Great place to stay in the old historic part of city
Building has reliable elevator and the self catering apartment was bright and comfortable with well equipped kitchen. Help promptly provided for a minor repair job when we needed it. Friendly owners Sergio and Avelino (who has also lived and worked in Australia) speak English and met us on arrival at the building. They also provided local knowledge of transport and supermarkets (very small in this old part of city). El Corte Inglés department store has a large supermarket section and almost every other sort of shopping, including hardware. To reach it, take a 5 minute walk to the Metro (Blue line) at Baixa-Chiado station and proceed 5 stops to Sao Sebastião station. El Corte Inglés is adjacent to the station (you can enter store from one of the station exits) and has a whole 'Semi-Cave' floor dedicated to its excellent large supermarket and casual eateries. Sao Sebastião station Is also close to the truly amazing Museu Calouste Gulbenkian.
