About this property

Pet-friendly Old Florida Cottage on the Forgotten Coast

Experience old Florida! Minutes to Indian Pass and St. Joseph Bay State Park, and less than half an hour to historic Apalachicola. Located in the heart of town, but still on a quiet residential street, our cottage is a welcome alternative to the condo scene of Panama City Beach. From our fully renovated 1920s cottage, less than a block from St. Joseph Bay, you have access to everything Port St. Joe and surrounding communities have to offer. Walk to the shops and restaurants on Reid Street, two blocks away, ride a bike on the city trails, paddle your kayak in the shallow, fish-filled waters at the end of the street, launch your boat from the public marina less than two blocks away, fish the surf or the mouth of the Intracoastal Waterway, swim and sunbathe on St. Joe Beach, or just kick back and relax.

Our spacious home has three bedrooms, a den, a sunroom/playroom, a screened porch with a fan and wicker chairs, a covered patio and ample off-street parking, including space for a boat. We offer you comfortable furniture and beds, wood floors, tall windows, a washer and dryer , and a utility room to store your gear. There is a king size bed in the master, and a queen and full bed in the second and third bedrooms. The sofa in the den pulls out if you need extra space. The newly renovated eat-in kitchen, while simple, is fully equipped for your convenience, and features a GE Profile gas stove with an electric convection oven. The den and bedroom both have 47-inch smart TV for viewing movies, and high speed internet is available throughout the house. Central air conditioning ensures your comfort on the hottest days, and on-demand hot water means no waiting for showers. Bathrooms were newly renovated in 2017, with a tub-shower combination in the main and a walk-in shower in the second bathroom. On-demand hot water ensures that everyone can shower without waiting. On the back patio you will find a table with seating for 6.

The home is located on a quiet residential street, despite its proximity to downtown and the Bay. This is a perfect vacation home for friends or families, but we ask that you respect our neighbors and pass us by if you are looking to throw loud night time parties.

Location and lots of space

The home was walking distance from town. It had a little bit of everything there to use. The house was big enough to hold my big family allowing us to stay out of each other's hair. We all had hot water no matter how much water we used. The fridge had condiments and kitchen was well stocked. The only thing we needed was a water hose to rinse the sand off our feet around back and a second outside trash ben to take to the road. After the trash ran, we brought the can back to the house but somehow there was a large black trash bag of trash in the bottom someone had put in it which left us with less room to add our trash in before leaving back home. The washing machine tore up but the owner got someone out there as fast as she could. Wonderful communication on the phone. We loved the home. We would definitely stay again. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay. The kids loved it.

Perfect Location

The home was perfect for our family. Very clean and well stocked. Just a block from the bay where we watched beautiful sunsets. Short walk to the many shops on Reid Street and many restaurants. Looking forward to returning soon.

Great location

The house was loaded with character, beautiful and comfortable inside although really bigger than we needed. The three bedrooms and two full baths would be perfect for a family or multiple couples. Check in was simple after we talked to the property owner although Vrbo had given us the wrong combination to the lockbox. Wi-Fi was also easy to access after we spoke to the owner and got the code. All the appliances were high end and available for our use even though we chose to take advantage of several local restaurants instead of cooking. The location was in walking distance to the beach as well as several eating places. Honestly, it was the perfect Vacation!

Beautiful old house!

The house is gorgeous and very clean! It has everything you need to cook! It also has a washer, dryer, table and chairs outside, charcoal grill, screened in porch, office, 2 bathrooms and much more! It is within walking distance to the water, park, gas station, shopping and restaurants! 5 stars in my book and definitely staying there again!!! Thank you for your hospitality, Christa

HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT

My family and I travel frequently and we’ve stayed in a variety of rental places but this one was by far the most unclean, unkept, deteriorating and there was an odor due to dirty linens, couches, chairs and floors. The home’s flooring had visible holes. The air filter needed changing, there’s no telling how long it had been in place. The grass was high and needed to be mowed. There were burnt out light bulbs that needed replacing. One bedroom light had a short in it so it flickered when turned on-obviously we kept it off. The kitchen cabinets and drawers were filthy. The cabinets were full of old food items. The dinnerware and glassware was dusty due to being on shelves and not properly cleaned. The coffee pot was dirty and we did not use it. I bought a coffee pot to use. Also, big roaches accompanied our stay. I had to buy bug spray to help with that. As I was setting up the sofa bed I went to look for linens in the cabinet in one of the rooms, I found one comforter and pulled it out to discover it being covered in dog hair and dander; it was clear that is was not washed after last use. Because of that issue I was forced to wash bed linens in every room down to the mattress to ensure that my family had clean bedding to sleep on. We spent the first two days washing bedding, kitchen items and spraying for bugs so we could survive the 8 nights we had reserved. NEVER AGAIN! I regret not leaving immediately. I feel sorry that my family had to spend vacation in such squalor. There was just SO MUCH wrong with the house! I can’t write about every last detail. The town of PSJ was great! We had wonderful meals and enjoyed the beach at the state park. I have spoken to owner and sent her many pictures to document the problems. She said she plans to remedy the situation. Maybe our terrible experience will help save another family grief and sorrow. The Clarks

Comfortable and clean

The house is spacious with old southern charm and beach atmosphere. Original hard wood flooring in part of house. Kitchen is upgraded and two bathrooms updated. AC worked well. Beds were comfortable. Our visit was for relaxation, fishing and beach. Location was great!! The back yard is big with covered area. There was room for boat and place to clean fish if needed. Located close enough to downtown to walk to eat at local restaurants.

Lived like a local

The house was clean and well appointed. I loved sitting on the porch for meals and being able to see a sliver of the bay. We walked from the house to downtown every day. Also walked to the walking trail and to the water. By the end of the week, it felt like home.

Great house

This house was better in person than in pictures. Geat house with plenty of room. The house really has everything you need. The location is central to shops and restaurants in Port St Joe. Several public beaches close by. Just a short drive to Cape San Blas or Mexico Beach. This was a wonderful stay for our family. The home is very roomy and the location is perfect!!

Charming

This house has everything my family needed. AND was clean and well-maintained AND had a lot of character. this is not a condo or a new home or a place built as a rental. This is a genuine old-school Florida coastal home. It has personality, but is comfy and will take good care of its tenants. I should also add that the house did not have any bad smells...like mold or cigarettes or paint or carpet, etc. Big carport to drop off all your stuff out of the weather. Laundry room/mud room at the door so you have at least some chance of keeping the sand out. Bathroom with large shower right off laundry room so you can clean up as soon as you get home...again keeping that sand out. NICE kitchen with higher end appliances than usually found in a rental. Big drop leaf table and enough chairs....plenty of room to eat for my family of 6 and more.. Hardwood floors that give you a hint of the long history of this home. Doors in every doorway so you don't have to hear your loved ones noises if you don't want to! 2 living room areas ..great with kids King sized bed sits low which I like, and was very comfy. Front porch is screened in with comfy furniture. Plenty of dressers, nightstands, etc for your stuff. Great communication from owner. Even sent me an email telling me what is open and what is not around town while recovering from hurricane Michael. Location: Not ON the water, but a block away. Close enough for me to walk with my kayak on a cart, to the bay and go kayaking. I noticed I could see the light house from the front porch and the restaurants, shops, and bay front park are all within walking distance. I would stay here again for sure.

About the host

Hosted by Linda Vance

Host profile image
Like many people, I always imagined Florida was nothing but condos and retirement communities. In 2010, I came to a training in the Florida Panhandle and discovered the rich natural and cultural heritage of the Forgotten Coast. My partner and I bought this house as a winter getaway, and have spent winters here since 2015, fishing, kayaking, and enjoying the friendly community. During the summer, we're back in Montana, where I work as a biologist in the Rocky Mountains.

Why they chose this property

We picked this house because of its location, less than a block from the Bay, because of its traditional charm, and because of the laid-back neighborhood. Even in the height of summer, this is far from party central; the house is part of a residential neighborhood, where the cool Bay breezes make year-round living enjoyable. Everything about the house and the street invites relaxation.
