About this property

Luxury historic lakefront mansion and estate in truly stunning setting

Lakeview House & Estate is a luxurious private mansion directly on the world famous Lakes of Killarney.

Steeped in history and character, this elegant home is an ideal holiday destination. Whether you choose to enjoy all the House and Estate has to offer or to explore the region's scenery, golf, fishing and other activities, you will be spoilt for choice.

The House boasts wonderfully spacious living areas, all with high ceilings and impressive plasterwork: a Dining Room seating up to 18, a Drawing Room with an open fire and a very atmospheric Library with a wood burning stove. A very comfortable kitchen/breakfast room has steps out to the garden and there is a studio/playroom which works as a less formal sitting area.

There are 4 principal bedrooms and 2 additional bedrooms allowing for a maximum of 10 guests. (The house is large and could sleep many more than this but we limit occupancy to 10 so that every guest has space to lose themselves as well as different spaces to be all together). All the bedrooms have really comfortable beds to ensure you relax completely.

Being on the Killarney National Park, the stunning views have been protected from development: from the house you can see across the lake and mountains for miles with no sign of human habitation other than Ross Castle, a restored ruin beautifully lit for your benefit at night.

The estate covers over 100 acres with many private walks. Boat trips and fishing can be arranged from your doorstep and the surrounding area has fabulous walking, climbing, cycling, horse riding, golf, fishing and entertainment facilities.

The house was built in 1869 for the family of the present owners, kinsmen of Daniel O'Connell ('the Liberator'). It replaced an earlier house they had occupied since 1820, prior to which the land was owned by the MacCarthy family, the last of which line is the owner's mother. Other than 30 years, the family's occupation of the site goes back about 1000 years.

Historic Ireland

Wonderful host and beautiful property. If you are looking for peace and a unique historic experience, this is the place. Whiskey distillery on property and amazing views with no neighbors in site. All amenities and activities are close by and we enjoyed a week that we will never forget.

The perfect vacation in Killarney

History, beautiful scenery, abundant space and whiskey. This is where you must stay if coming to Killarney. It is perfect in every way for a family gathering or friend trip. It was a special treat to experience this home and hospitality of the O'Connells.

A glimpse of heaven

A sense of deep tranquility descends as one approaches the property along the tree lined, sweeping drive, with views of the mountains in the distance. The house coming into view with a giant, spreading cypress opposite the grand portico is approachably majestic, like coming upon a resting Bridgerton set. As the lake and its islands come into view behind the manicured expansive lawn, with its gravel paths, gates and surrounding wildwoods and mountains, the setting takes your breath away. It is impossible to describe in words, or even show in pictures, this indescribably beautiful, peaceful place. This is a place to restore one's soul. The interior of the home is impeccable, tastefully decorated, and radiates charm and comfort. It is grand, but comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked, Sir Maurice made sure we had a stock of basic provisions, as well as several bottles of his excellent whiskey (produced on premises) and a couple of bottles of champagne on arrival. The beds and bedding are extremely comfortable, the showers have great pressure, and the whole thing is kept absolutely pristine by the unobtrusive, charming housekeeper Kinge. The house is, among other things, an art and history museum, especially as it relates to the O'Connell's and their related clans. The memory of the great Liberator (for whom the whiskey is named), Daniel O'Connell, is pervasive. Maurice and Francesca are perfect hosts. I wish we could have stayed longer than four weeks.

A slice of heaven by the lakes

Lakeview House is a slice of heaven next to the most majestic lakes and mountains - easy access to super walks, cycles and running routes. Maurice was a truly excellent host. We will definitely be coming back. Mike & Pauline

Like coming home...if you were a billionaire.

It's hard to know where to begin...because there were so many aspects to the Lakeview experience that made it my top trip of all time - and I'm an old bird who's been many places. First, Killarney is my most favorite place in the world. Full stop. And in our many previous visits, my husband and I would stay at the Aghadoe Heights because of the view, which is breathtaking. Never did I think it could be improved upon. Alas, I was wrong. The best way to describe it this... staying at the Aghadoe is like watching your favorite actor on stage, but staying at Lakeview is like having a drink with them. There is an intimacy with the surroundings at Lakeview that cannot be duplicated by staying in a hotel, no matter how nice. Second, the people…Maurice, the owner (and it is his home) could not have been more welcoming – we showed up three hours early, almost unannounced, and he did not bat an eye. He was available throughout the week by phone to answer our questions as we came upon them. Peter, the estate manager, was equally accommodating with helpful hints around the manor and in town. Bernadette, the house manager, was both “there” and “not there” at the same time, keeping things stocked and tidy. Third, the manor…. Beautifully appointed and So. Much. History. Maurice was more than happy to share the highlights. Finally, the grounds…upon turning into the main gate, you know you have made an excellent choice. There are 100 acres to explore if you wish, and I encourage you to do so. Bottom line, please don’t go there! (because it may be the week I want to book)

We had a wonderful time at this lovely home set on the lake. We were 4 couples traveling to play golf and tour and the location was just wonderful. We enjoyed beautiful nights outside along the lake and also fun times walking the grounds. Great for families and couples.

Wonderful Lakeview House

We had a wonderful family vacation at Lakeview house with two grandparents, two parents, three children, and one young adult. From the house and the amazing waterfront behind it, you see no other buildings except a distant castle on the far shore silhouetted by mountains and Killarney National Park. It is as though the entire park is on the grounds of the house. The rooms inside are large and full of tasteful art or historical curiosities. The family and the house have an interesting history that we enjoyed learning about. The host was very kind with his time and attention. The location is close to lively Killarney and perfect for amazing drives on the Ring of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula All members of our party loved the trip. We would recommend this place to anyone.

Fabulous vacation!

We had the pleasure of staying for a week at this beautiful estate. The accommodations were absolutely incredible. Sir Maurice O’Connell met our group of 8 at the estate. He walked us through the home and told of his family history . In the kitchen there was coffee and breakfast and snack items along with two bottles of Champagne for our stay. The home was impeccably clean along with lovely towels and bedding. The grounds are magical. The view from the kitchen looks like a postcard, absolutely stunning. The housekeeper and groundskeeper were there every day, and when we had an issue with the lock on the door, it was immediately taken care of. The location of the estate could not be better. Easy taxi ride into Killarney, or just as easy to drive the 10 minutes and park. There is a golf course less than a mile from the estate, and we had the opportunity to get in nine holes the day before we left. There was a detailed binder with suggestions of day trips, restaurants, etc. We hired the chef that was suggested for two dinners because it was so delicious. I would highly recommend Nial as an outstanding chef! I would rate our week as five stars. If I get the chance to travel that way again, I would most definitely look forward to staying here again!

Our golf group arrived and were totally stunned by the house, its view, the history behind the house and its owners. Would recommend this house to anyone for golf, weddings or just getting away. You will not be disappointed and it's well worth its value! Roger Kaz

Memorable Vacation

One week at Lakeview House was holiday heaven. It truly lived up to expectations, and even more.  The location is magnificent, views absolutely brilliant, peace on earth. The facilities in Killarney, just 10 minutes away, were  second to none, good restaurants, some shopping, and plenty of attractions in the area for all ages, families, etc. And this area of Ireland is a photographer's delight.  The house amenities provided by the owners were top notch: welcoming note and some food to get us started, booklet of how-to's, things to do in the vicinity, and everything was as it should be - even the appliances! It feels very much like home away from home and provided all the best that a vacation in Ireland should offer. Car drives in the area some of the most beautiful in Ireland, around the Ring of Kerry, Beara peninsular, Dingle  etc. And knowing you were driving back at the end of the day to Lakeview House made the days very special.

Even Better Than Expected

We came as part of a group of old friends and were wowed by Lakeview House. The house was immaculate and very well serviced by the staff - everything exceeded our (high) expectations. The weather wasn't always perfect but we found plenty to do, both in the house and the town of Killarney. Thank you for a great holiday!

A Dream Come True

Having traveled to Ireland for a golf trip in 2008 where we moved from location to location to play different courses, my husband and I talked about how wonderful it would be to stay in one place and play the surrounding courses. I found Lakeview House on the HomeAway website and our dream came true in late September. The location is exquisite - one of the few properties on Lake Leane with ever changing light and shadows. The grounds are magical with winding paths and magnificent trees - my only regret was that because of our golf schedule we didn't have more time to wander! We played several courses in the area all within 15 minutes to 2 hours from the house which made the location ideal for a golf trip. The house was the perfect size for 10 of us including our driver. The bathrooms are all updated and the bedrooms were beautifully appointed with wonderful fabrics and linens. The library and sitting room had fabulous fireplaces that we enjoyed in the early evenings after a long day on the links. The staff went out of its way to be helpful and welcoming. I would definitely use the services of their cook. After playing golf all day it was so wonderful to have dinner waiting for us in the evening! I was in constant contact with the owner in planning the trip - he could not have been more accommodating. He genuinely cares for the property and seemed to enjoy sharing it with people who appreciate how special it is. We feel honored to have stayed there and will never forget our time at Lakeview House.

Lakeview House

In September 2012, our family had the pleasure of staying at Lakeview House for a week as part of our tour of Ireland. The magical view across Lough Leane, which we now know is the largest of the Lakes of Killarney, shifting constantly with the changing light, was hypnotic in its beauty! The house has a wonderful intimacy but with plenty of room for everyone to have their privacy too, which was perfect when we had friends to stay as guests. All the bedrooms were very comfortable and the owners have clearly spent a great deal of time and thought installing tasteful modern bathrooms and kitchen fittings. The house is packed with reminders of the history of the owner’s family and Ireland's famous 'Liberator', in particular. This was an unexpected and interesting plus for us and our guests. The housekeeper and the cook the owners recommended for a couple of evenings were both friendly and efficient, and the owners were always extremely accommodating when it came to any additional requests we had. One day, the owner organised for us to take a boat out onto the lake and visit a small island where the ruins of an early-Christian monastic library could still be seen, another magical moment. We were lucky with the weather but when it did rain, we and our guests would happily sit in the beautiful library to read. Our daughter loved the piano and our guests spent hours at the billiard table. Altogether staying at Lakeview was an unforgettable experience. We will definitely be recommending this house to family and friends. Andrew & Jennifer, France

Amazing Place!

My family and I spent 2 weeks in Ireland at the end of last summer, the highlight of which was our stay at Lakeview House. We've travelled a fair bit over the years but have never stayed anywhere that had our jaws dropping as much as this - the views that change constantly from ominous grey to Mediterranean blue to red sunset are every bit as engrossing as the photos suggest. The house itself is very gracious and comfortable ith huge rooms and full of centuries of family history everywhere you look. This is combined with modern works of art and furniture so that it feels fresh and up to date. Our favourite was the library filled with old books and a roaring wood burning stove. The owners have modernised the house and added levels of comfort and plumbing which were probably not there when it was first built! I'll be back....
