About this property

Cottage attached to Moated Farmhouse centrally situated in Suffolk

The West Wing at Moat Farm is a suite of rooms with its own private entrance. Originally created for an elderly relative, it has recently been completely refurbished and is now a delightful independent cottage style property set in fabulous gardens.

Guests have free rein of the gardens: an acre of paths and modest hedged enclosures; herbaceous borders; a croquet lawn; pool garden, grass garden; purple garden; winter walk; autumn circle and rose garden. One of the largest wooden bridges in a private garden in England crosses the mediaeval moat to give access to the orchard and an unruly oak plantation full of wild garlic in the spring.

Until he recently retired, David, your host, ran 745pm restaurant at Moat Farm. One of Suffolk's best loved restaurants. Type the name of the restaurant into a search engine or TripAdvisor and you can still find reviews of the restaurant.

Centrally situated in Suffolk, the coastal towns of Southwold and Aldburgh and RSPB Minsmere are half an hour away. But so too is the rest of Suffolk: Historic Bury St Edmunds, wealthy mediaeval wool towns like Long Melford and Lavenham, unspoilt villages like Debenham and Halesworth, stately homes and gardens, dozens of grade one listed churches (our own has the finest single hammeer beam roof in the country) and a vast assortment of other things to see and do.

Whether the desire is a place to crash for the weekend and do very little, or a base for a week to explore the County of Suffolk, The West Wing seems to fit the bill rather well. At least so our guests tell us.

Nice property
I enjoyed our stay, but was very disappointed with the lack of help from VRBO who failed to resolve the issue of not being able to contact the property owners. Please can VRBO contact me by email regarding this matter

David managed hospitals before becoming passionate about modern furniture design. He set out to become a designer craftsman, but quickly found himself running a succesful busy producing his designs in quantity. Many of designs were used by the Design Council in exhibitions of modern British furniture and The Suffolk Recliner, his most famous chair went on to sales of about 10000.

His business was wiped out by the recession at the end of the 80s and he became a graphic designer. Before retiring he was running a design and print operation producing work for over 100 not for profit clients.

Retirement was boring and aged 65 David turned himself into a chef. His restaurant, based at Moat Farm, became one of Suffolk's best loved eating places.

He retired again aged 70.

Frankie, David's wife, carried out postgraduate research at the prestigiuous John Innes Centre in Norwich. After having a family, she freturned to the owrld of horticulture and managed the largest UK facility producing plants by the micropropagation method, the technology she helped pioneer. She is now a lay minister in the C of E providing pastoral care to three local parishes.

Why they chose this property

We have spent the last 40 years transforming Frankie's childhood home. Once a somewhat shabby 18th century farmhouse, it is now transformed into a beautiful house set within 2 acres of grounds surrounded by a one of Suffolk's largest moats.

What makes this property unique

Moat Farm is smack bang in the middle of Suffolk. Apart from distant Lowestoft, all of Suffolk's towns and attractions are within 45 minutes drive. Cambridge and Norwich can also be reached in the same time. Put simply it is ideally based for touring the county.

And if total relaxation is the order of the day, then Moat Farm is also a pretty good place to chill out. Wander through the gardens, help yourself to apples in the orchard, tip toe through the little oak wood hoping to see Roe Deer, stand on of the bridge at dusk, wine glass in hand watching the moon's reflection being rippled water voles swimming across the surface.
