Description

Brenton-on-sea is a friendly and safe neighbourhood, where you will frequently encounter free-roaming bushbuck (deer).

Although the apartment doesn't have sea views, there are many viewpoints, including the well-maintained Fisherman's Walk, a pathway which extends along the cliff top and which can be accessed via a pathway behind the property. Sitting on the bench placed for your convenience, this pathway offers panoramic views of the ocean.

Fisherman's walk at the Eastern end has direct access to a secluded beach, via steep stairs. This is a rather strenuous climb, especially the climb back up, which should not be attempted unless you are fairly fit. Should you elect to do the walk, the rewards are definitely worth the effort.

Brenton beach, one of two Blue Flag beaches in Knysna, is a short walk or drive from the apartment. The beach stretches all the way to Buffalo Bay, the other Blue Flag beach, some 5 km away, a stimulating, easy walk, especially at low tide when the expanse of beach is wide and the sand harder.

Once you reach Buffalo Bay beach, you can enjoy a light meal or pizza and a refreshing drink whilst watching the surfers, paddlers and swimmers frolicking in the safe surf and where you may be lucky to spot whales in season or schools of dolphins.

Brenton Bushbuck Lodge offers a ground floor apartment below the owner’s main house in the beautiful Brenton-on-sea. This quiet bay is situated on the opposite side of Knysna’s Western Head, and is surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.

This 2-bedroom apartment is able to accommodate 4 to 6 people. The main bedroom has a king-size bed, bath and a separate en-suite bathroom fitted with shower, wash basin and toilet. The second room has a double bed and an en-suite bathroom fitted with a shower, wash basin and toilet.

There are two sleeper couches in the open plan living room. There is also an extra-length travellers' baby crib available for infants.

The kitchen is well-equipped and features a stove, oven, induction plate, fridge/freezer, kettle, Espresto coffee machine, toaster and microwave and an automatic washing machine. The dining area has seating for 6 people, while the lounge/dining room has a comfy couch and 2 sleeper couches, a flatscreen Tv with full premium package Dstv channels and a Dvd player. Free Wi-fi is also available.

The patio overlooking the garden leads off the lounge through double French doors and has quality furniture and a Weber charcoal-burning kettle braai as well as a gas braai (barbeque), where guests can entertain and enjoy the sunset.

Cellphone reception inside the apartment is very limited, but Wi-fi is good, so data-based communication such as Whatsapp or Facebook messenger, Skype or Facetime calls are recommended. Cellphone reception outside the apartment, in the garden, is, however, good.

The property is home to 3 indoor-outdoor adult cats, 2 kittens and a talkative African Grey parrot. The cats generally avoid visitors. The African Grey lives upstairs on the owners' deck and can be very entertaining from early morning.

Brenton Bushbuck Lodge is within walking distance of two excellent restaurants, a small convenience store and a delicatessen. Nautical South Restaurant is a casual bistro-type restaurant, serving wholesome food. It has a small sports bar/pub and an outdoor seating/dining area with live music most weekends. Catch up on your dose of vegetables after the usual holiday fare of burgers, pizzas, pies and fries, with a plate of their delicious Sunday roasts, but be prepared, you better come hungry, their portions are generous. (only in off-season)

The Brenton Haven Hotel is situated right on the beach, affording glorious views of the ocean, over to Buffalo Bay, another blue flag beach. Dolphins and whales can frequently be observed frolicking in the waves close to the shore. You can enjoy cocktails, fine wines and whisky on the protected enclosed deck and a-la-carte meals or gourmet pizzas. Breakfast is available at the Indigo Deli. The hotel has a small gym and a swimming pool which offers visitors short term or daily memberships

Major Attractions

Absolutely not to be missed is the viewpoint at the Heads. The Heads of Knysna are a geographic marvel. From the viewpoint you may be lucky enough to spot a southern right whale – this gigantic creature finds both food and refuge just after the mating season when her calf is born. A set of binoculars may help you to spot them. From the northern side of the viewpoint, you will see Featherbed Nature Reserve, Leisure Isle and the expansive Knysna Lagoon.

The iconic John Benn is ideal way to enjoy a perfect sunset upon the Knysna lagoon. The double-decker floating restaurant is made of wood and has that classic and old-worldly feel about it. Trips to the Heads are made available daily and special orders for oysters and sparkling wine can be arranged. This is really an activity for the whole family; kids will love getting close to majestic Heads, while parents clink their glasses and enjoy spectacular views.

Take a trip to the Millwood Goldmine. An integral part of Knysna’s history, the Goldmine was established in 1858 when a gold nugget was found in Jubilee Creek (originally called the Karatara River). There are tours available on request and Mother Holly’s Tearoom will be sure to keep your hunger at bay with some delicious treats.

The Woodville Big Tree is an impressive 800 years old and 33 m tall. This massive yellowwood stands proud and silent in the Hoekwil Forest. One can make a day of the trip as there is a picnic area - why not pack some sandwiches or take something to braai? There are also several streams which children can splash in and a 2km circular trail which leads you to the Big Tree and back.

The Featherbed Company & Nature Reserve

The Featherbed Nature Reserve is a privately-owned, registered Nature Reserve and a South African Heritage Site, No. 59. It is a pristine piece of paradise situated on the Western Head of Knysna and is accessible by ferry only.

Festivals

Through the years, Knysna has developed into a festival hotspot. No matter the season you come to visit Knysna, there is always something fun and entertaining to do. From surfing competitions, to cultural literary events and even a well-supported Mardi Gras, Knysna has long maintained a selection of events for different interests. The one thing you simply don’t have to worry about during your trip to Knysna is getting bored. Plan your itinerary carefully, so that you don’t miss out.
Oyster Festival:
The Knysna Oyster Festival is one of the most popular annual events in the Western Cape. It is a celebration of the good life, with sport and oysters as its focus points. The festival has taken place every year since 1983, where it began as the Knysna Winter Festival - a combination of sport that drew people to Knysna during the quiet winter season. This year we celebrate the 35th Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival.

Marketed as the 'best 10 Days of Your Winter', the Knysna Oyster festival is spread across two weekends that promise constant fun and activities for the whole family. The sport aspect of the Oyster Festival has evolved into two major sporting events - the Momentum Knysna Cycle Tour, and the Momentum Knysna Forest Marathon. The event has grown to include more than 100 individual events, which caters for all ages and tastes.
