Great Location and Large House

The house has a great location and is close by to all mountain activities. We had a large group of friends with children who stayed at the property. It met all of our needs! We would suggest dusting of light fixtures and updating the picture of the bunk room (located on 2nd floor-not the basement). Overall, we had a fantastic time!

High country retreat

House was beautiful, well stocked, and very spacious. Great layout for a family to enjoy time together and has enough small spaces to get a couple minutes peace and quiet. And the hot tub was awesome!

A home away from home!

If you’re looking for a home that can accommodate a large family or family gathering then this is it! The home has all the porch space you could possibly want, all the dining space you will need and everything you look for in a home away from home. We had a family gathering here recently and all of our family had places to hangout at and relax. The kids played in the game room, all the men hung out outside and enjoyed the view while the women and young ones stayed inside and enjoyed their time together. Just wanted to say we will definitely be staying here again and appreciate the home owners for sharing their home with us!

Beautiful Property, but so many issues with rental company

We rented this home for a family reunion to celebrate the life of my grandfather who recently passed away. He loved Boone and the NC Mountains. While the home was beautiful, it was an incredibly stressful weekend due to a lot of lies/omissions from the rental company. First issue (minor on its own), we were told less than 24 hours prior to our arrival that the hot tub was not working—ok, things happen. While we were offered an alternative home, it was not offered until after some of our family had already arrived in town, and it was in a completely different city, and the alternative was not comparable to what we could have found on our own with more advanced notice. Second issue (a legitimate safety concern), upon arrival, the house is 85+ degrees inside and we find that the HVAC (heat and cool) is not working. Further, we found out only after calling the rental company, that this issue was known in advance, would not be fixed during our stay and that the rental company had never planned to disclose the issue to us. This was NOT pleasant or safe for my 84 year old grandmother who had just lost her husband of 50 years nor was it pleasant or safe for the 2 month old infant and 1 year old staying with us. This issue was exacerbated by the unseasonably hot and cool weather that occurred during the course of our stay. Third issue, we had a very established BASKETBALL SIZED WASP NEST under the deck. Upon walking out on the deck, the 1 year old was immediately stung and her foot left bleeding and quickly swelling. THANKFULLY, we learned that she did not have a serious allergy or this could have been much worse. Fourth, Fifth and Sixth issues, we thought that the 4th/5th issues would be the last, a simple issue of the microwave being broken and small carpenter ant problem around the sink, but to our surprise, when my grandmother was crying about the celebrations being over and we were packing, the fire alarm goes off. She ran all around the house frantically trying to save photographs of my grandfather, but as it turned out not only was there no fire, but the fire chief confirmed that his was a recurring issue with the house and that they had been trying to get the rental company and/or owner (or anyone at all) to get the alarm fixed as it was wasting town resources and frightening tenants. We had reserved a considerably priced house for a remembrance for a special man but were met with a series of failures to disclose known issues.

Beautiful views and a memorable stay!

This home was perfect for our entire family of adult children and grandchildren! The kitchen was totally equipped and spacious to accommodate all 14 of us! We enjoyed the hot tub and game room as well for fun. The high ceilings in the family room with beautiful views was my favorite space!

Amazing! Views were breathtaking!

This cabin had everything we needed to entertain the children and adults. The hot tub was a hit. The spacious kitchen was equipped with everything we needed. The speaker system that runs throughout the house and outside was amazing! The spacious living quarters, each with a fireplace, gave it that extra cozy feeling. We will definitely be back. During the winter months I highly recommend 4 wheel drive to get up the road.

Great house for a group of all ages!

A High Country Retreat was the perfect property for our family of ten--parents, grown children and grandchildren. The four granddaughters loved staying together in the bunk room, as well as playing all over this lovely and comfortable house. The adults loved the fabulously well-equipped kitchen, and the design of the house allowed for both privacy and togetherness -- we gave it an A-plus for three "master" bedrooms, great furnishings, and wraparound porches with gorgeous views. Our only disappointment was the time it took for the rental agency to complete a needed hot tub repair--wish we could have used it earlier, as it is delightful. Our thanks to the owners for such attention to detail.

Excellent place for family vacation!

We LOVED staying at the High Country Retreat! The kitchen was amazing! It was a well stocked chef's kitchen with everything we needed. We loved having the room downstairs to watch movies, play games and work puzzles. We will definitely stay here again!

Perfect place to explore the N.C. mountains and relax with friends!

High Country Retreat was the perfect size for our three families over Spring Break. It is right outside the downtown portion of Boone, with lots of cute shops and restaurants. About 25 minutes from Appalachian Ski Mountain and 30 minutes from Blowing Rock. The home is well stocked, very clean, with comfortable beds and plenty of areas to hang out. The fireplaces in nearly every rom were so cozy, and the hot tub was a big hit. The kitchen was the perfect place to cook meals for our group and the dining table provides the perfect spot to share meals together. The home is located on the top of a very steep road. 4 wheel drives are required and they were absolutely necessary. We got about 10 inches of snow throughout the week and on the days of heavy snow, even the 4 wd’s couldn’t make it back up the mountain. We didn’t mind being snowed in at all at the High Country Retreat, though! The management company does send out a snow plow for the road once it stopped snowing and we were able to make it to the Appalachian Ski Resort ( which was the perfect place for our kids to learn to ski) We had a wonderful time and will cherish the memories made at the High County Retreat!
