About this property

Beachfront cottage in Calheta | Cottage do Mar

SISTER PROPERTY TO VILLA DO MAR I, VILLA DO MAR II AND VILLA DO MAR III

This very private, cosy stone cottage located just above what is virtually a private beach for the few neighbouring properties, was beautifully converted from an old fisherman's cottage that is believed to be the first dwelling on this fajã (a flat strip of land at the foot of a cliff).

The whole cottage is open plan. The comfortable sitting area is a veritable balcony over the beach and sea and is separated from the bedroom area by two doors that open the full width of the cottage, allowing you to wake up to that breath-taking view. Further back is the modern shower room and the fully equipped kitchen that still features the original bread oven.

Outside is a very private yard with overflowing bougainvillea, which features an outdoor dining table, a portable barbecue and a couple of sunbeds under a private curtained canopy, and again benefits from that spectacular sea-view. The Cottage is secluded and very private and off the beaten track and accessed via a narrow steep driveway. Itis perched above the beach, and affords astounding views - you feel as one with the ocean.

A lovely little beach hut is located right on the rocky beach 30 metres below, and shared by the three Villas do Mar, access is via a pathway with steps that leads from the level of the Villas do Mar down to the beach.

There are many walks around Calheta and easy access to the plateau of Paul da Serra, with its many levada walks, makes this villa perfectly located for walking in Madeira and for enjoying a lovely holiday surrounded by the beautiful Madeira countryside.

Madeira
Some seven hundred kilometres west of the African coast, Madeira is a stunning mountainous emerald island, lapped by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. The first island to be discovered by the Portuguese navigators in 1419, Madeira became an important resting place on the long trip to the new world. From these humble beginnings, the holiday trade was formed and this spectacular island, which used to be the favourite place of the rich and famous, is now the preferred choice of all sorts of visitors, from those seeking year-round warm temperatures to nature lovers and sightseers, sports and active enthusiasts of all ages. Culture, history, stunning nature, a myriad of sea and land activities, added to a great foodie scene means Madeira has something for everyone. No matter where you go on the island you are rewarded by fabulous scenery, tiny villages and friendly people. With a population of over 100,000, Funchal is not only the capital, but also the 'heart' of Madeira and home to many of the islanders. This makes it a busy, chic, cosmopolitan and fun city, full of shops, shopping centres, bars, cafés and a great variety of restaurants and entertainment; a vibrant, cosmopolitan town where historic splendour and breath-taking natural beauty combine with a thoroughly modern atmosphere.

Fantastic Calming Sea Views
What a fantastic calming sea view this little cottage offers! We loved waking up to the sounds of the waves crashing down below & watching the gorgeous sunset from the privacy of our patio. The location feels like we truly are on our own little island. Unless we drove out into the villages/towns, some days we wouldn't see another person. So peaceful! Bruno met us at check-in & kindly guided us to the cottage. He showed us where things were located around the cottage which we found very helpful. We were also welcomed with several items such as bread, milk, sparkling wine, fruits which was very nice for tired travelers. The rental has just about everything you might need (appliances). The washing machine really came in handy and we used the BBQ on Christmas day when we figured most restaurants would be closed. We walked down the 130 steps (yes, I counted) from the private access beach hut down to the pebbled beach 3 of the 7 days we stayed there. We saw 2 people max on each of those days. The weather in Madeira was pleasant (esp compared to winter in London) but it was not sunbathing weather (plus it rained) else we would have made better use of the nice private beach hut. The cottage was pretty clean overall but the floors were quite dusty upon arrival (we like to walk barefoot inside the house so we can fully relax). I had to sweep up the whole place first since we felt dust on our feet after we walked around inside. I did mention this to Bruno that the cleaners must have forgotten to sweep/vacuum & mop the floors, for the sake of future renters. Like the listing says, it is a VERY steep & narrow climb down a 1-lane driveway to get to the cottage (the other side is the drop from the cliff). Although it might be a bit scary & challenging for some drivers, it wasn't too bad for us as my husband is good at navigating challenging roads. However, we did make it a point to get back to the cottage before it got dark, to be on the safe side. Note - Pack (or buy) your toiletries (soap, shampoo/conditioner, lotion as they are not provided) and bring a pair of slippers (or flip flips) for inside the cottage as the living room has bumpy cobble stones. Also, we used the property booking agent (Our Madeira) to help book us a car rental. The prices were fair & airport pick up /drop off was convenient so I'd recommend getting your car rental through them also. We had a lovely & relaxing holiday. Thank you so much!

Perfekt
Sehr freundlicher Kontakt
