About this property

Sobreira Cottage, private and exclusive use in the summer, in Horta Vermelha

Sobreira Cottage @ Horta Vermelha | experience Earth
We have this and only another similar cottage in the farm, all private, booked one at a time during summer for exclusive use of all spaces, around the cottages and in the farm.
You will immediately feel Horta Vermelha’s energy, character and personalised detail. From salvaging used or old furniture, maintaining the whitewash and original pigments, to keeping the Mediterranean weeds instead of planting an artificial high-maintenance lawn, dedicated effort and care were put by both Sónia and João.
The result is a genuine diversity of colours, textures, organic and authentic housing features, while being connected to all beyond the Horta.
The surrounding space offers inviting spots under great cork and fig trees, the Japanese Medlar, amidst the century-old olive grove, the old natural spring under the oldest walnut tree, or the most appreciated eco-friendly refreshing tank. You may walk up the meadow, scent the wild garlic, the spontaneous lavender flowers, and a multitude of other herbs, while spotting the sheep and cows in the vicinity. You may be lucky and see some other companions up there.
We invite you to take in the richness of the area with independent spirit, at your own pace.

Heerlijke koele vakantiewoning in gerenoveerde boerderij. Alle noodzakelijke dingen aanwezig. Prima onthaal.

Great stay in Alentejo in local style
When I decided to visit Alentejo in Portugal this year, I looked for a house to be built in the local style, with some green space around it (for my kid) and with owners who commit to particular values of sustainability, local development and authenticity. I found all three in Horta Vermelha. Regarding the house, we stayed at Sobreira cottage. The house itself is built in local style, with stone flooring and walls, well restored and decorated with clean style by the owners. In itself it is not a magnificent house; it follows the simple, clean style of a peasant home. The garden was absolutely great. Orchards of olive trees, chestnuts, plum trees, bushes of blackberries, lavender ... for us, it was the best part of the stay. In the morning, we could collect directly from the trees some plums and blackberries for breakfast; in the evening we would eat some nuts or grab some herbs for cooking. We could literally take a walk around the property. My kid had a blast running around. Finally, the property and house are maintained using local knowledge. Insects and weed were kept at bay using natural processes. It gets wild enough to be enjoyable without getting too wild to be annoying. Also a small creek runs through the property, making watering a natural process.

Boa escolha

A little piece of Alentejo paradise
Hidden just outside Beja, you can have the experience of a true Alentejo place: the houses have been magnificently restored, but with respect to tradition, you have plenty of space to walk around and the service is very nice and friendly. We spent 4 wonderfull days with our children who by the end of our little holiday asked ' why holidays aren't made of 100 days?'.

Host profile image
Sónia Melo: I am dedicated to providing guests and visitors at Horta Vermelha a holistic experience of the best and most fascinating features the Alentejo has to offer. My work and commitment to Horta Vermelha is paired with my activities in research and policy in international development.
João M. Gil: In Horta Vermelha, I hope guests will link to the world, from local to global scale, from the roots in the soil to the world. I transversely apply these ideas in my work also as a Engineer and Photographer, as I do in my engagement with Horta Vermelha.

Why they chose this property

Horta Vermelha is fully Licensed and Registered as "Country Cottages/Rural Tourism" with no. 673 RNT, Portuguese Tourism Board.

What makes this property unique

COVID-19:
Following the local national recommendations (from DGS, in Portuguese), we have our Contingency Plan, all important frequent touch points are disinfected, as well as furniture, clothings, etc, in between different guests' stays. We use the recommended disinfectants. Hand-gel and masks are also provided for guests. All staff/personnel uses their equipment for the appropriate cleaning.

The eco-pool is also disinfected between stays.

Due to the pandemic, our decision has been to rent one house at a time, of the two cottages that we have. This means that guests do not share anything with others, and that there is alternate use of the cottages, in between stays.
