heat and ambiance of the stove in the beautiful fireplace. We really enjoyed our stay at this cottage, and I am looking forward to a return visit! Thank you very much for your hospitality, Robert and Jane! We had a great time!

A beautifully maintained piece of history

My friends and I (6 adults; 2 couples, 2 friends) rented Bob and Jane's house for a long weekend trip surrounding our friend's wedding at the Ocean Point Marina in East Boothbay. We work at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, and were looking for a historic house on the water. This house FAR exceeded our expectations. It is the perfect mix of old and new - most of the house is original and you feel privileged that Bob and Jane are letting you be a part of their family's history. The details made it special - photographs of their family, the original fireplace and woodwork, bottles and sea glass treasures found on the water line the original windows, which Bob painstakingly cleaned and restored. The upgrades were nicely done - new stove, dishwasher, washer, dryer, and bathroom. We spent most of our time cooking, eating outside on the deck, and walking on the rocks and beach looking for seaglass. It's a magical house, and they are wonderful people. It was my first trip to Maine, and I already want to go back - and wouldn't rent anywhere else.

Summer Vacation

The house was clean and very well stocked with anything you would ever need while on vacation The keypad entry was great as you did not have to worry about carrying extra keys with you. Downtown Booth Bay Harbor was a short drive away. Views of the bay from the wrap around porch were breath taking, great spot for that morning cup of coffee. I feel the check out time is a bit early to enjoy breakfast and then have to pack up your car and be out by 10:00 am. On the not so positive side there was no sandy beach to enjoy, coast is all rocks. In communicating with the host I was lead to believe there was a sandy beach that came and went with the tides. Also the picture listed is a bit deceiving, as the water does not come all the way up to the gazebo. In order to put a boat or kayaks in the water you had to go to either public dock or further down the road at the boat launch. That meant constantly carrying a boat motor, kayaks, and fishing equipment back and forth for use. It got to be a bit tedious and I was not able to kayak at my convenience. I needed help in carrying the kayak and my husband and son were not always available as they were out fishing most of the day.

Second Time Around

This was our second two week stay at quintessential Chesebro cottage and it was even more delightful than the last.Weather was gorgeous and we took advantage of it to enjoy a Balmy Day’s excursion to Monhegan where we hiked to the Lighthouse and through the woods to Gull ‘s Cove for lunch (Hope that sneaky gull enjoyed my sandwich). Another fine day we visited Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens to check out the trolls for the third time (Sven is my favorite). Back at the cottage, when we weren’t relaxing on the porch taking in the view and harbor activity, you could find us walking at Murray Hill or Ocean Point, attending Wilson Chapel on Sundays, visiting my friend’s new gallery in the village and, of course, East Boothbay General Store, plus, not to forget the early morning serene moments kayaking the glassy waters of Linekin Bay and swimming at public dock two doors down. We ate out only once, because eats prepared in Chesebro’s well equipped and efficient kitchen were so good and the view can’t be beat! Those dinners did include both cooked lobsters and homemade lobster rolls (Ala Paul) from Pinkhams (Their potato salad is as tasty as my own).….and some fall-off-the-bone bbq ribs from Carriage House….yum! (Must also give Lobsterman’s Wharf just down the road a shoutout for their seafood delights and our very favorite in-town eatery, Boathouse Bistro). Okay, so Chesebro isn’t all about wining and dining ….there are the comfortable beds for a good night’s rest, fantastic water pressure and plenty of hot water for very revitalizing shower, THE PORCH, water views from every window and “natural” air conditioning with windows open when needed, GAZEBO for “eating out” breakfast, lunch or dinner, the great period dining room table to gather around when it’s chilly, the cozy but ample living room WITH A VIEW for visiting, quiet time, TV or games … plus in-house laundry! What did I miss about this one- of-a-kind old cottage where it’s history is told in pictures and objects artfully displayed on walls and shelves and lovingly cared for by the descendants who are still it’s owners? THE PITCHER OF HOME-BREWED ICE TEA by Debbie to welcome our arrival!! Thank you! Bob made check in and checkout a breeze and responded quickly to questions and concerns all along the way. Thanks, again!

Amazing!

The house is amazing, both in feel and history. Quintessential Maine cottage experience. Really well equipped and well managed property. There is a tidal beach and walking access to the public dock/boat launch and amazing East Boothbay General Store, all of which kept a family with a very active 4.5 year old and toddler very happy for the week. Would highly recommend.

Great location to relax

We found the house to be exactly what is advertised. Pleasantly surprised how close it was to town but still far enough away to feel safely isolated. The views are amazing, including some bald eagles nesting nearby! Hosts were very kind, responsive, flexible, and accommodating. The house is stocked with the necessities and we were even offered to use the owners condiments, cooking ingredients, etc. We had 8 people stay comfortably (3 couples and two teens). The house is over 120 years old but has been maintained very well. We would definitely stay here again and already miss it!

Wonderful spot for quiet family weekend

We stayed here for a long weekend for my dad’s birthday. Such a cute, well maintained house! There has clearly been so much attention to detail throughout the years, and it is obviously a very well-loved family treasure with a lot of information about the house and historical photos inside. It is in a beautiful location right on Linekin bay, with a beautiful view of the water and a perfect porch for having a morning coffee or evening drinks looking out at the water. The beds are very comfortable and the gas fireplace in the living room was a nice touch for a cool, early September evening when we were there. It’s an easy 10 minute drive into Boothbay harbor and everything that has to offer, though you may not even want to, as you have everything you need at the house. Also, the corner store has really great sandwiches if you’re looking for provisions for a day trip, or a quick coffee in the morning.

Timeless escape

A truly spectacular spot on Linekin Bay where the light plays beautifully throughout this classic cottage built in 1893. Walk down to the public docks to take a swim, walk a little further to get breakfast at the East Boothbay General Store. Timeless, peaceful and just enough to do while unwinding and soaking in the view. We hope to return again next year!

Beautiful, historic spot to relax and play

Two families from NH had planned a trip to Iceland but COVID-19 put that on hold. Instead, we spent a wonderful week in this beautiful, historic home in East Boothbay. We loved having coffee in the morning overlooking the water from the porch and enjoying sunsets, fireworks and conversations in the same spot in the evening. Our four kids, ranging from ages 5 to 14, all loved exploring the rocky shoreline, kayaking, and swimming. We had planned to see puffins, whales and seals in Iceland but were able to cruise out of Boothbay Harbor and see the same wildlife! The house was the perfect size for the 8 of us and we loved learning about the history of the home and the generations of family that have spent time there. It has so much charm but is also kept in fantastic condition - with all the things you could need for your stay. The owners, and their children that help take care of the property are so accommodating and responsive. Bob was so kind, he even went to the Chamber of Commerce and mailed us brochures ahead of our stay, paying special attention to altered business hours and restrictions due to COVID-19. The highlight of our trip had to be our last morning there when a lone seal put on a show for us right in the bay in front of the house! We hope to go back again next year!

A perfect Maine weekend!

Bob and Jane are such kind, wonderful hosts! The location of the house was just perfect. East Boothbay is a lovely, quiet town and we could walk down the street to the General Store to get coffee, milk or a lobster roll! The Lobsterman's Wharf restaurant was also walkable and very good. Boothbay is just a short car ride away, but we didn't go there save one afternoon because we loved the quiet of East Boothbay so much. Our kids had a wonderful time exploring the property and clambering over the rocks by the water. They both loved the house and made us promise to return. The house is a quintessential Maine cottage with tons of history. Plenty of spots to sit and read, do a puzzle or just watch the water. Our evenings sitting on the porch watching the moon rise over the water were so wonderful. The beds and bedrooms were very comfortable and Bob showed us how to open the doors and windows in the house to get the perfect cross breeze going through the house. The house was well-stocked with everything we needed, spotless and very well-organized. Bob and Jane knew that we were arriving very late into East Boothbay so left us eggs, bread, coffee + fruit so we wouldn't have to leave the house for breakfast! We are so grateful to them for our wonderful vacation! I am sure we will return next year.

Truly amazing, historic, and picturesque

I couldn't imagine a better place to spend Labor Day weekend with friends and family. The house is what I imagine all houses on the water in Maine should be: a beautiful combination of rustic charm, breathtaking views, and comfort. We spent most of the time on the outdoor wraparound porch and gazebo, watching the tide go in and out. Thanks to the owners for letting us share in the history of this special place. Highly recommended!

About the host

Host profile image
We have had this location in the family since it was built by our great grandparents in 1893 , and have summered in East Boothbay since birth. There isn't much we have not done or seen locally, and continue to find new things every year. The sixth generation is now making use of this summer home, and we return every year to enjoy it, the neighborhood, and the Boothbay area.

Why they chose this property

Murray Hill, where the house is located in East Boothbay at the head of Linekin Bay, still retains much of the summer colony it was laid out as in the late 1880s. It is a mix of summer homes as built back then, and permanent residents on a quiet, dead end street (Murray Hill Road).

What makes this property unique

The town dock and boat launching ramp are both located on Murray Hill Road. Traffic is light, and many people walk the road for exercise for themselves and their pets. It is a short half mile walk to the East Boothbay Genral Store at the head of Murray Hill Road. for several newspapers, ice cream, great sandwiches, wine, beer and snacks.
