About this property

The Old School House (Iceland) - accommodation for up to 18 people in 6 bedrooms

CHANGES FOR 2025 - ALL ROOMS WITH PRIVATE BATHROOM/SHOWER

Please note the base price is for 12 people (or less), adding additional guests will incur an extra charge pp/pn.

Our house is a magnificent converted old school house in the southern lowlands of Iceland.
The Old School House is the perfect base to explore the many attractions of southern Iceland - Gullfoss, Geysir, The Black Beach or walk in the divide between the North-American and Eurasian continental plates at Þingvellir.

Our cozy guest kitchen is fully equipped for all your culinary adventures with seating for 30+ people. Most groups self cater; however, we can provide tray bakes or a dedicated caterer if you require. Please contact us for details.
Supermarkets and other amenities are a 10 min drive away in the town of Selfoss.

We have a beautiful atrium garden (protected from the elements), which provides the perfect place to sit (or swing in a hammock) and marvel at the stunning Icelandic countryside. There are many breakout spaces at The Old School House - so even in a larger group there will be always be somewhere for you to get away for some 'me time'.

There is a hot tub which, of course, provides a perfect spot for stargazing and admiring the Northern Lights.

We have become very popular with groups organising their wedding or retreat (yoga, wellness etc). We are able to provide many facilities/amenities to make such stays go smoothly - please contact us directly for details.

Incredibly friendly

Greg and Magnea were amazing hosts. Their property is absolutely perfect for a big group like ours were. Plenty of rooms so you can spread the group out while also having big community areas to all hang out in. You could also spread out and have smaller group hangs outs as well. I could go on and on about how amazing this place was!

Old School House adventures

Great place to stay! What a special home with great hosts. It is very centrally located to a lot of amazing adventure stops. We had a group coming for yoga and there was a HUGE space to practice in and they even provided yoga mats, blankets, blocks. They really thought of everything. The kitchen is well stocked with two fridges and plenty of tables, dishes, etc. We really enjoyed our trip and would totally come back.

Fantastic time in the spacious schoolhouse

The schoolhouse was exactly what we were looking for with our large group with kids 2-6. Lots of space to play inside and outside. Good spot to explore the South of Iceland, close to the ocean as well as Selfoss. Fantastic smelling hand soap and a great Kitchen and dining hall to have meals in. The hosts were very helpful and responsive when we had questions.

Amazing property close to Selfoss

We celebrated our wedding in Iceland and chose this amazing house to stay with our friends and family. There was plenty of space for all of us and we really enjoyed the fully enclosed atrium as well as the hot tub. It was also nice that the kitchen was separate from the area with all the bedrooms because we didn't need to worry about walking people up. Greg and Magnea were excellent hosts that were attentive to anything we needed and made sure we were well taken care of. The location is close to Selfoss when there's plenty of options for food as well as 2 grocery stores and a liquor store. Rt 1 is all about 10 minutes from the house where you can stop and see many popular attractions on the way to Vik.

Family Reunion

Beautiful place to stay as we explored Iceland with day trips. The Garden room was a hit as we gathered at night to share our experiences. Magnea and Greg were very accommodating for our 50 year reunion.

Iceland wedding with extended family

We were so fortunate to find this rental as we had planned an Iceland wedding with visitors from Norway and the US. We had a large group of 22 people, and the eight bedrooms worked perfect. The beds were very comfortable, the linens were clean, and rooms were private with very little noise transmitting through the walls. The absolute best part of the property is the covered patio between the main house and the kitchen. It was a beautiful space full of comfortable seating, beautiful flowers, very well-kept, and heating lamps when needed. We spent most of our time in this space, because the weather was rather cloudy and windy. The hot tub is a fantastic addition, and we spent time in the hot tub every single day. The kitchen is large, two refrigerators, they have plenty of equipment and a dishwasher that makes eating with the big group very easy. There are lots of leftover spices, and also coffee filters. It was an absolute pleasure to stay in this space for all of us, all our guests were very happy with the experience. Thumbs up all the way.

This is an amazing property

This School House was perfect for our group. It was strategically located for all the photo assignments we were there to shoot. It was well accommodated for our group of 20 and was well outfitted for everything we needed. I would highly recommend this to anyone. Great hosts that made the stay special. They even found a guitar string for us since we broke one and we needed it for our shoot.

About the host

Hello and a warm welcome to our site or even better - in person to Gaulverjaskóli - The Old School House.
Our names are Magnea and Greg. Magnea was born and raised in Reykjavík and Greg is from the south coast of England.
We met in London in 1987 and have been together ever since!!
We have lived in London most of the time and raised a couple of awesome kids.
Since 2017 we have been working our full time jobs in London and running The Old School house alongside it with help from many different people/family and friends. We closed the business as a hostel early on and only took bookings from groups hiring the whole house - this was easier to manage from the UK.
But every vacation and spare time we have had, has been spent improving the place to get it nearer to our vision for it.
We as a family have built, painted and planted something every single vacation we have had here. It is an absolute labour of love.
In 2018 we had the atrium built and in 2021 we laid the courtyard outside and installed the hot-tub.
The exciting news is that we recently left our jobs in London, the kids have kind of left home and at the time of writing (Feb 2024) we are travelling in India and Sri Lanka for two months. Staying in other people's guesthouses, learning yoga and doing the blue sky thinking for the future.
Getting ourselves ready to be spending bigger chunks of our time in Iceland running our business!
Now, this allows us to open the rooms to be booked in between the group bookings.

Why they chose this property

We enjoy the rurality of the place and the vastness of the sky here.
We love the fact that we are near all the major natural wonders. We are also in the thick of authentic Iceland with farmlands all around us, with view of major Volcanos in the (safe) distance. We feel like we are in the middle of nowhere but only 12 min drive to Selfoss and an hour to Reykjavik.

What makes this property unique

There is a special vibe in the house that is hard to describe - it feels very homely and gentle in here. Being an Old country school - we have assumed that the happy vibes from the children linger on in here :)
The atrium garden - provides a unique space and extends the summer months a little for us and our guests
