About this property
Bright and breezy home from 3 bedoom home right on the beach
Kualuka, meaning ‘to welcome’ in the local language Kidigo, is a home from home a stone’s throw from the stunning powder-white sand and turquoise water of Kenya’s Galu Beach. The spacious veranda has places for seating, dining and snoozing. This three-bedroomed house has a double bedroom and a twin bedroom with shared bathroom and shower and a second twin bedroom with bathroom and dressing room and its own access.
The house overlooks a turquoise lagoon made by a reef in the Indian Ocean. It is a vast natural spa and its warm, clear water is heavenly for swimming whether the tide is in or out. The dazzling sand is so fine and so white that you can walk on it barefoot at any time of day. Amid the tropical gardens, there is a wealth of bird life and an assortment of monkeys which play in the grounds and sometimes on your roof. You can hear the sound of bush-babies and cicadas floating in the breeze of the star-studded nights.
Your personal chef and housekeeper take care of the housework. Good food is important to us and we try to make sure that our chefs are both talented and versatile. Fresh seafood is brought to the door by fishermen and "bicycle shops" also deliver vegetables and fruit. Your chef can shop for you or there are supermarkets a short taxi or tuk tuk ride away. There are a range of restaurants from beach bars to real Asian sushi nearby.
You can be as active or relaxed as you like. Yoga, exercise classes, massages and beauty treatments can be arranged in your own house. Activities including watersports, deep sea fishing, snorkelling, cultural and nature tours, camel and horse riding, golf and tennis are all easily arranged. Game Parks are accessible both by road and by air. We can give advice about or arrange travel to other areas.
Kualuka House is part of Four Twenty South, a family-owned property with five other houses discretely positioned in three acres of tropical gardens ensuring privacy and security. The houses date from the 1950s and were the original rental houses in Diani. They have been gently updated with modern comforts but retain their old-world tranquility and charm.

About the host
Hosted by Hilary Lockhart-Mure

John and Hilary both grew up in Kenya and live permanently on the property. Hilary's parents bought Four Twenty South in 1966 when she was and her brother Dominic were children. The name Four (degrees) Twenty (minutes) South refers to the latitude as there were no physical landmarks to indicate where it was in the coral rag forest which lined the coastal strip in those days. Things were very different then with bush pig, lion, leopard and even the odd elephant frequenting the forest. There were three hotels in the area, palm thatched and tiny: Jadini, owned by the Trench family, the name a combination of Maxwell and Nellie's childrens' initials and the Swahili suffix -ni, meaning "the place of" ; Two Fishes owner by Mr and Mrs Fisch and Sandy Bay later called Trade Winds and the hottest spot on the coast in the 1970s and early 80s.
Why they chose this property
The view over the lawn running down to the beach and the sea is widely regarded as the best on the Kenyan coast and there is an authentic old world atmosphere with monkeys in the trees, birdsong in the morning and cicadas at night. The night sky is stunning and the full moon quite breathtaking.
What makes this property unique
The layout of the houses allows you total privacy with the security of being close to others. The location, raised up overlooking the white sand and turquoise sea is the best spot on the coast, if not in the world.
