Great location for exploring the area. Lovely hamlet people were very friendly. Recommend the restaurants and a swim in the river. Tom was an excellent host great communication throughout.
This was our second stay at this place. We went back precisely because we enjoyed it so much the first time. The location is exquisite. The house is beautifully designed and laid out and excellently equipped. And the owner and the local caretakers are helpful above and beyond the call of duty.
It is a super-charming house in splendid isolation, with some arbored grounds. (the village is just over the river, though)
The quality of the equipment is super. There was even a Börner Hobel (essential for gratin) The quantity of dishes etc. is more suited to 2-4 visitors, while the house offers more sleeps.
In the area you can find numerous bathing spots in the local river Mare, the Orb, Lac Salagou or the Gorges de Colombiers (the latter pittoresque albeit very popular with the locals)
The house has it's own well for water, the water is hard but perfectly drinkable. This can be a real plus - all the time while we enjoyed our hard well water, the Villagers had to use bottled water because of a technical problem...
I was up and about with my bike, and apart from spotting the best bathing spots, I recommend to tour Le Causse above Bedarieux. Maybe you can spot the Mazet that is for sale there with 8ha of olive trees and forest. I could not :)
We had a nice stay despite the cold weather. But that's out of your control. The house is just outside the village, away from any crowds or neighbours. Overall, we had no complaints and had a pleasant time. We paid a fair price!
Some minus points for improvement:
1. The cleanliness of the kitchen utensils and crockery. This might have had something to do with the time of year (first holiday after winter). We had to put everything in the dishwasher once first.
2. The bed in the double room was undersized by our standards. We are used to sleeping on decent Auping mattresses and then you might be quick to complain.
3. The internet is very slow to non-existent during evenings and weekends due to the use of an old technology but there is nothing the owner can do about that. Fiber is not there (yet) in the street.
My wife and I chose this venue for a two-week writing retreat. I am working on a novel and she is working on a PhD dissertation. The location is incredibly beautiful and conducive to creative work. The house itself is well-located, well-equipped, and ready for all seasons, including a wood-fired hearth inside and a wood-fired pizza oven outside (which we didn't get to use). The kitchen is well-equipped with everything one could possibly need for advanced self-catering. Wonderful nearby restaurants, a not-so-far-away supermarket with everything you might need. Most of all, the host is super supportive, readily available and accommodating to all our needs, queries and little panics.
We spend a happy week there. The holiday started with a lovely welcoming, almost like in a hotel. The house is lovely inside and well located outside. The rang of equipment is overwhelming as the range of holiday activities. The communication with the host is excellent.
From our side, a clear recommendation. We consider coming back!
House outside village (bakery truck midday) 2 restaurants and one cafe. Good morning walk around the hill towards Bédarieux. Kitchen large and very well equipped, never had sharp knives in a rental! 2 fridges etc. walk in shower super, bathroom spacious and clean.
Deck great, bbq a bit tricky if not used to that kind. Noise from motor bikes road other side of stream apparent though. Tiger Mosquitoes during day were bad, ferocious and fast, not bothered at nigh, fortunately.
Location excellent for day trips, walking, wineries, markets, rural France at its best!
Top marks from us all, had a great stay.
Thanks Tom,
Your House is a real nice place for retreat and we really enjoy its tranquilty. It is exactly what we needed after these past months working hard in Asia. We also both agreed we have appreciated your prompt feedbacks and Adrian's and Nick's kindness.
Chemin Jardin Haut is definitely a place where we have reloaded our batteries!!!
Definitely enjoyed this haven in the middle of the nature 😊

The best equipped and most comfortable property we’ve ever rented in France (we’ve been renting for over thirty five years). We felt completely at home as soon as we walked in and coped well with the heatwave when we arrived thanks to the building itself and the fans. Everything we needed was there, the kitchen was very well equipped and well stocked. We spent happy days on the upper terrace taking in the lovely view and watching the beautiful butterflies that visited. Thanks to the excellent WiFi we were able to identify our visitors. We had some good barbecues and also, one evening, made pizzas in the pizza oven, a first for us and delicious. The house is in a quiet location but within walking distance, across the river, of a historic old town with two good restaurants. There are many notable places to visit within easy reach, and we have plenty more to see on a return visit. The property owner was always helpful and easy to contact.

About the host
Hosted by Tom Redpath
We're based in the UK, originally from London and Edinburgh both designers and currently live in Northamptonshire
Why they chose this property
We love houses and homes and Le Chemin du Jardin Haut is very much an extension of our home. We get there as much as possible juggling work and feel just as much at home in Villemagne as we do in Northants.
What makes this property unique
The house has the double benefit of being secluded but only 5min walk to the village and 10min drive to the local shops / super market, it's a pure get away, plenty of out door space for relaxing and our wood fired pizza oven provides a natural out door cooking focus
