Greece as it used to be
Photos do not do justice to this place! In reality it is an oasis of peace and exclusive beauty in the hills overlooking bay and village of Karystos. We were extremely lucky to meet the owners of this place, Pavlos and Marianne who did an extra effort to explain the history of the place and the amazing restauration project of the estate since they bought it in 1986. For anyone seeking peace, atmosphere of old Greek riviera, this place is indispensable choice. In a very few places, you can lodge and relax exactly at the major archeological site, place that hosted rulers of the Evia island and even Kings of Greece. This is one of the places where one knows that he/she needs to return.

Lovely location - lovely people!
The estate's villas are an excellent setting for a peaceful holiday in Karystos. They have excellent views in a historic and interesting setting. Maria, the Estate Manager, is superb - very friendly and very helpful. The Owners were also very friendly but they are only around some weekend. Although the area can get quite windy (it did while we were there!), thanks to the terracing there is always a sheltered area to relax including by the pool. In terms of restaurants in Karystos, we enjoyed Geusiplous and the restaurant in Hotel Karystion (excellent gooey Chocolate dessert) best but we ate in many other places and did not have a bad meal. Restaurant portions are quite large so consider saving some for the stray cat and dog population who are friendly and seem cared for by many locals too. The info pack in each Villa has all contact details you will need. Warning if you intend to drive from Athens then it may be much easier is get the ferry. We arrived late at night in Athens and drove (the ferries do not operate late in the evening) - consequently we arrived over 3 hours later tired and exhausted at 01:30. Better to consider staying the evening in Athens and getting the Rafina to Marmari ferry - it only takes an hour and Marmari is a straight forward 20 mins drive to Montofolio. If you are planing to holiday in Karystos then I would say that you won't find anywhere better to stay than one of the Montofolio Wine estate villas.

Excellent - superb!
The first week of August 2016 we stayed with two adults and three teenage girls in Belvedere. The house is great - ac throughout which was lovely as it was just under 40C. Washingmachine / dishwasher/ tv all in good working order. The estate is beautiful and we were given a guided tour through the Vineyard and ended up tasting the very special dessert wine. Danae and her husband Constatntino are very helpful and give interesting tips for exploring the area. The pool is wonderful. There are plenty of secluded beaches nearby - all of the beaten track do not expect mass tourism here!!! We recommend this estate highly!

We had a miraculous week in the Montofoli Estate. The house Belvedere is furnished very well and equipped, everything is affectionate and is made careful. Danae and Constantino are excellent hosts and are available really always with advice & action. They have a vast amount tips which have still given an understanding of the wonderful area with their great and small attractions to us. Pool & garden and all undeveloped outskirt areas are extremely nice and maintained very well. One has a wonderful view avon of the patio on the sea. Children are with all what belongs to them, pretty welcome. A total of one great reference for the families which would like to spend a special and authentic vacation.

A very special place
This place is special. So special that when our week's booking was finished, we stayed on and cancelled other arrangements for the rest of our holiday. The accommodation is clean, simple and basic, it is not a manicured designer villa. It is on a working wine farm, parts of which date back to 400BC - and they have the stones to prove it. This means it is a fascinating place to explore. The owners are fabulous. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they did all they could to make our stay a success. Even the farm dog went out of her way to make us welcome. The local town is quiet (in early September) with some great tavernas. And the nearby beaches are large and empty. This was the best holiday we have had for a long time.

stunning properties in a wondrous setting
We rented both properties for a week at Easter. We were a party of 10 (6 adults and 4 children) and the houses accommodated us very well. Both houses are well equipped and beautifully designed. There are wonderful views of the bay from the property and plenty of places to sit outside to enjoy them. The owners were extremely welcoming and did everything possible to make us feel at home. They recommended great places to eat, lovely secluded beaches and even the best rocks for diving into the sea. We didn't have the best weather (it was still quite cold), but we had the best holiday.

The most wonderful place!
We took a family vacation and rented both houses, five people in each one. The houses are amazing! Pretty, comfortable, clean... Lovely authentic furniture. Great view, especially from the dovecot and the pool, which is wonderful by itself. The area is very nice. You can find anything you need in karystos. For the best views in Evia - a two hour drive to Lamari area. Best of all are the staff (Heleni) - very friendly, welcoming and helpful. To sum up - a spot on place for a family to stay. We had a great time!

Perfect !!!
Perfect ! No other word to describe our stay in Montofoli. The accommodations are as described in the summary. Everything was ready when we arrived. Everybody was very kind with us and provided us with very good customer service. I would strongly recommend this location for those who want to spend some holidays alone or with their family in a quiet Greek region, peaceful environment, beautiful landscape, with so enjoyable hosts !!!

About the host

Hosted by Estate Keeper

Host profile image
Our father bought this timeless estate in ruins in 1986 with the dream to revive it. He restored the historic buildings with respect to the land and its history. He also produced a unique sweet wine, Montofoli Estate, from the vineyard he planted in 1986, following the steps of his predecessors who cultivated this fertile land.

Following the restoration, we opened the estate to the public with the wish to contribute to the cultural advancement of the region: the estate is today open to guided tours, wine tastings, private dinners and hospitality: you can book one of the historical villas – each one with a distinguished character – and spend time with family and friends. You can even rent the estate for your private events, be them weddings, festivals, conferences etc.

Why they chose this property

Montofoli Estate is famous for its uncommon, effervescent AMBIENCE that provides a sense of belonging, which can only be experienced on site. Enjoying a stay in one of the villas within the estate is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that guests treasure for years to come.

What makes this property unique

Authenticity, historical place, large surface villa, quiet, vineyard, fantastic views near a small town still authentic.
